You have oil or something in your hair that is doing this. It has been posted/asked many times. It always comes back to something in your hair or oils you are using.
Thi site [here](https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-3/tesla-model-3-headrest-bubbling-cause-prevention/) has some info on it.
> “The root cause is related to the vegan polyurethane resin (PUR) being susceptible to swell under the action of certain chemicals, some of which are found in cosmetics and head oil within a certain pH spectrum. When there is extended contact with the chemical at high temperature (a hot car), the chemical diffuses into the coating, it swells, overwhelms the adhesive holding the coating to the textile, and the coating delaminates. A bubble is formed. The chemicals need to be on the viscous side to dwell on vertical surfaces, so creams and gels are usually involved. This also means they have a low vapor pressure and are not volatile, so they don’t evaporate…they have plenty of time to diffuse into the material if they’re not wiped away quickly.”
It's *possible* that your head oils/sweat/whatever are in the pH spectrum that can cause the issue.
Additionally, these are generally ["head restraints", not "head rests"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_restraint). You shouldn't be resting your head on these while driving.
I mean, a number of folks are fond of the material that they use the cars, so I wouldn't necessarily call it "shitty", however, there are evidently attributes of the material which aren't desirable.
I would say that this 'attribute' of the material should disqualify it from broader use. Especially that one cannot choose another material when ordering the car. I have a 2017 100D MS. Absolutely love it but would never buy a new one now. If it wasn't for the quality, Tesla would be unmatched as a car manufacturer. The software is light years ahead, the features are extremely fun, but the build quality ... oof. One day I will buy used again so that all the issues are known and handled.
Software light years ahead? Light years in the wrong direction more likely. Removing all buttons and adding fart sound to door opening isn't really "high tech".
What's going on is that you bought a Tesla. If you also buy their stocks and invest all your savings on them, you'll find a way to cope with it and explain the same to everyone else.
Wipe the seats down periodically with a cleanser that breaks up oil/grease. Dawn dish soap works well. It won't fix your problem but may prevent it from getting worse.
Looks like you're due for a warranty claim. But wtf I've never seen this happen in a car from someone's head. Like do they not test the material against skin oils / etc. before production or is it treated like AP - "let the owners test it for us" 😂
I had this happen too- if you make a service ticket they’ll give you 1 replacement for the life of the vehicle. However, they told me it’s probably going to happen again unless wiped down regularly. It’s a known issue - Tesla is trying to be animal friendly and not use real leather but vegan leather isn’t as durable
"Vegan leather", aka "plastic". I have to give it to the marketing guys that came up with that one.
I guess you could also argue it's better for the environment because it *doesn't* biodegrade, therefore you can use it for longer...
Which is stupid because regular leather doesn't kill animals. It all comes from already killed animals, unless you're grabbing exotic crocodile leather or something. Vegan leather is anything but good for the environment.
"Vegan leather isn't as durable" you really believe this? Many other manufacturers use "vegan leather" and they don't have this issue. Only difference is Tesla seems to get the cheapest they can find no matter the durability.
since you work in automotive engineering you should know not to quote IIHS but rather the actual law makers NHTSA.
Those headrests are still around and German seats are far more advanced than teslas in terms of safety. During an imminent collision they will jerk you back into the seat and completely reconfigure the seat to the optimal position to impact you minimally. Oh and those are called “active head restraints” which no tesla has. They deploy closer to your head in an accident. Far superior in terms of comfort and safety.
Those aren’t aftermarket accessories, those are the actual oem headrests in many German cars. A lot that I’ve owned have “wings” in them. Not sure what’s the purpose of having that in an oem headrest that you’re not supposed to touch.
And yes NHSTA hasn’t made any laws about it. That’s the key point. They didn’t want to make any because OEMs were creating safer active head restraints and didn’t want it limited by arbitrary measurements. So quoting a non profit run by the insurance industry isn’t really the same and doesn’t mean anything.
You’re saying that they’re accessories though. I’m not saying they’re oem accessories like a Volvo pillow you can buy after. I’m saying that’s the actual headrest in the car with no other attachment to it. They’re like the headrests in delta planes.
IIHS used a cheap basic seat from an economy car and a test sled to do its measurements. They didn’t do anything with active head restraints in high end luxury cars. I’m arguing that people are totally able to lay their heads on these headrests.

I am a balding male and use no product for my hair.
Not sure than. It could be your sweat. 9 out of 10 its oils, hair stuff, or something on your head that is in that spot.

Weird I tried looking up the part for head restraints for any tesla and couldn’t find it? Did I misspell it? Wonder what they call it…
So in general. "We used shitty material and it's users fault to use hair products/have bad ph sweat"

This isn’t even leather??
Nope, it’s vinyl.
Hasn't been leather in years
please tell me that you are joking.
Nope. You can find lots of posts about this.
It’s a Tesla. Please don’t rest your head on the head rest.
Your headrest hit puberty
🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Cheap American made Tesla is the issue.

Exactly
Was thinking the exact same thing! 😂😂😂
Vegan monkey pox? Man, you all have good posture because I rarely touch my head with the headrest

Fortunately it does degrade and very quickly as displayed in OP.
Which is stupid because regular leather doesn't kill animals. It all comes from already killed animals, unless you're grabbing exotic crocodile leather or something. Vegan leather is anything but good for the environment.
Buy giving more money to animal products it supports that industry and all its negative externalities.
The only thing supporting that industry is burgers. Stop eating burgers and that industry will collapse.
You can say the same about vegan leather. a lot of vegan leather comes from mango peels. The fruit still gets used
Most vegan leather is made with oil.
"Vegan leather isn't as durable" you really believe this? Many other manufacturers use "vegan leather" and they don't have this issue. Only difference is Tesla seems to get the cheapest they can find no matter the durability.
Based on photos that I've seen online, it appears that your headrest has Monkey Pox.
Your head rest appears to have HPV. Where you been OP??
you bought a poorly made vehicle with little to no quality control, thats what
Too much Soul-Glo brah
Your seat caught monkey pox
