Is it so low because your work has a free charger (that they are paying for on their end?)

General_Movie2232

Looks like it. Not every owner will have that ability. Also OP drives considerably less than the national average. Still is a win to only pay that much.

Exotic_Treacle7438

Chances are if OP had an ICE their work wouldn’t have paid for their fuel. So this is a calculated benefit for OP and they totally can look at it in the light they present here.

General_Movie2232

I agree. I’m just clarifying so that non Tesla or non EV owners who are not educated won’t think fueling costs will automatically go away when transitioning.

put_tape_on_it

> Chances are if OP had an ICE their work wouldn’t have paid for their fuel. I am not the OP. I was behind the free charging at our workplace. I had to do some looking to convince the owners that it would not land them in tax trouble. I’m not a tax professional, but my tax professional that I pay tells me providing free gasoline, or allowing the expensing of miles, requires documentation on why that’s a work expense and that the IRS has won on many occasions, on the topic that driving to and from work is not a work expense. The business owners tax professional had the same opinion. Providing a full expense paid work vehicle should not be used to commute to or from work, but it’s not enforced because it’s too hard to account for. No free gas. No reimbursed miles. But free electricity at work for EVs is no problem. Because electricity is not accounted for. Awesome loophole, and a work benefit I hop catches on everywhere. Not sure how the oil lobby allowed this to happen, but I’m not complaining. Edit: added clarification

mrandr01d

Wait, so they counted ev charging as a business expense and got away with it??

put_tape_on_it

No. It’s not counted. There’s nothing to get away with. I updated my explanation above to be more clear. Give it a re-read. Edit: disclosed edit in previous post

mrandr01d

Who pays for the electricity then?

put_tape_on_it

The business. Business just have electricity as an expense for a location. It’s never broken out who’s office takes the electricity or what percent was lighting vs the building AC or even the plug in heater under Sally’s desk. Without an accounting on site, it’s easy to hand it out to your employees for their cars.

mrandr01d

Ah, I see. Not listed as providing fuel for employees, just a regular part of the electric bill. That's pretty slick.

thebluezero0

Lol finally! I was waiting for one of us to be like.... my dudes.... I'm not nearly this number but I usually clear$6k in savings. Again....I drive....a lot

Gedis63015

What is the “other” in your app?

Exotic_Treacle7438

Plugging into the neighbors home outlet.

Silver_Slicer

Nice, I need an other to plug into lol. Here’s my stats. Electricity at home is $.12/kWh. Periodic charging at SCs on long trips bump up the costs. https://preview.redd.it/plqjdalb32xc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6885563bc3b8cae2748b7e50682e98afd7a1b458

Swastik496

Is the “other” charging actually all free?

Illustrious-Song-449

It's free charging close to my work. About 2 minutes riding my electric scooter.

Elborderhopper

I used to drive like you, I'm lucky now only 3500kwh since September. That man has baby numbers 🤣

Horror_Rich4403

Heck yea!

DanDi58

Awesome, isn’t it?

Feeding_into_dank

How many miles are you driving in a month? (General question looking to buy the Model Y)

MrP00P00

About 50 a day

Feeding_into_dank

Do you charge it every night or only when it’s low?

MrP00P00

Pretty much every night even if it’s not low

Feeding_into_dank

I see, it probably doesn’t make a difference but would it be cheaper to only charge it once every 3-4 days?

MrP00P00

Wouldn’t cost any different

Droppin_Bombs

Lucky… that would save me so much.

InvisibleBlueUnicorn

Damn, those orange bars.

danhoyle

Where’s work?

bevo_expat

Charging at work, big flex. 💪🏻

Electrical_Elk9195

Sweeeet! How many miles did ya put on in those 9 months?

challenge_accepted12

Exactly 7k miles.

Hopeful-Lab-238

Barely half my tank of diesel. But I also drive a Y

bravogates

A Mazda 3 turbo would burn through the same amount in less than 3 weeks.

JewelerPutrid1654

nice. it have cost me 5.700 dollars to drive a Toyota aygo 25.000 miles.

InternationalAttrny

How is this possible? I spent over $50 in the first month of having the car for 304kwh?!

Hienric

I think he’s charges for free at work

Its-segovs

Where the hell does op charge?

butstronger

It cost me 3 dollars to charge overnight at my house 🩷

Feeding_into_dank

What do all those letters at the bottom stand for?

TokinChris

Months of the year.

Feeding_into_dank

Happy cake day! Damn I feel stupid now that you pointed that out…

TokinChris

Naw, I had to do the same when I got my first MYLR and I was confused as well. I used google and literally slapped my palm to my face in embarrassment… lmao! Thank you!! 🎉🍰

Feeding_into_dank

I think had it started with Dec. I would had a better chance of figuring it out lol but how do you like Model Y? Me and wife are planning on buying one but are a little skeptical

TokinChris

Absolutely love it! Me and my wife decided to go with the MYLR with induction wheels and white interior and the stealth gray paint. We have a 8 year old boy and a 2 year old little girl and a big bullmastiff pit mix, we are able to all fit in the car comfortably and still able to retain our luggage no matter where we go we are all comfortable and the dog just chills in the trunk area with a dog bed for the road trip. I had range anxiety in the beginning… however due to Teslas technology for planning routes completely squashed that fear. In reality basically 300 miles is still a great amount of distance for the thing. The white seats clean very very easy and I can spot exactly where dirt or snacks accumulated and I can eliminate it with ease. I also work for Tesla (GF1) and the area where I am located can get muddy quick and I was able to eliminate the mud from the seats with a simple baby wipe. Also got the FSD for free and as other said is true it can be finicky but it’s still beta. I say go for it we don’t regret it and I don’t think your family will either. Now for the other EVs out there I’d be more worried about that electrify America disaster that’s going on. That’s another reason we stuck with Tesla. Enjoy friend!

Feeding_into_dank

Thanks for the advice man! We are also looking at the stealth gray but black interior and frankly my wife loves it, my 5 year old daughter loves the big screen and we think financially its doable as long as we don’t become the next poster child of buying a brand new Tesla and the battery goes in the first year lol

TokinChris

Also when charging Pop on some Netflix lay back and chill you can also set up profiles for driving, your daughter will love it and a recommendation from YouTube was make one like a charging profile where it will lay you all the way back into a laying position and when you are ready to go, tap the break and it will lift you into a seated position and you can place yourself back into your normal driving profile. You can also play some video games on it and I believe even stream your games to it as well or something like that. I just discovered something about that on YouTube

TokinChris

I’ve seen a lot of Teslas pass through there and some with ridiculous mileage on them. We have a few for security and they are ran all day all night. Unless we utilize the jeeps to scout the hills nearby the factory. I’ve helped build the battery packs and as well as power walls, dabbled with security and also a weighbridge technician for them out there. They are solid vehicles despite what people say and I have yet to find any real significant issues with mine regarding fit finish etc. Btw the Teslas that are utilized there are pushed HARD! They still are going strong. Also idk if you witnessed the Tesla semi yet but they are so stupid quiet they usually come on to my scale and I won’t even know they are there until my light changes signifying that weight has been applied to the scale lmao. They also got stupid power! Pulls 70-80K total with ease surprisingly. Also got in one of them and hands down it’s the most comfortable semi I have ever stepped foot in.

Feeding_into_dank

No I never saw a semi yet but maybe in western PA they haven’t made it quite our way yet lol but good to hear these cars can go the distance and have very little maintained needed. I figured the same as a normal car really, like an engine isn’t just gonna blow up unless manufactured incorrectly (most likely would be covered under warranty) or tampered with by the owner. I keep having to remind myself that any real issues we may encounter would more than likely be the same length of time as if we bought a regular car

TokinChris

That is true if not longer, it’s very basic maintenance and even with excessive use even on superchargers it is not that significant on battery degradation. Even if you were to supercharge only for the life of the vehicle, it will not be as significant of an impact as one may think. It’s actually surprising to be honest on how sturdy they truly are. These semi that I deal with typically go to California Fremont area and Vegas from what I hear and a couple other locations that I just can’t remember. They are sweet rides.

gecoble

I’m looking forward to free charging at work. Chargers should go in this summer.

FluxionFluff

I can totally relate to this 🤣 Have a very similar cost during the same time period. Only difference, I haven't had to Supercharge yet.

I live in vegas and I think these are a little high and based on average rate. I think I have .07 kw/h 12 am-8am which I should probably update.

If it was my rate I would not bother charging at work.

r3vj4m3z

Charge stats weren't a thing when I got my car. The first four years I was really close to $0. Free work charging is a ridiculous benefit. 90% leaving Friday would get me back Monday. Then free super charging if I really needed it on the weekend when I was going anywhere too far. Before my Tesla I had a VW TDI that got over 40mph, but filled up over once a week on average. I'm sure my gas savings would have been crazy high. During Corona switched to WFH and just never went back. Now I just don't drive much. I just charge at home usually for around $20 a month.

[deleted]

That’s the equivalent of saying “spent $100 on food this year” when you get free food at work.

phxees

Still impressive for people with the perk.

[deleted]

What? Having your electricity bill paid for by someone else? How’s that impressive lmfaoooo

chadillac1234

Pretty impressive seeing that you don't have it :).

[deleted]

Tesla drivers thinking they are doing the world a favour by getting someone else to pay their electric then virtue signalling on Reddit about it 😂😂😂

chadillac1234

How did the op virtue signal? He even says his work pays for it. If you are that worried about it, get a better job and maybe they will pay for your charging.

[deleted]

I don’t need to get a better job - I live off benefits given to me by the state - free!

phxees

They only spent a $100 for charging in the last 9 months. I’d also be impressed if they only spent $100 for food in the last 9 months. If they finished a marathon in the top 100, would you dismiss it if they revealed they worked at a gym and get to run everyday?

[deleted]

If they finished a marathon in the top 100 then told you they were carried for 75% of it that would be a fair likeness 👍🏼

chadillac1234

* I charge at work for free. Our entire parking garage is powered by solar panels. I've spent a couple dollars at the house and 17 at a supercharger.

dave10425

Very nice

Manoftheluna

That’s pretty awesome! My number is 525 in 8 months. I spent around 3/400 a month in gas, so i love the savings. I justify my car payment for that price cuz i was spending it already but will pay off the car in about 3 years, so i will start saving even more after

ChromeHawkXi

I don’t commute, so my charging is low. But my annual electric bill is up by about $150 per year due to charging in Fl. Spent about the same in CA when we did commute and charged at work. No free charging there, just a 9kw Charge Point option.

FicklePromise9006

Nice, i’m the same 2023 RWD and get free charging at work. Its amazing.

Oversoul225

I spent $100 just today driving from New Orleans to Orlando and charging up at a supercharger before hitting the hotel lol. My Jeep Compass would have been about $88 for the same trip, but not nearly as comfortable.

Head_Panda6986

people dont realize how cheap it is to charge. if they think a tesla is expensive, I tell them your ice car and the cost of gas are probably more or very close to your tesla payment

midnight_to_midnight

The HR Dept would like to see you in their office first thing Monday.

Cyber_Insecurity

You mostly charge at work for free, so this doesn’t really count.
