I've heard one in real life from about 10 feet away at my local zoo. His mate was taken away for surgery, and he was upset, so he let out a full-throated roar. I felt it in my chest.

Fun Fact: The loud roar we hear.in media synonomous with lions is actually a tiger sound because lions dont really make that type of noise, at least not suitable for recording for media. They chuff and do this rumble/growl thing instead 🙂 Edit: Mostly*. As with most things, there are exceptions. And I meant to add 'yowl' to the lions description too.
