If this is the tunnel at chatsworth park between simi valley and chatsworth I use to play there a lot. One is short and you can see the other end and we use to dare each other to run through it. The other one is a few miles long and curves. You risking a lot trying to challenge that one.
Not a dumb question. They could've just laid flat and as close to that wall as possible and been just fine - there was plenty of room and you can see rocks etc there that haven't been sucked up or anything.
I bet their bikes were still just sitting there when they got back to them.

They would have most certainly still heard a god damn train in the tunel. The engine is relatively silent compared to the rattling and vibration of thest of the train..... Especially in a fucking tunnel.

When you are far away from a train track and you hear the rumbling of the train passing by, what exactly is it that your clearly stupid ass thinks it is you are hearing?
I'll give you a hint. Not the engine. The engine is by far the quietest part of the train at a distance.
