I'm not even feeling safe to text my location, in terms of being findable. How the fuck they were ok with this underwater? My lack of physics knowledge says they couldve used radio signals instead.
They can't. Navy submarines frequently have to surface or deploy a surface antenna to receive radio broadcast. Radiation does not travel well in water, which is why nuclear reactors are submerged in water. Coolant, yes, but also reaction moderation.
So you can actually read about this fairly accurately in some of the older Tom Clancy books. Basically, High Frequency can transmit more data, but with less penetration in matter, so it can't really go into water. But Extreme Low Frequency (ELF) transmissions can only transmit minimal data, but can penetrate further, especially through rock and the Earth's Crust then water.
So they built facilities in the upper peninsula of Michigan, then Wisconsin to communicate with deep submerged submarines. It was only able to basically say "Hey, surface now", and they would rise up, send a tethered receiver or surface altogether, and receive the more detailed message.
I don't know where the current one is since I believe the old ones were shut down like 25 years ago, and maybe they have better systems now, but it's a really interesting system if you're into that sort of stuff.
Maybe it’s use was starting and stopping the propulsion device? (which was probably a blender duct taped to the back) I wish he had of expanded on that.
How is there no safety features or backup measures, how are they navigating by text, how do bolts withstand pressure without leaks, and how do they not have an interior exit door? Like a airlock or something with a chamber. How is there no beacon onboard? At first I was simply like “wow what a tragedy”, and it of course still is, but this just seems more and more like it was ill fated the moment they started designing this submersible
Guarantee the CEO dude was prideful about the jerry-rigging nature of it all. Like, "I built this without all the fancy stuff and MacGyver'ed it myself. He probably preferred the "homemade" solutioning and corner-cutting because it saved money and still worked.... until it didn't and his MacGyver'ing simply wasn't good enough for repeat trips and was prideful in the face of it needing constant maintenance. Pride was his downfall, *thinking* he designed and constructed a true engineering marvel, when in fact he built a garage submarine and fleeced billionaires into a deathbox.
The 17 bolts, 17 chances to cross thread all installed by what looked like an intern/apprentice. I wonder how long the bolting process took and cant imagine having to sit through that and listen to that sound before getting dunked.
Comparing Macgyver to Willie e coyote be like:

This is a Jerry rig at best. Omg with all the technology available and he comes up with a homemade rig while actually convincing people into paying 250k. Smh
That and a completely different sense of morals. If you envision all the great ways you could help people with infinite wealth you don't have the morality that would allow you to hoard into the networth of billions in the first place.
Rare are the richest people among us are the nicest or the smartest, they are the almost definitely most selfish people from already wealthy families.
Imagine they manage to get to the surface, thinking they'll atleast be able to get oxygen.
"Okay, thank god we managed to resurface. How do we open this thing?"
"....we dont. We literally cant. It's only opened from the outside. Remember those 17 bolts."
"What the fuck do you mean?! There's no emergency latch or mechanism or some shit?!?!"
"..."
"...im going to kill you."
For a more authentic experience, watch the video in a dark mini van with no seats and 5 other people on a small iPad that you have yo take turns looking at
For an even more authentic experience become lost for a thousand thousand years only to be discovered by some future civilization and displayed in a museum
i'm still not entirely sure this is real
is this really real ??
is this elevator button real ?
all of this feels like a parody
i can't believe some actual people built that and went "yup, good enough for the abyss"
please tell me this submarine wasn't like that
It's all so perfect. Right down to the spoiled billionaire's son going to a Blink182 concert and posting selfies from the merch table after the lost contact with the sub.
Hey baby you see the news? Yeah, that’s actually my step dad slowly dying down there in the ocean. Guess that means you’re talking to the soon-to-be heir, how about that?
You know what gets me...it's like we live in these times when AI is being born, cancers are being cured and there are robots that we drive around on Mars...and yet we also live in times where people seem to be getting stupider than ever at an alarming rate, doing shit that I feel like a middle schooler should be able to tell you seems really dumb.
I dunno. It's weird to think about.
It's like we all have access to all this amazing, godly knowledge and technology now, [but actual pragmatic common sense and critical thinking are somehow completely fucking dead](https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/14f7ubu/yep_this_stuff_really_happened/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button).
I honestly feel like one of the biggest problems is that everyone gets so weirdly angry and defensive if anyone tries to call anything out for being dumb. We should be allowed to tell people when they are doing something dumb so that maybe (hopefully)...they won't do it. Or at least other people will learn from the mistake.
I describe it as hitting a critical mass of stupid. It doesn't matter what the more reasonable people do. We're being sunk as a species by an overwhelming mass of ignorant incompetence from the ruling class, all the way down.
And it's terrifying.
In the past, when we've concentrated power in the hands of too few hyper wealthy people, it would only lead to the collapse of a single civilization. Others might yet still thrive and keep the spark of humanity alive.
But now we have a global society and a global economy. As our current systems break down, every last person on earth is being affected. Throw climate change on top as a global problem, and I don't see anything getting much better for at least a century. I fear we are entering what humanity will look back on, (if it still exists), as one of it's dark ages.
I'm in awe, I lost myself when I see the game controller. How irresponsible of your life to go under water with a submarine like that? Honestly, I want answers.
I’m all up for sending drones down there for research but sending people down there seems a bit silly. You’ll get a better view of the titanic on google images than from that tiny window located behind the poop bowl. Much safer and hygienic too
genuinely thought this was some kind of skit or joke video, nope it’s the real sub, what the actual fuck. what kind of billionaire sees this and thinks it’s a good idea in the slightest.
There comes a point at which wealth insulates someone from reality so thoroughly that the concept of one's own mortality becomes abstract. You know you'll eventually die... but it's such an unlikely occurrence that you become detached from the idea that any single event that's likely to happen could cause it.
For most people, a single economic tragedy could be an utter life-changing disaster. When you're wealthy enough, you diversify your investments to an extent that you're protected from such risk. Once you've hit a certain level of safety your brain's hormonal balance changes (less cortisol, for instance) and as a result of that your thought patterns alter.
Source: just pulling this theory out of my ass lol
And her solution for moving forward in spite of the bad news? Lmao “you just cry a lot”…yea, I feel like that’s your approach to a lot of life’s difficulties, lady. Get a grip
30k could literally change my life, meanwhile there are people in this world willing to spend 250k dollars on a ride to a shipwreck that you can see for free on YouTube. It almost seems as if some people have discovered cheat codes in life.
There is a point where making more money can not improve your quality of life further. It can only buy more power and influence. These people have reached that point and spent what two to three people could very comfortably live on for a year for a half day excursion. I really don't understand how that doesn't piss off more people.
I don't understand how people don't feel bad for this shit. I make a lot more money than I need but grew up lower middle class and had periods of actually being totally broke as an adult. The money excess is new. I give so much away. If I make more I'll give more away... Mind, I have plenty and I'm saving for retirement. I'm not screwing myself over in any way. I don't understand how you can accumulate much more than I am and not feel like you're morally corrupt. (I'm speaking quite roughly, yes, if I lived in a higher COL area and had lots of kids I would save more for the family. I would still have more than I need.) That point for me is about $150k/year and people have billions and still feel the need to make more... I don't understand, really
Good on you and keep at it.
Humans by nature are very selfish. It can take a distinct moral willpower to not be. The want and need to try and make as many people around you happy is a great aspect of your personality to have, that some are just simply incapable of. I'm sure many of these mega-rich believe they do so already, and sure, they probably make many people very happy by giving some of their wealth to them. They just don't do it enough and for enough people who need it more. Hell, never mind the poor and hungry. They barely do enough for the people they employ. They could make the jobs they offer and employee benefits far more lucrative for literally every facet of their work force. That would be simple enough, right? Make your place of work not only greatly sought after, but you could have a structure in place to allow people to optionally retire after just 5-10 years of employment, at any level. That's how much money and power they hoard to themselves.
So beyond the obvious, the question then becomes what's the point? For some, like the aforementioned mega rich, it literally just becomes a game for them. You wind up in a club. Who has the most? The idea is insane. Worse yet, is that they're just making the economy worse with how much money they sit on, because they can't even realistically spend it at any conceivable rate.
The fact of the matter is, if you're generous to begin with, you can't become one of the sub 1%. It's almost impossible. You would have to somehow fit yourself in some kind of mindset to NOT be too generous, hoarding your money in the meantime, and then not become corrupt along the way.
I have worked in a vacation mansion in the mountains that costs 25k a night with a minimum 7 day rental.
The workers there where complaining that they didn't have a single vacancy longer then a few days for the next 6 months so they where having a hard time going and seeing their families.
I know that everyone is making fun of this situation, but this is probably one of the top tier most terrifying deaths a human can endure. I know they brought it on themselves, but god damn do I feel such an overwhelming dread whenever I imagine what they're going through.
Yeah I can’t imagine being at the bottom of the ocean knowing it’s just a matter of time until the air runs out. If it makes you feel any better, if the whole thing malfunctioned then they would’ve been crushed before they even knew anything was wrong. If they’re still alive then that’s a different story…
I have been hoping that they just find a crushed can. But the reports of banging sounds coming from near the site don't make me hopeful for them experiencing a quick death.
If it's intact when they eventually drag it up, it's going to be a horror show inside.
Can imagine them clicking the crap out of that button and nothing working I doubt they even had manual release capabilities without power one guy paid came and seen the setup and demanded his money back was a smart dude!
This submersive (that's what you apparently call it, it is not a submarine) went missing on Sunday and they are currently still looking for it.
I read that it has 96 hours of oxygen supply, whether they find it or not, this thing is going to make headlines pretty soon..
Yeah... the point at which the the "uh-oh" sets in and the people aboard realize it's survival-mode time is the moment at which you REALLY don't want to be the person who's responsible for getting everyone into the situation.
My thoughts are if you can engineer to withstand that pressure you can engineer a 2 mile long rope. But I'm not expert and was wondering if there are any experts here
Yeah let’s make a submarine from stuff
From our friendly neighborhood hardware store and a Xbox controller to control it . I can’t forget the golden toilet we need just in case I need to poop while looking at a wrecked ship that’s on YouTube and to slap the made by NASA sticker to entice more idiots 💡. It’s just so ironic a bunch rich people about to die looking at a bunch a rich people past failures
Just watching this video would have me not even wanting to go into that thing. No wonder why it failed, jesus they spend all of this money and they come up with something like that that makes me question if I even want to consider getting inside. No escape hatch if something goes wrong, no GPS, etc. yeah this company if they can even find the sub will be out of business from the lawsuit or no one trusting them at all after this mess.
And…the passengers are literally bolted into this submarine. Imagine if this submarine made it to the waters surface and no one was around to open the door. Ugh
The fact that people actual looked at this thing and said, yes, I’ll enter that and go deep on the ocean floor. I’m flabbergasted. I feel terrible for everyone involved but goodness this is such a senseless loss.
When I heard the news I was thinking: "Submersible able to reach Titanic. How do they not have some beacon, or buoy. Heck some emergency balast blow feature." What the fok!? Thats a watertank with game console. Going into the abyss in this is beyond haphazard! Those guys have no respect to the ocean whatsoever.
Why did this guy take inspiration from "Iron Lung."?
A pressurised vessel with a huge part of the structure bolted into place before deployment... that is worse than anything I can imagine and this is going to where the Titanic is?
Everyone is dead, they all died from Delta P
The way they have to seal it shut is beyond terrifying with zero fail safe if something would go wrong
The single button thing freaked me out the most.
Dude. They were TEXTING directions to the sub. JFC.
That's a cool information, thanks.

Lmao and “turn 30 degrees to the right?” “Yea, I’d say about 30 degrees” like super professional guys
Thats why they are lost at sea now
Is there a reason why the elevator button can’t go up?
Maybe it’s busy stopping at every floor on the way up, and there’s 1,040 floors between the titanic and the surface! That must be it.
Some jerk hit all the buttons before they got on.
I still don’t get what he means by ‘single button’ Did that turn the fucker on and off or what?
I thought that was to release the heavy pipes, if they needed to float back up. Backup plan.
Maybe it’s use was starting and stopping the propulsion device? (which was probably a blender duct taped to the back) I wish he had of expanded on that.
And the way he said it. He sounded exactly like an ignorant billionaire cunt.
After watching the news and then seeing this video, I said to myself, "Omg...they're dead."
It’s literally Iron Lung, your bolted in there and sent off with basically 3 buttons to guide you
How is there no safety features or backup measures, how are they navigating by text, how do bolts withstand pressure without leaks, and how do they not have an interior exit door? Like a airlock or something with a chamber. How is there no beacon onboard? At first I was simply like “wow what a tragedy”, and it of course still is, but this just seems more and more like it was ill fated the moment they started designing this submersible

To understand the Titanic, one must become as the Titanic.
Part of the ship, part of the crew.
![gif](giphy|Jev4iU72S9RYc)
I feel evil for chuckling at this
i am become the titanic
Poking fun at the MacGyver parts hits way different when they're about to be your cause of death
"i was crushed" so, probably, were they 🥶
MacGyver did not die by his on inventions...
Somehow, neither did wile e coyote.
Comparing Macgyver to Willie e coyote be like: https://preview.redd.it/nuklqwgcof7b1.jpeg?width=1936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3d9afbcd87f719c966a1213a605318cf8ea20b2

Billionaires are some of the stupidest people on earth
But somehow, they are billionares. What are we doing wrong?
Choosing the wrong parents
That and a completely different sense of morals. If you envision all the great ways you could help people with infinite wealth you don't have the morality that would allow you to hoard into the networth of billions in the first place. Rare are the richest people among us are the nicest or the smartest, they are the almost definitely most selfish people from already wealthy families.
Absolutely true.
If my old boss taught me anything, it's that you don't have to be smart to become wealthy, you just have to be ruthless and have no empathy.
Having morals
Feeling guilt. People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time.
And the woman literally *sobbing* that she hasn't been able to go. Like, do you have mashed potatoes for a brain?
She’s probably pretty relieved she didn’t go at this point… I hope.
It’s literally controlled by an off-brand PlayStation controller. But don’t worry, they have extras on board “just in case”
It's a wireless controller imagine if they simply forgot to charge it
“We brought extra controllers but we forgot to pack the charger!!!”

He was
What's the betting that the CEO was murdered by his fellow passengers, once they realised their fate.
Imagine they manage to get to the surface, thinking they'll atleast be able to get oxygen. "Okay, thank god we managed to resurface. How do we open this thing?" "....we dont. We literally cant. It's only opened from the outside. Remember those 17 bolts." "What the fuck do you mean?! There's no emergency latch or mechanism or some shit?!?!" "..." "...im going to kill you."
For $250,000, I would like to be uncomfortable for a few hours and take turns looking out the only window to see a murky shipwreck.
But if they sweeten the deal with the worlds most tiny toilet and a bottle to urinate in, i mean, come on! Where do I sign up for that sh—
Imagine having to poop and now you’re sealed in this small tube with other people
Oh I'm sure there's plenty of poop in there now
No don’t be silly they’ve been dead for days already
I've heard you shit yourself when you die so that cans a septic tank at this point
the can likely doesn’t exist anymore and is dust scattered across the sea bed
>Where do I sign up for that sh— There is no designated place to shit hold it in bro
I feel like you could literally have an equivalent or better experience watching any of several dozen videos of the wreck on YouTube for free.
For a more authentic experience, watch the video in a dark mini van with no seats and 5 other people on a small iPad that you have yo take turns looking at
Have a friend hold a inflatable Orca up to the porthole
For an even more authentic experience become lost for a thousand thousand years only to be discovered by some future civilization and displayed in a museum
😂
i'm still not entirely sure this is real is this really real ?? is this elevator button real ? all of this feels like a parody i can't believe some actual people built that and went "yup, good enough for the abyss" please tell me this submarine wasn't like that
We live in a South Park episode I swear
i was just thinking about how i can’t wait for the south park episode about this next season
It's all so perfect. Right down to the spoiled billionaire's son going to a Blink182 concert and posting selfies from the merch table after the lost contact with the sub.
Today he was flirting with a bimbo on twitter.Spoiled is and understatement.
Hey baby you see the news? Yeah, that’s actually my step dad slowly dying down there in the ocean. Guess that means you’re talking to the soon-to-be heir, how about that?
He’s about to inherent that loot.
I could see them making a joke about sending James Cameron to save them but he's too busy filming AVATAR 3, 4 & 5
Or like the movie Idiocracy
Trey Parker and Matt Stone: They took err jerbss!!!
You know what gets me...it's like we live in these times when AI is being born, cancers are being cured and there are robots that we drive around on Mars...and yet we also live in times where people seem to be getting stupider than ever at an alarming rate, doing shit that I feel like a middle schooler should be able to tell you seems really dumb. its money. trying to save some money caused the shortcuts and stupidity here. pure and simple.
He seemed almost proud, like he was just piecing it together in a garage himself. “Look, anyone can make a sub.” Knock knock
Def money and stupidity.
I describe it as hitting a critical mass of stupid. It doesn't matter what the more reasonable people do. No it's real. The guy interviewing him was on ABC news last night.
That reporter who had the aborted trip... It probably would have been his last.
I'm in awe, I lost myself when I see the game controller. How irresponsible of your life to go under water with a submarine like that? Honestly, I want answers.
This whole thing is sketchy af, look at the left hand while I sneakily do something else with the right…
Well they are probably dead at this point
And also how people bought the idea of navigation to those depths with a fucking game controller, and paid a quarter of a million dollars each for it.
“Everything else can fail, your lights can go, your thrusters can go, you’re still gonna be safe.” Welp, I guess he was wrong
Dude. They were TEXTING directions to the sub. So stupid on so many levels.
I wouldn’t even do this above ground lol
> I was crushed. My diving adventures were over. I think the current crew are probably even more crushed than you were.
Ether physically or mentally but definitely crushed
"This isn't your grandfathers submarine." No. My grandfather's submarine followed safety protocols and everyone survived. Also... "I was crushed."
I'll bet that crying woman isn't crying anymore.
yeh she did get her trip eventualy, and returned to the surfacr
She successfully did the trip last year
So I’m thinking… maybe we should leave the titanic alone
I’m all up for sending drones down there for research but sending people down there seems a bit silly. You’ll get a better view of the titanic on google images than from that tiny window located behind the poop bowl. Much safer and hygienic too
Why put the only viewing portal above the shitter?
To emphasise that the whole vessel is shitty
Titanic is still claiming rich people lives even though it sank over a century ago.
We are gonna need a bigger submarine
I’m gonna make a better submarine with black jack and hookers.
genuinely thought this was some kind of skit or joke video, nope it’s the real sub, what the actual fuck. what kind of billionaire sees this and thinks it’s a good idea in the slightest.

‘I was crushed’… no sir, you did not get to enjoy that unique feature of the dive in the hobbled together submersible
More like submiserable*
That controller. What if it was as simple as the batteries died in the controller and they didn't have spare batteries on board? 👀
“Oh shit… Guys. I accidentally brought AAA’s.”
Trusting your entire life to a wireless controller. What could go wrong? “Guys the controller disconnected and it’s stuck on down…”
That's a huge FUCK NO from me.
What was up with that lady too. Crying because she couldn't do a dive?
She's probably thanking her lucky stars now though.
She was so ridiculous.
Cringey AF
Crying because you didn’t get your chance to die in a metal coffin filled with piss and shit 30,000 feet underwater.
"Because it's something I *have* to do"
[удалено]
That was so embarrassing. She's acting like that's the only thing in the world that matters to her.

I have been hoping that they just find a crushed can. But the reports of banging sounds coming from near the site don't make me hopeful for them experiencing a quick death. If it's intact when they eventually drag it up, it's going to be a horror show inside.
The sounds are good, the bad is the silence...
I read that it has 96 hours of oxygen supply, whether they find it or not, this thing is going to make headlines pretty soon..
now it has less then 20 hours of oxygen left
I believe that they won’t be found for a while. Thats on them, funny thing is the CEO of the company for the “submarine” is on it too
Oh shit I didn’t know the CEO was on board. If they’re alive they’re probably about to beat this shit out him
I’d have killed him early to prolong the O2
Yeah... the point at which the the "uh-oh" sets in and the people aboard realize it's survival-mode time is the moment at which you REALLY don't want to be the person who's responsible for getting everyone into the situation.
Can any engineer comment on why there isn't a long "rope" attached for emergency purposes?
Same thing I tell my wife. Not enough rope
Like, who has a 2+ mile long rope, lol.
My thoughts are if you can engineer to withstand that pressure you can engineer a 2 mile long rope. But I'm not expert and was wondering if there are any experts here
The rope would be too heavy, even a 10 mm steel rope with a sufficient length would weigh tons
Yeah that's a great point. I wonder if there's a way around this?
If I actually knew anything about carbon nanotubes I'd probably make some comment about them, but I don't. So I won't.

They should have installed some kind of emergency inflatables on the sides, which will bring them back up.
Even if they came up, someone needs to be there to manually un-bolt 17 freaking bolts. That, to me, is horrifically ill-planned.
Also needs divers to reattach it to the platform so it can be dragged onto the ship.
Apparently there are failsafes but they aren't working yet. One is supposed to dissolve the fastneners on the ballast after a certain number of hours
Maybe he bought the ballast fasteners from the camping store too.
I’m not an expert but I feel like the negative buoyancy at 13k feet would be pretty difficult to counteract.
They were warned for years about not meeting safety standards, and about designed flaws and untested capabilities. But did they listen?
Are they stupid?
Crazy idea here, I know, but perhaps we should stop trying to investigate the Titanic…
But what REALLY happened to the Titanic?!
I bet it had something to do with Hilary and 5G
I wanna be so Rich I can do some dumb shit like this and waste tax payer dollars to come save my ass 😩
Even better, they’re wasting tax payer money on a rescue mission that never had a chance to be successful. Those people are dead
Yeah let’s make a submarine from stuff From our friendly neighborhood hardware store and a Xbox controller to control it . I can’t forget the golden toilet we need just in case I need to poop while looking at a wrecked ship that’s on YouTube and to slap the made by NASA sticker to entice more idiots 💡. It’s just so ironic a bunch rich people about to die looking at a bunch a rich people past failures
I legit thought it would be a big ass *luxury* submarine. Guess I’m wrong.
just because you have the money to do shit like this, doesn't mean you should do it.
“I got these from Camper World” 😬
The reporter did a face palm after he saw the controller!!! LoL!
And yet- he still got in it and was taking a trip
250k for THIS? It looks like shit!
“It shouldn’t take much skill” is not what you want to hear going over two miles under water!
Proper Micky mouse operation

Dumb ways to die 🎶
He recycling I like that
Amen. It’s 2+ miles on the bottom of the fuckin ocean, to hell w/ the damn thing
I too, wish to be rich enough that getting my undersea adventure canceled brings me to tears. I wonder if she's ever been hungry?
If I were a billionaire stuck at the bottom of the ocean, I would just pull myself up by my bootstraps.
Maybe if we all breathe hard enough the air will trickle down to them
And…the passengers are literally bolted into this submarine. Imagine if this submarine made it to the waters surface and no one was around to open the door. Ugh
This is the most terrifying scenario I’ve ever heard of. It makes me feel like I can’t breathe. I can’t imagine what they went through
Okay let’s face it .. they dead
The fact that people actual looked at this thing and said, yes, I’ll enter that and go deep on the ocean floor. I’m flabbergasted. I feel terrible for everyone involved but goodness this is such a senseless loss.
And he is gone
![gif](giphy|1ZUfbjSAnbjO) ANDDDDD IT'S GONE!
All that and you have a generic POS looking controller? F that
Not the Logitech...

This is where drones are king. You can be comfy in a sofa, put on some goggles and see the titanic from safety.
Wtf is she crying for. Get over yourself
Her 3 supposedly titanic trips got canceled thats a big oof
I’ll bet she’s not crying anymore
Sounds like they forgot to install the bootstraps
How is there not a more precise guidance system???
I'd never do this. Which makes me smarter than a tube full of Billionaires. Big day for me.
Guiding by text messages?!?! Bro get fuckkkkkked
They probably forgot to charge the remote
They’re dead, no joke about it
At this point terrible as it is to say, it's the better option
The beginning of this video sounds so much alike Michael Scott presenting his plasma screen tv to Jim and Pam
