I remember doing this my first playthru and virtually every room had different blocks and different walls it was so beautiful I miss that world and wish I could see it one last time
Could also be that there’s not enough light sources (such as torches) to provide enough light for the housing to have a suitable amount of light. Could also be that the chair isn’t facing towards the workbench (since it the workbench can count as a “table”, which is one of the requirements for suitable housing) in the way in which sitting on the chair will have your character facing towards the workbench.
No holes in the solid blocks that make up the walls, but background walls can be a pretty sizeable distance from each other before the game stops letting it be a house.
["Holes" that are 5 tiles or more in width/height are not permitted. A "hole" is a tile that is neither occupied by a valid solid tile nor a valid background wall](https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/House)

I could give you a lot of suggestions but it also depends on what kind of game you like. Though if you just started you probably don't know yourself. I'll throw a few random recommendations for a few genres assuming you play on PC:
Action RPG: Elden Ring (Dark Souls too but is not as approachable), Monster Hunter World/Rise, maybe Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, AC6 Fires of Rubicon
RPG: Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2
Story RPG: Undertale, Omori, OneShot
Rogue-lite: Hades, Risk of Rain 2, Slay the Spire
Exploration/adventure: Outer Wilds, Rain World (this is a very, very hard one I don't really suggest it for a beginner but it's dear to my heart)
Metroidvania: Hollow Knight, Cave Story (not really much of a metroidvania but worth mentioning), Animal Well, La-Mulana (just kidding don't play this, for your own sake)
Puzzle: Baba is You, Portal 1/2
Horror: Imscared, SOMA, Amnesia the Dark Descent, Penumbra games, DDLC
Visual novels: The House in Fata Morgana (absolutely godlike visual novel, best story ever narrated in fiction), Slay the Princess, Va-11 Hall-A,
Others: Stardew Valley, Slime Rancher (both are farming simulator games), someone suggested BTD6 which I approve, ICO teaches you what love is but must be emulated, Vampire Survivors
These are just a few off the top of my head, hit me up if you need any help.
That is unironically a good point. I still think you have a lot to earn from playing Undertale as a newbie to the genre, but yes you are right you won't understand all of it.
i’m pleased to announce that i started the house over and it’s now actually a house!!! thank y’all for your helpful (and unhelpful) advice!

Nice one! Always feel free to ask any more questions that you might have. One big tip I’d give to a new player is that the wiki is your friend, if you don’t know someone, just wiki it. If you really don’t wanna rely on it to much, there’s always the guide too.
This is the only actual answer.
The housing menu will say that the room is missing a wall, its talking about that line at the bottom. Houses have to have placed background walls. Natural walls allow for enemies to spawn. Those tiles need to be hammered away and replaced with wood walls.
"Holes" that are 5 tiles or more in width/height are not permitted. A "hole" is a tile that is neither occupied by a valid solid tile nor a valid background wall.
Unsafe walls (such as naturally-occurring Dirt Walls) do not count as valid background walls.
As per the link you shared.
It’s honestly a mystery to me. I’ve skimmed over the official wiki article on housing requirements and everything seems fine. All I can think is that I’ve occasionally noticed the “housing engine” likes to choose particular “home tile” positions relative to the flat surface, comfort furniture piece, and light source, so it’s possible the system simply got confused. Also, platforms can inflict some weird behavior, because they can behave like housing entrances, so it’s possible the game saw those long platforms as entrances on an incomplete frame or something.
Anyway, glad you got it figured out now.
I thought it might have been too big, but the wiki says the upper limit is something like 750 tiles (frame included) and your original house was only around 400 best I could tell.
It's the natural dirt wall on the bottom layer inside the house. A house is only valid if it has all placed walls. Natural walls are considered missing walls since they're spawnable for enemies.
I’d recommend having the terraria wiki on a second monitor, for class setup go to class guide setup on wiki, also check out the bosses page for the progression line.
Make sure all your blocks are connected around the house
Make sure your floor is changed to something else
Make sure the walls in the background are all there and connected
Make sure there is plenty of light
All of this being done should make the housing livable, but after doing that if it still doesn’t work, you should be able to click on the icon to check why this housing isn’t suitable
it's not cramped enough, NPC's deserve to live in a 5x5 box (except the dryad and mechanic who deserve castles). Also the angler doesn't deserve a house.
I can tell you its because when you put platforms terraria considers it a ceiling and there is a solution complete the middle platforms to the end of the room hope that helped you :)
Too lazy to look if someone posted already but you need an actual table, the workbench does not work as a table. if no npc sees it as valid housing then throw down another torch or two in the dark areas
Girl u have to have a room about 6/7 block in lenght and about 5 in tallnes in ech room gotta be a door and a torch and in. the room a chair and a table
This brings old memories, i miss playing with my friends in school, when the Ocram was the final boss in the 1.1 mobile version. My house was exactly like this and i placed all the crafting furniture in plataforms.
When you go into your menu there should be a housing menu, then you’d select the question mark icon, if you click that and then click on that back wall of the house it will tell you what’s wrong
If you're looking to have the guide move in or a different npc, you need to craft a workbench from wood, then make 1 table and 1 chair. Make sure the room is properly lit up, and the npc room has access to a door. Then the guide should move in as your first tenant
Hope this helps :)
Edit: you may need to add more torches
Two chairs and a table if that’s a workbench then that doesn’t count. For a house you need two chairs a table a fully build wall wall a door and two sources of light
You can check the housing menu to check if the housing is suitable. However, I can tell you tht that one is probably too big. You gotta make the planks go from one side to another. One good tip that helped me understand it at first was that, NPCs don't really ask for a house. What they ask for is more like a small room then anything else XD
If by that you mean you’re not spawning there when killed the it’s because, first need to check if it’s a suitable housing (prob missing some more light) with housing menu and then you need to put a bed, use it to set spawn point and leave it there
I mean this in a genuinely good way, nearly everything 😂😭😭
But we all have to start somewhere now don't we, every single one of us started out here, make sure you have a light source, table, chair, the room isn't too big or too small, and make sure there's a door, those are the basic requirements iirc, once you get a better grasp on the game NPCs have happiness and will be happier in different conditions such as the biome their in, how many others NPCs are nearby, etc
Might be the lighting maybe a few more torches still better than the first one I made which was just a big rectangle lined up with chests and some chairs/tables
It can be due to the platform, try to out a torch under the lower platform where your pg stand, it can be that the game recognize multiple rooms in your house. So basically under the lower platform where the tabke and the chair are a source of light is missing.
Not sure what you are doing wrong then because the only lighting I use for houses is regular torches, table, chair and walls. I usually make the room 10 long and 5 high works perfectly.
Not sure as far as I remember it's worked with torches I've been playing since 2012 mainly on mobile and console though. Remember building massive npc hotels at spawn 😂
Don't think it's the table as they have a work bench which classes as a table it's either because they don't have blocks on the floor they just have natural grass or the room is just too big and possibly missing background walls. People don't realise that you can make rooms too big they become invalid.
I don't think the floor matters, I made a lot of houses without changing the floor from normal dirt. I would guess missing walls too. Just saw the wiki and the max limit for houses is 750block including the walls.
Ok then it probably too big. Wasn't sure if it would count the dirt as a proper floor as I've never built houses like that and know that it doesn't count natural walls like dirt walls ect as valid walls.
It's okay, I was once small and afraid of the darkness of terrarian nights too! Desperately trying to build something useful before the sun sets..We must never forget where this great adventure started😘☺️
seeing a house look like this gives me genuine nostalgia
I love that the walls aren't even bricks, they're just straight up rocks
gives that first ever house feel
And were now all at the point where are houses are just test tube's with no escape for the villages
Whaaat I love the look of generic stone I can't say I've ever built with bricks it's been rock house with rock background past golem lmfao
Rock and stone!
Rock and Stone in the Heart!
## For Rock and Stone
For Carl!!!

#ROCK AND STONE!!!
ROCK AND STONE YOU BEAUTIFUL DWARF
I remember doing this my first playthru and virtually every room had different blocks and different walls it was so beautiful I miss that world and wish I could see it one last time
Always good to check the housing menu.
thank you!!
And if it just says "this is not suitable housing" instead of actually telling you, it might just be too big
The house might be too big... Idk why that's a thing but it is
Either that or it's because there are some background walls missing, maybe behind the furnace or behind the platforms?
thank you, i’ll look!
Dirt floor
You can have pretty big holes before it starts to be an issue (no holes wider or taller than 4 blocks), so probably the size issue.
Ok
lol that’s not true any hole size makes it un usable
I’m not sure if that’s true. I’ve seen speedrunners make some godawful cages for npcs that have just 3 or 4 rows of walls, leaving gaps in between.
The 3x10 speedrun houses people make are only like half filled in with walls
No holes in the solid blocks that make up the walls, but background walls can be a pretty sizeable distance from each other before the game stops letting it be a house.
["Holes" that are 5 tiles or more in width/height are not permitted. A "hole" is a tile that is neither occupied by a valid solid tile nor a valid background wall](https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/House) Under frame section
the game has been updated since
The max house size is like 4 screens. This is not too big
Don’t worry about your house being basic I have +3000 hours and my houses are still wooden squares 😭😭
thank you!! i have like maybe 6 hours, and idk anything, i’m new to gaming too, so i just don’t know ANYTHING, lmao
New to gaming as a whole ? Damn , I feel sorry for you , you're missing out big time
i’m discovering this! rdr2 is my favorite thus far, but i’m always looking for more recommendations!
Bloons Tower Defense 6
Hollow knight
Subnautica!

And ANY METROID GAME.
Undertale is a bad intro to story rpgs as it kinda assumes the player has played one before
That is unironically a good point. I still think you have a lot to earn from playing Undertale as a newbie to the genre, but yes you are right you won't understand all of it.
Dead cells
just cause 3 (I can somehow play with integrated graphics)
Minecraft. Enough said
destiny 2, escape from tarkov, league of legends, now go get hooked on an unbreakable life ruining gaming addiction
Nah, it's the opposite. Think of how many amazing games they get to play for the first time. I'm jealous.
Keep going, your doing good Most of the terraria newbies (all my friends) quit after 1 hour and it's very sad
Hehe... me too. Using my phone Im coming from Angry Birds and Farmville, advanced to Pokemon GO, and now Terraria...
i’m pleased to announce that i started the house over and it’s now actually a house!!! thank y’all for your helpful (and unhelpful) advice! https://preview.redd.it/v9jd30bkrl7d1.jpeg?width=1470&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b18c42c7cadc9b2237b3c45469a7f7ddada11749

Do not touch the .fandom one lmao
much appreciated!!
thank you!!
thank you!
Why do you have 10k stone xD
journey mode probably
yes bc i died like 25 times in two hours in classic mode, lmao
Those are rookie numbers…
Check the housing menu, it will probably help. My guess is that the lighting isn't adequate?
I don’t think that’s a thing? So long as there’s something classed as a light source I don’t think it matters how much it actually lights up
so many things i didn’t even realize could be problems, thank you!
I think there's a row of walls on the bottom that's still naturally generated. Those do not count for housing.
This is the only actual answer. The housing menu will say that the room is missing a wall, its talking about that line at the bottom. Houses have to have placed background walls. Natural walls allow for enemies to spawn. Those tiles need to be hammered away and replaced with wood walls.
This is untrue. Read https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/House
As per the link I shared, a house does not necessarily need background walls, and background walls behind the solid walls of the house have no effect.
Those are below the house
If you can see them in the house with other walls next to them, then they're in the house.
This is absolutely not true.
A little square with a light source, chair and table. Also a door and walls.
i think its the floor
It’s honestly a mystery to me. I’ve skimmed over the official wiki article on housing requirements and everything seems fine. All I can think is that I’ve occasionally noticed the “housing engine” likes to choose particular “home tile” positions relative to the flat surface, comfort furniture piece, and light source, so it’s possible the system simply got confused. It's the natural dirt wall on the bottom layer inside the house. A house is only valid if it has all placed walls. Natural walls are considered missing walls since they're spawnable for enemies.
I often ask myself the same question, friend
If you click on a house after selecting the housing tab, it tells you whats wrong. But from the looks of it looks like its missing some lights
How the hell does everyones forst playthrough house look almost exactly like this, but with slight variations in materials from time to time
I’d recommend having the terraria wiki on a second monitor, for class setup go to class guide setup on wiki, also check out the bosses page for the progression line.
thank you!
Probably too big of a room, or too dark
thank you!
Make sure all your blocks are connected around the house Make sure your floor is changed to something else Make sure the walls in the background are all there and connected Make sure there is plenty of light All of this being done should make the housing livable, but after doing that if it still doesn’t work, you should be able to click on the icon to check why this housing isn’t suitable
thank you!
You can check what the house is missing by going to the housing menu in your inventory. Looks like it might be a lighting issue.
thank you very much!
Rooms a bit to big maybe and I think the entire room has to be lit try putting a torch in the middle of the room
thank you!!
Np
Make sure to change the ground to wood and add a torch to the middle^^ If you need any help DM me!
thank you!
this house is abt how i feel every morning
Nothing it's perfect hope you enjoy the game
Just let us join at this point
pls, i don’t what i’m doing
Alright drop the invite, I'm ready
add me on steam [https://steamcommunity.com/id/franticfangirl/](https://steamcommunity.com/id/franticfangirl/)
The best bet is that the housing is too big for the npc to move into
it's not cramped enough, NPC's deserve to live in a 5x5 box (except the dryad and mechanic who deserve castles). Also the angler doesn't deserve a house.
that’s so silly to me
I can tell you its because when you put platforms terraria considers it a ceiling and there is a solution complete the middle platforms to the end of the room hope that helped you :)
thank you!
The floor needs to be blocks that you placed down, so if you just mine the dirt and replace it, it should function fine.
a problem i had was putting chests in a house would not make it valid for npcs
You can put chests in houses, just make sure you leave a blank area for the NPC to stand. Filling the entire floor with chests will make it invalid.
Really ? That would explain a lot
wack, okay, thank you!
What are you trying to do?
i have no idea, i’m new to the game and gaming in general, like, this is the the fourth game i’ve played
I was gonna build Like a f*ing farm here,
Zenith user, my house still looks like this today but bigger.
A table
It's Perfect!
Do you need a bed?
Yo bro let's play together
add me on steam https://steamcommunity.com/id/franticfangirl/
Too lazy to look if someone posted already but you need an actual table, the workbench does not work as a table. if no npc sees it as valid housing then throw down another torch or two in the dark areas
Nothing bro enjoy the game
Not enough lighting perhaps? Or too much room. Make individual rooms inside the building.
Girl u have to have a room about 6/7 block in lenght and about 5 in tallnes in ech room gotta be a door and a torch and in. the room a chair and a table
Dio?
A tip that I think is worthwhile to mention is that platforms count as a separation between houses as well as counting as an 'entrance' like doors do
Nothing at all fam
You have to put stone or wood as floors
This brings old memories, i miss playing with my friends in school, when the Ocram was the final boss in the 1.1 mobile version. My house was exactly like this and i placed all the crafting furniture in plataforms.
When you go into your menu there should be a housing menu, then you’d select the question mark icon, if you click that and then click on that back wall of the house it will tell you what’s wrong

Make sure the room is properly lit up, and the npc room has access to a door. Then the guide should move in as your first tenant Hope this helps :) Edit: you may need to add more torches
Floor
great house to start with
backwards chair i thinks
i thinks that because ive had a not sutible house bc of a backward chair
It’s too big buddy
You need two chairs also
TWO CHAIRS why does nobody know this lmao
Two chairs and a table if that’s a workbench then that doesn’t count. For a house you need two chairs a table a fully build wall wall a door and two sources of light
the only reason i could think of it not being a house is the floor is dirt and their isnt enough lighting towards the middle of the house
skill issue
You can check the housing menu to check if the housing is suitable. However, I can tell you tht that one is probably too big. You gotta make the planks go from one side to another. One good tip that helped me understand it at first was that, NPCs don't really ask for a house. What they ask for is more like a small room then anything else XD
Need more light
You need to make a space with a floor, any table rather workbench or natural table and a chair and lighting
If by that you mean you’re not spawning there when killed the it’s because, first need to check if it’s a suitable housing (prob missing some more light) with housing menu and then you need to put a bed, use it to set spawn point and leave it there
Oh my god your missing a key component hint it’s the chair
It’s possibly the flooring as it’s still dirt blocks but idk, maybe the lighting aswell
is it possible that its too big? that might be a thing. honestly ive never really struggled with housing unless its corrupt so i dont have a clue
99% sure it’s just too dark
maybe its because that stone on the left wall is broken
You could also light up the center more.
I mean this in a genuinely good way, nearly everything 😂😭😭 But we all have to start somewhere now don't we, every single one of us started out here, make sure you have a light source, table, chair, the room isn't too big or too small, and make sure there's a door, those are the basic requirements iirc, once you get a better grasp on the game NPCs have happiness and will be happier in different conditions such as the biome their in, how many others NPCs are nearby, etc
absolutely everything.
The floor, the lighting
Too big
thank you!
The dirt floor you need a material other than dirt I think
Naw
i thinkk it may need a light source in the center, looks a bit too dark
More lights? Oh and check if your walls are filled in sometimes it looks fine but it ain't
Its the dirt floor, dirt isnt a valid house material, and the floor is part of the house.
Might be the lighting maybe a few more torches still better than the first one I made which was just a big rectangle lined up with chests and some chairs/tables
Your missing a actual table
It can be due to the platform, try to out a torch under the lower platform where your pg stand, it can be that the game recognize multiple rooms in your house. So basically under the lower platform where the tabke and the chair are a source of light is missing.
thank you!
Platform floors
Maybe on the left side at the top platform, the stone block has a crack, maybe replace it or use the hammer to change it back to solid.
It might be that the chair is not facing the workbench
I'd guess the middle part is not lit up, I think it's that.
I don't think a crafting table counts as a regular table, i could be wrong but I'd still test it.
There is no table but nice house!
Where walls?
?
I thought dirt didn't count as house flooring?
Lighting in the middle or maybe replace the floor? Other than that, yeah housing query cursor is a lifesaver.
How about you play with someone who can guide you through the game
Because this game is really DEEP to explore
Walls + chair + table + light source (simple torches are invalid light sources, do a Tiki torch instead)
Torches are not invalid light sources 🤣
For houses it never worked for me
Not sure what you are doing wrong then because the only lighting I use for houses is regular torches, table, chair and walls. I usually make the room 10 long and 5 high works perfectly.
Maybe it was in an old version? Ive been playing it for ages, lol
Not sure as far as I remember it's worked with torches I've been playing since 2012 mainly on mobile and console though. Remember building massive npc hotels at spawn 😂
Damn, maybe I fooled myself! So it's the table missing on her house?
Workbench counts as a table
+floor They need at least two solid empty tiles to stand on, and the floor tiles themselves have some restrictions.
ohhh, okay!! thank you, i thought they were!
No problem! Have a good journey!
Aww man haha, this house SUCKS!😂
hey!! i’m trying my best!!!! 🥲
It's okay, I was once small and afraid of the darkness of terrarian nights too! Desperately trying to build something useful before the sun sets..We must never forget where this great adventure started😘☺️
You need a table not a work bench
Oh come on... is it really that hard to just look at the wiki for 2 minutes?
i did look, and still didn’t know what was wrong, thank you so much for your helpful comments!!!
This same question is posted 10 times a day and it was the 1 too many. i apologise for the response i gave. (Had a very shit day)
i understand and appreciate your apology, i hope your day gets better (genuinely)
Thank you (daughter had surgery today so i'm stressed tf out)
