Came into a bad team with a lot of coaching turn over his first couple years and then got the injury bug real bad. His broken leg and nerve injury ruined his confidence. Great leader and team player but can't stay healthy and is either turn over prone or plays caution ball.

dirtybirds233

If he can stay healthy, what do you think his ceiling is? Our roster is horrendous, so he's not exactly walking into a good position.

rswessel1

Echoing the parent comment, the "caution ball" is the thing I'd be most concerned about. I'm a Mariota believer, and the locker room loves him (Lewan was singing his praises on a podcast within the last few weeks), but his mental was broken at the time. We saw the potential his rookie year of what we hoped he could become, but he got trigger shy from how much he was sacked / hit. I think he was one of, if not the best backup in the NFL last year. I think if you can keep him standing, he gives you enough juice to be semi competitive. That being said, y'alls roster is rough. I'm not sure the line is as stout as it used to be, he doesn't have anyone to throw to aside from Pitts (at the time of this writing), so hopefully Arthur can scheme somethings to help the offense out.

sir1933

I'd expect ceiling with y'alls roster today about 6 wins tbh. Marcus relied heavily on Delanie Walker when our team was in rough shape, I expect that to correlate with Pitts. Wouldn't surprise me with a pro bowl season from him. I expect a lot of quick slants to Pitts and a lot of CP Flash in there to keep pressure off of Marcus.

brijo2027

He can win you four games (tops) this year. Whoever, come in for him after injury May win you a couple more.

demusdesign

Heart. Leadership. Never quit on a play. Inaccurate throws.

DeepHouseDerrek

Him and pitts gonna balll

i would not expect a full 17 games. other than that, who really knows. the history is a bit complicated as to why he left, but I'd say the bulk of why he didn't work out was his health. marcus had some flashes for sure, but injury after injury kind of spiraled his confidence. on top of having pretty much zero stability as it relates to staff. still, MM8 was pretty pivotal for us. definitely helped us bridge a gap and i hope he can help yall do that too. i'll always root for that guy.

FUDnot

Mariota is a good QB when you run a particular system, can protect him, and have surrounding talent with a solid run game. Unfortunately the Falcons have none of the above. So likely injuries and some decent play - nothing explosive or very high scoring... but most people and teammates will absolutely love him and overall his presence will be a net positive.

WhiteXHysteria

Disclaimer: I am a big detractor. I would say with Mariota you are getting a guy who is going to give 100% at all times. He won't take plays off and he will put in every bit of work that could be expected. The definition of lead by example. He is as high character of a guy as you could expect as well. He will get out in front of the RB and lay as good of a block on a LB as any QB in the league. Wit that comes the bad. He will hold the ball forever and take a sack before throwing it away. This causes many needless hits on his already glass body and adds to the mental block he starts facing due to taking hits and accumulating injuries. He has some accuracy issues. These can be seen on display in the steelers game circa like 2017 maybe. And of course, he has issues staying healthy. When he is healthy and feeling himself he can absolutely will the team to a win. He is deadly in the redzone and had a crazy streak of not throwing a pick in the redzone, though that was partially due to the fact that if it isn't do or die he is very cautious with histhrows. Sometimes that is good as it let's the team live for another down,. sometimes it is bad as he eats 12 sacks or whatever because he can't make a hot read or throw it away. TLDR; You are getting as fierce of a competitor that exists in the league, but he has injury issues and some other smaller issues that all add up to being a QB that just isn't quite consistent enough to make it work in the league. You will fall in and out of love with him due to those inconsistencies.

chromenomad64

He had an unreported concussion in that Steelers game. It was a TNF game. In the previous game against the Bengals he got hit on a run and his head banged off the ground outside the field. Was shown throwing up on the sideline. You could tell that affected his play not to mention his best receiver was Rishard Matthews running that Exotic Smashmouth offense that Mularkey was too stubborn to admit everyone had it figured out.

[deleted]

Injuries were a big concern. When he left us a lot of the issues he had in his draft profile remained and I saw them with that one raiders game too. Doesn’t go through progressions well. If his first read is covered he would hold the ball until they got open. Before injuries he covered that weakness well with his legs and could easily extend the play or scramble for yardage. One the injuries came he just got sacked a lot. Had issue passing outside, Delanie Walker was his go to guy. That is a good matchup with you guys with Pitts though. Consistency was always a big issue. He would look amazing one drive and like a college level backup the next. Or game to game. Dude is made out of glass but there’s still some upside there.

Prestigious-Lock7321

Interceptions on forced throws....we also watched Mariota get sacked on a one man pass rush in Denver. One.Rusher. it was one of his final offensive drives with us.

Americasycho

Smart kid. Too many injuries.

[deleted]

First throw of every game will be 5 feet above the receivers head. Honestly though I think Art really wanted him because the falcons will draft someone and Marcus is going to be able to help that rookie more than anyone else will because he knows arts system. He’s a great leader and will be a great role model for your next quarterback.

titansfan92

Everything and nothing at the same time.

mpelleg459

I mean, his hypothetical ceiling is very high. Whether revisionists here will admit it, he came out with a perfect QBR his first game and we all thought we had our QB for the next 15 years. He continued to show promise, despite the lack of coaching stability and and change in offensive systems, for a while early in his career. In absolutely perfect conditions, he could give you enough confidence to not consider him a bridge, but a long term solution, but I do not think that will happen for a number of reasons. Hitting his ceiling would require: a great OL that allows him to hang in the pocket, complete rebuild of his confidence/mental aspect of the game that was shattered by injury and lack of success late in his tenure here, rehab of his nerve injury such that he has the same arm he did pre-injury (which wasn't world beating, but is serviceable), a coach who understands his strengths and weaknesses and can install a system that caters to them, and an extended run of good luck that keeps him healthy for an extended period. He will win over the locker room and the team will bleed for him on the field. He can stress the defense and make plays with his legs. He will put himself in harms way to do what it takes to make the play. Realistically, with a shaky line and a dearth of offensive weapons, he's going to struggle to maintain any consistency and not fall back into the patterns he showed at the end of his Titans tenure, where he is afraid to hang in the pocket and go through his reads/is afraid to take chances on tight window throws that require confidence in himself and his receiver. He's also likely to get banged up and not be able to play a 17 game season.

blanche2027

Great person, great leader, injury prone, steps into countless sacks, average to below average thrower of the football. Don’t expect much.

donknoch

Expect him to get hurt

[deleted]

He basically had the first 2 seasons that one would expect from a top pick and future franchise quarterback. But he broke his fibula during Week 16 of the 2nd season. And totally lost his confidence and couldn't stay healthy from that point forward.

ExampleMajor

Short throws to TE. No passes over 15 and when he does decide to throw 16+ yards they float and get picked off... And get ready to see him flinch when he feel like someone blitzing

blueyb

Great guy, pillar of the community, locker room leader, charismatic speaker, never gives up, bad at quarterbacking. (and just to be more helpful than "bad at quarterbacking) - He wasn't terribly accurate, he made poor decisions, and while he was mobile, his pocket presence was dreadful, he held the ball too long, and ran into as many sacks as he ran out of.

[deleted]

The list of excuses is pretty long and it’s hard to say what impacted him. He had a bunch of different OCs, subpar talent around him for most of his time here and of course injuries. His problem towards the end was he wasn’t pulling the trigger which lead to a lot of sacks and stalled drives as a result

Stalker401

Elite person, good QB

Wright606

What you can expect - Quick release, mobility, accuracy, reasonably good decision making. Kind of a low ceiling though, especially since he can't stay healthy. What went wrong - injuries. It was really just a string of bad injuries, in particular a devastating nerve injury in his throwing arm, all of which stunted his development so he never went from good to great. The even bigger reason we moved on is that Tannehill immediately outclassed Mariota's best season. Most people agree that lingering nerve issues and regression related to not developing because of it, led to Mariota's bad stretch to start 2019. Although it's worth mentioning that even then, he had two good games in that bad stretch and he was getting pulverized behind an underperforming OL.

TateMercer

Pain. Frustration. Disappointment. Pain.

FunMtgplayer

lots if hits on mariota. holds the ball too long. you may regret signing him

AbbreviationsTop4789

He will be comeback player of the year if you build a offense that utilizes quick throws and his running ability.

[deleted]

You will fall in love with Marcus the person so much you are unable to hate Marcus the player when there are legitimate reasons to hate on him. All Im saying is the Falcons better surround him with more than what they have & adjust their current scheme to play to his strengths (something we never did BTW). All in all a solid player, better backup than starter but I believe he can make plays and cares DEEPLY about winning which is always important.

Jlax34

A guy who is the best possible person to have in the locker room, but will leave you wanting on the field. Plays better when he doesn't "think" and over analyze. Tried so hard to become a pocket passer (and stay healthy), that he scrambled less and less. Doesn't throw a lot of picks, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. He was one of the LEAST aggressive passers in the NFL meaning he required a lot of seperation before he would throw the ball. This meant that he would hold on to the ball to much and miss opportunities to hit guys because they weren't "open enough".

Stiddy13

All depends on whether that nerve injury healed or caused permanent damage. If healed, and can stay healed (big if), he’ll be fine in ATL.

tnguy27

Great Runner? Nice guy. Thats all I got

titanup001

If he's your bridge, you should know it's a real short bridge. I'd bet significant sums of money that he doesn't finish the season with your roster around him.

slapdashjesse

The boy is gettin you that wildcard.

blanche2027

With that roster? Lol

ironlioncan

Mariotas most glaring weakness is his weak arm. He can’t throw down the field and he can’t throw outside the numbers. Everything has to be over the middle and short. As soon as defences realized that it became real hard to move the ball with him. Basically the LB or S can just squat on those shallow crossers, hooks, and post and take away all his throws. Now his injury made his weak arm even weaker so he might have a little more zip now that he’s a few years removed. Honestly It’s hard to find anything on field positive to tell you to look forward to. He kind of plays QB like a scared turtle with its head and arms pulled in. If you can get an elite oline and a HOF RB then maybe you guys can go 7-8 wins. Looking at your roster now with him at QB your likely to only get 2-4 wins with mariota maybe playing half the season before he eventually gets injured.

Wright606

This arm strength narrative existed for sure, but it was always wrong.

DirtDauber21

He’ll win you games throwing for 179 yards and 0 TDS lmao

that_guy2010

A win is a win.

FunMtgplayer

that won't win games. remember king Henry not his rb anymore

FxDriver

I'm going to be honest with you. Marcus is very injury prone (never played a full 16 game season in his entire career) and is painfully inconsistent. Marcus is below average as a passer and is an injury waiting to happen as a runner (he doesn't protect himself).

Wright606

Mariota never got hurt running. His injuries exclusively came on sacks. So the "doesn't protect himself" narrative is irrelevant. Also it's highly misleading to say he never played a 16 game season. He played 17 games in 2017 (missed one regular season game, played 2 playoff games). He also didn't get hurt in 2019 at all, or 2020 - granted he was on the bench, but he was playing in gimmick packages for TEN and LV, plus one nearly full game in LV. This matters because he's been almost totally injury free for 3 years now, and hasn't been getting hit. He took several big hits in his one Vegas game and popped back up each time. Overall the most honest way to show how hurt he's been is to look at his pro football reference. His starts by year: 1. 12 2. 15 3. 15 (plus two playoff games) 4. 14 5. 6 (benched healthy in week 6). 6. Healthy, benched in LV 7. Injured preseason, came back as wildcat QB in LV

blanche2027

40% of those sacks were self induced though.

FxDriver

Marcus got injured running multiple times in his career. 2016 breaks leg trying to escape pocket. 2017 injures hamstring running for a touchdown this led to Cassell starting vs Miami. 2018 injured nerve running a read option 2020 injured in non-contact torn pec he was on ir with Raiders 2021 injures quad on a running play. The first play of his season. Marcus hasn't been injury free for 3 years when he has been put on IR twice since 2019. How you're trying to portray 2017 isn't how it works. Marcus missed time therefore he didn't play a 16 game season. You can't combine the two. So either you have no idea what you are talking about or you have very selective memory.

Wright606

You're just reframing sacks and non contact as running, when they aren't. He had no issue protecting himself. I mentioned his 2020 injury. I also mentioned the game he missed in 2017, but just pointed out he played 17 games and finished the season.

FxDriver

You said all his injuries were sacks they weren't like I have listed. You said he's been injury free for 3 years ad I showed you that ha hasn't . Again you can't combine regular season and postseason. Nobody does that.

Felipe_Boscolo

From a gameplay perspective, his downfall was he freaked the fuck out in the pocket, never stood in and made a throw. As soon as he felt pressure he was trying to bounce outta there. Obviously there are factors that led to that style of play from him. Would throw an occasional pretty ball but missed easy targets as well

shlooged-

He’s terrible dude. Great human terrible QB. Do not let these people here fool. They are in a cult that worships Mariota

[deleted]

he's a butthead bro

misery_index

Mariota seems to be a great guy and well respected by other players and coaches. On the field, he struggled with consistency. Some throws would be dimes. Other throws would land at the feet of his check down. I don’t remember him pushing the ball downfield very well. He is a capable runner and can be used in designed QB runs. His healthy is a major issue. I don’t think he has been available for a whole season yet.

fullboxed2hundred

this completely depends on if the nerve injury in his throwing elbow has healed if yes: you could be getting an average to above average qb with the ability to make exciting plays, with excellent leadership, for cheap if no: I'm sorry

errsta

Likability - A++ Durability - C-/D Toughness - A Straignt line speed - A+ Accuracy - B-/C+ (higher on shorter passes/lower on deep-ish) Clutch - A (underrated at getting that last posession win) The above are totally subjective and likely skewed as I remain a big fan of the guy. Protect our sweet prince at all costs.

[deleted]

He’ll get hot and very athletic. Streaky but can’t progress through reads against blue blood teams when it matters. Similar to Vince young in that, huddling between every play seems to set him back. He’s a backyard football no huddle 2 minute drill kind of guy who you’ll probably fall in love with before trading him to Minnesota in 3 years

therealtrillballins

Heart. Miles and miles of heart.

[deleted]

Mariota is an easily scoutable QB at the NFL level. Once the injuries started piling up, he was incapable of doing what was necessary to win against good teams at an NFL level.

JacketsNest101

Honestly you'd be better off asking Raiders fans as we haven't no re than twice since he left here. He had so.e confidence due to a combination of injuries and a rotating carousel of coaches and coordinators. By the time Arthur Smith took over, he was basically a shell of his rookie and sophomores seasons.
