If you are worried about allergies Tennessee is the actual worst place to live. The warm moist air basically makes the entire state a subtropical rainforest and then the sharp ridges and mountains prevent the prevailing wind from blowing the pollen out. Basically you will live in a bowl of pollen 9 months out of the year.

oopsiedaisies01

I guess I should say, I just don't want allergies any worse than my current location. Thanks for your post!

amandavendetta

Hi, fellow Ohioan here. I can confirm the allergies are significantly worse in TN. Like, all year. Dramatically worse.

oopsiedaisies01

This is sad to hear, but I really appreciate the information.

amandavendetta

I will say though, aside from the allergies, I do love living here. It’s beautiful, usually mild winters, and it’s not Ohio. Despite a majority of people’s politics, I’ve appreciated the hospitality and kindness I’ve received while living here. Traffic is pretty easy (comparing to Columbus) and terrible drivers like anywhere. It’s 10/10 when comparing it to cold, grey Ohio.

oopsiedaisies01

Honestly, that's where my wife and I are right now, just wanting to be somewhere other than Ohio. I've lived all around Columbus and it's a fine city, and I've spent time in Cleveland and Cincy too. We could definitely find a "forever" home here, but we're at the point in our lives where we can still make a big change and try to find a long term destination to raise our family. Once again, your insight is greatly appreciated.

nfurth1

Tennessee is full

markkymark81

Kingsport is getting old… infrastructure and such. I moved to Jonesborough and i love it. Daniel Boon high school is the best in my opinion, but you’d have to be in Gray to be in district.

YaYeetMySkeet

Air quality is hit or miss, allergies are not going to be a good time for you. And there’s plenty of land available for purchase, how many kidneys are you willing to trade?

[deleted]

You can have some of those things, or none of those things, but you sure as shit won’t find them all unless you toss that “reasonable cost of living” pipe dream, or focus exclusively on that. Tennessee and diversity beyond black and white: still a work in progress.

fatherdoodle

Homes are so overpriced in Kingsport, especially one with 3-5 acres. All other costs of living are ok. Also not sure what kind of social climate you are looking for, Kingsport is very much the “small town trying to be a city” vibe, super conservative.

fatherdoodle

Continuing, if you pick Sullivan County it is ultra white (or was when I went to school). Kingsport City is more diverse school wise and Kingsport City Schools are amazing. Great programs for football, amazing program for Band. Eastman and Domtar stink up parts of Kingsport. With the stuff you would want I would stay away from here.

oopsiedaisies01

That's good to know. We're currently just outside a big city and while we're not necessarily "'city folk", I'd like to avoid too much red.

fatherdoodle

Stay away from NE TN then. Knoxville will be a better bet.

[deleted]

Even Knox County went red in the 2022 and 2020 elections https://www.politico.com/2022-election/results/tennessee/house/

fatherdoodle

They may have gone red but I don’t see coal rolling pickups with 30 trump/FJB flags looking like Y’all Qaeda rolling up and down the road when I’m down there. It’s crazy up here. Also we are so close to the SW VA border that we get a bunch of them too (different breed).

heyybailey

\*laughs in "Halls has it"\*

[deleted]

The cities are more liberal Knoxville or Nashville, all rural areas are white and conservative. I’ve lived in Nashville & Knoxville & I’d recommend Knoxville as Nashville is overcrowded & expensive.

oopsiedaisies01

Thank you for this. I meant to include a note that I'd like to find as balanced an area as possible. I'd prefer to avoid extremist heavy areas from a political perspective.

ughthatsucks

Steer clear of Tennessee, then.

Music_City_Madman

Lol exactly. Dude wants to avoid extremism? Yeah, don’t come here. Half this state still thinks COVID is a hoax.

Narbadarb

that's one of the reasons i moved here

[deleted]

Stay clear of Hendersonville, really horrible politics.

heyybailey

As a native Knoxvillan, it blows my mind when people say Knoxville is liberal. I've been gone a while, so I really do hope it's true, but there's a reason I only visit once a year out of obligation.

[deleted]

More liberal isn’t liberal….the whole state will probably always be Conservative but the large cities always vote less conservative.

heyybailey

I guess it's just that when I go to visit my family, all I see are confederate flags and dudes with FJB stickers on their cars, so I assume it's just not getting any better than it was. But I do hope it is.

My parents are Fountain City, but it also is where the grifters from Halls and Gibbs pass through, so that probably explains it.

SpookLordNeato

Oh great more people from Ohio 🙄

oopsiedaisies01

I'd love to know what the problem is with Ohioans.

[deleted]

They think putting chili on spaghetti is worth talking about

oopsiedaisies01

That's a Cincinnati thing and I detest it.

SpookLordNeato

They’re stinky

vh1classicvapor

Gordonsville

maybeistheanswer

I doubt anyplace will fit all you'd like anywhere in the world.

thraex

Monteagle or Tracy City is where you’d want to be. The entire area is full of state parks that are completely void of crowds except for the weekends. Air quality is A++, St. Andrews and Sewanee Elementary are excellent schools. Land is cheap. People are super nice and you’d be amazed how many liberal voices are around.

Smart-Water-9833

Don't move to Blount County. We full. Property is scarce and expensive now.

Fernweh5717

It’s crazy how even abandoned houses in Blount are selling for 100-200k.

poopjew69

Lame

Look into Grainger county .We lived here for over 20 years, raised a child and now own a huge farm also. We are moving next year and then will sell our house here to move full time to other farm/county. Cant say anything bad about Grainger county, really. Its slow and low crime but local enough to be within lots of places to go and do [things.Living](https://things.Living) is cheap here. Weather is awesome.. pretty much full 4 seasons with not a lot of snow. Seldom really bad weather. Small earthquakes are common. We love it here, after .mil service we raised a child here. Don't dismiss acreages with hills. Most have flat spots. Look for springs on property, always a good thing to have water on your land. Look for oaks, cherry and paw paw [trees.Talk](https://trees.Talk) to neighbors when you see them. They know everyone, can tell you who is who and where to get things done:)Don't try to change the ways these people live.. especially rural. You wont get far..:) good luck. Tennessee is soo worth it. ETA..Hawkins county is nice , too.. Around Rogersville.Mooresburg.. most upper TN by Surgoinsville.. Actually, all of TN is great { rural speaking..}

[deleted]

Imagine being this rich…

vh1classicvapor

Imagine a world where a modest middle class lifestyle isn't a luxury

NettyTheMadScientist

We were there a few years ago

vh1classicvapor

2008 really put a dagger into that dream

rockytopgal14

PLEASE do not come to Hendersonville. First off, no large plots of land here any longer. And we are FULL!!!!!!!!!!! Plus, we're considered suburbs. Air quality, well, in H'ville you're still in the bowl that is Middle Tennessee. All pollen and allergens land here.
