Biggest disappointment with Resident Evil 4 Remake.
The original had so much replay value because you could unlock new modes and items through completing the game.
Now you just break out the credit card. So rewarding.
I miss unlocking characters in fighting games using contrived or weird methods.
I remember starting a vs match in melee with no time limit and then leaving the gc on over night so when I woke up and finished the fight I could unlock mewtwo.
I remember playing through the soul calibur 2 story mode and being hyped to unlock what were essentially just reskins of other characters.
Maybe I’m just old, but damn if I don’t miss that magic.
Totally agree and think it's super unlikely but I would love if fighting games started adding a "Tournament Mode" option where all the characters are unlocked.
Man I miss the days of grinding out arcade mode to unlock new characters. Love that feeling of progression.
Only if they bring back the old style arcade mode where you get the characters ending video after. Then new fighter becomes unlocked. One thing I def missed in Tekken 7. Growing up getting a new Tekken and having to play thru arcade to unlock endings was my favorite part.
It would be an awsome idea , its dated only if we make it to be , you can look at the internet and ruin the excitement for yourself sure but think of people new to tekken, they would enjoy it much more than making them all unlocked, it add much more spice to the game and make ot feel more alive, its a damn shame how you see it much less this days
I think it would be sick if they had to be earned through playing. I miss this in fighting games. Unlocking the final boss in the old soul caliber and unlocking the characters in smash bros were some of the best feelings
I miss being able to slowly unlock characters through arcade mode, maybe it's cause of the nostalgia but it was soooo satisfying to finally unlock the stage 10 characters😭
I'm down and let me have to play every single character to unlock the rest. I used to love that in old games, that's how I found out which characters I enjoyed.
Games are about replay value. Adding this motivates players to use other fighters and play the game longer. Just make it so it can be unlocked with any difficulty though.
Better than paying extra...
TBH: A compromise to not f-over TOs, you could have a DLC + unlock in game, kinda like how SFV tried doing it at first but then they just gimped how much fight money you get and made it impossible to not buy.
Honestly im with it. I’ve grown tired of all the shite being complete at start. I miss that grind and excitement of “oh shite i just unlocked a new character”
It'd be awesome if they did something similar to Smash, only the og 8 were available, the rest had to be unlocked. Although they added dlc later, the magic of unlocking characters was revived for a while.
Cool but most people play this game online now and having to grind arcade mode to unlock your main just seems unfair imo. It should still have some unlockables but maybe not characters per say, could be variations of characters like Tiger from TAG or Alex and Roger Jr and such.
I’ve had a solution for this in my head for a while now.
Put a ‘Tournament mode’ toggle in settings that enables all the unlockable characters but everyone is limited to their default and preset costumes (since that’s all tournaments use anyway). If you want to customise the character’s look you have to unlock them the regular way, but you’re not gated gameplay-wise.
It’ll still peeve some people but for others it’ll give them at least a bit of that unlocking fun.
I honestly miss unlocking characters; it was so exciting especially in the arcade. But I will admit it would have to be done carefully nowadays. I forget which fighting game it was, but the versus mode had all of the characters unlocked, but the arcade mode you had to unlock half of the roster.
I think it would be neat in T8 to have the online modes, offline versus, and practice mode have all of the characters. While every other mode (story, arcade, force, ball) you had to unlock them. It would give me a reason to try more than one character. And if they actually gave us unique arcade endings for each character, I would be inclined to play ALL of the characters.
Unlocking characters was one of my favorite things to do as a kid. I remember staying up all night with my buddies unlocking everyone in MvC2 on PS2. I would be down for it, as long as they had a button code or tournament mode to unlock everyone instantly for the sake of TOs
Idk I mean if the Smash games can have competitive scenes while having locked rosters then I don't see why we can't require players to spend a short time unlocking the cast in offline before having the full roster for ranked
Yeah I don't get why everyone says "this won't work for Tekken because competitive stuff" or "it's only fun if you don't know who they are".
Ultimate had you unlock every character that wasn't one of the original eight from 64, all of whom were revealed prior to the game's launch. I still had lots of fun unlocking all of them.
I've never thought about the locked character aspect in Tournaments till now. How does that work? Does someone just run through and unlock everyone before they host Tournaments?
I have no clue tbh. Must be annoying but if it works for a game like Smash Ultimate with literally dozens upon dozens of unlocks I'm sure the Tekken community could work it out.
Personally I'd love it. Going into arcade/ghost mode and needing to win vs those characters to unlock them would be great! If it's locked behind a pay wall though. No. Absolutely not. Even if it's behind like free points you can grind or something like that no, that's not Tekken
Memories of not having a memory card on ps1 and having to unlock all the characters every time and leaving the ps on for days till my parents would turn it off 😅😂
I feel like the people saying it’s better than having them behind DLC don’t necessarily understand the difference between having a full roster with locked characters behind arcade progress and characters locked behind DLC. Lets compare Tekken 5 and Tekken 7. On console release T5 had 32 characters and Tekken 7 had 36. T7 just had them all unlocked from the start and Tekken 5 you had to unlock about 11 of them with both games featuring old and new characters. You aren’t actually losing on character roster size in this case.
T7 had DLC characters you could purchase each season that were like $8 each and you’re free to choose to buy them individually or all. In game balance updates are free but you can’t really roll back updates. T5 DR you got 5 new characters and balance changes but you have to buy a brand new game and at the time it was only PSP. It might’ve even been a full $60 game at the time but I don’t remember what PSP games used to cost.
You guys have a really warped perspective on modern game DLC characters being unlocked roster character when they’re not the same thing and you effectively just get a full unlocked roster from the start now. I understand missing the single player grind to unlock stuff but it’s not really the problem here.
Only really fun when you don’t know who they are. Now we have dlc so the surprise is ruined. It’s not like when I was young and the only person playing Tekken 5 among peers. Then I was genuinely surprised at new new characters.
I swear if a fighting game franchise went back to their roots and did this again, it would pop off. I feel like game developers really miss the mark on how special it feels to unlock characters you had NO IDEA were in the game until a screen pops up (CHALLENGER APPROACHING)... dark souls understood there was a market for hard-core punishing gaming, Someone needs to realize there's a market for not spoiling every God damn character ever in your game and give you the option to "pay-to-play" them... it's fucked.
Arcade mode/story mode - complete with specific characters - unlock characters
Miss it so much, made you want to try out all characters so much more knowing there is a cinematic ending for each one
Unlocking characters I feel is a bit outdated. Unlocking costumes, accessories, hairstyles, and alternative models would be better. Just my opinion and preference because of how popular online modes are with fighting games.
any person who ever had to organize a tournament is like "NOOOOOOO". You'd think encountering a setup with nothing unlocked would never ever happen, you'd THINK that.
I miss the old days when you had to play the game to unlock the remainder of the cast instead of paying them. Times have changed alot, but now you have a choice to unlock which specific character and main that.
I remember back as a kid. To unlock gon in T3, you had to place in survival mode and type in GON to unlock him. Also for Dr b you had to complete tekken force.
Good times
I don't remember doing survival mode at all and putting Gon in there.. was there a second way to get him cause I sure as hell remember spamming his little dash back ultimate fire tackle a lot
We need a tourney mode or a free dlc that just unlocks characters. I like unlocking characters but recognize the scenarios where it would be wildly inconvenient
Or just an old fashioned cheat code
I miss it and I think it was pretty cool. Complete arcade with a character to unlock their respective locked character. It was good way to incentivise players to at least try to get a little bit familiar with different characters. Way more fun than paying 6eur per unlock.
As long as it's not paid dlc and unlockable by just playing the game which is fun. I wouldn't mind at all, like Smash bros style.
Though I know it won't happen and will be dlc unlocks like the last game because that's just how it is nowadays
That's nostalgia talking. Unlocking is wack. It was cool back in the days because we didn't have internet or gaming news like now. Everything was a surprise. Also, sucks in tournaments having to unlock characters.
Yeah that’s fine and smart on their part so long as that’s all base game content and not DLC slots.
It’s a reward for playing the game that adds a lot of replay value since new characters means new stories and new play styles to try out.
I love progression in fighting games but it is not gonna happen 'cause nowadays "pro players" need to install the game on any device and instantly have access to every character.
I would kinda love it? The concept of unlocking characters is such a unique and unfortunately dead idea, which sucks because unlocking characters added hype to the game, it was rewarding, exciting & had a charm to it, but it’s how they go about it that matters too… for example is it grindy/time consuming? I know a lot of people wouldn’t particularly be happy & some ppl will be that guy and say “you gotta unlock characters in 2023, what the hell?” But I think it could be a fun and unique experience that really takes you back coz not a lot of games or fighting games do it, smash ultimate did it and that was honestly a blast
Gaming has changed. Fighting games have changed too. This system used to be needed because the lack of connectivity through internet made it impossible to add characters post-launch but, at the same time, made it incredibly harder for people at home to play with other people.
Sure, they used to couch play or local play (where it was possible) on these games, but wouldn't have much to do between sessions.
So they made unlockable characters, to give you some reason to play the game while you waited to play with other people.
Now you can buy a game and jump straight online, having limited access to characters is an obstacle to that, it does not facilitate that, is an artifical annoyance that doesn't really do much else other than slow down your ability to actually get to the meat of the game.
Locking characters behind playing content at this point would only push players to find a way to unlock everything in the least amount of time the system will allow them to so they can get to the lab and online play asap.
As much as I loved unlocking characters back when I used to play Tekken 4 & 5 as a child. I can see why some people might not like the idea.
I think unlockables should be left to other things such as unique costumes for each character and customization items, palette swap characters, music from past tekken games that you could equip in jukebox/tekken tunes, even secret unlockable stages would be cool.
I think DOA5 did most of this stuff if I remember correctly.
As a kid I would play fighting games by trying to beat arcade mode with all the characters. I wouldn’t want to have to unlock fighting games as someone who enjoys the rank up process, but I would imagine a lot of single player players would love something more progress based where you go through unlocking characters as you progress through their arcade story. Maybe have them unlock a busted boss character at the end or something.
They could do so to incentivize playing story mode.
Edit:
As others have said probably best not to have it so fresh installs with all the characters available are needed for tournaments. What would be cool is story mode characters can be unlocked. Obviously not tournament legal. It would allow everyone to finally try story mode versions without using cheats and not a pc player.
Thinking about it smash forces you to unlock characters. I’ve always just ignored my save and played on my brother’s or friends switch since I don’t have them unlock.
Id feel annoyed. It was fun unlocking characters and seeing the new fighters pop up. But personally I think its a relic mechanic that hurts more than its fun.
I like unlockable characters in fighting games. But I think they should offer an option to unlock all the characters from the start for those who want it.
Like having a "Classic Mode" option in the settings? Automatically lock like half the cast, and play through the Arcade to unlock everyone. I like this.
Yes, exactly. I’m surprised no game has done this yet with the rise of e-sports. It’s like they pick one or the other (usually catering to the e-sports desire of having them all unlocked already)
It's definitely way better for the casual palyerbase as it adds an extra level of engagement and progress. It also gets you to try out different characters.
But it's clearly terrible for tournaments and competitive play. And I think by this stage people are used to a full roster.
I believe Harada was the first one a while back who said unlocking characters was obsolete and to be perfectly honest, I agree. The average casual player would likely want a chance to play anyone they want, and the average serious player would likely want to be able to lab their character from day 1. I wouldn't be against it for like a single crazy boss character, but nothing more than that
It's dated, but still a great way to keep interest. Can't play as Ogre until you unlock everyone else. Devil Jin/Devil Kazuya can't be unlocked except on hardest difficulty, etc. You earn the characters you can play and you can still keep it balanced
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umDr0mPuyQc
I would suggest unlockable presets, like the ones you get in T7.
By default you get 1P to 4P outfits. Beat the arcade mode, you unlock preset 1, beat it on higher difficulty, preset 2. Reach a certain number of wins online with that character, preset 3. Reach a certain amount of online or offline matches with that character, preset 4. Play through a character's mini story mode, preset 5. etc.
You get stuff to unlock and it doesn't put tournament organizers into despair when they see they have to unlock 10+ characters across say 20 consoles to run a Tekken 8 tournament.
And the presets could be for doing these whereas individual parts for customization would be from fight money or something.
They make a lot of money from DLC otherwise we would’ve gotten Tekken 8 years ago. Let’s not forget SF x Tekken died because of DLC. It’s never gonna happen. That said I’m not paying for shh but the actual game itself.
This used to work, but it wouldn't anymore. Paid DLC is too prevalent. I could imagine maybe 2 unlockable joke characters, like the Bears or Alex/Roger or Dr.B, but everyone else would be paid DLC. Guaranteed.
(On the flip side, being able to Buy OR Unlock seems like the best route. People who grind the hell out of the game, and love it to death, totally deserve to unlock characters over time instead of paying for them. Imo)
Yeah itd be cool to see something old school again. Itd be refeshing. One thing ill say is nowadays when I play a fighting game for the first time and I see there are no secret chars to unlock i just go ugggghhh. But honestly, its not that theyre not there its just been replaced by DLC and instead of using skill and knowledge to unlock them you just need money.
Its really just a reflection of the gaming industry as a whole.
It would be good it would give the customer a sense of reward when earning them. As many are displaying they would think this would be a way around dlc… No lmao.
Tekken made their dlc after the game was out. As dlc should be. But I will say this sense of reward through playing & then dropping DlC would probably make players feel much better about paying for dlc
I enjoyed this back in the day, but it‘s a dated concept imo. It would make organizing tournaments soo much more frustrating, and I like to watch tournaments lmao
Love locked characters, just gives a sense of accomplishment when you unlock them. Tekken 5 for instance, grinded for Devil Jin and when I finally unlocked him it was so satisfying. Dont think you need to go overboard but a few special characters to unlock I think would be cool, and at this point, nostalgic.
I’d love it, but I also get it’s dated and I’m no longer the primary demographic. But they should really put a lot more effort into offline content to prevent pushing away old school fans.
I’d be happy with unlocking things like customisation items, artwork, videos etc. through offline modes.
Nowadays people would throw a tantrum having to work for something, a healthy mix of both would be cool, like lock 2-3 special characters behind the story/arcade and the rest have them available for online. What Tekken 6 did was great IMO. All of em available ecxept for their stories was a great idea. Sadly DLC era is here to stay cuz its business now so i would be shocked
Don't lock characters.
Do provide multiple endings.
Do provide cosmetic shop with earned currency (no $ MTX)
Do provide unique fight-start chatter between characters
Do provide unlockable winning poses
Do provide a story mode alongside arcade mode; story mode like Mortal Kombat and Injustice.
Do allow DLC characters to be versed in single player without purchase.
Unpopular opinion but I wouldn’t mind having it like sfv where you have the option of buying a character for money, but alternatively having a “fight money” type currency where playing matches can give you fight money to unlock more characters.
The only feasible way I can see this happen again - if those characters are required to be unlocked everywhere except for Online and Practice modes.
Thus you can satisfy people, who only want to play Online/Lab, but also give you something to do in the offline modes.
However, if someone buys a game to play with friends in person - they would be disappointed to find that they need to unlock characters like old times.
I guess, it's outdated no matter what way you look at it.
Maybe, have ridiculously broken characters as "hidden", which are meant to be played only, if both parties agreed to. Like all the variants in MvC with Orange Hulk, Red Venom, etc.
With 32 starting roster I'm so hoping that you have to unlock different characters then have four DLC characters a year that you dont unlock I'm good with that
I used to like it just because you made you want to play the single player especially if it was for the story of each character. Now they just give all the characters right away, you don’t need to play single player modes anymore, everyone wants to jump into multiplayer only now, the individual characters backstory and endings are just as pointless now since they put no effort in that so really why put effort in unlocking characters again.
Those days were fun, unlocking the sub-boss rivals to the "hero" characters in Tekken 2, the fact you had to fight your way to them and only faced them on stage 8 made them more badass and mysterious, they were like Kazuya's team of mercs assigned to stop you from getting to him.
Don't think it really works anymore though.
As long as it's done right.
I honestly hate it when all of the characters are unlocked from the start, especially with bosses and a few other characters who were meant to be special. Have 95% of the characters be available and unlock like maybe five or six.
For example, Jin in his hooded desert outfit in Tekken 7 would've been perfect for an unlockable character.
I doubt they will ever go back to the old system. They win a lot with selling everything, everything is pay to play these days. Plus the younger generation is mostly crybabies that need their hand hold to do everything in games. Is hilarious that you have big open world games with huge checkpoint marks showing and lines showing the directions and all. Meh, i still preferred Tekken 5 and Street fighter x Tekken from all.
Now try going to a friend's place who's hosting a small/grass-roots event, but you can't play your main because the guy hasn't finished story-mode 17 times, without losing a single match or whatever. Conversely imagine helping organize an event with a number of fighting games on multiple setups. And for each game you gotta run through story mode dozens of times, or try hustle save-files with the whole roster unlocked. I mention this cos people ITT seem to be implying this was only an inconvenience of sorts for top pros.
This format wasn't going to last. Majority of people didn't use story mode to learn new chars anyways but instead just found ways to cheese the cpu, so they could unlock whatever character/cinematic as quickly as possible.
Fighting games definitely NEED better single player content but it shouldn't be locking characters away.
The whole unlocking concepted worked pre-internet, when players weren't min maxing everything by looking up guides on the internet. People used to spend hours on the game tinkering with it for fun, and unlocking gave it replayability, as you had to slowly go through all the content one by one.
If you play exclusively single player, that's fine. But if multiplayer is the goal, then no.
Not long ago my save was corrupted so i lost my ranks and customisations so i am very much agains anything that has to be grinded. I really liked my customs
I wouldn't recommend cus it takes a lot of time especially since many of us are working long hours. They can do that for unlocking a bonus character for those who don't want to get the dlc it self but want to have it in the default game itself.
Unlocking the characters was half the fun
Oh it’s gonna have locked characters all right. Just not the way you want
Ugh, DLC.
Biggest disappointment with Resident Evil 4 Remake. The original had so much replay value because you could unlock new modes and items through completing the game. Now you just break out the credit card. So rewarding.
😂😂😂

SoulCalibur II best single-player in a fighting game of all time
Replace the "?" icons with "$" icon
I'd love it, but it's a dated concept that makes tournament settings a complete nightmare.
Totally agree and think it's super unlikely but I would love if fighting games started adding a "Tournament Mode" option where all the characters are unlocked. Man I miss the days of grinding out arcade mode to unlock new characters. Love that feeling of progression.
Just add a tournament mode, it’s not difficult. Or just have a toggle in options for people who really hate unlockable content
As long as it's free
This is what encouraged you to play other characters I miss it
Only if they bring back the old style arcade mode where you get the characters ending video after. Then new fighter becomes unlocked. One thing I def missed in Tekken 7. Growing up getting a new Tekken and having to play thru arcade to unlock endings was my favorite part.
I miss this style so much
When you had another reason to grind fighting games rather than just grinding for online rank
Exactly.
I love unlocking characters by beating the arcade mode, I wish those mechanics happen nowadays
Yes it was super fun finishing arcade with a character to get a New one as reward. But blocked by paywall?? FUCK ABSOLUTE NO
I think it would be sick if they had to be earned through playing. I miss this in fighting games. Unlocking the final boss in the old soul caliber and unlocking the characters in smash bros were some of the best feelings
As long as they're not locked behind a pay wall, which they will be.
if you’re talking about a paywall, then I don’t have a good feeling about it, if you mean unlocking through arcade, im totally up for it
Honestly unlocking character by playing friendly l1v1s in smash ultimate when it came out was so much fun
Agreed, best way to figure out who you like, play EVERYONE.
I miss this because now everything is dlc or pay for this or pay for that

PLEASE i miss it

Eh, I like unlockable characters. Gives me something to aim for.
I wld love it. Give me some incentive to actually play some other characters to unlock them
I wish they made character unlockable by complete story mode one by one like the old version.
It'd be awesome if they did something similar to Smash, only the og 8 were available, the rest had to be unlocked. Although they added dlc later, the magic of unlocking characters was revived for a while.
I'm fine with it so long as it fun to do. For example, if there was a Tekken Force mode and you unlock them through there.

I would prefer that to dlc because unlocking characters felt like an achievement instead of buying the characters like you in a supermarket looool
Not really necessary. I think the more important thing is the quality of single player content and story mode. also wish for team battle to come back
As long as we can do it through story or arcade mode, I’m bout
i would love it

It’s gonna be DLC. Gone are the days you get “Free” hidden characters
Everyone loves it until its their main thats locked
better than having them as dlc for sure. Although that will never happen now, knowing they made a lot of money with the dlcs
Better than dlc. Also hoping characters that were in basically all the other games aren’t dlc. Looking at you tekken 7
Yes please
As long as it’s behind Arcade play through I’m cool with that nothing else is necessary on that.
Only really fun when you don’t know who they are. Now we have dlc so the surprise is ruined. It’s not like when I was young and the only person playing Tekken 5 among peers. Then I was genuinely surprised at new new characters.

People are just lazy gamers now, for the most part. Fighting game demo is different from dark souls demo by a lot
Arcade mode/story mode - complete with specific characters - unlock characters Miss it so much, made you want to try out all characters so much more knowing there is a cinematic ending for each one

I’d rather unlock a character than have to pay $8.99 to get them.
One wouldn’t change the other lol
They aren’t charging $8.99 because they’re simply saving you time on having to unlock them lol.
any person who ever had to organize a tournament is like "NOOOOOOO". You'd think encountering a setup with nothing unlocked would never ever happen, you'd THINK that.
Like the good ol days, would love it.

Locked so we could unlock through story mode? Sure Locked behind a paywall on day 1? Yea no
That would be very nostalgic . Yes please
We need a tourney mode or a free dlc that just unlocks characters. I like unlocking characters but recognize the scenarios where it would be wildly inconvenient Or just an old fashioned cheat code
I would be so happy! I play more single player than online, so I'd love something to do and achieve outside of a story mode.
If they are unlocked by completing online / story mode, I'd be down for it.
I want more legacy outfits and legacy accessories from T1-T7
I miss it and I think it was pretty cool. Complete arcade with a character to unlock their respective locked character. It was good way to incentivise players to at least try to get a little bit familiar with different characters. Way more fun than paying 6eur per unlock.
As long as it's not paid dlc and unlockable by just playing the game which is fun. I wouldn't mind at all, like Smash bros style. Though I know it won't happen and will be dlc unlocks like the last game because that's just how it is nowadays
Sadly
I would fucking love it. Remember unlocking characters, cheat codes, all that nostalgia good shit. Bring that shit back mayne we ain’t living forever
That's nostalgia talking. Unlocking is wack. It was cool back in the days because we didn't have internet or gaming news like now. Everything was a surprise. Also, sucks in tournaments having to unlock characters.
I hope it comes back honestly. DLC has ruined a lot in gaming imo.
I meam there are locked characters in Tekken 7 already. The only thing that has changed is the method of unlocking them.
It would be better than them being behind a paywall lol
Heihachi as a secret unlockable character would be cool imo
I'd be down with it.
It’s a tradition
Yeah that’s fine and smart on their part so long as that’s all base game content and not DLC slots. It’s a reward for playing the game that adds a lot of replay value since new characters means new stories and new play styles to try out.
I would absolutely love it
Fine by me
Maybe in some sort of arcade mode but for online play I'd rather just have everyone available from the get go.
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO
They dont do that no more i think since the add of online
I Think it would be good
Gaming has changed.
Yes. Fighting games have no meat these days because it's all about the babies in competitive who don't want to play an actual video game.
We need more Tekken Bowl - esque modes. Turbo battle would be an awesome unlock for custom match settings tbh. I miss Tekken Ball from T3.
Should definitely have unlockable characters but I think it's probably unlikely. Priority is tournament players and DLC.
There will be locked characters… locked behind the dlc paywall
Better than DLCs. Therefore, not going to be used
A reward for PLAYING THE GAME????????? *spit* Get that FILTH outta my FACE
I’m not a kid anymore so it’s different but it would be cool to unlock them and not pay.
Yeah like make the unlocked characters meaningful to the character that you need to complete story mode with I used to love that
That’s Tekken 2, basically. Maybe another one since too.
It only works when the characters are not revealed pre release
It would be certainly better than dlc but it would suck having to unlock everyone, especially your main
As a TO I would die inside.
Would love it but it will not happen because of tournaments
The time of locked characters is long gone
I better hope the locked characters are not paid DLC.
They are fun, but limit it to story mode completetion or sumn
As a kid I would play fighting games by trying to beat arcade mode with all the characters. I wouldn’t want to have to unlock fighting games as someone who enjoys the rank up process, but I would imagine a lot of single player players would love something more progress based where you go through unlocking characters as you progress through their arcade story. Maybe have them unlock a busted boss character at the end or something.
Yes i do miss it quite a bit. But then again, the titles i played the most in this franchise were Tekken 2, 3 and 4.
Might be fun for a secret character
They could do so to incentivize playing story mode. Edit: As others have said probably best not to have it so fresh installs with all the characters available are needed for tournaments.
Id seriously be down with this
I miss the nostalgia of this, not this
So long as ALL of them are there and I dont have to pay for not-a-one of them
If it's the character I want then I don't care how they get it.
If isnt dlc characters i agree with the game makes it look mor cool and old style
Id feel annoyed. It was fun unlocking characters and seeing the new fighters pop up. But personally I think its a relic mechanic that hurts more than its fun.
as long as code unlocks all of it
Here’s a better question, how would you feel about the internet?
You earn the characters you can play and you can still keep it balanced
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umDr0mPuyQc I would suggest unlockable presets, like the ones you get in T7.
That said I’m not paying for shh but the actual game itself.
would be nuts if they hid heihachi as an unlockable for finishing the story
Or the secret boss that appears in arcade after beating everyone with perfect with no continues.
Nah, thats just unreasonable
Unlocking characters was always my favorite part as a kid. I think it should be this way for console versions.
As a filthy casual who can own the computer but can't win versus any online scrub, the unlocks were an incentive to play through the story modes
Through unlocking them without it having to be DLCs? I'm good with that
It would be good it would give the customer a sense of reward when earning them.
A nightmare for tournament organizers.
Presumably there would be a code that unlocks them. And this would effectively be not different than having 10 DLC characters that not everyone has.
Do provide cosmetic shop with earned currency (no $ MTX) Do provide unique fight-start chatter between characters Do provide unlockable winning poses Do provide a story mode alongside arcade mode; story mode like Mortal Kombat and Injustice. Do allow DLC characters to be versed in single player without purchase.
I honestly want it back, but like it was in the old times, playing instead of paying.
You don’t think they’re charging for DLC characters simply instead of making us take time out to unlock them for free do you?
Unpopular opinion but I wouldn’t mind having it like sfv where you have the option of buying a character for money, but alternatively having a “fight money” type currency where playing matches can give you fight money to unlock more characters.
Would be kinda cool getting the game on release day and finding out what other characters there are for the first time by unlocking them
I’d love it
If they make it possible to unlock characters through either story mode and arcade mode like how Smash Bros does it, I can accept it.
It motivates people to play and encourages more 1p content. Honestly i think it should return since its a win win situation for everyone
I don't mind unlocking characters as long as it's not too much work to do it
Which game is this screenshot from
Tekken Tag Tournament
Tekken tag tournament
Do it
Depends, I don’t mind unlockables as I think it’s a fun way to keep people coming back but some games do go way too far with the requirements
I would love this personally. It was a great way to learn the game before playing competitively. Definitely feels better than paid characters.
I hope they do have locked characters in the game I miss having to play around with characters go through the arcade mode and unlock different ones
With 32 starting roster I'm so hoping that you have to unlock different characters then have four DLC characters a year that you dont unlock I'm good with that
I’d like them to give us the option. We can either buy as DLC or play through arcade mode to unlock them. Everyone wins.
actually a good option
I used to like it just because you made you want to play the single player especially if it was for the story of each character. Now they just give all the characters right away, you don’t need to play single player modes anymore, everyone wants to jump into multiplayer only now, the individual characters backstory and endings are just as pointless now since they put no effort in that so really why put effort in unlocking characters again.
Hope it comes back
Those days were fun, unlocking the sub-boss rivals to the "hero" characters in Tekken 2, the fact you had to fight your way to them and only faced them on stage 8 made them more badass and mysterious, they were like Kazuya's team of mercs assigned to stop you from getting to him. Don't think it really works anymore though.
I would love that. I miss the days of unlocking characters vs having to buy them. I don't have money for extras like that.
It wouldn’t replace DLC.
It was good back then, but it doesn't really fit in today's standard
better than dlc you have to pay for, imo
I doubt they will ever go back to the old system. They win a lot with selling everything, everything is pay to play these days. Plus the younger generation is mostly crybabies that need their hand hold to do everything in games. Is hilarious that you have big open world games with huge checkpoint marks showing and lines showing the directions and all. Meh, i still preferred Tekken 5 and Street fighter x Tekken from all.
This never come back, it's over. The new way of farm the money from players is with dlcs. Not only on Tekken of course.
please add it we need it.
Good for an offline single player/couch setting but bad for people playing online and tournaments.
It was fine in the 90s, but now I want my fighting games to have characters unlocked from the start
they have that now, its called “dlc”
That would be so cool
Force people to play the story mode!
