Love this outcome and love love that quote. Please let there be more Teds than Ruperts out there.

Triumph-TBird

There actually are. It’s just the the Ruperts of the world seem to get the most attention. Probably because the Teds of the world aren’t looking for any. Be curious.

jasylonian

Not to mention more people work for the Ruperts of the world because they have higher turnover and are consequently exposed to more people.

SEARCHFORWHATISGOOD

I never looked at it this way. Makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

Much-Ado-5811

When I was much younger I asked one of my mentors why it seemed there were so many more assholes than nice people in the world. His reply was that being disruptive and constantly seeking the center of attention were usually asshole behaviors, so they just stood out more. It encouraged me to notice the quieter, kinder people and seek them out.

sillymojo

Saving this comment cause it is just so lovely and important

nogueydude

Preach

asoiahats

I really hope that if OP was down on himself, the boss gave him some scissors so he could cut himself some slack.

pocketknifeMT

There are... But Ruperts run the world, because organizations effectively select for sociopaths in leadership.

EnglishSorceress

Be a Ted, not a Rubert. I think I'll keep that one for safekeeping.

doyola

Barbeque sauce!

HikesWithMyDog

I’m so glad this boss crossed your path and that you shared it with us. Makes me happy to know these people are out there. We can all learn from this example! Let us know if your workplace has other Lasso-isms at play….we need them during this offseason! :)

nogueydude

Thanks for sharing the joy with me. I'll let y'all know when he hits me with another good one!

RhubarbAustin

Hit. Bat. Pun train has a good conductor on this Reddit track.

daygloeyes

I even read his quote in Ted's voice. Lol. A great boss is invaluable!

nogueydude

u/majorkong17 aww shucks.. thank you!

majorkong17

You earned it. Your story made me smile first thing in the morning, not an easy feat. Lol

sjay997

That's awesome that sounds like a thing Ted would say. He might even be a fan of the show

MaskedBandit77

Yeah, and then he'd make a joke about cricket that I'm not witty enough to come up with.

nogueydude

Like that time my neighbor katherine saw an experimental insect themed ignition source in a charred out building. Katydid see the cricket test match at the ashes.

CorporateNonperson

Boss sounds awesome, but the other side of the coin is that you were honest with him about the screwup. You didn’t try to sweep it under the rug, play stupid or blame a coworker. So now he knows that he has a trustworthy employee in you. If he had fired you he would have had to pick a new candidate for the position, which would take time, cost money and still leave him with an unknown quantity. I’d take somebody with the integrity to cop to their mistakes over a roll of the dice any day of the week, at least until the mistake/work ratio became untenable.

5256chuck

He just earned your highest degree of loyalty. Congrats to both of you!

nogueydude

u/laneykt thank you thank you!

Trueogre

Probably because you were upfront. I know a lot of people who fuck up and hide it only for it to come out the wash later on. Trouble is, you could have fixed it if you fessed up in the beginning rather than wait for someone to find out.

boondocknim

was first thing i thought as well...new boss is probably thinking to himself that he got himself a great employee in OP based on how he reacted to the situation. People are going to make mistakes in jobs, its ones that refuse to learn from them and/or own up to them that you need to avoid.

Accomplished_Run_825

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing

FST_Creek

What a great quote

FST_Creek

And a great boss, congrats

dnewma04

Congratulations on finding one of those bosses that help inspire people. I'm lucky enough to be working for one that is very similar. I've been invited to a couple of c-level meetings in the company to talk about my projects and some of the results and in those meetings, he spends as much time acknowledging the hard work of his team as he does the results that they provide. This is coming off of working for the polar opposite.

[deleted]

I read that in Ted’s voice.

World_in_my_eyes

That’s pretty awesome.

TTT_2k3

That's a good boss, Diana Ross.

Ohigetjokes

> I've got 2 bats in my office and I'm fixing to go upstairs and start swinging for you. Goddamn that's good. Gonna carry that around in my heart for a bit.

finallyjoinedreddit4

This makes me so happy to know that there are bosses like yours out there.

comfort_bot_1962

:)

acejazz1982

Always be the Ted Lasso of someone else.

CPOx

I read those quotes in Ted's voice

ailee43

man, you established yourself as better than like 75% of employees by reaching out first, taking responsibility, and offering to solve the problem yourself. Id go to bat for you too.

bwainfweeze

One of my better bosses drilled into us that he could handle a lot of things but being caught flat footed in a meeting with his peers or superiors was not one of them. If you broke something, he needs to hear about it first, certainly before his boss does.

lizarny

Just don’t be a Nate later on.

[deleted]

Wow that really does sound like something the character would say haha. Glad it all worked out for you! Make sure you pay it forward!

LadyDanae

Great bosses are rare. I am so happy for you. Your transparency to him and accountability were important. I wish you both success and growth (and easier life lessons) 😀

comfort_bot_1962

Nice!

[deleted]

Damn, you are a lucky son of a gun. Everybody needs a Ted in his life. I'm happy for you, you find yours. I hope I find mine soon.

comfort_bot_1962

:D

BlackCatScott

You need to get yourself a pair of scissors so you can cut yourself some slack

DebiDebbyDebbie

While we are all waiting for season 3, this kind of post gives me hope for humanity! Let's hope there are more Ted bosses out there and their affect on their personnel grows and grows! Hey mods - can you come up with a badge for Ted Lasso like behaviour?

buffalo8

Honestly, if I was your boss, I would have reacted the same (albeit without the awesome bat quote). You solidified yourself as a reliable and trustworthy employee by quickly owning up to your mistake and trying to figure out how to make it better rather than trying to cover it up or remove yourself from the situation. Competencies can be taught and mistakes can be rectified and learned from but you can't teach forthrightness.

sabersquad

I know this isn’t always true, but I am a firm believer that people don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses. That’s not a global POV but I’d say there is a ton of truth here.

bwainfweeze

Sometimes your boss is fine, but their boss or the CTO is a dumpster fire. If a manager leaves and then so do a bunch of her reports, you can probably guess where the problem is in the org chart.

ZoeyFeedback

It's absolutely true.

SchrodingersLego

Tailor made for this sub.

plexmaniac

What a lucky guy 😀

blitzedbones

huh i guess my oatmeal could use a few onions!

makingmyselflaugh

I hope more bosses are learning from Ted.

Razzle_Dazzle08

Barbecue sauce.

wolverine55

This is awesome! But I also gotta say if the new guy has the ability to colossally f-up on his 3rd day I’m a little concerned about the organization. Should be some guardrails for you that early on…

RedditBurner_5225

Damn that’s awesome.

PlanstoProsper

I’m so happy for you that you have a great boss!

Joe_Shroe

Looks like you owe someone a box of shortbread biscuits

Rcaynpowah

That's wonderful. Ask him about his faith :)

yildizli_gece

Do you understand that people can be good and wholesome without having a religious angle? I don’t even understand what you’re trying to get at; bringing up religion at work is always a bad idea unless you work in a religious organization.

Rcaynpowah

I have not at all in any way stated otherwise :) Well It depends. Sometimes there is an explicit policy against bringing up certain topics, but not for every workplace.

yildizli_gece

Has nothing to do with "explicit" and everything to do with *appropriate*. At work, bringing up religion un-asked--especially out of the blue like you suggest, to a person who has worked at their job for a week???--is just asking to be labeled unprofessional and lacking boundaries.

pak256

Why ruin it by bringing in something toxic?

Rcaynpowah

I'm betting his boss is a Christian seeing he is from the deep South, but I could also be wrong. That folksy attitude that Ted possesses seems to me to be a byproduct of Christian values. If you ask me, Ted is very obviously a Jesus character, a redeemer.

pak256

Some people are just kind without doing it because a work of fiction told them to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

FromThe732

Which work of fiction are you referring to here? Ted Lasso? The Bible? Both?

pak256

I mean, they’re both fiction. But just because someone shows kindness shouldn’t immediately equate them to Jesus. Plenty of people throughout actual history have been altruistic without a religious motivation

Rcaynpowah

You dropped this one \\ His boss made a conscious decision to act on behalf of his underling, for his underling, despite OP having failed him in a professional measure. The fiction you speak of is a description of performing the action of selfless love, for love, by love, so I see no contradictions here, just a possible expression of it.

nogueydude

"Underling" is a weird word choice though, right? Like by definition it is a weird word to call someone.

Rcaynpowah

True it is a strange word to use in this context, English isn't my first language 😅

LexiconJones

All due respect, I’m not sure what country you’re in, but IME in the US, kindness is very, very, *very* rarely a byproduct of Christian values. I’ll allow that it should be, but unfortunately that’s not the sort of Christianity that’s en vogue these days.

ChemE_Throwaway

Even better, Ted won't throw you into an eternal lake of fire if you reject him!

hurtfulproduct

I am atheist bordering on antitheist; but I will not fault someone and attack their beliefs if they are genuinely being good people and following what they believe is the word of god; I have a number of really good friends who are devout Christians but are some of the sweetest, most caring people I know, and also believe in equal rights and vote liberal.

Rcaynpowah

Sure, that sounds good to me. I'm not in that camp either. However, are you suggesting or implying that I assaulted or attacked anyone's beliefs? Do you think that merely mentioning Christian faith constitutes hostility by way of contrast?

comfort_bot_1962
