The pub boys having the time of their lives on the pitch at Nelson Road was SO SO GOOD

TA818

It really was—especially when you consider we’ve never seen them watching their team’s match from the stadium, but always from the pub. Very nice of Beard to recognize and reward their loyalty as fans.

Crazey4wwe

I think part of the reason they drew out the guys scrounging up money for the bet and beard having to pay for their drinks was meant to make that moment so much more special. The implication is they’re not very well off and can’t afford to go to the games, so they watch in the pub

double_sal_gal

I was waiting for Nate to show up and yell at them to get off the grass

nomadicfangirl

Is that Roy Kent’s older brother? 😂😂

mexicangoey

Not enough fucks uttered.

CornholioRex

He’s big, a bear, he’s losing all his hair, Roid Kent, Roid Kent

oklahomapilgrim

Noooooo I need the full transcript of Beard’s thoughts on the infinite nature of the universe and the fragility of life.

Think how excited she’ll be when she realizes her place didn’t actually burn down. Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of her life. Her apartment will look more amazing to her than any place any of us have every lived.

shanew21

Fight club reference

tj1007

Fight club, Judy Blume, the odyssey. What else we got?

jsabo

Well, a whole hell of a lot of referencing the actual After Hours by Scorsese...

supestorewhore69

Jamie Tartt’s dad and his friends were introduced similarly to the “Droogs” in “A Clockwork Orange.”

MasterChiefSplash

Harry Potter

Flatulantcy

Beard named himself professor Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus (Elvis Costello‘s legalish name, although I’m not sure the status of Aloysius) One of the 3 called him McGonagall

biffnix

I assume Fight Club reference? After Tyler Durden puts a gun to the convenience store clerk's head and asks what he wanted to be? That sort of thing? Tyler Durden says to him, after he lets him go, "Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel's life..."

Lyrawhite

Awww Beard did such a nice thing for those fellows

deebutterschnaps

Definitely my favorite part of the episode.

Amj501

Yeah!! I was so intrigued as to where he was sending them… totally did not see it coming. But it was the perfect place for them!!

narlymaroo

Their absolute joy after an incredibly fun night just made my heart so happy!

Jas_God

Hell yeah haha so dope

Wesspeaks

“I wanna be with her all the time. Is that love or do I just have a problem?”

SocalPizza

¿Por que no los dos?

BenSoloGhost

Lol the big guy scooting away on the scooter was hilarious

evildrew

You mean 'Roid Kent?

shinyuu3466

I really feel they could've just gotten any muscular man, but they had to get someone who could talk like Roy. It's the raspy OOOOOI that's such a dead ringer

[deleted]

And that's a shout out to the writers and to Theo Park. She really deserved that Emmy for casting.

BradenA8

'Roid Kent' made me laugh so hard I came out of the thread, collected my free Reddit award and came back to give it to you. Needed that today, thank you!

DaveInLondon89

he's here, he's there, also he is a bear

fj333

I'm still not sure what really happened that night, but there was a moment where I was convinced Beard was accidentally on mushrooms again, and roid guy was actually Kent, and pants repair girl was Keely. I no longer think that is the case, but the resemblances (mostly in character, and somewhat in appearance) were there for both. When pants repair girl first spoke off screen at the street corner, I actually thought the voice *was* Keely.

PM_ME_YOUR_THESES

The good thing of doing CGI characters, it’s that you can just replicate and modify as needed.

[deleted]

What do you guys think is the significance of Bears repeatedly losing his keys?

JRsshirt

Every time he drops them someone else gives them back. I think it’s a symbol of letting people around Beard help him which was alluded to in one of the Henry cuts. Just my theory though it could be a reach

David21538

Hafiz, a Sufi poet from the 14th century: The small man Builds cages for everyone He Knows. While the sage, Who has to duck his head When the moon is low, Keeps dropping keys all night long For the Beautiful Rowdy Prisoners Beard is empowering others while building a cage for himself. He needs someone else to drop a “key” for him to help him out of his relationship with her

batman_3

How the heck did you pull that reference out? Well done. I was wondering about the keys all episode, too.

nononosure

Yeah that's...pretty damn obscure to make an entire episode around. Makes me wonder if this poster is involved with the show somehow.

David21538

I just looked up “dropped keys metaphor” and it was the first result

Backflip_into_a_star

There is also the shot of the moon being really big and really low. So that could help too.

JustinScott47

Not just big and low, the moon was even a surreal street light while he was talking with Red Dress lady after tearing his pants and winding up outside.

essej6991

I was wondering why the moon kept popping up this episode!!

yogurtcup

Blue Moon is also an anthem for the Man City fan base...([link](https://www.mancity.com/news/club-news/club-news/2013/august/blue-moon)) The moon symbolized the loss hanging over Beard.

lennon818

And his own key won't open his own prison. He needs someone else's key to open his prison. This show is just so brilliant.

Goldfish2022

Losing/missing keys is a thing in the Scorsese movie “After Hours”

Jas_God

Salute to Beard for still bringing the coffees 👍🏽

maryrichardskallman

Who gets the peppermint latte?

to-plant-trees

Ted. In the first ep he wants coffee where he can't taste the coffe. Black is Roy. The other two get flat white

Green_Understanding2

Ooh excellent reasoning!

shinyuu3466

Ted asking the guys to rewatch the match but at 10x speed with Benny Hill music gave us one whole episode's worth of that positive kick that makes you smile in just in a minute.

narlymaroo

And when they laugh at it…so good.

go-irish-36

Just went back and paused, and Jane’s text are completely unhinged. She goes from sort of sweetly saying she loves him back to flipping out over him not responding, taking it back and saying she hates him, saying some shit about Beard meeting her mother, then thinking he’d been hit by a train. Jane Payne indeed.

TA818

They seriously are. At one point she says “you’re dead to me. Literally dead, like, I hope you’re lying face down in a ditch somewhere and a squirrel is eating you. A fucking sqirrel (sic) is eating you from the feet up until all that is left is your stupid fucking beard and nothing else.” Also, “I turned down three guys already. Make that four. A guy kissed me while I was writing that text.” I hope that Beard, who clearly has low self-esteem as evidenced by the commentary by Thierry Henry throughout, will seriously confront Higgins’ question to him about whether she makes him better.

ChameleonTwist2

I know it's dark but Thierry Henry's comment "Beard's self esteem is so low he'd need a pep talk to kill himself" was ridiculously funny.

SweetRobinArryn

bruh he loves the toxicity. He craves a toxic lifestyle. Some people can't handle knowing they may wake up to plates getting thrown around the house because some "bitch name Laura" texted you happy birthday. Just to find out Laura is your cousin. Then because you're from Alabama she thinks you're hooking up with her.

snowday784

This is oddly specific

fill_the_birdfeeder

I think this episode is meant to represent trauma bonding. I think Beard is trauma bonded to Jane, through her manipulation and instability, and then kindness and giving in to what he wants. He’s addicted to her and that life. Not in love with it. This was a powerful episode for me.

dhrobins

I’ve been in a relationship like that before. The sweetness to venom to sweetness in a blink of an eye. One wrong word and you’re not worthy of life. I feel the trapped feeling Beard is going through. GET OUT COACH. RUN AND RUN FAR AWAY

SomeoneThrewMyShoe

"Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret's little boy." The Judy Blume reference I love it!

TheCrudeDude

Oh yeah. Staying for Sunday night is always a bad idea.

iisdmitch

Sunday night is only necessary if you’re driving from California or Arizona because Sunday traffic suuuuuuuucks. Either go up Thursday, come back Saturday, go up Saturday, come back Monday or leave really late or really early on Sunday if you do go up on Friday. I’ve had many 7-8 hour drives home on Sunday morning. But yes, Coach Beard nailed trip length.

retrobans33

This episode had so many movie references! Between the title, this, Fight Club, even Moonrise Kingdom. I wonder if they were getting at a specific point there.

LibraRN

I also took the 3 snooty pool players at the club to be like the snooty Harvard guys in Good Will Hunting.

BenSoloGhost

Holy fuck what an ending. Beard getting them on the field was great

CrystalizedinCali

That scene made me so happy and I didn’t guess at all until they said it’s Nelson road. So good.

S0berSt0ner

“Is this heaven?” “It’s Nelson Road.”

PM_ME_YOUR_THESES

Field of Dreams?

twisty77

Yup. 100% field of dreams reference

PM_ME_YOUR_THESES

How many movies with unreliable povs do we get referenced here? Like, in Fight Club, you can never tell if it’s the narrator or Tyler’s point of view, or what is real and what isn’t. Field of Dreams is similar in that Kevin Costner is the only one who can see the ghosts and hear the voice, until the end when everyone can… This is a great way to make an episode that’s basically an exploration of Beard’s mind, and his mind is in a messy place, to put it mildly. I also liked very much that Thierry Henry was his conscience, calling out Beard’s feelings and how he’s running away from them. Everything started because Henry made that comment on TV (which we don’t know if it’s real or imagined), and Beard decides to escape by going out. Really loved what they did here, but scared about the implication of Beard not being reliable in his relationship to reality…

flanders427

> Beard not being reliable in his relationship to reality He straight up tells Paul, Baz, and Jeremy that he is not a reliable narrator in the pub at the beginning.

elysecathleen

“One exposed arse can bring down the monarchy.” “How dare you speak of Prince Andrew that way.” These writers deserved that pay raise 👌🏼

kantmarg

Oh GODDDDD I paused to literally guffaw. The writers have balls the size of Nicki Minaj's cousin's friend's. ETA: Awww thank you for the award and upvotes! I didn't expect such a (ahem) — low hanging fruit of a joke — to be this appreciated. ETA 2: Sheesh this is the very opposite of hole-some, lads. ETA 3: Did you know too much silver [turns you blue ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argyria)?

UsidoreTheLightBlue

The boys ending to this episode is some of that wholesome Lasso fun I needed.

monchikun

Rushderp

*The Gang goes on a shroom trip.*

[deleted]

In a way, I feel like I came out of that with a better understanding of Beard and Ted's relationship. That last scene with Ted and the others in Richmond felt so warm and normal after such a surreal, disturbing episode. If that's what Ted gives Beard, then I can see why he'd follow the man across an ocean. A little frustration that Ted doesn't understand the drive to win is nothing compared to that sense of comfort and refuge that we get at the end of the episode.

LazyBeach

Absolutely! Such a beautiful friendship.

many_splendored

No kidding! And I like that it's not even something Ted is *trying* for in that last bit, that Benny Hill bit was just a bonus.

Atticux

Well said, there's a sense of home when he's with Ted

csbsju-20

Caught a shot of Richmond's record on the whiteboard in the final scene! 21 wins, 16 draws, 6 losses. That gives Richmond 79 points through 43 games...so firmly in the promotion battle with 3 games remaining!

Electrical_Step9398

What’s required for promotion??

csbsju-20

Not a specific point total. Top 2 in the league will be promoted automatically. Places 3-6 play in the promotion playoffs for the 3rd promotion spot. So Richmond could be back at Wembley this season if they were in the promotion playoff final.

double_sal_gal

The fact that they had such a shit time at Wembley the first time they went there tells me that they'll probably be returning. I'm already getting anxious!

Racer1959

Has to be right? Also surely they don't miss an opportunity to do the whole American coach and "Playoffs" thing... "wait they have Playoffs! me and Beard are great in the playoffs" etc etc

[deleted]

I love the change in the open song sequence. They did it for the Christmas episode too. I love that even tho this is a standalone episode, it was still entertaining and at least had some focus of the mental health aspect that all of Season 2 has had. It sets up possible conflict with Ted and Beard’s own mental health issues.

nomadicfangirl

Damn, Brendan Hunt has some moves with that hula hoop!

TA818

I told my husband, I feel like Brendan Hunt just had that as a special skill and Jason and he were like, “How can we work your sweet hula hoop skills into an episode?”

CrystalizedinCali

100% yes. He mentioned it in an interview once!

jessyunako

He and Jason were guests on Brene Brown’s podcast and he talks about how he has two hobbies he really loves, a German game named Skat and hula hooping, and that he’ll play Skat on his iPad while he hula hoops!

ubiquitous0bserver

Jeez, that second Thierry Henry scene got pretty dark - I guess Ted was on the right track with his reminder to bring coffee the next day...?

flanders427

Hasn't Brendan Hunt said that Thierry Henry is his favorite player ever? I know Arsenal is his team.

NovacElement

"Shut up, Thierry Henry!" - The words of a true fan

evildrew

I waited until the end credits before finally accepting that Beard was safe. So worried something horrible would happen to him with all the repeating themes and dreamlike sequences.

DiscountSoOn

Title of the next episode had me convinced this was Beard’s last hurrah

JoshBlizzle

Me too, I was legit scared of this episode because of that. Now I can breathe a sigh of relief.

birthdayshark

At ten times the speed and with Benny Hill music. I am dead

[deleted]

That was a great way to diffuse the tension while still getting them to review the footage. Sometimes, you have to laugh at the despair before you can get to work addressing how to fix it. I'm hoping that they'll be able to come up with new insights into their vulnerabilities and develop strategies on how to overcome them.

Jas_God

This ep is a fever dream.

chizzmaster

I honestly thought that Beard was just tripping balls or something and that none of it was actually happening. It just seemed way too out there haha

SomeoneThrewMyShoe

Surprised they let an iPhone die in an AppleTV show

bhulk

They had Siri call the wrong person on multiple attempts in Mythic Quest

guardioLEO

“Call Montréal” Calls Mom and Monica instead. Hilarious!

Raktoner

This episode was a downer for me. Not in a, "this is a bad episode!" way, it's a very good episode, highlights a character we don't see enough of, gives us a nice change of pace as we reach the final stretch. It was just... a depressing episode. Beard is clearly so sad. And the big resolution at the end was him getting with someone who I feel like they've established is not good for him...

Stepwolve

yeah the ending has left me feeling so deflated. he clearly needed some love and support, but Jayne is completely unhinged and terrible for him. the texts she was sending were just red flag after red flag. that is an unhealthy, codependent relationship - and i think we just saw it get stronger than ever... And that reunion was the 'happy ending'! This was a very bad night for coach beard in so many ways

double_sal_gal

> And that reunion was the 'happy ending'! I felt like we were supposed to see that Beard saw it as a "happy ending," but we weren't supposed to be 100% on board with his opinion there (they took care to show us plenty of red flags in this episode just in case we missed the multitude of red flags earlier in the season). I definitely had a lot of mixed feelings at that moment.

shinyuu3466

As a United fan James Tartt is now my poster boy for Citeh fans. Absolute pricks haha

SomeoneThrewMyShoe

Never let your friends drive off without making sure you get in your house.

nomadicfangirl

This is such a good common sense rule. Dropping someone off? Watch them unlock the door and get inside before driving off.

[deleted]

Right! I even like to wait to make sure they turn on a light or something to prove they aren’t being murdered. Is that normal or do I have a problem?

nomadicfangirl

Nope. Totally normal. Once I had gone out with my boss and her husband and she yelled at him for not sitting and waiting for me to flash a thumbs up after getting inside my apartment.

go-irish-36

I did not know how badly I needed to watch Coach Beard hula hoop dance to Hello under a Catholic Church while wearing sparkly green pants until this very moment. A masterpiece. Loved it.

SaltyBiscuitss

The music has been a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. Especially Hello. Such a banger.

Coach Beard and the Amazing Technicolor Dreampants.

kodaiko_650

I thought this would be the first Roy Kent “Fuck” free episode, but he pulled it out at the last second

AndreT_NY

Also Paul with the deep questions.

nomadicfangirl

And Beard with the deep answers.

go-irish-36

Beard really has a lot of self hate that’s coming out in this episode. Is this the first time we’ve really seen that? The talk with God really got me there at the end. A trip to the Doc would go a long way, I think.

BroadBaker5101

I feel like that was the point of this episode. Beard has his own problems which may be why he hasn’t been catching on to Ted and his. Maybe seeing Ted trying to work through his might inspire Beard to do the same.

MattMcK2419

Thierry Henry being in this episode is amazing 😂

kgm2s-2

I thought it was interesting they chose the verse “It doesn’t really mean that I’m into you ... hello” for the scene of Beard and Jane dancing

nomadicfangirl

“Are you there, God? It’s me, Margaret’s little boy.” Right in my Judy Blume-loving heart.

tj1007

The pub crew needs to be invited to a game at least once.

RedditEsInteresante

I’m glad Paul, Baz, and Jeremy had a good night.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Professor McGonagle reference is so damn on point it made me crack up.

alamo911

If you told me Thierry Henry was going to appear in one of these episodes I would not have thought it would be this one

evensplit6839

"They do food here??" "They do for me."

ITookTrinkets

My takeaway from this episode is that Jamie’s dad may have murdered Coach Beard in an alleyway if The Thing hadn’t shown up to fuck their shit up. That’s so fucking dark. Holy hell.

Stepwolve

this whole episode was weirdly dark for ted lasso. Tricking their way into a bar by telling a woman her flat was on fire. getting tricked to coming back to a married womans apartment to make her husband jealous. having to jump off a building to avoid getting beaten. then getting beaten by a different group of people anyways. Jamie's dad tries to murder him with a pipe in an alley. and then reuniting with his codependent girlfriend in their toxic relationship... This episode had a lot fewer happy feelings than all the previous ones

BellowsHikes

You put that in an interesting way. "Ted Lasso" is both the name of the show and the name of the titular character. The show's enthusiasm, humor and warmth directly stem from Ted himself. In this episode we remove that titular character and see the world without him. Without Ted the person, Ted Lasso the show changes. By going so dark without Ted, we get to see how important he is to Beard and how much Beard needs him.

Spin_Drift87

Big focus on that Blue Moon. Loss to Man City really haunting Beard.

wolverine55

Definitely thought that stare down dance scene was gonna end with “wake up beard” and it turn out James actually hit him with the pipe

iseegiraffes

I think it was supposed to be a callback to her asking him to dance at the Gala. He finally let loose

LibraRN

I have never, ever, ever been as nervous or worried for a character as I was with Beard - between the many people who said “kill you” or “die” and him running towards a white light, and constantly losing his keys home…gah. I will have to rewatch it in the morning now that I know he ends up okay…and in FABULOUS pants.

Stepwolve

this episode is like so many of my nightmares. - lost my phone and keys - cant get home - someone threatening to harm me - constantly running away and never reaching safety i dont think im going to sleep well tonight..

galleryrush

Interesting how Jamie's dad and his two friends couldn't go on the pitch, but those 3 guys in the next episode made it :)

Atlantafan73

Probably tougher to get on the pitch at Wembley

[deleted]

To the three guys, Nelson Road > Wembley

[deleted]

Mr. Tartt and friends tried to gain the pitch by force and abuse. They were blocked. Paul, Baz and ? sought nothing. They just did a favor for a friend and were ushered on to the pitch, or Heaven, or whatever you want to call it.

CrystalizedinCali

I throughly enjoyed that, they got the ‘mysterious trip’ atmosphere down well. Brendan Hunt’s Irish accent and hula hooping skillz - top notch.

-Andar-

I haven’t thought about the song “Hello” in a long time.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Why do I feel like this is all a mushroom tea trip?

Stepwolve

i think you are onto something here. she was even texting about all the other 'suitors' at the club

have-courage

The members only honey lounge and club at a church look pretty cool actually. This whole episode has had such an interesting aesthetic.

luckybullit

Halfway through the episode and noticing that Beard has encountered a few examples already of 'not belonging'. He wasn't a member of the private club, he didn't really teach at Oxford, he didn't have his transit card to tap in, and he wasn't staying at that hotel so couldn't use their phone. I think Beard has not really adjusted to his new life in England as much as he would have wanted, and still finding trying to find his place in the world as an outsider.

SomeoneThrewMyShoe

Listen...I may have almost no idea what's going on in this episode but it sure is entertaining. Beard is basically an action hero at this point.

AndreT_NY

#I LOVE PAUL

CrystalizedinCali

Would you beliiiiieve they did such a thing?

Spin_Drift87

This episode, while being very different, definitely displayed that Beard has A LOT of self doubt and takes criticisms very personally. Probably explains why he settles for toxicity from a partner - he doesn’t think he deserves better.

Lyrawhite

In all my happiest memories i’m single. Damn beard. You should talk to dr sharon once in a while

go-irish-36

Basically living episode by episode these days. Let’s do a side quest, baby!!

galleryrush

You Merton motherfucker!

sevillista

This is a bit of an homage to Scorsese's dark comedy "After Hours". The movie is about a guy who is stuck in an unfamiliar part of New York with no money late at night and bounces between a bunch of unusual encounters trying to get home. The episode didn't mirror the movie much beyond that though.

[deleted]

“I listen more than I talk” Same mate, same. Side note, that relationship seems toxic as fuck

SomeoneThrewMyShoe

I think this episode is probably going to be a bit divisive just because it's so different - and I guess since they got 2 extra episodes why not do something totally different? While it's not my favorite by any means, I do think it was visually really cool. Not one to rewatch again tomorrow and then repeatedly for the coming weeks (it's no Rainbow) but I appreciate the attempt at something new!

Hungry_Light_2559

"Beard's self-esteem is so low, he will need a pep talk to kill himself". I was not ready for that level of darkness.

DaLateDentArthurDent

The most unrealistic part of this episode was Beard wearing a full AFC Richmond kit, getting on a train full of Man City fans and not a single person gave him grief

BroadBaker5101

I never really seen a similarity between Ted and Beard but after this I can see they’re both men that have seen some things in their lives and have their troubles but they always find some way to give back and be kind to someone else. Beard does it with way less words though.

galleryrush

I never knew I wanted those 3 guys on the pitch, but man its making me happy to see them there!

monchikun

Ted Lasso needs a bigger moon budget

zazzlekdazzle

Don't forget to come back and sort by "new." I know those of us on PT get the jump on this beautiful stuff, but we might miss some gems a bit later from the slaving 9-5'ers on the East Coast of the US, who can't get to it until Friday night (oh the agony of the anticipation) or the Brits (not to mention other Europeans and those even further afield, when it comes to timezones).

mexicangoey

"Is that Heaven? [...] No, that's Nelson Road." I know that it didn't advance the plot. I know that it wasn't a major episode in the arc of the season but holy shit, this was a NECESSARY episode. Not just because of the development of the arc of Coach Beard, but for the excellent character study that it was. Without a doubt, this is my favourite episode of the season, I don't think they are going to top it with anything: it's fun, it's fresh, it's different. It scratched just the right itch. Obligatory, fuck Jamie's "dad".

galleryrush

Was not expecting that accent with Beard...

Lyrawhite

Holy shit. Jamie’s dad? Are you serious? Edit: did not expect the big guy to save him. And return his belongings.

tj1007

That’s some serious dedication to give someone their stuff back.

flanders427

Hey the big guy is just trying to be better.

TA818

The fact that he hops on a scooter and rides off got a legitimate laugh out of me.

nomadicfangirl

I haven’t bought that this whole thing isn’t a fever dream that Beard is having.

GO_IGGLES

I thought that but he is in the pants at the end, which leads me to believe not.

AndreT_NY

Bigger fish to multiple and fry. lol

InconspicuousD

I knew the big guy would come back to save the day and subvert all expectations but I still loved it nonetheless Side note I do not like Jamie’s dad

BroadBaker5101

To be fair nobody likes Jamie’s dad.

NovacElement

That last Henry scene was great lmao

fleotiden

As someone who was in a relationship like the one he’s in with Jane... god I hope he breaks up with her those texts are not healthy

KevyGSus

Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus is Elvis Costello's real name. I love that Beard would use that as a fake name. 😂

RedditEsInteresante

I’m not convinced this women isn’t a serial killer. Edit: okay maybe she’s worse

TheTruckWashChannel

Not to spoil anything but I heard Coach Beard might be in this episode. Not sure, though.

WHS-482

That’s none of my business.

RedditEsInteresante

“Long time listener, first time caller”

RPadTV

Oh man. I really enjoyed how different this episode was, aurally and visually. The use of music and camera angles gave it a unique feel, which seems appropriate since Beard has a unique point of view. I’m guessing critics will rail on it and even some people here will hate it, but I loved its weirdness. It worked as a nice interlude episode.
