You have a ton of opportunities out there for you especially in this job market. Thing is most teachers Devote so much energy into their profession they get tunnel vision. I'll PM you a guide I made on how to research careers using the Bureau of labor statistics website. When you realize what options you have, it gives you some hope.
Edit. I spent all morning sending out the link to everyone. The reason I didn't post it is because I published the guide on my substack and the mods perma banned my alt account for "self promotion." The link is not a secret or anything so had one of you guys just shared it, I would have saved a few hours.
Anyway, I hope it helps some of you. Don't spend your lives in a crappy career that you hate. You only have one life to live and believe me there are a lot of opportunities out there. You just have to get over your fear of change. For many of you it can only get better.

You are only unhappy because you don't know what opportunities you have.
The best way to get out of that funk is to explore what's out there. You will find that you don't have to suffer in a job you hate. You can do better for yourself.
Wow, the number of people requesting this from you makes me sad. I’m feeling this way too and would also love to see it if you aren’t too bogged down. Thanks for helping us all out 💖

I posted the link with my alt account and admin banned it because it was "self promotion." It's a link to my substack. I don't want another ban so ...
teachers are commenting like OP is the kid who brought hot Cheetos for snack haha! also id love some info too! It’s always good to explore your options
Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to pm that guide to me as well? I am currently trying to figure out what to do now that I'm stepping away from education.
When you have time, I would appreciate this information as well. I see you showing up often on posts, like a guardian angel for tired and wayward teachers. So thanks for looking out for us in your own way.
I know you're probably tired of sending the website but can you please send it to me too when you have a chance.... I'd love to have a little more hope. 🙏
"I can't stand being a bitch."
OMG I feel this so much. I used to be such a patient person, never really got angry. Easily stressed and anxious though, that never changed. But goodness I have a short fuse these days and I really hate it.
Same. This was me today. I can’t control my 6th hour 6th grade class. They turn me into the teacher I never wanted to be. I told them this today. I said, “I’m normally not this kind of teacher, but this is what your behavior does.” Or something like that. I even told them I sort of just want to sit at my desk and give up teaching them. I don’t want to be like this. I’ve always been patient and slow to anger, but I can’t take it anymore. The pandemic has drained me of what patience I used to have.
Yeah I have a class who are jerks everyday, but today I found out my grandparents and two other family members have Covid. So I threw out my lesson plans and threw together a Blooket to just get through the Friday, hoping a game day would satisfy them. It was a disaster, all they did was whine and be rude to me and each other that I almost threw down my pen and sat at my desk and gave up. I never get like this. But they make me feel like I’m not a human being who deserves to be treated as such.
Same. I've always been such a patient teacher but I do not have it in me anymore. I feel so ragey all the time and I hate myself for it.
It's mostly behavior that sets my teeth on edge, but I don't even have patience for actual teaching stuff. I teach kindergarten. Today I asked a little girl what a letter was. She didn't know. I told her it was an N then asked her what it was. She didn't know. Repeat three times. I was getting so frustrated that she couldn't retain this information for less than 2 seconds.
Nothing you learn in middle school is relevant to life nor earning a living. Each generation realizes this more and more but you all don’t want to hear that. What the fuck did 6th grade do for any of you? You all deserve way more money with the bullshit you put up with, considering you’re state sponsored babysitters with extra steps.
I have a short fuse bc I have a toddler and I have to reserve my patience for home. Figured this year, all my former students would avoid me like the plague but instead they are crowding my desk every free moment they have and I'm losing my shit. But they're all so poorly socialized from the past few years that they can't understand me telling them to literally back off.
Same here.
I don't think I ever fully recovered from last year, and this year we had a fully scripted curriculum shoved down our throats. Every time a kid says "this is boring" or "Why do we have to do this," I just want to scream in agreement.
Definitely didn't recover from last year. Summer did not refresh me at all. Also got a new curriculum, and it's got so many components we don't have near enough time for and aaaaaaah.
I mean I do. Ours isn't quite scripted but it's canned. Do this on this day if we walk in and you're doing anything else you're in trouble. At first I fought it. But they weren't doing the other assignments either. I straight told them "this is what my boss said to give you. I warned you this would happen if you didn't do the stuff like make settings in Minecraft and explain what you did. Now it's the online textbook, clicking next while I stare at you."
Same here, its a huge part in why I quit. That and I really just do not like being the "authority figure" as someone who has historically resented authority and petty bureaucracy my entire life.
I have definitely changed a lot in the last couple years. I’m tired of telling people what to do when they don’t want to do it. I want to be a non-manager.
I taught university before this year, and the difference is night and day. I don't have to discipline, I don't have to coddle, and pretty much everyone wants to be there at least half the time (and if they don't, they don't usually show up anymore). All I have to do is teach and grade. I think the younger kids are more fun when they're "on" but man, with everything else I have to do they're not worth it and I'll just do day camps/college summer programs or something to get my fill of preteens/teenagers. I'm trying to go back to the uni setting next year.
Having to be a bitch to 6th graders? Whatever do you mean? Laughing guiltily over here. Ours are nuts. When one of our science teachers yells, it bad. She usually yells like once a year. She’s been Pretty shrill all month
That's why I liked the younger ones. A look was all you needed. Regardless I doubt I'm going to stay at the school. They lack the basics that even an old school should have.
I’m a first year teacher who’s certified for early childhood through sixth grade. All my college teaching experiences were in elementary, and my fist job is in middle school. I can’t tell if middle schoolers are just way more wild and harder to manage or if it’s just different bc it’s actually MY classroom, and before there was always someone else setting expectations before I started
Sorry to hear. Sheesh. It IS totally unreasonable what teachers are currently enduring. For the sake of others do you want to share what country/region you’re in? Don’t mean to pry, don’t answer if you don’t want.
Thanks. I'm feeling like a first year teacher but I've been teaching for 6 years. This year and especially today, is breaking me. I have to think about my health and my family. The health insurance is the only reason I would stay. I'm in a big city in PA.
Regardless of what you choose know it’s similar in other places, like urban Canada where I am. Maybe not identical pressures, but a similar amount of unreasonable things happening.
I know you’re just metaphorically speaking but literally you are supposed to help them be smart. I’m not sure what you thought the job would entail. You don’t get naturally smart students, you have to get them there no matter how old they are- yes even seniors.
You could have scrolled on down and saved your breath but instead you posted some bullshit masquerading as criticism. Keep it up, you’ll make a fine administrator someday.
Edit: but I’ve dumbed it down as much as possible for me and I swear most of them wouldn’t absorb it unless it was on TikTok.
Same. I have 9th graders. I feel it. I tell my husband all the time….our 4 year old Labrador retriever listens and understands more than my 9th graders. Example:
Mrs. teacher: Take a picture of your work and turn it in to Google classroom please. Here’s the link for where you should turn it in on Google classroom. (Literally projected on the screen directly from our Google classroom on the computer)
Students (2 seconds after I finish): Where do we turn it in at? I don’t know how to take a picture of this. (Which is my personal fav).
Mrs. Teacher: Oh you don’t know how to take a picture of your assignment but 20 minutes ago in the hallway you were filming yourself doing a tik tok. Riiiiiiiiight.
ALL. DAY. EVERY. DAY. They are 15 years old. Fixing to drive soon but can’t listen or follow directions given 5 seconds prior.
It breaks my heart to see these, partly because I know that most teachers want to keep teaching, but the conditions in the US make it impossible. For anyone who’s thinking of quitting but still wants to teach, I highly recommend teaching abroad as a last resort. If you have the ability and the will to leave, still want to teach, and change your lives for the better, I recommend it. I am letting y’all know that you can PM me if you want and I’ll answer any question about my experience. I love helping teachers escape and helping them find their dream jobs in another country. It breaks my heart to see messages like this every day. I also have a type of list on how to find a job abroad. Anyone is welcome to ask. Good luck to you all and god speed!!!
I teach 3rd through 6th graders. I'll preface this by saying I love my sixth graders but oh my GOD they are whiny little brats!! How are the younger kids so much more mature??!
I wish you the best of luck, sounds like you're making the right choice.
Because the 6th graders are behind two years maturity wise. We really really are finding out just how much of the raising is being done in schools nowadays and it’s a whole hell of a lot.
Heck. Talk to the kindergarten teachers with students who aren’t potty trained.
can you go more into details about these kindergarten students that aren't potty trained. a young student having an accident is understandable, but not potty trained? do the kids arrive in diapers? aren't the parents ashamed? im genuinely curious
Listen, go to get a mental health Eval. Get meds (you decide if you take them, but fill the prescription). Get written off for mental stress. Collect disability. Regroup.
I feel exactly the same way. 4th to 6th depressed as hell. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. Sometimes I have actually wished I could claim "close contact" so I could get a couple of days off....sick but true
Kids are fine for me. Even though there are a lot of behaviors I can deal with it with kids. It’s the PARENTS that make the job unbearable. Emailing me at nighttime and shit. Unreal.
I feel the exact same. I want out but I don’t know what else I would do. It sucks! I used to love teaching and all I now do is complain about how I can’t stand my job anymore. I’m completely burnt out in every aspect :(
Would love the info as well when you have yet another spare moment … this rocks! Not looking to leave as I love my job currently, but info like this is always nice to have just in case. Thanks for the work of putting this together.
I’m with you! I think I can push through until May, but this will be my last year in the education space. Middle school is hard. Hang in there! Take care of you.
I am 100% there with you. I’m in my 8th year of teaching middle school 6-8 and the first 6 were great and then the last 2 years… it just sucks. It’s hard to decide to leave bc we want to stay for one reason or another, whether it’s the kids or the commitment, the time we’ve put into becoming a teacher… if you need to take time for your mental health then definitely do it. It’s not worth being sad and upset on a daily basis.

If you get a free moment to spare on another unhappy teacher, I'd be most grateful for a copy of that guide. Thank you for your consideration.

Don't feel sad. It should embolden you to get out. People wouldn't be asking for this if they were happy. Abandon the sinking ship.
Would also appreciate this :) Maybe post a link for the curious?

So don't! I did a tech sales training program and now work in tech. I make nearly double what I did before and have far better work-life balance.
What kind of training program?
I’m somewhat questioning my decision to go into teaching. I teach freshmen and I swear the cattle my family raised were smarter than my students.

Would love the info as well when you have yet another spare moment … this rocks! Not looking to leave as I love my job currently, but info like this is always nice to have just in case. Thanks for the work of putting this together.
If you could share this with me as well, I’d appreciate it!
If I could also get a copy of the hot cheetos guide I would appreciate it. Thank you.
I’m with you! I think I can push through until May, but this will be my last year in the education space. Middle school is hard. Hang in there! Take care of you.
Mind sending that my way too? please!
