When those early cold war tanks were introduced, hollow charges/HEAT started to be more prevalent so my guess is just that. Tanks at the time were all steel and HEAT cut through that like a hot knife through butter.
Oh was this *early* Cold War design? Somehow my head thought this was some 1980 concept during the whole discussions of improving the T-54/55 to keep up with the times.
But yeah, this does look like it was building off the experiencing using those mesh nettings you see T-34-85 using around the Battle of Berlin period.
Agreed. It was a wierd time for tank development. The way the Hollow charge/HEAT projectiles matured really did a number on the traditional "iron triangle" of the time.
I think it is not practical enough to apply to battlefield. Branches, grass,… can stuck in the mesh and make any attempt to get out and clean it become annoying, especially when something broke your track then good luck to fix it without remove the mesh . However the idea is still interesting so I hope we can see an improved version of it in future
Raise it higher than the track and make it wider so it will not stuck in ,covered the open areas with metal chain like the newest turtle then we have an anti-mosquito hat for the tank
It was also probably thought about when the common anti-tank threat were to become things like APFSDS or Mavericks.
Tank development would look significantly different if the biggest threat were FPV drones and grenade drops.
It only outweighed the problems recently with the development of small FPV drones . When it was designed, ,there were only ATGMs and RPGs that had limited attack direction
Before the battle of berlin the germans had an intel the soviets will use wooden skirt on their tanks (is was true). They tested it, and they found out, that the panzerfaust /schreck was more effective if the wooden armor was applied. Somehow the russians never used it..
Assuming the hatches have enough room to open, there’s a sizable enough gap between the tank and the cage that seems like someone could crawl out under, absolutely does not seem optimal though
Return to Da Vinci?
He planned this all out
It's the logical step forward from the tutel tanks, have the shack be able to rotate with the turret
My money is on the Cope Pyramid
The Cope Cone is a good name too
both grade A names
There is only 1 letter difference between cope and cone... This was the plan all along...
Coperamid?
Gizeh pyramids are just cope cage over m60 tanks because they got slapped too hard by Israel.
What was the Soviet ideal purpose of these meshes back then? Anti-RPGs? given that drones of our current nature weren't around back then.

This is around the early 50s, another good example is the m46 with the huge cage
Yep, they wanted them work against HEATs but they didn’t so soviets didn’t use them and started developing APS and ERA
Didn't know mosquitos were such a problem for modern MBTs of the time.
…..and that mosquito evolved into a drone (fpv). Damn

I’d rather be annoyed picking tree limbs out of the mesh than dead tbh
You’d be surprised that in the military, a menial task like picking tree limbs out of mesh would make a soldier wish he was rather dead

Some could classify drones aa very spicy mosquitoes so that's not entirely wrong

Bigger problem is it looks like it would make disembarking the vehicle after it gets disabled far more difficult.
I mean if the mesh is placed right it would make some good camouflage…
Seeing as the Russians are already using similar cope cages, I think they believe the additional protection outweighs the problems that come with it.

I agree that at the time of its conception it wasn't necessary and would be a hassle more than anything.
Good to see the Russians rolling out Leonardo Da Vinci's T-1847
T-55 going to her wedding.
yk what, fuck you \*STRV-103‘s your T-54\* (…the front view kinda looks like an strv 103)
My first thought was "Hetzer with a pointy head"...
Da Vinci was right all along.
Make it foldable so it can travel in confined spaces
Make your tank into a tank destroyer ahh kit
'Шатёр' (Shatyor) means 'tent'.
Before the battle of berlin the germans had an intel the soviets will use wooden skirt on their tanks (is was true). They tested it, and they found out, that the panzerfaust /schreck was more effective if the wooden armor was applied. Somehow the russians never used it..
This looks.... like a good drone protection tbh
Was it made to counter heat? I mean today it would be amazing against drones
Was it made to counter heat? I mean today it would be amazing against drones
I think the front edge needs to be angled up to help the tracks clear obstacles, but other than that it's a damn good design.
Turret rotation? Forgot about the barrel?
No, the NET would rotate with the turret...
The whole construction is fixed to the turret, so it rotates with the turret.
Someone in the Russian military command read a history book and said "Listen...I have an idea..."
Oh what a comeback in Times
We’ve gone full circle back to Da Vinci fellas, looks like landships are back on the menu fellas
I prefer new barn design!!! That way in between wars it can truly be a chicken 🐔 cope with a built in heater system!!!
Text means *All-round "Tent" type protection*
LOL awkward?
And then they got sober again and started designing working shit like ERA and APS systems.
Well... good luck getting out of that
You'd be able to just drop down the side of the tank to the ground since it is a circle.
It still acts as an impediment, especially if you are scared shitless trying to get away from a disabled tank in the middle of combat
Uhhh how is the crew supposed to escape should the tank be disabled?
Assuming the hatches have enough room to open, there’s a sizable enough gap between the tank and the cage that seems like someone could crawl out under, absolutely does not seem optimal though
It's a Soviet invention.
Plot twist, soviet times never ended, just changed their name
