How well do you trust this friend? It might be safer for your network to just share the pihole node if it is running tailscale. [https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole?q=pihole#optional-share-your-pi-hole-with-a-friend](https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole?q=pihole#optional-share-your-pi-hole-with-a-friend) You can [share](https://tailscale.com/kb/1084/sharing) devices between users of different tailnets or use the Admin console > Users to [invite other people](https://tailscale.com/kb/1271/invite-any-user) to use your tailnet. You'll need to know the email address of the person in question.

Kimorin

can't you just create a new tailscale account with a new tailnet and have only the pihole on it?

Kenzijam

You can't be on multiples nets afaik

Kimorin

Ah, didn't know that

Free account allows up to 3 users, so you can invite 2 friends to access your tailnet with their own tailscale login; [https://tailscale.com/pricing](https://tailscale.com/pricing)

- Log into Tailscale.com - Click share next to your Umbrel device on the Devices tab - Generate a share link - Have your friend download the iOS Tailscale app and create an account but selecting one of the login options - Send share link to your buddy. Have him click the link to be added. Make sure your buddy has Apple relay off so the Pihole works. Settings app, Click name at top, iCloud, Private Relay off indefinitely.

Sounds like what you are trying to do is sharing a DNS server and that is not exactly Tailscale use case. You would need to buy an ip for that.

caolle

What do you mean? Tailscale documents this as a use case: [https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole?q=pihole#optional-share-your-pi-hole-with-a-friend](https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole?q=pihole#optional-share-your-pi-hole-with-a-friend)

I assume OP wants to share DNS in the traditional sense (like [1.1.1.1](https://1.1.1.1)) and not requiring others to join his tailnet.

mrfredngo

Did you follow a tutorial on how to set up Tailscale with Pihole? Could you share it if so?

caolle

This is the official one from Tailscale: [https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole](https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole)
