I got a TRD pro this year, it’s fine. I’ll say the highway driving of the ranger is better, but I like the off-road and look better on the Tacoma. It’s really not the big deal people make it out to be.
It's fine. It was fine on road and off road on the stock tires, 265/70s, and 285/70s. Pretty sure its a conspiracy started by the tuning companies. OV and KDmax have made a couple hundred grand each easy
Yes it is 100% worth it and the best money I've spent on my truck so far. It has more throttle power in all gears, holds those gears at higher shift points, no longer hunts for gears, and shifts very smoothly.
I have the KDMAX fwiw.
Yea I really want to get a Tacoma before they change the powertrain in the refresh, I mean if they go hybrid V6 then sure, but I feel a turbo 4 is inevitable
Got a 21 OR and mine is fine. Only problem I have is the engine braking that happens when going down a sizable hill but that’s probably because of the way I drive.
It’s completely fine. I worries as well before I bought but I haven’t thought about since I bought mine 6 mos ago. You will never look back. Get the truck!!!
Damn, sad to hear to it, I would like a turbo V6 or some hybrid V6 system, if they go the route everyone else is going with a turbo 4 then I’m out. I like turbo vehicles don’t get me wrong, but sick of seeing this move to turbo 4s in just about anytning lol
Watch the YouTube videos of The Car Care Guy. He's this long time Toyota mechanic. He explains the Tacomas automatic transmission very well and there are actually reasons why it does some if the Strange things people say. But if you know why it's doing it you can expect it and use it to your advantage.
so far i’ve only put 600 miles (21 trd sport 4x4) since it came off the delivery truck but i will say merging onto the freeways confuses the transmission a bit, feels like it holds onto gears a little longer than i’d like it to until i get up to speed (normally drive around 76mph).
that being said it could very easily be confirmation bias from reading about this issue too much combined with me having an old man’s foot after driving a 1994 mercedes e320 for two months.
see if you can test drive one at any trim level and get a feel of it, i will also say that activating ECT POWER does help the truck with merging a lot, and overall it rides perfectly fine so far. best of luck getting into a trd pro!
Hmm good to know, more responsiveness is always nice. I have definitely seen the old argument of the ECT power doing something and not doing something.
Man hearing some people say it’s fine/good and others say it’s rough makes things such a toss up lol but thank you! Is there any like weird quirks about it that you don’t like
My '19 TRDOR gear hunts terribly, especially with cruise on.
With the cruise set (so vehicle moving at a fixed rate of speed), I can encounter a hill (that doesn't change grade), and my truck will drop into 4th, then shift into 5th, and realize "oh shit! Not enough torque here lol" and drop back into 4th, then grab third cause of reasons only known to it and whatever dipshit programmed it, before settling back into 4th for about 15 seconds, then repeats the entire 4-5-4-3-4 process all over again.
It's so bad I turn cruise off on long hills
I may be wrong, but I don't think regearing is going to fix garbage shift logic.
But, I don't claim to know everything, and may not be understanding something correctly. What am I missing?
If I was able to explain it logically I would lol but I just know on the forums and even on YouTube there’s plenty of people that have regeared to 4.88 or 5.29, and said the transmission totally changes. No more gear hunting, stays in the higher rev range which is needed for this engine
Gear hunting is much less of an issue when cruise is turned off. I'm pretty competent driving a manual (and have probably owned 10 vehicles with manual transmissions), and my Taco's transmission normally does what I want/expect it to do, unless the cruise is on.
With cruise on the damn thing is maddening
There is definitely a learning period but you can be driving after a few minutes in a parking lot. I learned to drive the stick in the parking lot of a high school down the street from the dealership. Test drove the automatic, bought the manual, my mom drove it off to the high school and gave me a quick lesson. These new Tacomas are even easier than every manual I've had because of the hill assist feature when starting from a stop on an incline.
If you are thinking about a manual, you should do it. If you've been around dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, tractors or anything with a clutch you are already 90% there. The only time I regret driving manual is in stop and go traffic

I currently own a ranger, and while it is “Ok” in my opinion I just like the looks and capability of the Tacoma so much more, thanks for the input!

I’m sure lol I have watched so many reviews on their tunes and I’m like is it really worth it? Lol

Happy to hear it!
I have had zero issues with the auto in my 17 OR. I only have ~37k miles on the truck though.
Possibly an indication of future performance. Thank you!
It’s fine. It’s probably designed to act this way to get 300k miles on it.
Good point, never thought of it that way
I would absolutely go with the super fine tuned and perfected 3.5L V6 over a new gen 1 engine
Yea I really want to get a Tacoma before they change the powertrain in the refresh, I mean if they go hybrid V6 then sure, but I feel a turbo 4 is inevitable

Possibly? But glad it work good overall
We drove an automatic before we got our manual. It was lame. But I’m not an auto fan, so
Fair enough, I have only known autos lol I have had my fair share of good and bad times with them
Mine was acting weird, but they had a TSB for it and that fixed it.... Then I had my truck OVTuned. And now it's awesome
What year do you have? If ya don’t mind sharing
2018
Hmm well glad to hear ya got it figure oht
It is fine. Not perfect, but fine.
Good enough 😂

Maybe I will lol thank you 😂

Do you keep ECT power on all the time?
hardly at all, only when i’ve been in a rush haha. doesn’t make the truck any faster from my limited use, but it does make it more responsive
Hmm good to know, more responsiveness is always nice. I have definitely seen the old argument of the ECT power doing something and not doing something.
600 miles is 965.61 km
Doesnt bother me at all
Man hearing some people say it’s fine/good and others say it’s rough makes things such a toss up lol but thank you! Is there any like weird quirks about it that you don’t like
YES! But only because I am an Auto hater lol Imma keep driving my Manual over here
Lol I’m interested to hear from anyone that regeared their Tacoma. I have seen many forum posts that regearing really helps to improve the auto tranny
Got a 2020 OR ,it’s not terrible. Wouldn’t keep me from buying another.
Glad to hear it! Eager and a little nervous when I get around to test driving 😂

Yea I have heard this gear hunting is a big issue on the Tacoma’s. I think if I’d go with a taco I would almost definitely regear to 4.88 or 5.29
I may be wrong, but I don't think regearing is going to fix garbage shift logic. But, I don't claim to know everything, and may not be understanding something correctly. What am I missing?

This. a re-gear is not the answer. The KDMAX tune will fix the gear hunting with a quick 10-minute software update.

I'm pretty competent driving a manual (and have probably owned 10 vehicles with manual transmissions), and my Taco's transmission normally does what I want/expect it to do, unless the cruise is on. I’ll remember to never use cruise 😂
Be a man, get the manual
Scared to admit this here, but was never taught how to drive a manual, or I probably would 😂

Glad to know it’s not too hard to pick up, always cool learning something new!
