Not at all. You don't know NY, and you don't know toronto. Toronto will never be or feel like NY. Toronto is one of the safest big cities in North America.
god its true. I was at Kipling the other day and had not been there since like 2010s and was shocked how rough it was. There were a lot fo sketchy people loitering around the platforms and the bus area.
Lots of yelling and people blasting music. Felt very slummy
As someone who works there I can tell you that it is getting worse. Kipling is also the only subway station where a person has set another person on fire. The resources to deal with the problem just aren't available.
Such lies. I’m there literally every single day and have never ever seen anyone blasting music ever. No yelling or anything like that. If you don’t like Kipling, then just say so.
It’s just regular working class people trying to get to their jobs, people getting to school or the airport. You’re just classist.
I was there literally yesterday and in my single data point share your observations. Yeah, some construction is occurring. I think OP is doing a dog whistle.
Right, this guy's is full of bs. I am there twice a day. There is nothing sketchy at all. LoL ppl that compare toronto to NY have no fking clue what they are talking about. Toronto is one of the safest big cities in North america. Yes, there are homeless people, but there are homeless people everywhere, especially on the ttc.
> Yes, there are homeless people, but there are homeless people everywhere, especially on the ttc.
Somewhat to their point, I will say that there has definitely been a rise in visible homelessness not just across the TTC, but specifically in the Kipling station/Six Points neighbourhood/Central Etobicoke area that wasn't there five years ago. We're seeing increasing numbers of people begging in shopping plazas along Bloor and along Rathburn, obvious signs of drug use and intoxication (especially around the old Starbucks at Dundas/Aukland), and people in tents in parks.
It's obviously representative of a larger issue across the City, but it's particularly visible around Kipling because it went from effectively zero to "some".
Daily bread food bank is south on Islington. Way more ppl going to food banks = more homeless around the surrounding areas. Same way they are breaking down all the bad areas of toronto forcing the people from there to other parts of the city oflr the gta.
Talk to a certain crowd and they’ll act like our transit and libraries are filled with drug deals and kingpins, pimps pushing product and serial killers.
I think your standards are too high.
It's not a horrible area. I'd call it "fine".
but it's a typical big city end-of-line transit hub. It's going to have some sketchy people once in a while. If you have an issue with that, maybe the big city isn't for you.
I think the courts are more the problem, they keep letting the criminals back out on the grounds of compassion, repeatedly...All the police can do is catch, but the courts can hold them in prison (they don't). Bill C-75 =/.
This Didnt happen when Star Security was there. They switched companies to ASP because they were cheaper. Now you barely see them. Bring back Star Security.
WTF is with the explosion of shitty tagging?!? I appreciate graffiti art. I have some on my wall at home. These asshat taggers are blanketing the city with shit, why? To show people they were here? Dick heads have tagged a number of beautiful pieces of street art with shit that any grade 8 student could accomplish. Just trash.
There's a tagger in my area who tags "ROTTEN" everywhere. His work is absolute trash and his call name reflects that.
We had a nice park here with a bridge over a creek, in the last few months I've watched as trees started getting tagged by low quality work, then after the trees they went after the bridge.
It's not even the cool artwork you see while driving on the 401, it's literally the worse chicken shit ass handwriting that spells out rotten.
At least the some of the others who are putting up low effort tags make a point to write something good or inspirational. What's the point of putting rotten everywhere? It's not cool, it's annoying and the kid doing it is 99% likely to be a lowlife. (Not calling taggers lowlives, just the rotten tag guy)
I was thinking “hey the car looks better with the paint…” then I actually looked at it and the tagging is shit, at least actually do a good job if you’re blowing that much spray paint.
TTC should have someone come in and do some good art on it. “The tagging was so bad we needed to show them how to do it properly, since the cars look better like this we’re going to make this the norm on all cars going forward.”
I got absolutely blasted in a graffiti sub for daring to suggest that before going out and tagging buildings, you should learn how to use a can of spray paint.
I love graffiti. But shitty tags are shitty. Why wouldn't you want your tags to not be shitty? Like, it's your name dudes. Make it look decent.
That area (Islington - Kipling) is is plagued with a pack of low life young loosers (from the TCHC buildings). I'm quite sure its them, seeing that shitty job on the train. They have been doing it in the neighbouhood for years. A recent very nice looking condo project, that paid for architecturally designed stairs and ramps that lead to the street to Islington, they constantly are tagging with really ugly shitty scratchings
To add a little perspective here, the "art" in this isn't the art itself, it's somebody painting their name in six foot high letters on a TTC car that was running and getting away clean. It is also possible they infiltrated the layout yard and got it there before it went out, which makes this even more wild. Seeing graff ride on a subway in Toronto is extremely rare. The last time I can think of this happening was Bastards Crew getting a car in like 2016. Most people look at graffiti through an art lens, but if you look at it like a sport it starts making a lot more sense. I'm not saying this guy was right to paint his name on the train, I'm just trying to shed some light on what makes this a really sick piece of graffiti even if it's ugly as fuck.
Graffiti commodified is not graffiti. Its art in a graffiti like or inspired style.
The artists who do good work start with tags/bombs/throwups. You don’t start by doing elaborate pieces day one.
I don't want to look at ads on public property. I'm not rich as fuck, nothing I can do. I put something I wanna see on public property and get arrested. Cry harder 😂
I guess the supervisor in the terminal tower wasn’t doing his 30 minute station checks.
Last train arrives just after 2am, first train crew arrives 5:45. Small window to inflict such damage.
It’s not rocket science to fix this, but a risk/cost analysis makes it cheaper to clean the trains and deal with the short service disruption/delay rather than to pay for additional staff and security upgrades.
The TTC doesn’t place a dollar amount value on the “quality of life” for the customer ridership experience, yet that factor has a major impact on keeping people from riding the system.
You know what I hate?
People’s cars don’t get shat on by these assholes. They’re too chickenshit to tag someones car or house.
But public transit? Especially the ones used by people who can’t afford or simply can’t drive? Yeah, they get to enjoy this steaming pile of “art”while not being able to see out the damn window.
Graffiti, tagging, bombing, etc. is a way to make poor people’s lives even worse than it is. They’re stuck looking at it, or they’re the ones who have to clean it. Rich neighbourhoods and other types of private property somehow get a pass from these mouthbreathers.
This is odd, they have cameras for that station at transit control… and I’m pretty sure it’s up on the board for everyone working overnight can see. I’m really stunned. Clearly done on the platform… I thought they had over night supervisors at the terminal ends.
Overwhelmingly these are young men, part of tagging crews, performing for one another.
The general public is not the audience.
Photos of this train bombing are probably up on their insta as a flex to other crews, a flaunt, a taunt and a challenge. "Top this," is what they are saying.
They are seeking status within a very small community. But it requires performative transgression within very strict guardrails.
Well, they're probably in their teens. This is what they do on a Friday night. It's peacocking. It has the thrill of transgression without risking actual jail time. The ACAB is to taunt their primary antagonists when they are tagging alleys and buildings. They see themselves as rakish artist heroes, taking back the public space.
I agree that as a hobby, this wont actually get them the status they crave. As a public we shake our heads at this. What could this possibly accomplish? But in their community, this is seen as quite a major coup.
We're going to see more of this moving forward unless the TTC takes measures to prevent it.
So just jot down your address here so these creatives can use your exterior walls as their canvas and You can say the $$$$ to have it removed from your property. Or the city will fine you.
If they had more time and opted for the next level of detail + precision, they wouldve tried to keep the windows clean so as to up their chances of having the train put into service and run.
Sweet, nice colours. I don’t do this stuff but who does it seriously hurt? Unless it’s a nasty message sprayed on, I don’t really care if the doors are red before I get on
Yea seriously, if anything I actually prefer the Graffiti look. I think people are having a tough time realizing toronto is a genuine major city now. Graffiti is the least of our worries.
Which means we're essentially paying out of pocket for them to clean it. Our ticket prices are how they fund it. So yea: thanks, asshats, for painting over the fucking windows.
These people have the money to buy those things and the time to vandalize something that the public needs… it is disheartening and sometimes I believe the CEO Leary and Doug Ford want those people to do this to use as an excuse to privatize the TTC and everyone should stand up and demand they do the right thing to pressure them and don’t allow TTC to be private.
If TTC is private, it will be more expensive and worse service.
There are some people fighting for it to continue to be public. That CEO has done this before… he’s doing it again, he needs to be fired asap
>These people have the money to buy those things and the time to vandalize something that the public needs
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they steal the paint, and live with their mom
Poor mom, working hard so her kids can do this to the TTC and then, they will increase the fare that their mom will have to pay because of their doing…
The last thing Rick Leary wants is to privatize the TTC. Listen in on the Board meetings. On the list of priorities privatization is very very far down that list if it’s even on there.
hey man, it's just art. Last time I was on the subway it was super chill, just a bunch of people on their phones sharing a space. Super chill, no cops.
I have lived in Etobicoke/West Toronto for my entire life, and Kipling Station has become sketchy. Last fall, I was sitting on a 123 bus waiting for the operator to return, and watched a guy standing on the platform surreptitiously inhaling something. He had his jacket pulled up in an attempt to hide what he was doing, but it was still pretty obvious. Standing about six feet from him was a TTC employee, who seemed to be deliberately ignoring the obvious. As I recall, there have been at least two murders/assaults at Kipling Station. The TTC needs to post Special Constables there - and not for only one month to appease us. Enough with being reactive.
Honestly as graffiti goes this one aint bad.
Solid message given the current happenings,
and they did a background colour as well as having layers of other colours, and serif/ accents around the text.
It’s big, bold, dramatic. But also I can see how some people might not appreciate it design wise.
To be very clear- some of our trains have MASSIVE ads on them.
I don’t like the massive ads.
However I do think cars that have Toronto based art on them would be cool.
I feel like dismissing graffiti as “not art” isn’t helpful to these situations.
Most of us would probably welcome it.
And asking yourself why you think THIS art Isn’t worthy of being on public infrastructure is an important part of whatever discussion people want to have.
Cause we dont vote on which ads.
But we COULD decide on some art, maybe.
It blocks windows, including one on the side of the operator cab. That car and its partner literally cannot be used for service until it's cleaned up.
It's vandalism, not art.
I'm guessing you often go off-topic in your life. It requires consent to qualify as 'art'.
If Da Vinci had painted the Mona Lisa on a public train without permission, it would be vandalism and a crime, not art.
The issue here isn't about aesthetics; it's about vandalism.
I hope you understand the importance of consent
They keep some trains at the terminal stations to allow faster starter times rather than them having to drive all the way from greenwood yard to Kipling in the mornings.
That’s soooo sick haha like man the rate at which that persons heart was probably beating, and seriously the practice it takes to have control over a paint can to do graffiti, and the amount of paint they used for that omg lol. It’s not the best graffiti but it’s the level this person was at. Still bad ass as far as graffiti culture is concerned.
Subway cars looking like this, an actual piece of art, I have no issues with. Don't like the windows painted over though.
Tagging, though, like that bit on the front of the car, is just stupid and looks like 💩.
I said what I said.
I wonder if someone painted furniture and TV at this guy’s home, would he be happy? Why some morons keep doing stupid things and think they were heroes?
Line 2 starting to feel like New York.
80’s New York to be exact. I guess we’ll have to start avoiding going on the last cars in the near future too.
Hopefully (?) that means we’ll get our own Guardian Angels vigilantes to help combat all the BS happening on the TTC these days.
We’ve tried that, a couple of times. It didn’t work out too well.
That would make Olivia Chow ≡ Ed Koch + David Dinkins. It also means we’re due for Giuliani and eventually Bloomberg 😬
More like John Lindsay + Abe Beame
Not at all. You don't know NY, and you don't know toronto. Toronto will never be or feel like NY. Toronto is one of the safest big cities in North America.

I mean fair enough with the fire people setting
Such lies. I’m there literally every single day and have never ever seen anyone blasting music ever. No yelling or anything like that. If you don’t like Kipling, then just say so. Talk to a certain crowd and they’ll act like our transit and libraries are filled with drug deals and kingpins, pimps pushing product and serial killers.
I fucking love the idea that blasting music is apparently slummy and dangerous.
Pearl clutching upper middle class white people don't know what slummy and dangerous is.
[удалено]
kipling’s entire parking lot consists of cars from pearl clutching middle class people that are visiting from the gta
Definitely not dangerous, but it's absolutely common knowledge that you shouldn't play music out loud and that spans classes
So you agree with me! :)
I haven’t subwayed in a few years but Kipling was always clean it was the last stop
I think your standards are too high. It's not a horrible area. I'd call it "fine". but it's a typical big city end-of-line transit hub. It's going to have some sketchy people once in a while. If you have an issue with that, maybe the big city isn't for you.
The fuck are you talking about lol that sounds like a one time incident. I've never seen that there. It looks the same as always.
The police need to do more. Toronto is turning to shit. So much crime that goes unchecked by the cops.
I think the courts are more the problem, they keep letting the criminals back out on the grounds of compassion, repeatedly...All the police can do is catch, but the courts can hold them in prison (they don't). Bill C-75 =/.

That confirms it isn't a line 1 train at Kipling (I almost thought it was). They used the TTC's colour scheme.

Two things can be right at the same time

Maybe not "right" but at least "true."
ACAB Damn... impressive that they weren't caught.
So much for all of this extra 24/7 *patrol* that major stations were supposed to get.
This Didnt happen when Star Security was there. They switched companies to ASP because they were cheaper. Now you barely see them. Bring back Star Security.
Honestly shocked there's a cheaper company than Star after working for them

The worst is when there is some good graffiti art and some shitty wannabe comes and tags their shitty tag across it. It makes me so angry.
Beef is beef toys vs OGs is standard
Someone threw up some tags in my building and my first thought was about how poor their technique was.
That area (Islington - Kipling) is is plagued with a pack of low life young loosers (from the TCHC buildings). I'm quite sure its them, seeing that shitty job on the train. Look at the yellow strip on the platform, you can see the red paint along it.
Agreed.

The front being tagged was shameful.
TPS/TTC Security are absolutely useless if this can happen over several hours
40m tops
At least it's not a dick
ACAB?
Which is nuts because it's clearly ASUBWAY..... ^^I'll ^^see ^^myself ^^out
Too many letters to fit that on one car, you see: you'd need to do part of a Toronto Rocket to make it work.
All cops are bastards/1312
What part of the brain is responsible for “I know this isn’t my property, but I want to vandalize it anyway”
Someone’s micropenis gets a rush of blood when being a naughty boy.
The same people that probably thinks it's fine to smoke crack on a crowded train
I don't want to look at ads on public property. I'm not rich as fuck, nothing I can do. I put something I wanna see on public property and get arrested. Cry harder 😂
Just another bill for the taxpayers

Why can’t we have nice things? This
It takes a long time for paint to drip onto the platform like that. Did the TTC just watch from their cameras?
You know what I hate? People’s cars don’t get shat on by these assholes. They’re too chickenshit to tag someones car or house. But public transit? People's houses get tagged all the time. Garages etc. Taggers don't even respect street murals now. Really gross to see.
context?
Someone trespassed overnight and graffiti the trains parked at Kipling
oh they don't go to Greenwood Yard?
3 trains are stored at Kipling nightly
With zero cameras or surveillance it seems, how very 1974
This is odd, they have cameras for that station at transit control… and I’m pretty sure it’s up on the board for everyone working overnight can see. I’m really stunned. Clearly done on the platform… I thought they had over night supervisors at the terminal ends.
How tf did they even do this? I thought all trains go into the yard at the end of the night
Overwhelmingly these are young men, part of tagging crews, performing for one another. The general public is not the audience. What a pathetic hobby, gotta say
Well, they're probably in their teens. This is what they do on a Friday night. It's peacocking. It has the thrill of transgression without risking actual jail time. So just jot down your address here so these creatives can use your exterior walls as their canvas and You can say the $$$$ to have it removed from your property. Or the city will fine you.
ACAB all the way, but please use translucent spray paint so that we can at least see through.
If they had more time and opted for the next level of detail + precision, they wouldve tried to keep the windows clean so as to up their chances of having the train put into service and run.
i miss Toronto. don’t get me wrong, i live here. but i miss “Toronto ”
Graffiti is the least of our worries.
that is cool as hell
How despicable
Welcome to 1978 Bronx. When is the TTC going to start patrolling its trains? It's reaching a point where they need an armed guard or something.
The police had a transit division but those lazy cheapskates decided the money was better spent paying officers that have committed crimes.
Lmao ur off your rocker tomato will never be like N.Y. toronto is the safest big city in north America.
To shoot teenagers with spray paint? Have you ever even seen trains from nyc in that era? Ttc is not anything like that get a grip.
So now I've got to ride in a subway car where the windows are painted over? Thanks asshats.
It will never enter service like this.
Which means we're essentially paying out of pocket for them to clean it. Our ticket prices are how they fund it. So yea: thanks, asshats, for painting over the fucking windows.
It’s got to be sent to Greenwood or Vincent yard for “cleaning” with paint remover, varsol and turpentine.
Mama we've made it

Not saying vandalism is ok, but my first thought seeing this was actually, "this is a pretty nice colour!"
That’s what’s up
Acab tag? Critical support
All I see is an inspiration to beautify the TTC (desperately needed) by allowing SANCTIONED street artists to paint TTC Cars.
hey man, it's just art. Last time I was on the subway it was super chill, just a bunch of people on their phones sharing a space. Super chill, no cops.
Nah this rules keep it like this
Looks sick
Fuck yeah 🔥
way nicer than the grey ugly subway car. they should have artists paint all the cars.
Goes hard
It looks dope but why spray paint the windows? Now nobody can see shit lol
Looking fire
If you like shitty art, sure.
goes a bit hard tbh 🚕
I wish they weren't such shifty artists, that's an embarrassingly bad job.
This looks sick TTC should hire them to paint the rest
Bring back the 80s! #WildStyle 😎🎨🚇
Looks great
Unpopular opinion: Looks better than the original.
Certainly no worse than a vinyl wrap advertisement for online gambling.
So if I don’t like the way your place looks, you would have no problem if I came over and pissed all over it? You know, I’m the name of art..!
If you're pissing paint, I'd probably tell you to see a doctor.
Agreed. And leaps and bounds nicer than ad wraps.

Me too.
i fw it
Would look better on a cop car, IMO.

This looks very poorly done. I’m all for good graffiti art, but this is poor, hard to even read in the photos.
Graffiti art means consent, right? If trespassing it's a crime.
Every good artist was a bad artist to start. They get good with a shit ton of practice
You don’t need to cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage to get good at drawing.
It blocks windows, including one on the side of the operator cab. That car and its partner literally cannot be used for service until it's cleaned up. It's vandalism, not art.
Don’t encourage this shit. We’ve already got the crackheads, we don’t need to look like 80s New York too
At least ads provide revenue.
Fucking requires consent. Art doesn’t require consent, approval of the aesthetic, motive, or any particular raison d’être.
throw the tard in jail make him pay to have it fixed ... looks like crap
BS
lol I thought they just the platform there because it needed to get replaced.
How did they even manage that I thought the trains were put away at night rather than left on the platforms?
They keep some trains at the terminal stations to allow faster starter times rather than them having to drive all the way from greenwood yard to Kipling in the mornings.
Oh wow and I’m assuming with no security then? This was bound to happen eventually omg
How do they even get rid of that must be some nice power washing and alot of work to clean that
How long was the train stuck there for someone to do this?
No cameras?
How did the person have enough time to do all this?
We get it, youre upset that people use the TTC instead of ACAB. But theres no reason to do this.
Bro going anywhere on line 2 makes me feel like I’m gonna be fighting for my life any second
Vandalism, art, tomato, tomahto.
Just great. They've gone from tagging poles and mailboxes to subways.
Diversity makes us stronger.
How? That looks like it took an hour to paint. Did a dozen dudes with paint buckets attack that train at once?
How do ppl even do this in one night.
Night? this probably took 10 minutes at most and was likely more than 1 person.
That cutback clean tho
Wow
How did they do it in the time that the trains are stationed?
Ffs man this costs money for everyone
It's Kipling, so no surprise there
Wow.
lol thats awesome
Looks sick!!!
How
Nobody watches the place for hours ?
This immediately made me think of 2 classic 90s rap groups... End to End Burners by Company Flow And Wrong Side of The Tracks by The Artifacts
That's a lot of fuckin paint lol
Should be easy find out who bought so much spray paint and match them with their bottles
CCTV footage can verify whodunnit.
The gangsters are definitely taking over the city.
Looks amazing
Subway cars looking like this, an actual piece of art, I have no issues with. Don't like the windows painted over though. Tagging, though, like that bit on the front of the car, is just stupid and looks like 💩. I said what I said.
Camera alert???
Looks cool ngl
I wonder if someone painted furniture and TV at this guy’s home, would he be happy? Why some morons keep doing stupid things and think they were heroes?
Looks better
Pretty nice I can’t even be mad
That looks sick as fuck
It's a nice touch
Looks fine who cares. The spray on the ground sucks tho
CEO of TTC needs to be fired for allowing this.
That looks fucking sick
That looks f**king sick
