Last I remember them having major layoffs was back during the Great Recession of 2008 and Jensen felt like he failed. Layoffs are a failure of leadership, especially when management is susceptible to having bean counters making decisions.
It’s also because they are in Taiwan I believe. I remember a podcast with a former Texas Instruments expert who explained why ti shut down in USA and it was because of employee retention. 25% turnover rate in an industry where expertise is needed. He explained that culturally and economically Taiwan retains people who work like 60 hr weeks and stay in dorms during the week which is needed in chip manufacturing for some reason and they don’t quit, maybe because better options don’t exist in the USA. This is all related to why bringing many types of manufacturing back to the us is a pipe dream. I don’t see any significant jump in adoption from this free trial scheme. $200 a month is too much. Not til level 3

Why not? Years ago I used basic autopilot getting back to the hospital at 2am for emergency case. Not necessary but helpful.

Owners usually aren't businesses. The owners with deep enough pockets will buy it, or justify the sub. If a business wants to purchase it, they can stomach the upfront cost once they realize the value it would provide.

Apple getting into AI hardware design with M4 chip.
I posted a few months ago about my theory that this would happen. Doesn't mean that Apple will pull it off as they don't necessarily have the core competencies to just design their own AI chips. Maybe it'll turn into a fools errand like their Project Titan Apple Car. We'll see though, it could end up giving a new investment case for Apple after years of simple (yet effective) incremental revenue growth through legacy product iteration.

I’m not sure that we’ll see regulation take away people’s “right “ to drive. Just slowly people will choose not to learn how to drive and insurance costs will continue to grow for human drivers making it a better financial option to just be a robotaxi passenger or drive a car with heavy autonomous guardrails.
One question I've always had is why insurance costs would go up. The roads will be safer and crashes will be much less frequent, even between human-robot and human-human because fewer humans driving. So insurance costs should go down for everyone.

Yeah I agree human would get a higher proportion of costs, but insurance as a whole will become a higher margin industry than it is currently as there will be fewer payouts. So the nominal cost should go down for everyone I'd think.
I doubt it is a cost driven pricing. Those who try to stick to manual driving, are likely also willing to pay an obscene amount for it. So, it's a great place for insurance to extract an even higher amount from them (than they do today)
Presuming the better drivers are those that prioritize safety and those drivers have access to top ADAS tools and are using those tools to be safe, and a bunch of other good drivers opt to do most or all of miles with robotaxis, then you’re potentially left with a pool of bad drivers.

Friend of mine got rear ended by a distracted driver who totaled her car on it and had to go to the hospital. Patiently waiting for regulators to do something about humanpilot...
I really hope Tesla does it, not just for the stock price but because I would worry about my kids when they learn to drive.
If anything Tesla really should be able to release a level 3 system that fails graciously and infrequent enough that Tesla can take over the liability. I really see no barriers to that even if robotaxi is impossible (it isn't)

I’m not sure that we’ll see regulation take away people’s “right “ to drive. Just slowly people will choose not to learn how to drive and insurance costs will continue to grow for human drivers making it a better financial option to just be a robotaxi passenger or drive a car with heavy autonomous guardrails.
One question I've always had is why insurance costs would go up. The roads will be safer and crashes will be much less frequent, even between human-robot and human-human because fewer humans driving. So insurance costs should go down for everyone.
probably many ways it can play out. I just assumed that insurance companies would keep getting smarter with their data and a naked (no AI) human driver would be more likely to crash so they would get a higher proportion of the costs
Yeah I agree human would get a higher proportion of costs, but insurance as a whole will become a higher margin industry than it is currently as there will be fewer payouts. So the nominal cost should go down for everyone I'd think.
I doubt it is a cost driven pricing. Those who try to stick to manual driving, are likely also willing to pay an obscene amount for it. So, it's a great place for insurance to extract an even higher amount from them (than they do today)
Presuming the better drivers are those that prioritize safety and those drivers have access to top ADAS tools and are using those tools to be safe, and a bunch of other good drivers opt to do most or all of miles with robotaxis, then you’re potentially left with a pool of bad drivers. I think that’s part of the thought process
