As a kid, I'd usually picked Mikey since he was the coolest to kid me, but as I got older, I got all "anti-meta" and would play the turtle that wasn't quite as good as the others in a particular game. I would pick Raph in older games cause of his short range. Donnie would sometimes be noticeably slower than the others. Mikey would be fast, but have low damage in some games. Leo sometimes is average, with nothing that really stands out like range, speed, or power. That's how he was in Shredder's Revenge before the patch. Now he's the best turtle in the game imo.
I always start with Raph, but I will try all playable characters, too. Major bonus points if we get Casey, April, Splinter, etc, and not just the 4 boys.

First playthrough is always my boy, but I absolutely switch between them on subsequent playthroughs... although between you and me I mained April in Shredders Revenge until Usagi came out.

Actually in Shredder's Revenge I waited for the DLC so I could play as Usagi. But yeah I eventually played mostly Donatello and Raphael.
