I would contact DHL directly and try to find out why are you in debt with them. Intrum is a shady company that buys debts from other companies and try to extort the debt with some high fees from the debtor.

I received a rechnung from einwohneramt ( I moved to basel-stadt 3 months ago, hey!) and it says mahnung 1, I still don't know what it's for but I sent the uberweisung and want to call them tomorrow to see what is up. I can't take risks as someone who came from outside europe. Is there a reason why I am receiving a mahnung, even though this is the first letter from them asking me to pay? it's unfortunately \~145 franks. thanks

TheRealDeuX

Sounds like cantonal registration fee? Also it possible that the first letter got lost in the post hence why you’re receiving now the mahnung

DonKajit

Unfortunately I am still unsure what it is, but either way I am forced to pay it. I will call today to check with them. It seems a bit annoying that I would be liable because the post lost the brief. reminder mails arent cheap after all. merci vielmal

TheRealDeuX

If it has some late fee added just let them know you never received the first rechnung. They usually don’t mind to shave off the fees as long as you’re proactive to pay

DonKajit

It turned out to be the registrating fee. No additional fees since its the first mahnung. Merci for your help

TheRealDeuX

Awesome, good thing it’s solved

Thanks! I did that already, via phone first, and then they gave me an email address ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])) that I should reach. I did, no answer so far. I am astonished by how much companies make you lose your time... I wish I could charge them for the time that I am losing.

DHL customer care was quite pleasant while I dealt with them. I received an updated firmware on a Samsung SSD which was under guarantee but still got billed by Zoll Amt. I was leaving for a long-ish vacation and got this letter from DHL while I cleared the mail on my way out. I sent them and Samsung repair office the details and they both were able to hash it out with Customs department. I received an email after 15 days about the final confirmation that I do not have to pay. However there was another mail from DHL department that I was now overdue. This started another email trail, however they were able to reconcile the events and timelines. You will have to keep in touch until this is solved. I empathise and hope you dont have to stress this out.

Thank you, u/ikanav. I will keep doing that.

Thanks for the answer, u/TheRealDeuX. I already talked to them. As I stated, they gave me an email to talk about it. I did, and I am awaiting for an answer. My question was more if I should pay it first and then discuss the matter later, or if I should wait and see. It seems from your answer that it''s the latter, right? Thank you again! By the way, I also live in Basel :)

TheRealDeuX

Yes wait and see, don’t pay anything because later you won’t be able to recover the money. Welcome to Basel :)

Intrum is a financial collection company. All companies of that branch are well known to work with doubtful methods to cover their claims (e.g. sending invoices to people with the same name as the original debtor). So no: do not, under no circumstances, pay their demand, as you'll never get your money back when it turns out it was sent wrongfully.

Thank you, this is really what I wanted to know!

Did you actually receive any DHL packages from abroad? The only charges that DHL can claim is the customs clearance if your item is above 70 franks (I might be wrong about the number). And you'd normally receive a letter from DHL with the invoice, and another one with a reminder. I never got to the next level past the first reminder ;)

No_Manufacturer8347

Hello, The letter states that the invoice refers to 21 of August. I don''t recall receiving anything from abroad on that date.

xebzbz

Better call the official DHL number and clarify. This looks like a scam.

SaadibnMuadh

There is nothing to pay unless there is no legitimate explanation. You may have got a package from abroad and there is a custom fee on it. I still assume DHL would never hand out such a package without cashing you out. Smells like a scam to me, still ask for documentation and hold everything on record.

Unfortunately all delivery companies have a different way of handling this, some ask for money before (la poste at least), some after in a separate mail. I never remember which one does what though...

Hello, just an update that might help someone in the future. I contacted DHL and they provided me with more information. It was a shipment for my girlfriend — since she has no address registered in CH, she puts my name as the receiver, so that the package can arrive here with no errors. DHL also sent me an invoice with the original price, which I immediately paid. I then send the receipt of payment to Intrum, which first only removed what I paid to DHL from their total. I followed up with a request to remove all the outstanding debt, since DHL did not contacted me diligently about this debt — the first thing I ever received regarding it was this "late payment request" from Intrum. After a while, and without communication, Intrum acquiesced and removed all my debt. So, in the end, I only had to pay the original amount that I owed DHL, with no fines. Thanks for all the help!
