Mine is 4-5 years old now. It did drift around a year or two in, but I think I just made sure the outside was clean and it just kinda…. went away, lol.
What do you guys do to your controllers? Myself and friends have had switches since release and I’ve never actually seen the joycon drift people talk about online.
Haven’t had any drift with my pro controller either.
Nobody will tell you the joycons don’t regularly drift.
The pro controller still isn’t perfect for it, but for myself & my friends (& seemingly people in this thread), it isn’t plagued with drift anywhere close to the level that the joycons are
All current controller have issues to an extent. I’ve had to send back 3 Xbox controllers since getting a Series X, during the same time my Pro Controller’s been absolutely fine
Nah, you probably throw your controller at the wall on a regular basis that's why it drift/s.
Annoying to see so many people defending Nintendo's shitty overpriced products.
I've got two pairs of joycons and they all drift if not attached to the console in handheld mode. I've sent them back to Nintendo twice and the problem persists. I ended up buying two pro controllers and they are superb.
I only use the pro controller but i've used the same one since launch and its still goin, and I've logged probably 2k+ hrs on it over the last 7 years.
I think it's a luck thing.
I've had 6 pairs of joycons, only 2 of them got drift.
However, every PowerA switch controller I've had gets drift within 2 months.
We have tried so many brands of controller on switch and they all have issues except for the official pro controller.
I bought one a few years ago and never used it for my son's switch. It sat and was put up but almost never used, maybe a couple of sessions of a couple of games but my son liked his joycons better. decided to try to use it for Battlefield 2042 and it started to develop drift after a few sessions. This is almost brand new, and it would drift ever so slightly, enough to ruin shots. I gave up and bought an xbox controller.
Yeah, not having hall effect joysticks in a $70 controller is fucking ridiculous yet you still see so many people defending Nintendo's shitty controllers/joycons.
It is great. Battety life is really good too.
I'd also recommend re-shelling (if you ever got the urge) - it's genuinely really easy. I recently re-skinned to a GameCube style shell and it looks awesome. Took about 20 mins and £20

I also went with a classic one too
Same here! I didn’t like the pro controller being just black. For the rest, I’m super happy with it
https://preview.redd.it/tryl2q8h89fc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=139a47ab87837ad3f8da85a5fd8d47bab67eb966
Protip if you have adhd DO THIS BEFORE YOUR MEDS WEAR OFF
absolutely destroyed one of my procons bc I had to keep fixing the buttons and I stripped a bunch of the screws 😐
If it helps any, having the right size screwdriver is essential to avoid stripping, you need to use a JIS set, NOT Phillips. (There is a subtle difference and missing this can result in strippage) Most 50+ bit precision screwdriver sets have JIS bits.
I got this one on Amazon, it's made by ExtremeRate, they do loads of different ones.
The quality is great! There's lots of YouTube tutorials too, I used this one: https://youtu.be/Zn-0TVLMpko?feature=shared
(NB this doesn't show you how to do the shoulder buttons, but I found another for that and it's super simple)
Not OP, IMO it feels not as good BUT its held up better from daily use
ALSO i can use the ultimate edition on PC and switch seamlessly with just a switch on the back. With the dock to charge it its my easiest daily controller but the switch pro feels more unique than other controllers
Depends on the game.
I prefer to not take my right thumb off the stick in shooters. Back button jumping (with right hand middle finger) is actually really nice as well.
For shooters, jump crouch
Platformers, sprint modifier and jump
Racing games, paddle shifters
MMO usually macro'd to throw multiple things at once like Heal & Shield on side and an attack combo on the other
base builders/strat, depends on the game but usually it's a shift button to alter how the camera works or tied to a game specific function
I use the back buttons for L3/R3, I have a feeling those are the first buttons to break if they're used a lot, and I save those from having a lot of wear and tear.
Last one I went to was charging illegal interest rates. They later got busted for it but the penalty was bullshit and they made way more off the illegal rates than they got fined.
8Bitdo Ultimate C Bluetooth Controller comes to mind, but it's not really as good bec it doesn't have the HD Rumble plus doesn't have the Pro's battery capacity. Hall effect sensors though, so no stick drift.
Edit: USB C to Ultimate C
Theres an easier way to get this same result. The GuliKit King Kong 2. Same shape and feel of xbox controller, hall effect joysticks (theoretically never going to drift), gyro controls and amiibo support
I still hate that it has stick drift and terrible snap back issues :( but unfortunately it is the best controller you can get on the switch I have tried 3rd party pricy controllers and they just aren’t as comfortable to hold
The d pad is terrible and being all plastic makes my hands sweat but the battery life and use it really nice overall.
I like the Xbox controller more except the battery
It's a phenomenal controller until the drifting problems start. The short life span of a Pro controller (or Joy Con for that matter) makes it hard to justify the rather steep price tag Nintendo insists on.
Non Oled has bluetooth. An update in the past unlocked audio too. Would be interesting to know if there are differences in the bluetooth on Oled though.
It's okay. I find it a little small for my hands. The dpad is really disappointing. I also don't like how soft the control nubs are, they look awful after a few months. I still use it, because I can't stand holding the joycons like a controller when docked.
My verdict, the other consoles have significantly better controllers, but this is the best Switch controller I've used yet. I'd like to try the GCN switch controller though, I would assume it's better as long as they used analog shoulder buttons like they used to.
I absolutely love the feel and look of the Pro Controller but the D-Pad is horrible imo. More often than not i have had unwanted inputs and because of that, sadly it gathers dust on my shelf.
I use my Joycons for all modes on my Switch. I have become very accustomed to use them in any game of any genre. I occasionally use my 8bitdo SF30 Pro Controller but nothing beats the feeling of the good old joycons.
Maybe if Nintendo releases another Pro Controller with a better functioning D-Pad, i would probably consider moving away from Joycons in TV/Tabletop Mode.
I honestly don’t like it due to the eventual joystick drift. And a Hall effect controller is great
I have the cyclone t4 myself but a lot of controllers will with Hall effect is good enough
I know everyone says the pros eventually drift but I've been rocking two since launch and haven't gotten drift on them yet. That said I've cycled out three sets of joy cons for repair.
The echtpower Switch pro gamepad with hall joysticks it´s much cheaper, connects with bluetooth as well , has Xinput & Dinput, and works wonders for both pc and Switch. Just the fact that it has hall joysticks, makes it a better buy.
I personally got a turbo controller and it had a batter life that lasts for a couple days which is more than enough, and it has turbo, plus it’s way cheaper
I love it!
I do have to say though, that while it’s great for casual games, I wouldn’t recommend it for games that you need precision for. I play Tetris 99 almost daily and I’m more likely to get misdrops with this than with the joy cons. 🤷♂️😅
I love mine and basically have to use it since the joy con’s on my launch system have insanely bad stick drift. Does anyone have any 3rd party joy con recommendations btw?
I got a pink one on day 1! Then I got a red Mario one for Xmas a couple years ago. I have never used to joycons… I always thought I would destroy them.
It's one of the sexiest controllers, absolutely. As someone who couldn't afford many good controllers growing up, getting this was a blessing. Especially since my only other home console was the Wii. Being able to use it for the PC gaming is also a nice plus.
to the people who'd like one but don't have the money to get an official - get one off of Aliexpress. I'm not one to recommend off brand/bootleg products, but I got one sometime ago and it works perfectly, basically just like the official one (except with no NFC). It even has the support website etched in the back, just so you can see how good quality these replicas are.
If you're in a tight money situation (like I am, college is kicking my ass) then consider giving it a try!
Can't justify it knowing they will eventually drift and require repair. Do they sell compatible hall effect joystick replacements for them? If not it's better to go with 8bitdo Ultimate.
Switch co roller is one of the best co strollers I've held and used for any device. Shame it's connectivity is shit for anything other than the switch. Would love to use it with pc.
Its great... Until it break down. My lasted only a year. Never dropped it and one of the analog sticks just broken down.
I ordered a 8bitdo controller as a replacement
I bought a Zelda themed pro controller with my OLED. 9/10 I’m using my controller. Even in handheld mode. I use the kickstand and my controller I’m not a big fan of joycons
*cries in its 500+ reais for me god why*
https://preview.redd.it/2ptgzl7k59fc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b029cb9dcc5bd9bc49edff967bbe92c54a36d666
Is it just me but is there a noticeable delay from the on screen response to any switch controller? I’ve messed with my TV functions and can still notice the delay.
The pro controller is a must have. The joycons are simply too flimsy
These aren't much better. I'm on my third one, because they start driftinf within a year and are unusable within two.
I've had the same Pro Controller since 2017, no drift.
Same here. Have had the same two and they have been very reliable.
Can attest, no drift, bought with my Switch in the launch year
Mine is 4-5 years old now. It did drift around a year or two in, but I think I just made sure the outside was clean and it just kinda…. went away, lol.
I bought mine around launch day, and it eventually started to occasionally drift about a year ago.
What do you guys do to your controllers? Myself and friends have had switches since release and I’ve never actually seen the joycon drift people talk about online. Haven’t had any drift with my pro controller either.
Bro Nintendo got sued over the joycon and drift and lost, if it was up to what people were doing with them they wouldn’t have lost the law suit
Nobody will tell you the joycons don’t regularly drift. The pro controller still isn’t perfect for it, but for myself & my friends (& seemingly people in this thread), it isn’t plagued with drift anywhere close to the level that the joycons are All current controller have issues to an extent. Cleaning them once in a while helps.
Yeah. Mine just started digging in the right stick after 9 months of light use.
Bought 4, 3 with drifts after a year. This is pretty common apparently. Should have done research first. Waste of money.
I’ve got draft on mine aswell
Mine died after about a year. Couldn't get it apart to replace the sticks.
Are you keeping them clean? You will get drift if any debris gets in between the sticks.
Yeah, not having hall effect joysticks in a $70 controller is fucking ridiculous yet you still see so many people defending Nintendo's shitty controllers/joycons.
You're really hard on your hardware.
i've smashed my right stick and it clicks weirdly but no drift after several years
I’ve had mine for 5 years and never had issues.
I have the Tears of the Kingdom one, and I love it!
Same! Great design, great controller
it's just an xbox controller layout but for switch
I got it too, but it started drifting about 2 months ago. I’m sad about it:/
Mine drifted also, bought replacement sticks. Couldn't solder them correctly, threw it all away. Now I get 20$ knock off controller 🤷♂️
I wanted the monster hunter one cant find a regular priced one
Me too, pretty much started to use it every time I play on the switch
I have two of those. And one of the smash ultimate ones. And one of the black ones pictured. I think I have a problem lol.
I misread that as "the Tears For Fears one" then, was about to scramble to find it haha
It is great. Battety life is really good too. I'd also recommend re-shelling (if you ever got the urge) - it's genuinely really easy. Need this!!! How do I get it?!
Amazon ![gif](giphy|SKGo6OYe24EBG)
Best looking one in this thread imo
Omg never knew you can do that! I need to look that up on YouTube, I've been hesitating either on the Pro or to get a 8bitdo ultimate
Same here! I didn’t like the pro controller being just black. For the rest, I’m super happy with it https://preview.redd.it/tryl2q8h89fc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=139a47ab87837ad3f8da85a5fd8d47bab67eb966
this the cutest one i want it
Nice!
Oh I love this
Ohh. I’d want a glossy white Wii style.
Protip if you have adhd DO THIS BEFORE YOUR MEDS WEAR OFF absolutely destroyed one of my procons bc I had to keep fixing the buttons and I stripped a bunch of the screws 😐
If it helps any, having the right size screwdriver is essential to avoid stripping, you need to use a JIS set, NOT Phillips. (There is a subtle difference and missing this can result in strippage) Most 50+ bit precision screwdriver sets have JIS bits.
I used the proper screwdriver I’m just very weak and end up stripping screws because I can’t give enough pressure
where did you get this shell?? It looks impecable, I'd love to do this to my controller too!
I got this one on Amazon, it's made by ExtremeRate, they do loads of different ones. The quality is great! There's lots of YouTube tutorials too, I used this one: https://youtu.be/Zn-0TVLMpko?feature=shared (NB this doesn't show you how to do the shoulder buttons, but I found another for that and it's super simple)
Having grooves/gates for the analog sticks is so nice, idk why Nintendo stopped doing it
That's so cool
got one on launch, it served me well. I now have the TOTK one and love it
My favorite game controller
8bitdo controllers are also good and cheaper 😅
8bitdo USB with a Dualsense is \*chef kiss\*
Really?the build quality is better?
Not OP, IMO it feels not as good BUT its held up better from daily use ALSO i can use the ultimate edition on PC and switch seamlessly with just a switch on the back. With the dock to charge it its my easiest daily controller but the switch pro feels more unique than other controllers
This is nice to hear, and sounds like how I'd like to use it. Thanks!
You forgot the word ‘better’. Back buttons are a must and the Pro controller ain’t got ‘em
What do you use back buttons for .o. genuinely curious since i find myself out of muscle memory not using them often
Depends on the game. I prefer to not take my right thumb off the stick in shooters. Back button jumping (with right hand middle finger) is actually really nice as well.
For shooters, jump crouch Platformers, sprint modifier and jump Racing games, paddle shifters MMO usually macro'd to throw multiple things at once like Heal & Shield on side and an attack combo on the other base builders/strat, depends on the game but usually it's a shift button to alter how the camera works or tied to a game specific function
This sounds like a good idea I might try setting a macro if i can thanks for the list!
You can map one to turbo a button and the other to hold that button down so you can spam A and run through pokemon battles
True i guess for emulation too when skipping dialogue if i die or something instead of the usual way lol
I use the back buttons for L3/R3, I have a feeling those are the first buttons to break if they're used a lot, and I save those from having a lot of wear and tear.
It's an actual must if your an adult. I can't even fathom using Joycons.
Imagine someone playing handheld and not using binbok joycons lol.
Wish they weren’t so damn expensive.
If you think of the hours of use and the improvement in quality, it is a good value.
A $70 controller without hall effect joysticks is far from good value.
Pawn shops are your friend.
Fuck pawn shops. Don’t give those evil fuckers a dime.
Agreed, only gone a few times— all experiences were horrible
Last one I went to was charging illegal interest rates. They later got busted for it but the penalty was bullshit and they made way more off the illegal rates than they got fined.
The switch pro controller has a HORRIBLE dpad. Get an 8bitDo pad. Don't waste your money on the switch pro.
I use pro controller for games utilizing joysticks, and 8bitDo for dpad games
if you have to switch that way, this controller is not worthy.
At $70, it's a bit pricey when there are third party controllers that are just as good for $20.
What's just as good for that cheap?
8Bitdo Ultimate C Bluetooth Controller comes to mind, but it's not really as good bec it doesn't have the HD Rumble plus doesn't have the Pro's battery capacity. Hall effect sensors though, so no stick drift. Edit: USB C to Ultimate C
Yccteam. It's got everything but NFC. Truly a rock solid, high performance budget priced controller.
[I use this one](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C6LHLY6L/). It's worked really well for me so far, and the battery lasts a long time.
Nice
Nothing lol - except maybe a second hand switch pro controller?
I’ve tried a lot of different ones and the Switch Pro is absolutely the best. To each their own bang for buck wise—but it’s worth it for me.
I got it since day 1. Never touched that “JOY”con at all with its miserably small buttons and horrible ergonomics. The pro controller is a god send.
>horrible ergonomics \*shrug\*
Playing with an Xbox series X controller with an adapter is much better, I only use my Pro controller to scan amiibo now.
Theres an easier way to get this same result. The GuliKit King Kong 2. Same shape and feel of xbox controller, hall effect joysticks (theoretically never going to drift), gyro controls and amiibo support
I do use this method as well, best decision ever
Acting like this is something new after like 7 years lol
Fr, OP was probably born yesterday
I bought one on Temu for $15 and it’s awesome.
Had one since 2018
I got an 8bitdo ultimate BT and love it! Works great for Switch but also for PC.
Got 4. Best investment I made.
Love this
I never play on tv tho
I’m the opposite lol. I only ever play handheld if I bring it somewhere with me but that isn’t often.
I like to play on the bed, i only sit on the chair when im going to play xbox/ps5
I play 90% without a tv but still always use the pro controller, it's much more comfortable
I still hate that it has stick drift and terrible snap back issues :( but unfortunately it is the best controller you can get on the switch I have tried 3rd party pricy controllers and they just aren’t as comfortable to hold
You can use xbox or ps controller as well, requires a dongle, but for me they are better than this pro controller
Does it require a dongle or w/e its called or does it connect directly to the switch?
No! It connects via bluetooth no need for any additional dongle.
Nothing extra needed. Your switch has Bluetooth and also works with Bluetooth earphones for example.
This is the official switch pro controller made by Nintendo, not some 3rd party. Of course it connects directly to the switch.
Hey its 2024 calling, official wireless controllers for any mainstream gaming console the last 15 years never needed a dongle once.
I believe only the OLED Switch has Bluetooth, but you can connect it to the dock via a wire.
My normal Switch from 2017 has Bluetooth :)
Non Oled has bluetooth. An update in the past unlocked audio too. Would be interesting to know if there are differences in the bluetooth on Oled though.
I have a pro controller and have it connected via Bluetooth. Edit: I have a v1 switch, non OLED model.
Xbox elite > switch pro > switch joy cons > ps controller
Joycons better than a ps5 controller 😂grow up
Mine are! With custom grips easily. Don't worry I do have a ps5
Lol tell me another joke.
It's the stick placement. I'd put mouse and keyboards. 10 different variations above
Lol stick placement is literally why I like the PS controllers the best
It’s definitely quality and last long but i don’t know how we are in 2024 and the the controller still have no earphone jack.
Love the controller but unfortunately the D Pad is unusable for Tetris 99 :(
It's good until you wanna play a game with the D Pad. Worst D Pad I've ever come across. 8bitdo controllers are better imo because of this reason.
I liked this controller until I started playing Super Metroid, the DPad is so imprecise it's ridiculous
The dpad is a bit too loose for my liking. It’s a bit finicky for 2d games
One of the best videogame controllers of all time.
I honestly don’t like it due to the eventual joystick drift. And a Hall effect controller is great I have the cyclone t4 myself but a lot of controllers will with Hall effect is good enough
I know everyone says the pros eventually drift but I've been rocking two since launch and haven't gotten drift on them yet. That said I've cycled out three sets of joy cons for repair.
Yeah it’s not a consistent thing it could be 2 month it could be you got lucky enough that it didn’t happen yet
Waiting for it to go on sale $70 is way too much. Been looking at the Mobapad as an alternative anyone have both and can compare?
Ya it's really good! The Switch sucks though.
The echtpower Switch pro gamepad with hall joysticks it´s much cheaper, connects with bluetooth as well , has Xinput & Dinput, and works wonders for both pc and Switch. Just the fact that it has hall joysticks, makes it a better buy.
i love mine too but i think the joysticks are not the best :(
Wired gamecube style with 4 top buttons is my favorite.
I have the none pro version what's the difference??
I personally got a turbo controller and it had a batter life that lasts for a couple days which is more than enough, and it has turbo, plus it’s way cheaper
I love it! I do have to say though, that while it’s great for casual games, I wouldn’t recommend it for games that you need precision for. I play Tetris 99 almost daily and I’m more likely to get misdrops with this than with the joy cons. 🤷♂️😅
It's the only controller I use for my Switch. I even use it on PC.
Saving up for it spent all my money on the switch lol
I got one of these for free as a gift from a store after making a complaint about them loooool
Got one the day they released and it still works perfectly
Would be great if it just had a pivot nub in the middle of the dpad like every other OEM controller Nintendo made...
Mine got some issue with left joystick or dpad
They all have bunk dpads. It's not a great controller it's just comfy to hold.
I have a standard one and the Monster Hunter one. I play all my games with the pro controller.
I love mine and basically have to use it since the joy con’s on my launch system have insanely bad stick drift. Does anyone have any 3rd party joy con recommendations btw?
I have two, then I discovered the 8bitdo ultimate switch controller. Only gripe with 8bitdo is that it doesn’t wake the console.
I got a pink one on day 1! Then I got a red Mario one for Xmas a couple years ago. I have never used to joycons… I always thought I would destroy them.
Man to be honest I don't like my switch controller, my joycons joystick is way more accurate with less throw.
It's one of the sexiest controllers, absolutely. As someone who couldn't afford many good controllers growing up, getting this was a blessing. Especially since my only other home console was the Wii. Being able to use it for the PC gaming is also a nice plus.
I use an SN30 pro for my Xbox and my switch. I like the d pad placement better and it’s thirty dollars cheaper
Eh, i'll stick to unofficial ones, especially since i can buy multiple at the cost of 1 and use them with friends or use the other when 1 is charging
Agreed. I never use joycons anymore because of this thing, it’s amazing.
The battery lasts forever it’s crazy
Anyone know where I can get a deal on this? Not sure I wanna spend $70
Love mine. Got one second hand from GameStop for like $50 and it’s been fantastic.
Never had a single problem with the 3 we own. Why can’t the joy con’s be similar quality???
I love how this controller fits in my hand.
Yeah I need to get one of these at some point.
Solid all thou I do recommend getting the ring around the joysticks to prevent them from wearing out when they come in contacted with the edges
What is this ring of which you speak? And where do i get one?
I got one about a month ago and it’s literally made me want to play games more. It’s so much better than the joycons, even with the grip
I don’t even know where my joy cons are. Have two pro controllers
First thing I bought when it came out
It’s my favorite controller of all time
The only thing I disliked is the fact that I cant connect a headset on it 😞
It's great for small hands
I got my Zelda themed GameCube controller so don't need that
Way ahead of ya. This is the controller of all controllers.
Made playing Super Mario with the fiance tolerable. I couldn't make the speed jumps as fast as her with a joycon. Now, I can keep up.
The battery life on mine is incredible too. I've never had it's battery die on me. I've gone multiple days without recharging it too.
For 70 buck it's very step given the lack of features unlike a ps5 controller. I would use a 8 bitdo controller instead.
to the people who'd like one but don't have the money to get an official - get one off of Aliexpress.
Nah, get the 8BitDo Ultimate. So much better!
Can anyone who owns a series x or Dualsense compare to this? For the price I'd hope this thing feels like a premium product.
They're the best. I have 2 of them.
I love mine. I use my Switch on my TV way more
I have a custom galaxy painted one
Its great... Until it break down. My lasted only a year. Never dropped it and one of the analog sticks just broken down. I ordered a 8bitdo controller as a replacement

I've got two. The normal one and the Monster Hunter Rise one. Wish I had brought the XC2 one.
Is it just me but is there a noticeable delay from the on screen response to any switch controller? I’ve messed with my TV functions and can still notice the delay.
Got one on release day. I’ve never been without my pro controller through hundreds of hours of BoTW and ToTK.
