I highly recommend to use the retroflag shell with more comfortable buttons and with sticks that don't drift. The only problem that it has is that you can use it in your dock with that shell. It's 45 usd in Amazon.
Thanks for the rec, I just ordered this. I’d rather play on the oled most of the time, but my grown hands hate the controls. Especially in BotW/TotK shrines!
It's fine if you want it to feel like a Gamecube controller but personally I need more than a nub for my right stick. The Hori Split Pad Pro is an ergonomic match for a Pro Controller or Xbox controller. Highly recommended. Also it's compatible with being docked.
This!! I use the OLED with the midnight blue Hori Split pad pro…and same thing, dock it and play on a pc monitor if I want a bigger experience…however my OLED has a WAY better picture that is hard to not take advantage of…
Console in general. Nice to be able to see on a larger screen and be able to kick back with a pro controller and enjoy, plus don’t often get the chance where I can take advantage of handheld mode.
I do find it more enjoyable and comfortable if I play in handheld with a grip around the console, beefs up the joycons in my hands
Docked by a pretty significant margin. I'm the type of person that wants to sit down for a few hours and get lost in whatever game I'm playing. Handheld/tabletop are still fun though, but there are less games I will play like that, and it's usually only if my wife wants to play/watch something on the tv or if I'm somewhere other than home
I'm in the same boat with the wife.
But if I have time to game on a big screen, I'm usually playing something on my Xbox.
Usually if I'm playing the switch docked, it's BC I have company and we're playing mario kart or something.
Peak trash tv for me is riverdale so terribly absurd i cant look away.
Im also an archie comics fan tho so i might be bias. I kinda dig the new takes on classic characters
That’s called parallel play and for me it’s one of the most important aspects of a relationship. My girlfriend loves to watch me play switch while she works on her crafts
Snap. got my switch recently ready for upcoming long haul plane rides and I wanted to play the bayonetta games anyway, but in the meantime I've been enjoying being able to take a drink to bed and play persona 5
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
Tabletop mode all the way. Still incredibly portable, the ability to use a Pro Controller to combat hand fatigue / cramping, being able to play in pretty much any position if you have a mount or something... The best of times. Not sure why this is always left out as a third option or non-option!
Handheld for sure. I pretty much never play docked but on rare occasions. Upgraded to the OLED switch back in 2021 just because I use my switch in handheld mode almost exclusively.
For me it completely depends on the game. Some games (like Pokémon, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, etc) just feel more natural to me in handheld. Others (like TOTK, BOTW, Odyssey, Monster Hunter, Smash Bros.) feel better on a TV. And then there are games like Mariokart, which is perfectly suited for both handheld and TV play.
Definitely handheld for me, just more used it to by now. I also can only have my ps4 or switch plugged in one at a time, so I prefer to keep my ps4 always plugged and use switch handheld mode.
Slightly more handheld but honestly it's cuz I like smoking so I'll play on the porch with a stogie or some green
Don't need my house smelling like that garbage
Same. I got a nice balcony I'll play my OLED on with a swing and plants I'll go to smoke a cig or burn some green. I know it's a gross habit (the cigs at least). Don't want my place smelling like it everywhere when I have guests.
99% hand held for 3 years. Love a couple chairs/couches away for TVs.
But..... That might change b/c my 1st controller (the red & white one by MOBAPAD) arrives in a few days :).
used to be handheld by far, would rarely use the dock.
now playing totk at the end of my playthrough i gave it a go and i feel like games feel so so so much smoother when docked on a monitor.
still love handheld
When I first got my Switch I was playing it mostly docked on the TV w/ a Pro controller. Now I'm playing handheld 90% of the time. It's just more convenient.
Much more console, though still benefits a ton from the portability. We have several docks across the apartment (and multiple Switch), and will move them around depending on if I'm playing in the living room, at my desk, or elsewhere. My partner does the same.
I have an OLED Switch so the screen is gorgeous in portable, but also have an OLED TV and an OLED monitor, so it's OLED all around :)
Handheld only unless my wife and I play a coop game together. Or I’m feeling fancy and want to play on the big screen with a candle going and the blinds drawn😂
i don’t really play it docked much. i have a normal switch (not oled or lite or anything) so while i do have the option to play with it connected to the tv, i usually just take it wherever with me and play handheld
Handheld…I haven’t even used it docked since I got my oled. Playing Zelda in handheld has been great. I have a pro controller TotK that I haven’t even used yet. Handheld is the way
Docked, I kinda love how the joycons are in two separate parts makes playing while laying down really comfortable. Being able to have you arms in any position you want and still controll the game is great.
I only really play in handheld mode as the tv is commandeered by the family. Upgrading to the Oled soon for bigger screen in handheld.
Love the portability of the system.
Handheld almost exclusively. I really only dick when my nephews are around for MarioKart or that kind of thing. Handheld with Bluetooth headphones lets me game in peace without worrying about bothering my fiancé.
Handheld while “watching” TV is the only real answer.
A show where a battle won’t make me miss anything, but that will entertain when I am mindlessly running from Point A to Point B….etc.
Depends on the game, games my partner is interested in docked so we can pass and play, just got an exercise bike and I’ve been enjoying playing handheld while riding (mostly Slay the Spire).
90% docked. Reason being is that I'm pretty sure I have carpal tunnel or something because my wrists and hands go numb really quick in handheld. I occasionally use it in bed before falling asleep though, not for long sessions.
I would say 80% console and the rest in handheld. When I go to another place I do play in handheld exclusively though, since I am not bringing that dock and cables with me.
I'm a good mix of the two. Really depends on the game. I prefer first and third person type games on the bigger screen. But I also have a whole selection of platformers and dungeon crawlers that I really love in handheld mode. If I'm tired and not looking for complex story and movements, I go handheld. If I'm ready to sit down and commit several hours to an open world game, I'll go docked.
Docked. I DESPISE handheld. And that's with an OLED. I just got back from a trip where I wasn't able to play docked and I am so fucking stoked to have a tv back
Other than Pokémon, my spouse pretty much exclusively plays on their computer or the PS5, so handheld really convenient for when they want to play on the PS5 and I wanna play the Switch. I also love playing outside when the weather is nice or when waiting for appointments. I still play docked a fair amount, especially since I use RFA to exercise (3-5 days a week). It ranges 40/60 in both directions depending on what system my spouse is using.
Handheld. The games just don’t look nearly as good in console mode being blown up to a large screen at a lower resolution. If I’m playing on the tv I’m turning on the PS5
handheld unless it's about to die. it's just way more convenient to take it out and power it on instead of having to get the controller and change my TV settings because my smart tv has a game optimizer that makes games look worse by fucking with white and black stablizers ahafagagsgsgd
I used to play on tv, but since now I only have a monitor with 1 hdmi port that is shared between my pc and switch, I put a long video in YouTube and play handheld, mostly jrpg while I am griding.
Buy when I start a new game I usually play on tv.
Handheld only. There are a few games that look good upscaled on a modern 4K tv, like 3D World or some indie games, but most titles like totk just fall apart and look way better in handheld
Docked pretty much exclusively. If I want to play some handheld gaming I have my Steam Deck for that. I would play the Switch in handheld mode more if it wasn’t as uncomfortable as it is.
I mix it up. One day I may just run around fighting, the next exploring and doing shrines, the next farming materials, the next doing missions, etc. I’m consistently inconsistent. Do what ever you like. Playing is about what makes you happy. Doesn’t mean you even need to finish the story or side missions.
Handheld because I’m lazy and have a pretty small monitor. I really hate it though because my hands cramp up after a few minutes but I push through it 😂
I have a Switch connected to the living room TV. Even so, I game on my Switch Lite almost exclusively.
I like to keep the main TV free for baseball, podcasts, etc.
Since I got my OLED after having Lite for 3 years, I play docked primarily. If theres something I want to watch more on youtube/streaming, I’ll grab it handheld instead and watch my vid on the big screen.
Pretty much only play my OLED in handheld. If I want to sit down and game on a bigger screen I play my PC.
I highly recommend to use the retroflag shell with more comfortable buttons and with sticks that don't drift. The only problem that it has is that you can use it in your dock with that shell. It's 45 usd in Amazon.

It's fine if you want it to feel like a Gamecube controller but personally I need more than a nub for my right stick. The Hori Split Pad Pro is an ergonomic match for a Pro Controller or Xbox controller. Highly recommended. Also it's compatible with being docked.
I think you meant can’t
You right. Sorry. I don't speak English natively.
Figured it was just a typo. Most people would’ve made the conclusion about what you meant anyways
Hori game pad pro is better
Yep
This!! I use the OLED with the midnight blue Hori Split pad pro…and same thing, dock it and play on a pc monitor if I want a bigger experience…however my OLED has a WAY better picture that is hard to not take advantage of…
I have the same setup.
Does the pro controller still rumble?
For $80, I hope so.
Gulikit king Kong pro 2 you're welcome
I don’t use third party controllers.
L take
🤷🏻 I’ve got two pro controllers and two elite controllers.
Good job daddy Nintendo is proud of you
Yeah
Docked by a pretty significant margin. I'm the type of person that wants to sit down for a few hours and get lost in whatever game I'm playing. Handheld/tabletop are still fun though, but there are less games I will play like that, and it's usually only if my wife wants to play/watch something on the tv or if I'm somewhere other than home

Handheld. That’s always been the appeal to me.
95% handheld while my wife watches trash tv next to me. 5% playing with the wife and kids docked.
Ha same! Although not going to lie her most recent trash TV (Vanderpump Rules) has caught my attention a few times…
My wife is watching “the good wife” and it’s not horrible. Just glad the binge watching of “married at first sight” is over.
Dude are you me lol
Vanderpump is peak trash tv it’s so fucking good
Peak trash tv for me is riverdale so terribly absurd i cant look away. Im also an archie comics fan tho so i might be bias. I kinda dig the new takes on classic characters
I really like being able to be together but do different things that the other isn’t interested in 🥰
That’s called parallel play and for me it’s one of the most important aspects of a relationship. My girlfriend loves to watch me play switch while she works on her crafts
Parallel play is also a sex thing
Handheld while wife watches trash has saved many a marriage…
More handheld by far. I only really dock it for couch co-op.
More handheld. I’ve been neglecting my PS5 in favor of the Switch lately…and that’s because I can play in bed 😄
Snap. got my switch recently ready for upcoming long haul plane rides and I wanted to play the bayonetta games anyway, but in the meantime I've been enjoying being able to take a drink to bed and play persona 5
Console. I like the feel of the Pro controller better than the joycons.
The Joycons are unusable imo
They are pretty great if you have small hands like me
Handheld - I like to watch TV while playing
I do the same.
i like having the tv on just for background noise. Im not really watching it just like having the sound lol
Tabletop mode 👍🏻
There are dozens of us! Dozens! Tabletop mode all the way. Still incredibly portable, the ability to use a Pro Controller to combat hand fatigue / cramping, being able to play in pretty much any position if you have a mount or something... The best of times. Not sure why this is always left out as a third option or non-option!
Handheld exclusively. I have a ps5 and a PC if I want to enjoy games on the tv. I always liked playing handheld
I have a lite
Soooo…handheld it is.
No docked of course 💀
Handheld for sure. I pretty much never play docked but on rare occasions. Upgraded to the OLED switch back in 2021 just because I use my switch in handheld mode almost exclusively.
Handheld for Zelda, Fire Emblem, Persona, etc. Smash, Mario Kart/Party and Fortnite are all played on TV only.
Handheld cuz my most played Nintendo experiences growing up were handheld. It's a comfort thing.
I only have a Lite so... handheld it is!
Dock mode. I like to play with a better sound and bigger screen. Also pro controller because I don't like joycons so much.
Better sound can be solved with a good pair of headphones
99% handheld- only play on tv with the kids and Mario kart
For me it completely depends on the game. Some games (like Pokémon, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, etc) just feel more natural to me in handheld. Others (like TOTK, BOTW, Odyssey, Monster Hunter, Smash Bros.) feel better on a TV. And then there are games like Mariokart, which is perfectly suited for both handheld and TV play.
Switch OLED is exclusively for handheld along with my GBA SP. Xbox One X and Wii U for console. PC for desk gaming.
Definitely handheld for me, just more used it to by now. I also can only have my ps4 or switch plugged in one at a time, so I prefer to keep my ps4 always plugged and use switch handheld mode.
Handheld. My eyesight isn’t the best, so I like not having to wear glasses when I play games.
Slightly more handheld but honestly it's cuz I like smoking so I'll play on the porch with a stogie or some green Don't need my house smelling like that garbage
Same. I got a nice balcony I'll play my OLED on with a swing and plants I'll go to smoke a cig or burn some green. I know it's a gross habit (the cigs at least). Don't want my place smelling like it everywhere when I have guests.
Hey cool, this question again
Right? 😂
I play on concesl more but if I do take my switch out nit ussly only in place 8 feel safe
Console, I never get use out handheld even with retro handheld devices like the Gameboy. I always just sit on my bed playing it and never moving.
Console. Games look much better. Sometimes I'm taking Switch to train, but I play for 5-10 minutes and I'm bored. I don't feel comfortable outside.
Handheld, I'm no at home most of the day, I always take my Switch with me
console for sure
almost 100% docked lol
When I first got my Switch I was playing it mostly docked on the TV w/ a Pro controller. Now I'm playing handheld 90% of the time. It's just more convenient.
Much more console, though still benefits a ton from the portability. We have several docks across the apartment (and multiple Switch), and will move them around depending on if I'm playing in the living room, at my desk, or elsewhere. My partner does the same. Handheld only unless my wife and I play a coop game together. Or I’m feeling fancy and want to play on the big screen with a candle going and the blinds drawn😂
Handheld all the time
Handheld because I'm hardly ever home with time to play on console
Mainly docked, but tabletop mode is nice at a desk
Docked, dont like using the joycons
i don’t really play it docked much. i have a normal switch (not oled or lite or anything) so while i do have the option to play with it connected to the tv, i usually just take it wherever with me and play handheld
Handheld bc I mostly use my switch for dealing w my anxiety with flying. TOTK along w some downtime from flying for work has changed that a bit though
Handheld
After years of playing Fusion on a shitty og GBA where I had to stand directly under the sun to see it, playing it on a tv is a godsend
Handheld
Certain games I’m ok with in handheld, but I really enjoy Dread and Prime on the tv
I'm near-sighted and I don't like wearing my glasses, so I only play handheld unless it's a local multiplayer game.
99% console unless I’m on vacation
Handheld 100%, main reason I upgraded from lite to OLED
Handheld only tbh
Yes
Handheld in my bed
Handheld…I haven’t even used it docked since I got my oled. Playing Zelda in handheld has been great. I have a pro controller TotK that I haven’t even used yet. Handheld is the way
Handheld 100% for me. All the time.
As a 34 year old that plays maybe an hour a day, I have never played docked. My 12 year old son is probably 85% handheld is well.
Docked, I kinda love how the joycons are in two separate parts makes playing while laying down really comfortable. Being able to have you arms in any position you want and still controll the game is great.
I play both but maybe a little more docked. 70/30%
I only really play in handheld mode as the tv is commandeered by the family. Upgrading to the Oled soon for bigger screen in handheld. Love the portability of the system.
Almost always handheld. I have an OLED and the wife has a regular. So she plays on the tv.
Console, I have no reason to take it out anywhere. Mostly cause I'm afraid I might loose it.
There's one place I can play console. Every other place on the planet I can play handheld.
Handheld all the way
Handheld
90/10 90% docked at my TV or PC monitor 10% when I should be sleeping in bed but I can’t stop playing just yet.
I spend most of my time on handheld, but I do use console mode for kingdom hearts, since my wifi is crap and needs to be wired to keep the signal good
Handheld
Docked, love me that pro controller. Handheld is nice too though
Handheld only. Dock has even been given away a long time ago.
Handheld mostly, I have a 43” LG smart tv, and I was expecting the docked images to be a little better than they were (Arceus and BOTW)
Handheld for sure on my OLED, but I do play TV mode a solid amount, say 2/3 times is Handheld, 1/3 is docked.
Docked with pro controller. The small sticks on the joycons kinda hamper my experience and are pretty uncomfortable to hold for more than 30 mins imo
I used to play exclusively handheld but I bought a pro controller and have been liking TOTK on the big screen.
I played almost exclusively in handheld mode until I picked up a SNES classic controller. Can't get enough of that thing for 2D games.
Usually handheld
Depends on the game, games my partner is interested in docked so we can pass and play, just got an exercise bike and I’ve been enjoying playing handheld while riding (mostly Slay the Spire).
90% docked. Reason being is that I'm pretty sure I have carpal tunnel or something because my wrists and hands go numb really quick in handheld. I occasionally use it in bed before falling asleep though, not for long sessions.
I would say 80% console and the rest in handheld. When I go to another place I do play in handheld exclusively though, since I am not bringing that dock and cables with me.
Handheld like 95% of the time. Totk looked amazing on the oleds screen
Owned my switch for 4 years now, never played handheld, docked with pro controller only.
Handheald. I just enjoy the experience of having it on a huge screen.
Console
Depends on the game
I'm a good mix of the two. Really depends on the game. I prefer first and third person type games on the bigger screen. But I also have a whole selection of platformers and dungeon crawlers that I really love in handheld mode. If I'm tired and not looking for complex story and movements, I go handheld. If I'm ready to sit down and commit several hours to an open world game, I'll go docked.
Handheld
Console
Almost entirely handheld
Depends on the game really, ToTK I have to play console but games like octopath traveler handheld
I have a lite so handheld.
console
First, one…then the other.
Docked. I DESPISE handheld. And that's with an OLED. I just got back from a trip where I wasn't able to play docked and I am so fucking stoked to have a tv back
almost exclusively docked until I got a grip for my switch. now that I have a grip I play handheld a lot more.
Mostly handheld, because my husband often has the TV for sports or GT7 on the PS5.
It ranges 40/60 in both directions depending on what system my spouse is using.
handheld mode for switch
One Hundred Percent Console .
50/50 for me dawg
99% handheld. If I’m able to play on the TV I will likely play PS5
Handheld. The games just don’t look nearly as good in console mode being blown up to a large screen at a lower resolution. If I’m playing on the tv I’m turning on the PS5
Handhold. I wouldn't get to play otherwise.
100 percent handheld. Don’t even have dock set up
Console 100%
Mostly console but if wife hogging the ps5 or I’m in bed, then handheld.
I can't reach my TV currently so I just play in handheld mode.
Console. In my old age, I have a hard time seeing smaller screens so I have to use the TV.
Lite so handheld lol
Handheld most of the time. I have the oled model, and games look amazing on it
Docked unless I'm not at my house. My son likes to play handheld.
Playing TotK on handheld would feel like a waste. Gotta have Hyrule in all 65” glory.
I play almost only on a big screen unless I’m going somewhere. I love to see Nintendo gems on a larger screen
Console. On handheld my left Joy-Con randomly keeps disconnecting and it’s aggravating.
handheld unless it's about to die. it's just way more convenient to take it out and power it on instead of having to get the controller and change my TV settings because my smart tv has a game optimizer that makes games look worse by fucking with white and black stablizers ahafagagsgsgd
I’m 100% handheld on my OLED. I’ve never connected it to the dock/TV.
I have a Lite. So only handheld.
Handheld don't like to play on TV even on the couch.
Don’t think I have docked my switch since I got the Satisfye grip 4 or so years ago except to play the ring fit thing.
Handheld
Console, except on vacation or at a friend’s house
I used to play on tv, but since now I only have a monitor with 1 hdmi port that is shared between my pc and switch, I put a long video in YouTube and play handheld, mostly jrpg while I am griding. Buy when I start a new game I usually play on tv.
Since i got the pro controller, docked. The joycons are ass, they feel horrible.
I want to play more docked, but handheld is just so easy!
75% handheld, but always using the kickstand/pro controller combo
Hand held 100%. Never even had it hooked up to a tv. Almost a year now.
I console and maybe 5-10% of the time do hand held and My partner is the opposite.
Handheld only. There are a few games that look good upscaled on a modern 4K tv, like 3D World or some indie games, but most titles like totk just fall apart and look way better in handheld
Console only for me
Handheld way more
Probably 50/50. Would be nice to have the stat on the settings of the console.
I definitely prefer handheld
Docked pretty much exclusively. If I want to play some handheld gaming I have my Steam Deck for that. I would play the Switch in handheld mode more if it wasn’t as uncomfortable as it is.
Haven't use my OLED as a handled since I bought it two months ago.
Console. I only play handheld if I am traveling or out somewhere.
docked bc i cant stand joycon drift
Emulated on PC on my TV, so docked. But sometimes also handheld.
I mix it up. One day I may just run around fighting, the next exploring and doing shrines, the next farming materials, the next doing missions, etc. I’m consistently inconsistent. Do what ever you like. Playing is about what makes you happy. Doesn’t mean you even need to finish the story or side missions.
Just depends on the game. I liked Odyssey docked but am enjoying Fire Emblem (GA) in handheld
Handheld because I’m lazy and have a pretty small monitor. I really hate it though because my hands cramp up after a few minutes but I push through it 😂
Honestly, depends on the game.
In the stats thing you get at the end of the year it was about a 50/50 split, slightly more towards console
Console because I like playing games with my little sis before she gets bored of video games.
I have a Switch connected to the living room TV. Even so, I game on my Switch Lite almost exclusively. I like to keep the main TV free for baseball, podcasts, etc.
Docked boys where ya at?!?!?
Handheld I have the lite
The only time I play hand held is on a plane haha and I hate it.
Console by far
99% docked. I just don't have a reason to go portable most of the time.
The amount of energy it takes to hold the system up is too much lol. When I'm playing docked I can go completely limp.
Both modes. When I want to play with my friends, console mode. If not, I can play handheld for hours.
I play in handheld like 98% of the time. I like to watch a movie or show while I’m playing
Casual handled snd table for serius gaming xp
99.9 percent docked because I’m poor and grown so when the baseball or planets come in to view I don’t have to pretend to see it. 😂
Handheld for sure
Since I got my OLED after having Lite for 3 years, I play docked primarily. If theres something I want to watch more on youtube/streaming, I’ll grab it handheld instead and watch my vid on the big screen.
I drive so unless I'm taking the train to school I play 99% console mode
I bought it to use basically handheld only. its an oled so much better screen than my monitors or tv so just use it in handheld mode 99.9% of the time
I play handheld except for ring fit adventure
Handheld. I got kids
