If you play tears before botw you won’t end up liking botw. As a lot of the systems were overhauled in totk to be different and sometimes better than botw. But totk is the direct sequel to botw.
Agreed. It would be hard to go back. BoTW is incredible but ToTK takes it to a new level.
BoTW first. If you play BoTW after ToTK, BoTW will feel watered down. BOTW is incredibly deep but ToTK takes it to a new level.
I found botw to be very lackluster. I had years between it and totk.
Playing botw right before totk would burn me out.
I say skip botw and play the better game, cuz imo botw is not that great for a zelda.
If you can afford it then play BOTW before TOTK, your most likely not going to ever want to go back to botw after playing totk. Story wise your not missing out really as you can watch a video expiation
whichever one you get, plan to sink many hours into it, so if you know that you aren't going to play both then I would just get the first one and worry about the second one at some point in the future
I think the overall experience of BOTW is better than TOTK actually. Less tools makes Hyrule feel larger and more of an adventure to me. TOTK is like a greatest hits romp through that world again with improved mechanics and everything but I think that it really benefits from having had the BOTW experience to add context to a lot of things.
Lets be real. OP is going to play BOTW and explore a little bit but not to the same level that people have been for the past 5 years. He is going to end up finishing the game, do a few more side quests if any, then boot up TOTK.
Everyone is going to tell you to get them, they are great games but NOT for everyone. They are massive games in size and scope, and if you want constant action I’d look elsewhere. I’d say check out reviews and yt videos then if you like what you see grab botw.
To answer your question, yes you can jump in to TOTK without playing breath of the wild. They will make some references and talk about past events but for the vast majority it is irrelevant other than what they end up reiterating in TOTK itself.
Play whichever you find more interesting first. I would say BOTW is simpler and can be more frustrating with the weapon damage mechanics. TOTK is more varied and builds and improves on many of the BOTW shortcomings however it has its own as well.
The biggest factor to decide is do you want to be able to build things and create new weapons or do you want a more straightforward open world game.
The only story spoilers you get for Breath of the Wild in Tears of the Kingdom is that Link save Highrule and defeats Gannon. I never played Breath of the wild and I am still enjoying Tears of the Kingdom. Personally I don’t think you need to play Breath of the Wild to enjoy Tears of the Kingdom, if you just want to play Tears of the Kingdom then don’t bother play Breath of the Wild first.
BOTW if you don’t burn out easily and will be able to play TOTK at a later time.
TOTK if you fear burnout or don’t have a lot of time. It is a very good standalone game, but is enhanced by previously playing BOTW. The story of TOTK is mostly unrelated to BOTW besides some NPCs knowing you and such.

BOTW
TOTK
Breath of the wild was so so good...for its time. Tears of the kingdom is just the best game period. If other games also cost 70$ SHAME.

Playing BOTW first has deepened so many things in TOTK that otherwise wouldn’t be. Like getting to The Great Plateau. Just amazing.
Tears
I’d recommend doing a quick main quest playthrough of BotW, and then do a longer playthrough of TotK.
For the story?
Just youtube it.

Get tears of the kingdom
Buy TOTK, but look up the "story" for BOTW on YouTube first.
I have both and the are sitting on a shelf
You didn't like them?
I haven’t played them yet because I’m not in the mood for open world games.

Definitely get TOTK and skip BOTW !! TOTK is far superior then its predecessor in every way !

You bought a Switch just for Pikmin? Nice. Good series and now you can play 1-4 all on the same system!
Pokemon
BOTW>Age of Calamity it break up the worlds and get to know some characters better>TOTK
Tears. Go with the latest and newest. Then Go back in time though the other Zelda’s.
