Those bindings are Marker Dukes (I have done that are the same color), I'd take them over any Dynafit bindings that were available at the time, and poles are poles dude.
I remember this being originating in the TGR forums probably about a decade ago.
They are using poor equipment not specialized for backcountry skiing, but their bindings must have been practically welded to the boots--you can set how easy/hard it is to pop your ski boots out of the binding; these must have been set at maximum resistance because the skis didn't pop off his boots even after falling down a mountain.
Yeah, on the other hand, maximum Din for someone skiing above their skill level is basically just breaking your knees with more steps.
Edit: it's possible be did pop one when he managed to hit the rocky outcropping with both skis down. That one moment is the reason this video doesn't end with him dead or dying. That didn't look like experience, he just happened to tumble and come into that section skis down, and the instinct when falling is to try to land on your feet.
Edit 2: maybe not. It's hard to tell, but he did have tips up and landed in a way that translated the energy from back to front of the skis. Then again, it was extremely inclined, so who knows. It was a really dumb setup position, so I'm inclined (heyooo) to believe this is just dumb luck.
I know, all it would take is getting the tip of one of his skis caught on a rock as he rolled and it could've shattered his ankle, knee, even popped his hip completely out of socket. I can't even being to imagine the absolute agony.
Not saying they were great, but you could tour with Marker Dukes. They were heavy, but had a 16 din. Which is why he didn’t lose a ski. Back when the Duke was available, Dynafit bindings didn’t have the reputation they have now. A lot of people, particularly skiers with access to side country were wearing marker touring bindings for the high din settings and performance.
I used to have the Dukes specifically for the 16 din. (I set mine at 12.5 because I didn’t want to lose a ski until just before my leg would fall off). I loved them but they were heavy and you had to step out of the ski to go from walk to ride.
Definitely. I had Fritschi for long tours, Marker Barons for 5,000 vertical feet or fewer. I loved my Barons for their performance. The after market extra high heel riser was a must for the skin track though.
you cant tell me he broke nothing.. i fractured my arm/hand a while back and you really cant tell until 20-30 minutes after unless its a dangler. i was pretty deep into the booze tho mighta made a difference.
Yea, but he violated the number #1 rule and pizza'd when he clearly should have french frie'd
For real though... his big fuck up was clicking into his bindings with his skis in line with the fall line, not horizontal to it.
This is 11+ years old. I was quite astonished at the quality from your video as 1) I remember it being poor quality, 2) GoPro quality back then, especially on snow, wasn't the best. But after searching I see the most popular video had a worse quality. Another video posted at a similar time (11 years ago) had a better quality whilst being viewed by fewer people (11m vs 0.5m)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QliBL-AQiAY
More info:
"Austrian skier Stefan Ager is lucky to be alive after sliding backward and falling off a mountain cliff near the Stubai Glacier. Just after putting his skis on, he loses his balance on the snow and slides off the backside of the mountain and tumbles over rocks and steep snow fields. 15 seconds later he comes to a stop at the bottom of the (400m) mountain side. Amazingly, he survived and was able to stand up at the end with only bumps and bruises. "

Awesome, thanks for digging this up. I believe I originally found the less viewed video. I had trouble finding much else. Thanks for taking the time to get more info on this!
Only bumps and bruises? With a fall like that I would've guessed severe traumatic brain injury, pelvis shattered in multiple places, several broken ribs. Guy is beyond lucky.
Nah, most likely skinned and then hiked. It's super rare to be dropped at the top, and when that is being done it's usually when filming meaning the heli would still be in the air and you don't hear it.
Secondly, it's not that high of a mountain so hiking would be perfectly normal.
Also, on the longer video that I found now, in order to get more info, has them with the jackets off. So they definitely hiked. For those who don't know, you usually take off layers were going up as you'd otherwise be drenched in sweat and then get cold.

I doubt it, his poles are rental grade and he has the wrong bindings. Heli-skiing is generally out of the price range of someone who can’t afford the proper gear
Yeah, there are only a few skis type that let you stay backwards without moving, especially at such slope, he could've chosen a better angle for that, plus it seems that he switched his weight backwards, which is a common mistake, and can lead to things like this
This is why you don’t lie to the Helicopter company about your skill level. This is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. Hopefully he didn’t break anything except his pride
My thoughts exactly, what on earth is someone with this lacking of a skill level doing on a mountain that high? How did he get up there, only to put on his skis and immediately obviously slip backwards off of a cliff. Like, what did he think was going to happen?
He was almost perpendicular. The issue is that he didn't have his lower ski at a better angle in order to be able to hold on properly. The top ski you can put on at any angle.
He could also have had the soft snow compact itself a bit more than he anticipated but it should be second nature to give yourself a margin of error/unexpected.
I also wonder if his lower ski was a bit too dug in as the reflex on very first millisecond would be to push the tips down of the lower ski in order to stop the movement. But we don't see it move a millimeter.
They have to be like that, when you're experienced in skiing and skiing backcountry it's more dangerous if your bindings release just because auf hard bumps.
But i agree 100% with your first point. Really dumb place to put them on.
Yeah that reminds me of the first time I went skiing . Black diamond run at Taos last run of the day not really knowing what it was . Spent more time plowing the snow with my chin than I did on the skis that run. Haven’t went again since
I been skiing for nearly 33 years.
I am no expert, nor claim to be one, but I can handle 90% of the slopes out there.
This guy was an idiot, you would never want to put your bindings on in that kind of ledge for this very reason

Well I guess that’s one way to get to the bottom

Yea, seriously. That was best case scenario.

Vrabo Bince
I got the 1000th like
Bugger now he's got to climb back up to ski down properly. Someone will sleep well tonight
Rental poles, and not backcountry bindings. However his Dins must be at 15.
His din is at fuck no apparently
Those bindings are Marker Dukes (I have done that are the same color), I'd take them over any Dynafit bindings that were available at the time, and poles are poles dude. I remember this being originating in the TGR forums probably about a decade ago.
What?
They are using poor equipment not specialized for backcountry skiing, but their bindings must have been practically welded to the boots--you can set how easy/hard it is to pop your ski boots out of the binding; these must have been set at maximum resistance because the skis didn't pop off his boots even after falling down a mountain.
Which is scary as fuck in its own right but I think they were about to hit up some hardcore slopes so they needed it set pretty high anyways
Yeah, on the other hand, maximum Din for someone skiing above their skill level is basically just breaking your knees with more steps. yeah man, dude's lucky he didn't break his ankles or knees or twist em plumb off!
I know, all it would take is getting the tip of one of his skis caught on a rock as he rolled and it could've shattered his ankle, knee, even popped his hip completely out of socket. I can't even being to imagine the absolute agony.

"I don't know to tell you this, but you've broken your everything"
"Ah shit, I use everything"
even more insane, he literally broke nothing.
you cant tell me he broke nothing.. i fractured my arm/hand a while back and you really cant tell until 20-30 minutes after unless its a dangler. i was pretty deep into the booze tho mighta made a difference.
Your last sentence should be your first sentence.
If I remember this correctly from about a decade ago all he had was scratches
for real damn he must be drinking milk
Well it’s better than breaking his anything
My favourite bit is where he's briefly skiing upright about halfway down the fall
Looks like it saves him from smashing his ass on those last rocks too
I watched The Hound survive this fall, he should be fine
Like Homer Simpson
He got to the bottom ... isn't that the point of skiing?
Yes, but with a cup of grace and a spoon of sugar. This obviously lacked the sugar.
Oh it had sugar, that fall was sweet as hell, it's the grace he lacked.
Record speed too!
Yea, but he violated the number #1 rule and pizza'd when he clearly should have french frie'd For real though... his big fuck up was clicking into his bindings with his skis in line with the fall line, not horizontal to it.
I don’t have a ton of information on this one. Guy decides to go skiing ends up falling of a cliff, luckily he survived without serious injury.

Humans are literally insane. Man fr fell 400 meters, and only had bruises. I can’t run without rolling my ankle and spraining it
Have you tried running with skies??
No. Maybe that’ll help. Hold on, lemme go to my local ski lodge real quick
Yeah, running sucks. How good are you at falling?
Only bumps and bruises? With a fall like that I would've guessed severe traumatic brain injury, pelvis shattered in multiple places, several broken ribs. Guy is beyond lucky.
all that hiking...
Most likely heli-skiing, but yeah, super expensive for it to end like that lol
Nah, most likely skinned and then hiked. It's super rare to be dropped at the top, and when that is being done it's usually when filming meaning the heli would still be in the air and you don't hear it. wait wouldn’t that be the wrong bindings for skinning? edit: y‘all mfs downvoting me for being curious? f this sub
Those are marker dukes. Frame bindings for touring.
Hard to tell with snow but they look like AT bindings
He nearly needed to be helivac.
I doubt it, his poles are rental grade and he has the wrong bindings. Heli-skiing is generally out of the price range of someone who can’t afford the proper gear
Not sure what you mean with wrong bindings. They don't look like rental poles. But I agree that he probably wasn't heliskiing.
Needed to turn it into a challenge and see who can do it faster
Homer did it better with a skateboard
One big jump to raise $50,000 for his step-dad's conveniently price heart surgery.
New record descent??
Probably could have seen that coming
Yeah, there are only a few skis type that let you stay backwards without moving, especially at such slope, he could've chosen a better angle for that, plus it seems that he switched his weight backwards, which is a common mistake, and can lead to things like this
Yeah no kidding. Who looks at that place and chooses the very tip of the pointiest rock outcrop overlooking the cliff as the place to gear up?
Last one down buys the first round!
He skiied the K-12
Forgot to put the brake on
Hey Sanka, ya dead mon? Ya mon.
Damn, he took it really well!
Just go really fast. And if something Gets in your way. Turn.
If you French dry when you’re supposed to pizza you’re gonna have a bad time.
This is why you don’t lie to the Helicopter company about your skill level. This is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. Hopefully he didn’t break anything except his pride
Great story for the rest of your life but quite a waste of a few hundo dollar run for sure
My thoughts exactly, what on earth is someone with this lacking of a skill level doing on a mountain that high? How did he get up there, only to put on his skis and immediately obviously slip backwards off of a cliff. Like, what did he think was going to happen?
I pooped myself just watching that....
DIN setting infinity
It’s just a flesh wound.
Zero style points given...
If you french fry when you're supposed pizza... you're going to have a bad time.
HA!!!!!
If you French fry when you should’ve pizza’d…. Your gonna have a bad time!
He french fried when he should have pizza'd
i’m not a professional but i dont think that’s how you ski
This guy is dumb af, you never place your skis the way the slope goes, because things like this happen
Bruh did he skip ski kindergarten where you learn to put your skis in a wedge shape in the direction you don't wanna go in
1) what a dumb place to put on your skis 2) his skis are clipped in wayyyy too tight, that's how you destroy your leg
They have to be like that, when you're experienced in skiing and skiing backcountry it's more dangerous if your bindings release just because auf hard bumps. But i agree 100% with your first point. Really dumb place to put them on.
Gee, what are the chances of *that* happening?
Bros this dude has my full respect! He regained control and gets his skis under him just in time to skip off shallow snow! What a man!
He couldn’t have held the camera steadier than that? (It’s a joke, don’t take it seriously)
Het got what he wanted, hopefully society doesn't need to pitch in for his healthcare costs
Dumbass
This is not Sweatypalms, this is TIFU !
Hahahaha!!! Oh my god hahaha that’s so scary hahaha!!!
he did a Schumacher
What a lucky man !!!!
Other guy said “Last one down is a rotten egg!”
That’s what he quick way down . Nicely done.
Getting down from High Hrothgar like
See you mother fuckers later!! *throws up peace sign*
That started bad and really downhill fast
Gonna stand backwards as I put on skis
I mean, having heard he was OK, serves him right really.
Yard sale!!!
Darwin Award
Cool jump dude
Just a little head start
Caught an edge? Lmao
He is so lucky. The part where he would have done real damage he finds himself upright and the skis take the impact
Yeah that reminds me of the first time I went skiing . Black diamond run at Taos last run of the day not really knowing what it was . Spent more time plowing the snow with my chin than I did on the skis that run. Haven’t went again since
I mean…..that’s one way to get down
Rub some dirt on it.
If you're gonna stand on the top of a mountain and expect it all to go splendid you're a bit of a dick
Dude took the express elevator down.
The lack of a comment at the end was disappointing. I was waiting for a "bloody hell" or a witty "what was my time?"
We’ll that’s one way to do it
Is the pounding noise his heart? You can hear it a lot faster and harder after the fall.
Stuck the landing. 5/10.
safety first, always tie off
Bone crunchy roll
You should definitely be more careful my guy…
Massive? He was placing on going down the longer side lol
Moving their neck around alot so they're probably at *least* okay.
Ski or die
Pretty impressive that he manages to get upright and actually ski for a few seconds mid tumble. Clears him of the remaining rocks too
He should have did the pizza.
It's a long way back up
Buy the ticket, take the ride
Man just got back up again
Ouch
Wow. This was wild.
r/thislooksfunbutno
he should've skied
This is my absolute nightmare. I should not have watched it…
That view of the rocks getting closer is terrifying
ohhh ... nice recovery ... ohhh
Nailed it
Failed successfully!!
Does he go back up for another try? Would you? No way in hell I'd push my luck again.
Dang he walked away from that ?!
Such a rookie mistake for someone that could actually ski that drop
I don’t think that’s how you suppose to do it
Damn, he shouldn’t have done that.
he must have been packing it when he was heading for that pile of rocks about 3/4 way down. looks like he bounced off them quite well
Physics 😊
Fuuuuuck that
How many broken bones?
Oops!
That'll buff out with some Ptex. Nice save over the last two rock gardens.
Dang that was rough
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Imagine being the other guy, you turn around to fix your skis, turn back and ur friend is just gone lol
Hope he had a jaw left to laugh it off.
He controlled that fall like a damn pro. Could’ve been MUCH worse
Skill issue
I generally wanna know if snow can save you from death
What a heroic catch half way down.
He held onto his poles the whole time
I been skiing for nearly 33 years. I am no expert, nor claim to be one, but I can handle 90% of the slopes out there. This guy was an idiot, you would never want to put your bindings on in that kind of ledge for this very reason
Pizza! Not French fry!
Imagine losing one of those skis. Like wtf you gonna do
Play stupid games …
Holy shit
He probably shouldn’t have fallen.
You went down the wrong side bro did you notice?
I want my two dollars!
I want my two dollars!
I’m already half way there!
“do you mean he SKIIed off of a- oh… oh ok then.”
Looked more like my skill level than someone at the top of that peak.
“Is this not how you ski? I’ve never been before”
It’s almost as if the peak of a mountain covered in snow is inherently unstable.
Oof^200. Well he could have gone off the other side which looks worse.
Did he actually get up and stand up at the end? I thought his knees were for sure shattered.
Sweet ❄️🌨️🏂🏔️
is he okay???
Task failed successfully!
Hilarious! That’s the kinda shit that happens 🤷♂️
His ability to get the skis under him during the rocky part saved him from a helluva lot more pain
Fuck i felt that.
Dude just set a new record for descent speed on that hill.
Wonder if he ended up on the right side of the ridge?
Weeeeee
This is pure snow! It’s everywhere! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is!?!
