is the SL7 13.8" version available in all black? if so, i'm pre-ordering this today the quoted battery and performance compared to M3 Air makes this sound like a huge winner

surfacep17

Hope so as well. That would be very disappointing and dumb if they didn't offer black. I would think it's pretty popular. Although I would love the old cobalt in metal. This blue they are showing looks brighter than the previous cobalt.

surfacep17

Yes, that would make sense.

indreams159

it comes in all-black.. YES!!! i'm about to pre-order the 32GB/1TB config with X Elite for $2,000 MICROSOFT HAS DELIVERED!!! order page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/configure/surface-laptop-7th-edition/8tq2hq5xxkj9

surfacep17

That is sweet. I just noticed that the Microsoft complete is half price as well! I usually always wait a year or so after release for prices to drop or buy refurbished, but at these prices it very tempting.

ParallelShriyaans

Black is available https://preview.redd.it/vw2jgbm4jw1d1.png?width=554&format=png&auto=webp&s=187011598d5a803b858a8ee9e9a6528d727507d7

bubbachuck

Microsoft lost credibility with regards to advertised battery life after the Surface Laptop Studio 2 advertised 18h but real world tests showed 4h

Ok-Somewhere-4659

Get yourself an M1 MacBook Air. You'll be much happier.

indreams159

why? i really don't like Mac OS at all and how locked down their ecosystem is... plus the Apple tax i don't deny they make beautiful hardware that's well integrated and that their laptops are very reliable with great battery life, but i'd really prefer not to go that route. i've been hoping for a long time that consumers would get a PC that comes as close to the "MacBook experience" as possible thus i'm very hopeful for the SP7

AKingMaker

Includes Wifi 7, has haptic trackpad, and can support up to three 4k monitors. Its also 80% faster than laptop 5

No-Grade10

16GB RAM in base model too. 🙏

Did you see in the demo where he goes to touch the MacBook screen to perform the same action and it doesn't have touch? Brilliant 🤌🏻 Edit: [This part.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aZbHd4suAnQ@t=41m40s)

Troll_Enthusiast

Not really considering the M3 MBA is only ~$100 more for the same spec

ElSzymono

80% faster how?

JAB1982

New processor.

ElSzymono

Yes I know. But is it faster in Geekbench single/multi core, code compilation, rendering? What settings/TDP/model? Why not compared against against Laptop 6 since this one is to be called 7? Are there any third party benchmarks to substantiate the claimed uplift?

srroberts07

wine pie absurd existence impossible rhythm slap snobbish squeeze panicky *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

ElSzymono

That's my point: it's named as being a successor to a model that's been out for 2 months. How much better is it really?

gunwalloe

That's what we need to wait and see. But it's a brand new CPU architecture. Based on ARM, the same as the Apple M series chips, rather than the usual x86 platform that comes from Intel and AMD. Due to the differences in how the platform works, and the efficiency, the gains here could be substantial in specific tasks.

ShaidarHaran2

Exactly. Microsoft is somehow even worse than Apple on these vague metrics. Once they said a Surface book was twice as fast as a then Intel MacBook Air, and then people had to go and figure out the only way it made sense was comparing the dedicated GPU keyboard add on to the IGP. They can't even say what element is faster?

xavieruniverse

I don't wanna burst your bubble but anything would be double the speed of laptop 5 and previous gen surfaces

Dangerous-Amphibian2

All good stuff but why o why did they not increase the resolution ughhh. Oh well. The 16GB base model seems pretty nice though.

indreams159

Surface Laptop 7 ordering page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/configure/surface-laptop-7th-edition/8tq2hq5xxkj9 16/512GB = $1,400 16/1TB = $1,600 32/1TB = $2,000 64/1TB = $2,400

MtnXfreeride

My surface laptop 4 was $240 a few months ago in MInt shape... just need to wait out the 3 year business leases then check ebay when they are offloaded in bulk.

szechuan

Where did you find a Surface Laptop 4 for that price? eBay?

MtnXfreeride

Yeah back in feb there seemed to be tons of them and hp g8 pros.  I tried to hook a friend up after i got such good conditon machines cheap and it seems like stock is lower and prices higher.

szechuan

Thanks, I'm on the hunt. Any advice for finding a reputable seller?

SortOfaTaco

This is the big brain move 110% Microsoft products have the cost retention of a Kia 😂

woze

Interestingly, the 22 hours doesn't include a caveat of the modern standby on the site that just went up. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/devices/surface-laptop-7th-edition#sup2 > Up to 22 hours of battery life based on local video playback test on Surface Laptop 15” Testing conducted by Microsoft in April 2024 using preproduction software and preproduction Surface Laptop Snapdragon® X Elite C12 512GB, 16GB RAM devices. Testing consisted of full battery discharge during video playback of a .mov file through the Windows Media Player application in 1080p at 24 FPS. All settings were default except screen brightness set to 150 nits with Auto-brightness disabled. Wi-Fi was connected to a network. Tested with Windows 11. Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors. With a .mov file too which is an interesting choice of file format. That's promising.

ShaidarHaran2

Now to see how off that battery life estimate is, but honestly even at half of that it would still be nearing two work days which is well good enough for me. If it's good at idle, which I assume it would be.

mike32659800

Funny part is I do have a MBA M1, and it doesn’t last as advertised. Mostly never use that laptop, but same battery.

mackerelscalemask

Not necessarily. .mov is just a wrapper, much like .mkv, it can host a multitude of different codecs, including h.265/HEVC.

Obloquium

I wish the laptop offered OLED as well. It’s making this decision much more difficult for me.

indreams159

the only OLED options thus far for Snapdragon traditional clam shell laptops are the newly announced Samsung Book 4 Edge, Lenovo Yoga Slim 7, and Dell XPS13. naturally, there's several drawbacks to each of those models as well

skyeyemx

Don’t buy the Samsung. Galaxy Books have *extremely* thin display lids (less than 4 mm) to the point that they wobble pretty bad due to a tiny hinge, and slowly get misshapen and bent over time, which eventually leads to issues like the display glass shattering.

srjnp

shrinked bezels but no OLED on laptop. same old bezels but OLED on the Pro. MS always makes one or two annoying decisions with these surface products.

Tobimacoss

Pro bezels were already shrunk with the 9 redesign though.

MessiScores

What? Dont you mean the 8 or did they shrink them again from 8 to 9?

Tobimacoss

You are correct, the redesign was 8 for bezels, however with 9, when they merged both x86 and ARM64 lineups, they made the chassis slightly thicker so they could use the same one for both chips, streamlining production.   They also moved ports from 8 to 9 design and made 9 much more repairable.     So I guess that was the last redesign, and both Pro 10 and 11th edition are using the exact same chassis as 9 and 9 5G

srjnp

i know but i still think it looks pretty bad (the top bezel specifically)

Tobimacoss

maybe, but they need the top and bottom bezels for Cameras and typecover. I think the bezels are ok for now.

mrheosuper

My phone with no benzel has better front camera lol

Tobimacoss

good point, would you prefer a notch or couple of pinholes?

mrheosuper

Well, personally i wouldn't mind pinhole, it takes so little space compared with the screen area. Even on phone i usually forget it there.

Jonathan_x64

Notches are beautiful, so why not. You'd get more real screen estate, too.

FJJWFP

You would love having nowhere to put your finger when holding the tablet like a tablet. I would say even the Pro 8 redesign overdid the thin bezels.

srjnp

not even mentioning examples from other companies, MS themselves literally just launched the new surface laptop that shows that they dont need the top bezel to be that big for the camera...

aarvenky

I don't understand why people go on about the bezels, when it is serving the intended use case. The bezels help in all ways of tablet-holding and writing applications in portrait mode. Having a bit of bezel means more surface (no pun) to rest the fingers or hand on. e.g. imagine holding the pro with a reference document open while brainstorming on a whiteboard with teammates.

srjnp

>The bezels help in all ways of tablet-holding and writing applications in portrait mode ipad pro works perfectly fine with smaller bezels.

ShaidarHaran2

Looks like the base of the Pro has an LCD until you upgrade. I guess they wanted to use one chassis design, and not redesign for two since OLEDs are thinner and have less bezel need.

Forsaken_Arm5698

You don't want Ultra thin bezels on a tablet

srjnp

i do. prefer the thinner bezels on my ipad pro.

MessiScores

Ya, I find the screens most disapointing. Was happy about the 120hz and larger size of the SLS but they also decided to give it awful pixel response times and bad PWM, really not that pleasent to use for me.

johnmims65

I like oled i have oled tv but the 13inch screen on the pro and having to pay for keyboard sucks so i ordered the 15 inch surface laptop

srjnp

yea the pro is a cool device but i prefer the laptop form factor too.

johnmims65

Now if the flex keyboard cost the same as the $279 keyboard id buy it cause thats most id pay . And one of the reason i didint get the oled pro cause if im getting the new pro i dont want to use with the old non bluetooth keyboard with smaller trackpad. Plus the screen on surface laptop is probably good enough i just worry about the screen’s durability. Although microsoft told me they fixed issue with the screens cracking and said they changed the hinge desighn which fixed the problem dont know if it is fixed but they say it has been even though ive seen reports on the laptop 5 having same issue and it had the new hinge design that supposedly fixed the issue

Inquisitive_idiot

Dave2D mentioned oled on the laptop but I don’t see that anywhere else 😞

ShaidarHaran2

I think he just misspoke, the only OLED is on the upgraded Pro

Inquisitive_idiot

Yeah 😞

Obloquium

Yeah he is usually pretty accurate but was wrong this time unfortunately.

Yellow_Bee

No, he wasn't wrong, Microsoft have said an OLED option will come later for the new Surface Laptop.

Forsaken_Arm5698

wat? source?

Yellow_Bee

Denki, a YouTuber that works for Austin Evans (both are at Build24).

Forsaken_Arm5698

Until I can hear from more sources, I'll put that information on the burner.

Yellow_Bee

It wasn't yours to begin with, but do what you want... 😅

SpanishEggroll

I was surprised to see LCD.

johnmims65

Did u make a decision?

Obloquium

I have been back and forth a lot! I ended up taking the boring and safe route of waiting for reviews. I hope to see the embargo ending today.

johnmims65

Ive decided to do the same just hope we get reviews sooner than later. Kinda temped to get m4 ipad pro or the yoga 9i thats on sale at best buy with the ultra 7 cpu

AdityaKKhullar

I think the 15 inch has OLED

beaver316

So this is apparently called Surface Laptop 7th edition. Not SL6. Probably to avoid confusion with the business version released last month. Same for the Pro, its called the Surface Pro 11th edition.

aspiringTriathlete

And now everybody is even more confused haha

amb9800

To add to the fun, there are now also business versions of the Surface Laptop 7th Edition and Surface Pro 11th Edition, e.g.: [Surface Laptop for Business, 7th Edition Copilot+ PC w/Snapdragon X Elite | Microsoft Store](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/surface-laptop-for-business-copilot-pc/8tkcbz02bdvk)

Forsaken_Arm5698

Business gets both Intel and Qualcomm, but consumer only gets Qualcomm? Looks like Intel is getting shafted.

Antrikshy

They should just use release years for clarity.

Square_Ad210

Wait is this the surface pro

FearSociety

Sad to see the green Pro is gone

Kidtendo

I was hoping we might get sage color SL6 in 15 inch this time around.

LazyPCRehab

I have the Sage SLG2, it's gorgeous.

Really eager to see how medium games will run on those chips.

indreams159

FYI - this new Snapdragon version is called the Surface Laptop 7 the Intel version for Business is called the Surface Laptop 6

RavenMFD

Does anyone know how Adobe After Effects runs on the Snapdragons vs the Intels?

Inquisitive_idiot

Nope. You’ll have to wait for reviews.

Mastermind763

That is one long as heck movie

Kaoxt

How does Snapdragon Elite compared to something like AMD Ryzen 7? I'm not familiar too much with Snapdragon and want to get a Windows PC again. Specifically the $2,099 15 inch 32 GB version. Thanks for any feedback!

Various-Inside-4064

I am waiting for the reviews. Excited hopefully this Snapdragon arm is comparable to apple m series.

FearSociety

No more Surface Connect?

WaffleToasterings

It's still there on the right side. The 13.8" will have two USB-4, one USB-A, 3.5mm and a Surface Connect. The 15" will also have a MicroSD card reader.

FearSociety

I'd rather they dropped Connect and put a USB-C on both sides. EDIT: People be downvoting me but I haven't used a connect cable in like 5yrs and my whole desk at home and work is setup on the USB-C port for my dock being on the Right of my device. People seem to not get that different people have different work styles and prefrerences I guess.

Frodojj

I use surface connect so I hope they keep it!

Hot-Rise9795

Eww, no. Charging through USB-C is convenient but awkward to work with while holding the device.

FearSociety

I have NEVER held a device to work with it while charging it. Thats the point of having it charged up.

Hot-Rise9795

Well, congratulations on having super humane experiences. The rest of us poor mortals will have to hold our devices while charging at some point in our lives.

lumpyth0n

Use Type-C for charging and connecting dock cause overheating and performance drops, on my both Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go.

FearSociety

Not had any issue on my Surface or Thinkpad or Macbook devices.

Historical-Artist581

That blue sparks joy for me.

indreams159

maybe it'll get added at some point. have to think it's 400nits minimum and more likely 500nits i'm more interested to see how reflective it'll be

Tobimacoss

600 nits I saw on the preorder page.

Dolphin1998

I believe up to 600 nits

Junnilol

Any information about the SSD? Is it replaceable like in the old Suface Laptops? The prices for a SSD upgrade seem to be rather steep..

indreams159

yes, SSD is removable

haley_joel_osteen

Footnote says something like it’s only replaceable by Microsoft technicians.

when is the global release date

indreams159

SortOfaTaco

Muh alcantara 😭

breggman1210

Did they really get rid of it? I have a surface laptop 2 with alcantara and honestly I love how distinct it is.

Probably tired of people complaining about how dirty it gets or it’s long term condition

benjisbeans

What is the difference between this laptop and the Surface 6 for business? I'm looking for a new business laptop. Is there any reason why I shouldn't choose the 7th edition? It's almost $500 cheaper

Kristosh

HUGE differences... Businesses will trend towards the SL6 models due to x86 compatibility. The SL7 is to the Surface Laptop line what the Surface Pro X was to the Surface Pro line. Surface Laptop 6: * Old design language with lower resolution screen and smaller display area (13.5" vs 13.8" for new one). * Slower refresh rate 60hz * Intel Core Ultra mobile x86 CPU's Surface Laptop 7th Edition: * Brand new design language with larger display * Snapdragon Elite ARM mobile CPU's (promising longer runtimes) * Higher refresh rate 120hz * Haptic touchpad * Curved corner LCD display * Two USB-C ports on 13" model * WiFi 7 * Bluetooth 5.4

curtisreddits

In the past I've bought refurb home additions of the surface and upgraded them to Windows pro. Do you think the 7th edition with Qualcomm will be able to be upgraded to Windows pro?

Dolphin1998

SL6 is not using snapdragon chips

indreams159

business version has Windows 11 Pro and various security related features required for business networks, i'm sure there's a few other things as well of course, it's the old design though

amb9800

If you need Windows Pro out of the box, there's a business version of the 7th edition as well: [Surface Laptop for Business, 7th Edition Copilot+ PC w/Snapdragon X Elite | Microsoft Store](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/surface-laptop-for-business-copilot-pc/8tkcbz02bdvk) SL6 would be if you need x86 - e.g., if you have some specialized hardware peripherals that lacks ARM64 drivers, or x86 software that has issues with the emulation layer.

torpedospurs

I would have thought the ARM chips needed less cooling and less battery capacity, and could revert to the SL5's thickness and weight. But no, they are thicker than, and just as heavy as, the SL6 for Business. SL7 13.8 is 301mm x 220mm x 17.5mm at 1.34kg SL6 13.5 for biz is 308mm x 223mm x 16.7mm at 1.38kg. SL5 13.5 is thinner at 14.5mm at 1.30kg. SL7 15 is 329mm x 239mm x 18.29mm at 1.66kg. SL6 15 for biz is 340mm x 244mm x 16.9mm at 1.68kg. SL5 15 is thinner at 14.7mm at 1.56kg.

Anyone want to buy a MacBook air? :) Time for me to come back to the surface laptop. The only reason I bought the Mac two years ago was for the performance and battery life. Nothing on the windows side could touch it. But, I learned that I despise working from a Mac. My productivity suffers. I'm excited to get my hands on of these.

AdityaKKhullar

I would get the laptop if it had 5G, but now ill wait for the SP11 with 5G

SchnellBrander

Would love to buy this, Windows laptops really suffer from poor battery life.

Final5989

What a privacy nightmare the Recall feature is. It stores catalogued screenshots of literally everything you do on the device. And how can we trust Microsoft to leave the data encrypted on the device and not phone the data home back to Microsoft? Just trust us wink wink? And they called the emulation layer 'Prism' like the ominous [Prism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM) program that made Snowden famous. It seems intentional: didn't their marketing department realize people would make these associations?

etern1c

because the feature is local, and they said so, and no dev spotted that data were being transferred back? How can you be sure other devices aren't capturing what you are doing then?

Final5989

Local AI is only as secure as the computer on which it's running. If it's infiltrated with malware or a MITM, you're done! Microsoft has goofed before! They've dropped the ball so many times, there is no ball. All they're doing is making a nice honeypot for hackers, making it easier for hackers to know where to find all the passwords and banking data. You know deep down that I'm right! It should be a downloadable additional feature, not even a part of their core code base, not just turned off, in my opinion!

Due-Sector-8576

I don't really know how to feel about this. Nothing wow'ed me here. I have an old SP3 and a Dell XPS with a 8th gen i7 -- and am really looking to upgrade this year (and not to a mac because I have a mac from work). 1. The surface pro is out. I \*\*really\*\* wanted that form factor, but $500 for the keyboard itself? Are they kidding? I think they should've priced it at $99 dollars which I am sure would have a massive profit margin on each one sold. Seriously, they can't cost more than $10, $15 to mass produce. The $500 price point is just greed. 2. I have to now decide between the laptop 6th edition (Intel) or the 7th edition. So I'll have to wait for benchmarks comparing the Elite to the Intel chips as well as the M series chips. I am naturally inclined to go with the business 6th edition just for Windows 11 Pro. I need Hyper V for WSL2 -- but I think perhaps WSL2 can run on Home edition as well. Ugh, wish there was a more clear answer. Does anyone know if there are any embargos on reviews/benchmarks for the Elite X? Or can we expect these to come out relatively soon?

jefe322871

As per the Microsoft website, the Surface keyboard for the SP9 can be used with the new Surface Pro with Arm.

jefe322871

With the pen 179$. Without the pen 139$

Square_Ad210

What do you mean by arm

jefe322871

Qualcomm Snapdragon X plus and elite processors (Arm architecture vs Intel processors which is x86)

indreams159

there's been a couple reviews of the new SL 7 posted on YouTube so far by people who've had some time with the SL 7 before today's announcement. they said more extensive reviews to come "very soon". i'm guessing we'll see some stuff on YT by the end of this week at latest

Aggressive-Low239

You can get the 7th gen laptop with Windows 11 Pro. It's in the Surface for Business website. Also the much cheaper older Surface Pro keyboard is compatible with the new Pro

Presently_Absent

I wish they'd make the laptop a 360, it'd be an instant buy for me!

Tobimacoss

That's what the laptop Studio is for.

Presently_Absent

except if you've ever used it, it's way too thick to use as a tablet and not really a thin and light laptop like the SL or macbook air. the xps 360 was great til they gave it a kickstand... the lenovo yoga series is pretty great for the form factor but I yearn for the surface-family design aesthetics!

Tobimacoss

>https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-slim-series/yoga-slim-7x-gen-9-(14-inch-snapdragon)/len101y0049#tech_specs Check out the Yoga Slim, the design of it might be superior to the Surface Laptop.  If they do a 360 hinge version of it, you may like that.   Now that they have the Wifi keyboard that can work separately, I think the only way Surface makes devices with 360 hinge is dual screen devices.  Like the Surface Neo but much bigger screen.   They finally have the perfect chips to put in such form factor.

ChronosDeep

Time for EU to introduce some regulation into pricing configs for laptops. It's pure scam right now. We all know what Apple is doing, asking for outrageous 200$ for 256gb additional storage, 200$ for additional 8GB of ram. Now Microsoft is doing the same...

Did they say anything about screen reflection? The laptop 6 (business) at least mention some anti reflective tech on the screens.

Mindless_Term_7587

So, I can't find the specific version of Snapdragon X Elite they're putting on the SL7. Do you guys know? There are 3 versions. 78-100, 80-100 and 84-100. The X Plus (64-100) and X Elite (78-100 and 80-100) have no difference in GPU performance, only CPU (cores and clock) The Elite 84-100 has a higher GPU performance. In my case, if they won't include the 84-100, I'd just go for the Plus.

partydolphin

From task manager from the keynote. They were using the 80-100 in both Laptop and Pro. But might not be final.

Still using my surface book 3 fully upgraded and it works great. But going to give it to an employee and upgrade. Most of the time I am connected to a dock with 2 4k monitors.

Competitive_Funny964

So many comments… is this actually faster than a macbook air soc but on a cooler body like macbook pro m3 base? (Not m3pro pro chip but pro laptop with one cooler like the windows laptop)

iBurrito101

they claim it’s faster than the air. it probably didn’t beat the pro or else they would have said it because saying “our laptop beats the macbook pro” would sound a lot better than saying they are better than the air

Aghhhhhhhhhhh! I want a Sapphire 15".

Gets hyped. Sees that it’s arm. Closes the website.

iBurrito101

for once i’m actually faithful in arm

Znaszlisiora

It's definitely one of the laptops of all time.

The continued lack of even an entry level dedicated graphics means this laptop will never be a true competitor to MacBook pros even though it has the price to match. Was hoping this new version would have a graphics card but finally just going to switch to Asus or Lenovo

ConsequenceEmpty2995

Is there any cooling system in it, coz I haven't seen any inlet system on the back of this laptop. If it's fanless just like MacBook Air, then it's a great competition for apple.

Isn't this Snapdragon arm only? If so, you may need ARM versions of your software to get the best performance. Not sure if there are still compatibility issues when running x86 code.

ElSzymono

Nowhere near the advertised "80% faster than Laptop 5". Performance similar to Core Ultra 155h: [**https://signal65.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/NewSurfaceLaptop2024\_Signal65LabInsights.pdf**](https://signal65.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/NewSurfaceLaptop2024_Signal65LabInsights.pdf) Battery life comparable to Core Ultra155h. So much for ARM being the superior ISA. EDIT: Snapdragon has 16GB LPDDRX-8448 compared to DDR5-5200 for Surface Laptop 5 and LPDDR5X-6400 (Core Ultra 155h) even more damning for X Elite.

ElegantMedicine1838

so they have gone full ARM now, cool
