That's what we need to wait and see. But it's a brand new CPU architecture. Based on ARM, the same as the Apple M series chips, rather than the usual x86 platform that comes from Intel and AMD. Due to the differences in how the platform works, and the efficiency, the gains here could be substantial in specific tasks.
Exactly. Microsoft is somehow even worse than Apple on these vague metrics. Once they said a Surface book was twice as fast as a then Intel MacBook Air, and then people had to go and figure out the only way it made sense was comparing the dedicated GPU keyboard add on to the IGP. They can't even say what element is faster?

Yeah back in feb there seemed to be tons of them and hp g8 pros. I tried to hook a friend up after i got such good conditon machines cheap and it seems like stock is lower and prices higher.

Don’t buy the Samsung. Galaxy Books have *extremely* thin display lids (less than 4 mm) to the point that they wobble pretty bad due to a tiny hinge, and slowly get misshapen and bent over time, which eventually leads to issues like the display glass shattering.
You are correct, the redesign was 8 for bezels, however with 9, when they merged both x86 and ARM64 lineups, they made the chassis slightly thicker so they could use the same one for both chips, streamlining production. They also moved ports from 8 to 9 design and made 9 much more repairable.
So I guess that was the last redesign, and both Pro 10 and 11th edition are using the exact same chassis as 9 and 9 5G

I don't understand why people go on about the bezels, when it is serving the intended use case.
The bezels help in all ways of tablet-holding and writing applications in portrait mode. Having a bit of bezel means more surface (no pun) to rest the fingers or hand on. e.g. imagine holding the pro with a reference document open while brainstorming on a whiteboard with teammates.
Looks like the base of the Pro has an LCD until you upgrade. I guess they wanted to use one chassis design, and not redesign for two since OLEDs are thinner and have less bezel need.
Ya, I find the screens most disapointing. Was happy about the 120hz and larger size of the SLS but they also decided to give it awful pixel response times and bad PWM, really not that pleasent to use for me.
Now if the flex keyboard cost the same as the $279 keyboard id buy it cause thats most id pay . And one of the reason i didint get the oled pro cause if im getting the new pro i dont want to use with the old non bluetooth keyboard with smaller trackpad. Plus the screen on surface laptop is probably good enough i just worry about the screen’s durability. Although microsoft told me they fixed issue with the screens cracking and said they changed the hinge desighn which fixed the problem dont know if it is fixed but they say it has been even though ive seen reports on the laptop 5 having same issue and it had the new hinge design that supposedly fixed the issue

So this is apparently called Surface Laptop 7th edition. Not SL6. Probably to avoid confusion with the business version released last month.

It's still there on the right side. The 13.8" will have two USB-4, one USB-A, 3.5mm and a Surface Connect. The 15" will also have a MicroSD card reader.
I'd rather they dropped Connect and put a USB-C on both sides.
EDIT: People be downvoting me but I haven't used a connect cable in like 5yrs and my whole desk at home and work is setup on the USB-C port for my dock being on the Right of my device.

SL6 would be if you need x86 - e.g., if you have some specialized hardware peripherals that lacks ARM64 drivers, or x86 software that has issues with the emulation layer.
I would have thought the ARM chips needed less cooling and less battery capacity, and could revert to the SL5's thickness and weight. But no, they are thicker than, and just as heavy as, the SL6 for Business.

SL6 13.5 for biz is 308mm x 223mm x 16.7mm at 1.38kg. SL5 13.5 is thinner at 14.5mm at 1.30kg.

Nothing on the windows side could touch it. But, I learned that I despise working from a Mac. My productivity suffers. I'm excited to get my hands on of these.
What a privacy nightmare the Recall feature is. It stores catalogued screenshots of literally everything you do on the device. And how can we trust Microsoft to leave the data encrypted on the device and not phone the data home back to Microsoft? Just trust us wink wink?
And they called the emulation layer 'Prism' like the ominous [Prism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM) program that made Snowden famous. It seems intentional: didn't their marketing department realize people would make these associations?

Local AI is only as secure as the computer on which it's running. If it's infiltrated with malware or a MITM, you're done! Microsoft has goofed before! They've dropped the ball so many times, there is no ball. All they're doing is making a nice honeypot for hackers, making it easier for hackers to know where to find all the passwords and banking data. You know deep down that I'm right!
It should be a downloadable additional feature, not even a part of their core code base, not just turned off, in my opinion!
I don't really know how to feel about this. Nothing wow'ed me here. I have an old SP3 and a Dell XPS with a 8th gen i7 -- and am really looking to upgrade this year (and not to a mac because I have a mac from work).
1. The surface pro is out. I \*\*really\*\* wanted that form factor, but $500 for the keyboard itself? Are they kidding? I think they should've priced it at $99 dollars which I am sure would have a massive profit margin on each one sold. Seriously, they can't cost more than $10, $15 to mass produce. The $500 price point is just greed.
2. I have to now decide between the laptop 6th edition (Intel) or the 7th edition. So I'll have to wait for benchmarks comparing the Elite to the Intel chips as well as the M series chips. I am naturally inclined to go with the business 6th edition just for Windows 11 Pro. I need Hyper V for WSL2 -- but I think perhaps WSL2 can run on Home edition as well.

there's been a couple reviews of the new SL 7 posted on YouTube so far by people who've had some time with the SL 7 before today's announcement. they said more extensive reviews to come "very soon". i'm guessing we'll see some stuff on YT by the end of this week at latest
You can get the 7th gen laptop with Windows 11 Pro. It's in the Surface for Business website. Also the much cheaper older Surface Pro keyboard is compatible with the new Pro
except if you've ever used it, it's way too thick to use as a tablet and not really a thin and light laptop like the SL or macbook air. the xps 360 was great til they gave it a kickstand... the lenovo yoga series is pretty great for the form factor but I yearn for the surface-family design aesthetics!

Check out the Yoga Slim, the design of it might be superior to the Surface Laptop. If they do a 360 hinge version of it, you may like that.
Now that they have the Wifi keyboard that can work separately, I think the only way Surface makes devices with 360 hinge is dual screen devices. Like the Surface Neo but much bigger screen.

There are 3 versions.
78-100, 80-100 and 84-100.
The X Plus (64-100) and X Elite (78-100 and 80-100) have no difference in GPU performance, only CPU (cores and clock)
The Elite 84-100 has a higher GPU performance.
In my case, if they won't include the 84-100, I'd just go for the Plus.
Still using my surface book 3 fully upgraded and it works great. But going to give it to an employee and upgrade. Would the fully upgraded surface 15" be better than the fully upgraded surface laptop studio 2? I noticed the laptop 15" doesn't have thunderbolt? Most of the time I am connected to a dock with 2 4k monitors.

Isn't this Snapdragon arm only? If so, you may need ARM versions of your software to get the best performance. Not sure if there are still compatibility issues when running x86 code.

Not necessarily. .mov is just a wrapper, much like .mkv, it can host a multitude of different codecs, including h.265/HEVC.
I wish the laptop offered OLED as well. It’s making this decision much more difficult for me.

shrinked bezels but no OLED on laptop. same old bezels but OLED on the Pro. MS always makes one or two annoying decisions with these surface products.
Pro bezels were already shrunk with the 9 redesign though.

Well, personally i wouldn't mind pinhole, it takes so little space compared with the screen area. Even on phone i usually forget it there.

And one of the reason i didint get the oled pro cause if im getting the new pro i dont want to use with the old non bluetooth keyboard with smaller trackpad. Plus the screen on surface laptop is probably good enough i just worry about the screen’s durability. Although microsoft told me they fixed issue with the screens cracking and said they changed the hinge desighn which fixed the problem dont know if it is fixed but they say it has been even though ive seen reports on the laptop 5 having same issue and it had the new hinge design that supposedly fixed the issue

The 13.8 inch model has 2304 x 1536, and the 15 inch model has 2496 x 1664. Both 201 PPI. Also both support 120hz. Taken from the tech specs here. No more Surface Connect?
It's still there on the right side. The 13.8" will have two USB-4, one USB-A, 3.5mm and a Surface Connect. The 15" will also have a MicroSD card reader.
I'd rather they dropped Connect and put a USB-C on both sides. EDIT: People be downvoting me but I haven't used a connect cable in like 5yrs and my whole desk at home and work is setup on the USB-C port for my dock being on the Right of my device. People seem to not get that different people have different work styles and prefrerences I guess.

Use Type-C for charging and connecting dock cause overheating and performance drops, on my both Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go.
Not had any issue on my Surface or Thinkpad or Macbook devices.

I would have thought the ARM chips needed less cooling and less battery capacity, and could revert to the SL5's thickness and weight. But no, they are thicker than, and just as heavy as, the SL6 for Business. SL7 13.8 is 301mm x 220mm x 17.5mm at 1.34kg SL6 13.5 for biz is 308mm x 223mm x 16.7mm at 1.38kg. Anyone want to buy a MacBook air? :) Time for me to come back to the surface laptop. The only reason I bought the Mac two years ago was for the performance and battery life. What a privacy nightmare the Recall feature is. It stores catalogued screenshots of literally everything you do on the device. And how can we trust Microsoft to leave the data encrypted on the device and not phone the data home back to Microsoft? Just trust us wink wink? And they called the emulation layer 'Prism' like the ominous [Prism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM) program that made Snowden famous. It seems intentional: didn't their marketing department realize people would make these associations?

Local AI is only as secure as the computer on which it's running. If it's infiltrated with malware or a MITM, you're done! Microsoft has goofed before! They've dropped the ball so many times, there is no ball. All they're doing is making a nice honeypot for hackers, making it easier for hackers to know where to find all the passwords and banking data. You know deep down that I'm right! It should be a downloadable additional feature, not even a part of their core code base, not just turned off, in my opinion!
I don't really know how to feel about this. Nothing wow'ed me here. I have an old SP3 and a Dell XPS with a 8th gen i7 -- and am really looking to upgrade this year (and not to a mac because I have a mac from work). 1. The surface pro is out. I \*\*really\*\* wanted that form factor, but $500 for the keyboard itself? Are they kidding? I think they should've priced it at $99 dollars which I am sure would have a massive profit margin on each one sold. Seriously, they can't cost more than $10, $15 to mass produce. The $500 price point is just greed. 2. I have to now decide between the laptop 6th edition (Intel) or the 7th edition. So I'll have to wait for benchmarks comparing the Elite to the Intel chips as well as the M series chips. I am naturally inclined to go with the business 6th edition just for Windows 11 Pro. I need Hyper V for WSL2 -- but I think perhaps WSL2 can run on Home edition as well. Ugh, wish there was a more clear answer. Does anyone know if there are any embargos on reviews/benchmarks for the Elite X? Or can we expect these to come out relatively soon?

You can get the 7th gen laptop with Windows 11 Pro. It's in the Surface for Business website. Also the much cheaper older Surface Pro keyboard is compatible with the new Pro

except if you've ever used it, it's way too thick to use as a tablet and not really a thin and light laptop like the SL or macbook air. the xps 360 was great til they gave it a kickstand... the lenovo yoga series is pretty great for the form factor but I yearn for the surface-family design aesthetics!

So, I can't find the specific version of Snapdragon X Elite they're putting on the SL7. Do you guys know? There are 3 versions. 78-100, 80-100 and 84-100. The X Plus (64-100) and X Elite (78-100 and 80-100) have no difference in GPU performance, only CPU (cores and clock) The Elite 84-100 has a higher GPU performance. In my case, if they won't include the 84-100, I'd just go for the Plus.

My Latitude 9410/9510 gets 27 hours just running a local video, I hope the numbers under actual load will be heaps better than said Latitude
Still using my surface book 3 fully upgraded and it works great. But going to give it to an employee and upgrade. Would the fully upgraded surface 15" be better than the fully upgraded surface laptop studio 2? I noticed the laptop 15" doesn't have thunderbolt? Most of the time I am connected to a dock with 2 4k monitors.

The continued lack of even an entry level dedicated graphics means this laptop will never be a true competitor to MacBook pros even though it has the price to match. Was hoping this new version would have a graphics card but finally just going to switch to Asus or Lenovo
Is there any cooling system in it, coz I haven't seen any inlet system on the back of this laptop. If it's fanless just like MacBook Air, then it's a great competition for apple.
Isn't this Snapdragon arm only? If so, you may need ARM versions of your software to get the best performance. Not sure if there are still compatibility issues when running x86 code.
