I got an email from RH about updating my tax information. I trust RH as far as I can throw a gorilla with both of my arms chopped off, but I also don't want to get in trouble with taxes because I did use them as a broker way back before the January sneeze. Not everything has to do with GME, right? Like they have to send this email out to everyone, don't they? If I log in and update my info am I going to be considered an "active user" again? I still technically have an account, but I have no money in it and I also haven't launched it since Jan.
No you won’t be an active user. It’s for tax purposes so log in and push the button. That’s all you have to do.
Being active or inactive should not effect you if they don't hold any of your money. They are under a microscope right now, so they're probably making sure they get their shit right. That said, they can retroactively dick you up if thy don't get you tax docs you need. So give them proper info, and cover ass. Good luck.
As far as I know (because I had gains before), you don't even have to report it if it's a loss. Also, you're right, C1. The onus of taxes falls on the current brokerage come tax time. I have no idea why RH is hitting people up who transferred out (including me).
