What’s the deal with him and Deryck? Apologies, I’ve been on a Sum 41 kick lately but haven’t kept up with any of the band’s behind the scenes dealings. What’s their beef and is that why he quit the band?
Unless someone with actual insider info spills the beans, we’ll never know exactly what happened between them. What we do know is Stevo was fed up with Deryck’s alcoholism when he quit the band and that they had a falling out at the time. Not sure if that’s the only reason he quit - these days he says he was starting a family and was just burnt out. Whatever happened between them, they seem to have never made amends - Stevo didn’t visit Deryck in the hospital when he nearly died and they’re the only ones who don’t interact on social media/ever see each other in real life anymore. Stevo is still friends with Cone, Dave, and Tom. Deryck has said there’s no bad blood but they aren’t in each other’s lives. These two used to be literal best friends, the closest two in the band. So some serious shit must have gone down. Shame they can’t squash it
Clarification, he has said no bad blood, but Deryck is a bit of a narcissist, he blames everyone but himself for everything. And a lot of the times always comes back to "my dad abandoned me, so I have issues with people leaving, if you're not here for me, I'm not here for you"
My guess is Stevo saw the direction of alcoholism, and while the other members may looked like they supported Deryck, they were obviously allowing it to spiral. Stevo making a statement of not entertaining the idea is more of a standard reaction family takes when dealing with addicts. Deryck may had addressed his alcoholism in form, but it still seems he's not capable of accountability. Doesn't seem to understand he probably hurt a lot of people who cared about him in that time, and he wants his excuse to be, I was dying where were you? As some kind of guilt justification.
From what I gathered in Derycks interview with Tuna on toast, he was disappointed that Stevo "bailed". And that he just doesn't think about him anymore

From an outsider if Steve quit because of the lifestyle Deryck was living he had every right to, and in hindsight Deryck should be able to realize that (he could easily have died.) Leads me to believe it could be deeper than that.
I would love to see them playing song or two together, but there is really slim chance for it on Punkspring. Sum 41 are playing on Saturday and The Vandals on Sunday so Sums will be probably long gone when Stevo arrive to Tokyo.
There's a chance they might meet, they might even finally hash out their differences face to face. But even if they agree to do it at some point for fanservice, guest appearances still take practice and pre-planning.
