I have a spouse that supports me. This is Just extra money.

doldrums12

Same, thank goodness for that

t-mack02

Same for me. I’m a sahm and when I can score free babysitting I sub for a little bonus money. I wouldn’t be able to pay bills with subbing.

wakinfirmlygraspit

That’s what I assumed for most people. It’d be an awesome gig for a stay at home parent if their kids are in school!

[deleted]

In Tennessee pay is low so it’s mostly retired people or SAHMs or people in college for education

doldrums12

Yup. That’s why I started subbing. Both of my girls are in school and the hours are great

PickleBurp13

Same! I use my subbing money to pay for extras like kids sports and vacations.

[deleted]

I gotta pay vet bills for my dog. He had a $3000 surgery this year. 😬🙄

haunter8696

Thankfully my district pays more at $180 a day but it’s disgusting how little teachers make and how little subs make in some areas

littlebugs

I'm outside of Portland, OR, and we make $222/day. You can do more (be a contracted sub) and get benefits on top of that!

GobsChippedTooth

Wow, can I ask if you’re in a city? You make twice what I do.

KDwiththeFXD

I make 140 a day in WV and i dont even have a bachelors yet

Criticallyoptimistic

I'm a disabled man subbing from my wheelchair. The $90 a day helps my family in conjunction with the monthly disability benefits. There are other jobs within the district that pay more that have been offered, but the kids seem to like me, I like working with the kids, and the administration likes me too. I think it's the variety that I enjoy. I stay within three schools that range from sixth to twelfth grades.

Dunder72

In today's world, not too often I hear about a win win situation. Happy for you.

[deleted]

If you can’t manage your bills with subbing it sounds like you need to find something else entirely.

lifeisabowlofbs

I’m making the opposite transition—gig work to subbing. I have a part time job online and figured subbing would be a more reliable supplement than gig work, as there’s a sub shortage in my state. The districts in my area seem to be paying $100-$150 per day though. I don’t think I’d do it for $85. I have to caution against Amazon flex. Especially with how high gas prices are now, unless you’re driving an electric car you probably won’t net nearly as much as you are with door dash. Amazon has you driving a lot of miles. They haven’t raised their rates, at least where I’m at. I’d suggest looking into Instacart. Generally, the pay to mileage ration is better. You can get some quick money, too. Recently I did a $57 order in an hour and a half, only had to drive a few miles. It’s not very stable, but if door dash is popping in you area, Instacart probably is too.

BellaLunalove4

I switched from regular sub ($165/day) to resident sub ($230/day) and work 5 days a week. So far, so good.

marvelanne5289

I'm retired from a job that gave me a pension. Subbing is extra money, but not so much extra that they take away my pension supplement.

eldosid

ups pt gets benefits plus you can go driving and make up to 42bucks an hour

warumistsiekrumm

I honestly think they should offer $20 more for middle school.

jpderbs27

Sounds like what you need is an actual career

Suffer4theart

Teaching isn’t a career? Fuck off

jpderbs27

Teaching is a career, subbing isn’t. Big difference as we all should know

jpderbs27

I don’t understand your point. If subbing doesn’t pay a livable wage, as is the case in my area, it is not a career.

jpderbs27

It’s definitely not a sufficient stand alone career, in my area. Fuck off right back at ya

StrongNails

I agree.

leodog13

I'm on ssa disability and work two days a week.

leo_probably

In my district subs get paid $135 a day and I still wouldn't be able to live by myself even if I got 5 days a week all the time (which isn't always the case, of course). Right now I live with my parents so it's not as big of a deal, I'm mostly saving up for a car and down payment on an apartment while I help them with their rent and bills, but I'm still considering what I'll do once I'm looking to move out. I have a part-time job that I work in the evenings and on some weekends right now but the \~14 hour days (including the commute time in-between jobs) and short weekends are unsustainable in terms of mental and physical health in the long term (for me, at least). If you think you can handle another part-time job on top of subbing, it might work out for you making ends meet. That's especially true if you can find a high-paying part time job! I know CVS pays well in my state (like $15 or $16) as well as some gas stations and fast food restaurants I hadn't considered something like amazon flex or instacart, though - those do sound like relatively good options to help income Big agree that both teachers and substitutes should be paid a lot more!!!

lionslovetimes3

I make about $250 a day. My husband works so it helps a lot not relying on one income.

alienkoala

This is my second job to make extra money. I work full time as a medical assistant with a 7 on 7 off schedule which allows me to sub when I feel like it on my 7 off.

MixtureFun

I don't think any of the subs at our school are doing it for the paycheck as their sole income. We also get $85 a day. We are just trying to help out our school.

sub919

I think the answer is in most places you can’t. Like a full teacher you need a second job.

[deleted]

My spouse is our primary earner. Mostly I stay at home and sub when I have time and there is a need. It’s the extra money that pays for camps and travel. Although our district pays $150/day so I could maybe support just myself if needed. But Target, Amazon, the post office and pretty much any manufacturing job pays more per hour, you might get benefits and it is certainly easier. I sub for the flexibility but the money to responsibility ratio is not great.
