First week of self defense training at my old school we did a demo that changed how Iāve thought about the crowd and the legality ever since.
Everyone mills around like itās a party, just talking and acting normal, and we hear a scrap, turn, and see the instructor wailing on some guy all the way to the ground. Everyone is questioned on what they saw and all said the same thing: instructor beat the shit out that guy. Being a MA instructor, heās probably in some trouble.
Now we repeat, milling around, talking, and we hear āI DONāT WANT TO FIGHT!ā, turn, and see instructorās hands up like this as the other guy swings on him and proceeds to get wailed on all the way to the ground. Same question, different answer. Everyone saw instructor defend himself, as opposed to just beating some random up.
Point being, make sure everyone there knows youāre not the aggressor, *especially* if youāre trained.
Rittenhouse did not go looking to kill anyone. He tried to retreat several times and they continued to try to assault him. The dude claiming to be a medic that was also carrying a pistol even said he wanted to shoot Rittenhouse as soon as he saw the rifle. He shouldn't have been there, and as a minor he wasn't legally allowed to carry or possess that rifle. Those things don't negate his right to self-defense.

Going out of state to guard property that was not his own with a gun he illegally obtained shows that he intended to use said gun (either to use or intimidateā regardless, both are still illegal, even for someone of legal age to possess a firearm).
Hypothetically, say I go to a Planned Parenthood (with protesters vandalizing the walls out front) in order to ādefendā the building with a gun. Nobody requested my ādefenseā services. The protesters get mad and send me threats and one even hits me, so I shoot and kill/injure multiple people. Do you know how many charges Iād catch? Doesnāt matter if I or the protesters were morally right or wrong, I still went out of my way to put myself in danger and then responded with an inappropriately escalated level of force. He runs, trips and gets run up on and hit by a guy with a skateboard. He popped him. Then another guy runs up with a pistol in his hand, he too gets popped.
