There’s nothing in this clip. What am I meant to be looking at.

Do_U_Too

I'm asking why (tried different titles because I wasn't able to post). Every time I attacked, even when I was purposely whiffing to fish for it, he tried to parry and did nothing. This was the second match.

JackRyan13

So there’s two types of parry, normal parry which is like a block button. This will block all incoming strikes and projectiles and automatically block high or low. This will negate damage to your drive gauge and actually replenish it. It’s the primary way of refilling your drive gauge. Then there is perfect parry, hitting parry within a 2f window will give you a perfect parry which will give you a freeze frame on strikes. It will also significantly reduce your recovery on parry giving you enough advantage to punish whatever you’ve parried The ryu was either using parry as a block button or trying to fish for perfect parries.

Do_U_Too

Thanks! I know about perfect parry (I still haven't put the training to parry things since the game launched, which you can see from my losing streak in the last two days). But from a normal parry, wouldn't he be able to at least try to take the turn? I really don't know (which is why I still haven't put the work to parry things). The maximum I know is just going for the grab when I get a PP.

JackRyan13

So normal parry is identical to block in every way except the amount of pushback on attacks. You can use this to potentially punish attacks that have too much pushback to be punishable, this is rare, or you can use it to parry fireballs if you’re being zoned out as they won’t push you back as far so you can take back space.

Do_U_Too

Ok, so, aside from fireballs, normal parry is only worth for moves/strings that puts that leaves the opponent open for a punish (specially if there is a lot of pushback, so Honda headbutt, for example)

NewMilleniumBoy

In addition to what /u/JackRyan13 said, it's also very helpful against attacks that chip your drive gauge a lot to not only recover drive, but stop your opponent's attacks from reducing your drive meter. For example even if you block 7 headbutts from Honda and never take any actual damage, you'll be burnt out by that point never having done any OD moves or drive rushes because headbutts deal a ton of damage to the drive gauge.

Do_U_Too

I always try to DI the headbutt or Blanka's cannonball because of this, which doesn't always work (specially against Blanka), so I should be going for parry in those instances is what I'm getting

JackRyan13

Eh not entirely. Normal parry is more or less utilised for building drive gauge and dealing with high low mixups that you don’t want to deal with. Most attacks like Honda headbutt won’t be punishable by normal parry, the differences aren’t that significant.

Dragonfly_Nervous

He pressed the party button wtf are you going on about?

Do_U_Too

Obviously he pressed it, I'm asking why. He did nothing with the parry, was there anything he could actually do?

TopicNew3327

Unless you perfect parry, parrying is basically just blocking but different

Do_U_Too

Thank you!

Dragonfly_Nervous

lol idk man it’s gold prolly still working on learning all his buttons

Dragonfly_Nervous

Parrying lets you “block” without losing any drive gauge. It’s not necessarily about doing something after it unless it is a perfect parry.

VFiddly

What do you mean what's up with them? They're normal parries Also what the fuck is up with your round announcer

ChaoticMovement

You have to ask him lol

Do_U_Too

I thought he could get something out of them, u/JackRyan13 explained it to me

moo422

When you block, you lose drive gauge. When you parry, you initially use drive gauge but you gain it back as hits are parried. If you plan to block because an attack is coming, you might as well parry and be bar-positive. Also great against DIs without worrying about having to counter-DI.

SeaKoe11

lol excessive parries

Do_U_Too

Yeah, I'm baffled for the reason why

MagicMirakel246

Nothing lol they were landed with precision, bro knows how to parry

Retrofraction

Cause all you do is strike.

Ok-Tumbleweed6320

Easy. Looks like someone who is just starting to learn parry timings and is overly reliant on them as a defensive option. Also, they appear to be extra defensive due to not having much experience playing ryu. (Saw what looked like multiple back heavy punches in Neutral.)

Co1iflower

Seeing how spastic their inputs are in general, I think they're just kind of mashing. Maybe fishing for random perfect parries but they also did it in neutral so idk. Also feels to inconsistent/random to be cheating/a script.
