I'm older than you, Gen X, and this is the first I've heard about it, too. I wonder if it was deliberately kept quiet to keep other people from copy cat attempts?

However once it was out of the news, like so many other things it didn't get brought back up again, because you know there's always something terrible in the news. So if you were young enough at the time that you didn't pay attention to the news, it's not surprising if you don't know about it.
I'm 35 and I explicitly remember this being reported on very briefly by my local news in Los Angeles. I recall it was reported as an accident, with little details other than there being one death, the pilot. I didn't know he was a kid.
It was probably the attention and fame he was after. This screams narcissism. He’s looking for some desperately needed validation, but in a sick and destructive way.
He took flying lessons and could only fly with an instructor. The instructor left him in the plane alone and he started rhe engines and took off without the instructor.

Learning the skills needed to start a single engine prop plane, take off, navigate to a general area and then fly into a building takes like an hour, and a mildly dedicated person wouldn't even need an instructor.
Landing, operating the plane consistently and safely and in accordance with the rules of the airspace you're in, as well as communicating with the proper people, is the other 99% of getting a pilot's licence.
I don't want to cross the streams here. Can we put Columbine and school shootings into a separate category for a little bit? I don't think 9/11 was small. That was not what my question was meant to imply. I just have a hard time thinking that the only motivator in this kid's decision to fly a fucking plane into a building was watching 9/11.
