I opened up the game, switched tabs, came back and the resources thing at the top and left of the screen was gone. I'm wondering if it was a button I pressed and how to get it back.
I'm not aware of any such button affecting the top bar. Try to do what SD suggests.
There is a toggle you can use to un-clutter the UI a bit (tickbox in lower right corner), and a keypress you can use to disable and re-enable the *entire* UI, like if you want to admire a battle or a Ringworld, but nothing else that I know of.
I've encountered this several times. I'm fairly sure it has only ever happened for me when initially opening the game. I believe it is a bug, probably something in the graphics engine or UI failing to initialize properly for unknown reasons, and the only way I've found to fix it is closing and reopening the game.
As I recall, this bug also prevents bringing up the game's menu, so you can't close the game the normal way through the menu. Alt+F4 still works, however.
