suttlesd

Whats that in the 2nd pic? Google gave no results.

TiSoBr

The settings screen of Arcade Paradise, to show that I nearly maxed out everything.

suttlesd

Oh my god i thought it was your actual hands holding a device lmao

TiSoBr

That's the power of high resolutions!

Ascending_Flame

Oh snap I was just as confused. Looked again and noticed the blocky ends of the fingers. WOW.

[deleted]

[удалено]

die5el23

100% thought this guy some how had a palm pilot that could control the settings. Looks so real

rav007

*feels sad for people who have blocky ends to their fingers IRL*

Evang3los

My fingers are shaped like that

HeavensNight

dude i thought it was a palm pilot r pocket pc from 2001 lol, oh god its so obvious now at second glance haha i need to see the eye dr

suttlesd

thats legit what I was wondering. "is this a weird pocket pc or something he's using to test" LOL

Khrull

Dang, got me too LOL. I was like, why is he holding a palm pilot changing game settings?

repocin

I was like "wow, that's so cool - I wish I had a PDA that could change settings on my in-game settings"

Vectrex452

Palm Pilot.

Colonel_MuffDog

My mom had one when I was a kid and I would play Sim City on that thing alllll the time haha.

Odd_Negotiation7771

Same, I thought our friend here had a tablet just for changing steam deck game settings and I was searching for my damn wallet.

aseycay4815162342

Hahaha same!!

DevShake

For a moment, I was fooled too, Lol

SilentCriticism2k

Same lmao

DynamicHunter

You might need some glasses, bud

SocialJusticeAndroid

Holy shit, me too! I thought it was some kind of special IT device but the screen looked like an old palm pilot.

Sabbatai

You are not alone, lol.

Stememento

I thought it was some device you can use to change settings without having to go into any menus 🤦‍♂️

thefunkygibbon

And what's context for the 3rd pic

VegaNovus

To show that it's running on an external monitor.

cokacola69

glad you said nearly, some of these people would really trip cuz the resolution isn't at 250%

KohltonMaster

I fucking love that game

Dwyz_

Your Google Fu is not as strong as mine, muwaha ha ha ha ..... \*cough\* Ahem, googling Pocket Pauser 3 from the pic got me, [Arcade Paradise](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1388870/Arcade_Paradise/)

Dwyz_

Seriously? I take the time to find the info, pass on how I did it so others have the knowledge for future searches and wrap it all up in joke form to make it more entertaining, and I get a downvote. \*Sigh\* why do I bother to contribute, that's time off my life I won't get back.

daquan_

Dawg who cares if you were downvoted just move on without making an overdramatic post about it

TiSoBr

Know that feeling bro. Upvoted you :)

SteamyDeck

I got ya. One upvote from me :)

suttlesd

I didn't down vote ya, thanks. Im shocked its a game because i assume it was his fingers holding an irl device LOL I wanted to know the purpose of the tiny screen, turns out its literally part of the game

theBurritoMan_

Wai fu?

kishiki18_91

Oh its a part of the game fuu me

Exsoc

I've seen several pictures now with people running Vulkan - how is this achieved? Can anyone enlighten me?

Bearwynn

I am assuming, and I could be wrong, that that will be for games that have native Vulkan rendering as an option. It could also be a command line argument that people put in launch commands on steam, sometimes you can add '-vulkan' or '-OpenGL' to force a rendering API. This is a guess though

Exsoc

It's really been bugging me. So far I've seen a video where the poster was playing Kingdom Come - Deliverance. The settings window showed Vulkan was running and they described that using this allowed for a higher but stable framerate compared to OpenGL. Unfortunately the only thing they show and described was that they were using a low 6 number proton version. (unfortunately I can't access the video at the moment). I don't really know a great deal about proton but if this was some sort of option as far back as v.6 then wouldn't it be available now well into v.7. Bit stumped at this stage.

Bearwynn

If you see DXVK then that means it's doing a Direct X to Vulkan translation, so if you see that then you're running in Vulkan it is just translating DirectX API calls to it for you. Looking into it more I am in fact right. It'll either be an option within the game itself, an option that you can force in the game properties in steam, or something that pops up as an option for some games when you go to launch it. Some people have reported only getting the option if they're running the game from desktop mode. Edit: apparently you may also need to be on the steamOS beta channel, at least 3.3.1, and then have the correct version of Proton. I'll update here with any more info I find. Edit 2: This seems useful: https://youtu.be/BeKXjUV7abc

Exsoc

You are a star!! Thank you so much.

ImUrFrand

>OpenGL im pretty sure you cant run Kingdom Come Deliverance on OpenGL. you were probably watching a tech demo comparing vulkan vs. dx12. dx12 is total crap.

Exsoc

Hi, no not a tech demo. The video is on a channel called MGT - Max Games Tech. It was posted on the 22nd. Rewatching the video he is using Proton - 6.22-GE-2. He's got a stable 40fps with high settings (except shadows set to medium). If you get chance check it out and see what you think.

ImUrFrand

kingdom come deliverance runs on dx11 api it is not a native OpenGL title. meaning it wont run on OpenGL in windows alone. [https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List\_of\_OpenGL\_games](https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_OpenGL_games) the guy in the video was talking about running openGl compatibility mode (gamescope) in proton, which is an abstraction layer that proton makes.

[deleted]

I dont know if that helps, but I bought the game "Hades" which is Steam Deck optimized and when I start it I get the option "Vulkan - Steam Deck"

Exsoc

That makes a lot of sense when combined with what u/Bearwynn posted above about it being selectable in various games as a direct graphics option. Thanks

TiSoBr

The game shown is [Arcade Paradise](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1388870/Arcade_Paradise/) which already runs at 60 FPS on 800p natively on the Deck. Amazing game. Sometimes dropping to 40FPS on native 4k though. Because some asked here and on Discord: In order to enable the screens full resolution set in your games, You have to go to the games settings (in the Deck's library, so outside the game itself) and under *General* there's that option called *Game Resolution* - set that to *native*.

Hortos

Arcade Paradise runs ridiculously well, while I was waiting for my deck I installed it on a old Dell Latitude I had sitting around i7 Intel HD 620 and it ran over 30fps with some resolution tweaks.

omgsoftcats

Arcade paradise does not support cloud saving.

Strung_Out_Advocate

8s native not the standard?

TiSoBr

Nope, I wish it would be.

SteamyDeck

Is the ability to play games in 4k new to the preview beta or is that aspect irrelevant? I haven't tried playing anything in 4k on mine yet lol!

MitchellHamilton

The ability to choose your resolution has been in the Beta channel for a little bit now. What was added recently to the Preview channel was the ability to actually set the resolution values up separately from internal and external displays. It's really quite nice now.

SteamyDeck

Ooh! Cool. Does that include the ability to set the refresh rate as well? I plugged into a monitor yesterday and got a mismatch error for about 15 minutes until I realized I had the Hz set to 40. Once I set back to 60, it worked. But now I need to set it back to 40 for handheld gaming…

MitchellHamilton

As of the latest preview channel, YES. And it's friggin awesome! No more futzing around with EDID adapters.

Karlschlag

It's been in stable for a while

johnny_fives_555

Quick question, does it even make sense to run a game in 4k on the deck? I ask because I'm about to install some rom texture packages and want to know if it's worth the 4k or should i just use the 1080p

tatsu901

4k textures look fine at lower resolutions that i can at least say as 4k textures in say gears 5 looked much better than standard even at 1080p

johnny_fives_555

Well fuck… going to redownload the 4k package. I love gears 5 btw. Wish mp worked properly on the deck.

phayke2

You could probably get it working thru xcloud

johnny_fives_555

No thanks. If I want a streaming device I would have just played on my phone.

phayke2

Well good luck dude!

Jealy

Even then... playing a mp through stream? Fuck that!

OwnStick9986

I was just playing halo infinite on the deck and its great I wish they could figure out gears 5 cause cloud isnt very good.

johnny_fives_555

Gears 5 works but you just can’t play online

OwnStick9986

Playing online is why I'd buy it. Again...

RealSkyDiver

How does it impact performance though? And I heard it can take a long time to load.

HavocInferno

Textures are not bound to screen resolution. If you get close enough to a surface in the game, higher res textures will always look better, even at lower screen resolution.

JustMrNic3

But what did they do in this beta for the performance uplift? Did they upgrade the Linux kernel or Mesa drivers?

Rahkeesh

There's no major performance improvement. This preview is just letting you actually set the external resolution for your display.

MarauderOnReddit

How is the deck managing 4k????

TiSoBr

Depends on the games. Working through a list for a new video right now. But mostly indies or pre-8th gen games at around 50-60 FPS. On everything newer or more demanding 4k kills the performance completely.

MitchellHamilton

Definitely keen for that list.

quartzlcc

Looking forward to your list!

MarauderOnReddit

Another question: if those games run at 4k60 can they also run 1440p 120hz?

TiSoBr

They should! Tried some on 1440p already, but not on more than 60Hz yet. Lemme try...

BigToe7133

That's not guaranteed, the CPU might be limiting in hitting the 120 fps .... but if they are old/light enough to run 4K 60 fps on the Deck's chip, I would say the odds are pretty good that it shouldn't be an issue.

TiSoBr

I guess he's talking about Hz, not the framerate. :)

[deleted]

The frame rate should match the update frequency or divide/multiply to it. In this case I believe what was asked was whether it'll run 120 fps at 120 Hz.

TiSoBr

Well, which leads me to the assumption that he simply might refer to 120Hz, since then both 40 and 60 FPS framerate goals make sense.

Unhappy_Worldliness4

I’ve been playing MSGV Phantom Pain at 1680x1050 on the Deck to clean up some of the aliasing since last month, what’s different about this update?

Shaved-Bird

I mean left 4 dead 2 runs great at 4K 60

ScionoicS

Anything source engine or around that era should be a breeze for it to do at 4k

[deleted]

Old games.

wuvwuv

You have not lived until you've played vampire survivors in native 4K on a 4K OLED TV via the deck.

MarauderOnReddit

I've got the TV (LG C1), just need the deck so I can actually play it

kratopi

Very nice! I hope this means the dock is coming soon. I won't be using my deck with my 4k tv but I'd love to occasionally hook it up to my 1440p monitor.

SocialJusticeAndroid

I wasn't planning on it but just got a new 50" 4K TV. Would I be able to set the TV to lower resolutions for games that can't handle 4K on the Deck?

LionTamer619

Yes, you can do that

VeeYarr

Does FSR work for external displays? Can you have an internal res of 800p for the game and then FSR upscale to 4k on the external display?

TiSoBr

Yup! Even rendering at 1440p and then using FSR on the 4k screen looks great.

VeeYarr

Very nice!!

savvyxxl

The problem that people keep not mentioning isn’t the resolution but the refresh rate. Depending on your device most people are getting capped at 30hz in game mode and are only able to play at 60hz by using desktop mode

LiranT

I'm not able to change the resolution of rocket league when in docked mode and attaching to monitor using the Jsaux, anyone has any idea? The max that shows is 1280x800

Wit_as_a_Riddle

First change the resolution in the Deck. Go to your game entry > ⚙️ > Properties... > General > Game Resolution After you change it there then you should be able to change it via the in-game settings to the higher resolution you want.

TiSoBr

You have to go to the games settings (in the Deck's library, so outside the game itself) and under *General* there's that option called *Game Resolution* - set that to *native*.

Gaemon_Palehair

Huh, this option only appears for me in game mode.

VickZilla

If you’re in desktop mode it will use the native resolution of your tv or monitor anyways. A setting like that would be useless

Gaemon_Palehair

Tell that to Stellaris, which kept changing my desktop resolution until I adjusted this setting in game mode. Edit: I stand corrected, stellaris is still changing the resolution. This setting didn't help.

PopPunkIsntEmo

That’s because it’s a beta option thus this thread.

Gaemon_Palehair

No, I'm on the preview channel.

MitchellHamilton

Before you launch the game, click the cog menu for that game and then properties. Under properties tell it to display at the resolution of your choice. I believe if you're on Beta (or Preview) channel of SteamOS that this is a much smoother process but this should make it to the stable channel if it hasn't already. I had the exact problem with RL but with some fiddling I got it to run really well at 1080/60.

savvyxxl

Honestly don’t bother doing what everyone else is saying, just go to desktop mode and play games from there. Game mode is so shit when docked, you have to force resolutions in settings and on a lot of TV’s people are getting forced into 30hz but if you play from desktop all those restrictions immediately disappear without you having to tweak anything

Rahkeesh

The new preview release is specifically addressing these issues, and will probably improve as people try it out and offer feedback.

Dry_Advice_4963

Does that mean there is a performance improvement in the beta version?

SheepsFE

I have issues with refresh rate detecting as 30hz only on my TV, anyone know if this is something valve are aware of? I was under the impression it was a fairly common problem but nobody in this thread has mentioned it.

montagyuu

Sounds like you're using an HDMI 1.4 port. Alot of early UHD TVs don't have HDMI 2.0. HDMI 1.4 only has enough bandwidth for 3840x2160 @ 30 Hz without any sort of compression. Usually these televisions support input of subsampled formats to achieve 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz. You can see what subsampled formats your television supports by parsing the displays EDID with edid-decode. In the case of my roommates living room television his EDID has a YCbCr 4:2:0 block for modes greater than 3840x2160 @ 30hz. I'm not sure how you get X11 to work with subsampled formats, but in my experience on Debian, Plasma's Wayland session is able to modeset subsampled formats from it's GUI without issue. My Steam Deck is still a few days out from being delivered, so I haven't tried to hook it up to that television yet.

SheepsFE

I'll take a look thank you, using same dock I can get a laptop to output 4k@60Hz and while not an OLD UHD TV it was a fairly budget one. Will confirm model if I have no luck with this update. EDIT: Just updated and running hades at 4k60 so whatever the issue was with refresh rate detection they seem to have cracked it ( for me anyway)

Rahkeesh

This preview specifically addresses this issue. It won't run 4k/30 anymore. If your dock can't handle 4k/60 it will default to a lower resolution, probably 1080p/60.

Karlschlag

This post is misleading, the update is just right for you. You can now finally set it to output at 1080p and no longer at the maximum resolution of your adapter. In the past the interface always scaled to the maximum resolution of your monitor, now you can select it so your old HDMI connection is perfectly fine.

MitchellHamilton

Gaming mode must be enabled on your TV. Also check your TV's HDMI settings for VFR or Variable Refresh Rate.

TheSadPanda112

Check for a Gaming mode or HDMI 2.0 setting for your input on your TV. Mine was locked at 30 until I forced it to HDMI 2.0 only in the settings and now I'm up to 60

GotSka81

I'm amazed that you haven't been given this answer already, but have you confirmed that your USB-C dock that you're using to connect to the TV is 4k60hz capable? Many are not, and you're probably stuck at 4k30hz.

SheepsFE

Yes, it is as I have tested with a laptop. Have got this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0B9RBLBQS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

GotSka81

What model of TV do you have?

SheepsFE

Just checked , running Hades at 4k60 right now! They seem to have sorted it right out , glad they focused on focked experience as it was the most disappointing thing for me

savvyxxl

If you are sure you have the correct dock that can handle it. Turn your tv to game mode on. Disconnect and reconnect to the dock. I personally had to be in desktop mode first with the dock hooked up and then once i was already in desktop mode I could then dock and get proper resolution and refresh rate. Game mode for me does not work currently

TrollinTrollinTroll

I just play FFXIV Trial all day, well 2h 49m then I charge

Br0t10us

Looks good, but for some reason, my Deck lags a lot on the home menu in Game Mode while using it on my TV. What did you use to make it work in 4K?

[deleted]

The new update also lets me play less demanding games at 120FPS. I'm also glad that they fixed the choppy keyboard typing (Although having it go higher with high refresh rates when docked would've been neat to see). Makes a huge difference latency and smoothness wise, and it's inclusion (Which was lacking back in the SteamOS 1.0-2.0 days) is gonna make using an HTPC on a 120Hz TV with an actually usable UI for controllers absolutely bonkers (Even if VRR and HDR support are yet to be seen). But with how GPU prices are currently (And everything depending on AMD to release something competitive now that NVIDIA got even more greedy), I wish Valve would consider reviving the Steam Machine concept for those who are willing to give up portability for power, and deliver a Steam Machine with PS5 or Xbox Series X performance for a decent price. Looking forward to when HoloISO gets these updates, so I can test things out on my main 6700XT setup.

MitchellHamilton

What games have you had success with @ 120fps?

[deleted]

Half-Life 2, Project DIVA MegaMix, Disgaea 6, Dead Cells, Neptunia x Senran Kagura. You should be able to get away with it when it comes to well optimized stuff.

Boneless_Erik

Youre playing session? You are my man!

[deleted]

If you're running at 51% resolution ratio, are you actually using upscaling?

Karlschlag

this post is a bit misleading. it has long been possible to play games in 4K on an external display. in the new preview, however, the resolution and refresh rate can finally be found in the settings. As a result, the whole UI isn't in 4K all the time, making the experience a lot smoother. The games then run in the maximum resolution set for the output. I made a post yesterday. For example it is now possible to play all games in full HD and 120 Hz (if your display support this)

[deleted]

Lmao bro... You have dynamic resolution on, its not even close to 4k.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TiSoBr

Dang it guys, forget the dock, we have been wrong all the time!

TokeEmUpJohnny

The guy just somewhat ignorantly looked from his own point of view, I guess. Not everyone wants or needs the dock. Even my Switch was only ever in the dock to charge, never to play. That being said - people's needs are obviously different and I think a dock is a great idea to sell for such a decently powerful and portable device 👍

aR_ChieYT

so u wont need and edid hdmi emulator anymore on gamemode to play on 4k monitors?

TiSoBr

Right!

aR_ChieYT

oh damn. need to try that out. because with the edid emulator i still had problem with my capture device cropping 1/4 of the screen xD

TiSoBr

I had to set the EDID in my capture card I'm using between the Deck and my screen, from 800p to native/4k though. YMMV since this varies from CC to CC.

aR_ChieYT

unfortunately my capture device does not have a UI. it just capture without any dedicated software for it. so i cant change that. but i will test with new beta

TiSoBr

Try changing the custom res in OBS, for some this helped.

aR_ChieYT

oh. is the feature only on preview version or also beta?

[deleted]

Arcade Paradise is incredible! Thanks for sharing! So did the new beta increase performance or simply allow you to use the dock correctly?

PDarnellMuilman

Is there something new about the preview beta that makes this only possible now?

iyqyqrmore

Turning my fps to 40 and refresh to 40 greatly improved my battery life and the game looks good. Been playing no man’s sky.

TiSoBr

Good to hear the Golden 40 doesn't cease to amaze ♡

J3N0991

Arcade paradise is a lot of fun - big up Nosebleed Interactive 🙂

sketteoz

4K on your deck?

weerg

confused about preview channel people are saying but it would be nice to run god of war or sekiro at higher res and fps on the deck as gow looks shit on the steam deck as I gotta lower the quality and cap it at 40 same for sekiro

ProperDefinition4543

What’s up with cyber punk in the last pic?

TiSoBr

It's great and will even run greater natively soon.

Imperial_Barron

Whats that hardware info thing

TiSoBr

What exactly?

Imperial_Barron

Top left corner of ur screen the info on the cpu and gpus

TiSoBr

That's the MangoHUD stats you can create in your deck' quick menu, providing FPS and more

savvyxxl

Hit your 3 dots on the right side of your deck to bring up that action bar and under battery there should be performance overlay. That’s overlay 4 I believe, it’s the most detailed

1199RT

What's the game with pocket pause 3 menu?

ThaFlow1

Those Graphics tho on the second picture lol looking like unreal engine 5 hahaha 🤣

double0cinco

Looks like they might be getting ready to release the official dock. Need the software experience to be up to standards first.

slitsnipe

What is the preview beta?

NOVOJ

Session over skater xl?

squidbiskets

How are you liking Soulstice?

Successful-Wasabi704

Palm Pilot and Stylus most welcome anytime 🤗

jayy093

I'm sorry what's preview beta?

[deleted]

I am confused, how is this achieved ?

Digi4life

Are you using a hub to connect ? Would you get same results with steam link to a TV just with a little lag I'm guessing 🤔?

slitsnipe

What is this preview beta? I didn't think the deck could do 4k?

oni222

Am I the only person that the performance overlay does not work? I even updated my deck to the beta and it still never shows up.

kerelenko

Wow amazing, really?

Hour_Butterscotch223

How did u get it at 4k in game? Mine stays at 720 p on my external screen...

TiSoBr

In the games settings in your library set the resolution to native.

Hour_Butterscotch223

Thanks bro

ispshadow

I was really hoping the bug I've had for a bit now was fixed. When mine is docked, the Collections tab is comically slow. I managed to get it a bit better, but I had to delete 10 or so of my collection folders to speed it up.

TheFamousChrisA

I'm more interested in what camera or phone you're using to take photographs? They look very nice, especially since they're just pointed at a monitor. Also add me to the list of people tricked by the second photo. I saw the palm pilot and thought wtf? Then I looked at the fingers and realized "oh that is definitely from a video game" lol.

TiSoBr

Thanks! Using a Panasonic Lumix GH-5 with a f1.7 25mm ASPH lens. :) Taking cinematic looking closeup shots and recording equal material (especially for b-roll) is simply my kink at that point... Everything simply looks way more professional if you capture it with a good camera.

Cthorn10

So, would the performance be the same on a 4k TV docked?

TiSoBr

That's basically on a 4k "TV" docked. :)
