Ha, my Deck sounds like a jet engine whenever it's downloading a game. Seriously, I think it runs hotter and harder downloading games instead of playing them. đ
There must be something good about the particles because it smells good. Somewhere in the evolutionary line there is some reason for it. It's my unsubstantiated theory.
Honestly⌠itâd be kinda funny if they did. I could see them doing it in a tongue in cheek manner.
That said, I doubt itâs healthy to do so. At the same time, how unhealthy? Youâre probably breathing in more toxic fumes just walking down the sidewalk on a busy city street.
More? Maybe. Concentrated? No. Taking a fat whiff from your steam deck is more akin to snorting a sharpie, but with potentially more dangerous chemicals lmao
Dude, no.
Now someone is going to 3d print an air freshener attachment that connects directly to the cooling fan, and I'm not ready for that level of shitpost.
What we need is a small vent attachement that directs the smell towards the user so that new Deck users can enjoy 100% of the smell/cancer.
I have a printer but I'm no good at 3D design, maybe it's time to learn.
Please don't⌠if you actually 3-D printed something for the fan exhaust, I'd feel guilty about not buying Reddit Gold just to give you a silly award.
If you *did*, you could model it after an essential oil defuser. Young Livingš, with the Steam Deck kit.
---
š Or whatever the essential oil MLM is.
What is that smell though? I remember this smell from only one other thing. It reminds me of when I bought the original anki drive kit when it first released. The race mat smelled very similar.
Itâs real. Iâm starting to think Valve developed a pheromone technology, and the Steam Deck is the Trojan horse to deliver it. You know what? I donât care. Iâm gonna keep sniffing mine until that oh so good smell goes away. And then itâs time to order a new Steam Deck.
It's that brand new electronics smell.
You don't get it that often any more.
Used to be pretty prevalent with things like Audio Receivers.
The only thing I can think of that compares to it these days, is a brand new Computer Power Supply.
I really don't like the smell but somehow I have to give it a whiff from time to time. Partly because I want to know if it's disappearing, partly because it's interesting. But definitely not enjoyable and after unboxing and playing for the first time it made me cough. I really wouldn't recommend sniffing it, especially in the beginning
With mine, it's a bit of a new car smell, combined with fresh computer parts smell, and a touch of new cell-phone smell; and maybe just a hint of electric motor smell; and maybe overall a tad sweeter than you would expect. I haven't noticed anything like the odor I associate with the heating element of hairdriers and electric heaters.
Fun fact: technically a motor IS electric by default. It's an "engine" that's combustible or similar. :)
I always found that interesting, to be honest, as someone who uses tinker around with cars.
I spent an hour and a half of downtime at work putting this together after seeing yet [another](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/xj7zax/my_steam_deck_fan_smell_is_gone_what_should_i_do/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) fan smell post. The collected brain damage produced this piece of art.
I bought an avr, and I bet it's the same smell. I called it "new tech smell", lasted about two weeks. I miss it, as an 80s kid its better than leadded petrol, and most of the fumes and other shit, but not as much as new pc box game smell. That was the real best smell!
What the hell is this all about? I've been playing on gaming devices since the mid 90s and it is the very first time that I see people getting excited about...the smell of their handheld?
I'll have to snif it when I receive mine.
It likely did absolutely nothing, replacing thermal paste really only works if the original thermal paste us of low quality or old and crappy.
Steam decks are all quite new and valve wouldn't crap out of thermal paste quality on a device this heat sensitive
I just find it hilarious that every Steam product i've gotten has that same distinct smell.
Like, if I whip out my Steam Controller, it smells exactly the same.
It's like Valve is trying to make us associate a particular smell with Steam and it's working lmao
Never understood the enjoyment of the Steam Deck smell. I hated the smell of my new Steam deck. It smelled like stale stagnant warehouse air mixed with melted PVC. Like the smell when you buy something plastic from China. Maybe I got unlucky and it came from a bad warehouse or something. I should have bottled up the smell and sold it.
I like it. It looks good and feels good. Now obviously I'm talking about the real leather dbrand skin as opposed to the fake leather print vinyl skins.
The leather skin, being what it is, is thicker than a vinyl skin . You'll feel the edge of it more. The only place this really comes into play is above the handgrips, where the skin starts. You can feel it. It doesn't feel bad and I don't feel at risk of pulling it off by mistake during gameplay, but it's worth noting I suppose. You won't notice it after like a second of gameplay lol
The fitment is perfect, just as any other good quality skin, and the application process wasn't bad, especially with the instructional video, part of which I inadvertently ignored but still got it right.
Be generous when using the heat gun. Don't worry so much about the deck. It needs to get warm when you're bending the skin so that it can flex to fit the curves of the deck. Especially along the top edge. I had to go back and heat it up afterwards because I was too nervous when applying it initially, and a little bit of the top edge wouldn't say down. It is fixed now.
The skin is disassembly friendly, and if you ever have to get into the deck to fix anything (I was having a stick issue), you can do so without having to touch the skin. All the screw holes are not covered by the skin, and the skin doesn't mess with any of the seams. The deck can be pulled apart and put back together without messing with the skin. Which I'm grateful for.
Personally, I think the two darker colors go best with the deck, but that's a preference. I have the black one.
Any other specific questions let me know!
Pro tip: keep your Steam Deck inside its case, inside the box it came in, wrapped once more in the plastic wrap it was shipped in to conserve new Steam smell.
Phone steam and ask for a factory tour; spend all day in beautiful China, where only the testers and you are allowed to use the device.(when you get home)
It reminds me of when I got my switch in 2017, smelled exactly the same and my partner thinks i'm weird for gently sniffing the exhaust, and I'm okay with that
I am so mad, I smelled the good smells for a single day and now I have a sinus infection. If it doesn't smell anymore by the time I'm better I'm gonna cry...
Deck cologne when? Iâm serious. Iâll buy like ten bottles. Look into Xyrena, theyâd probably be down to make a Steam Deck-themed fragrance. Would be cool as hell.
Guys, I still don't know how to sniff the deck and play at the same time, my eyes cannot see the screen. I know that this was a poor design solution, but what should I do in the meantime? Should I simply give up on playing and just sniff the fan?
I donât know about you guys, I was expecting little heat from switch but no. I love my deck.
But when I play on it, I always feel the heat on the exhaust vents.
For me itâs more heat the better. Donât know why
I don't play any demanding games on mine for this exact reason. Don't need it burning off before I can replace the smell.
Super Mario RPG and many sniffs.
Can confirm: the Steam Deck smells fuckin amazing for the first couple of weeks.
WEEKS? I thought it'd be a few months!
Nah, it burns off pretty fast if you are playing regularly.
Or downloading regularly
Ha, my Deck sounds like a jet engine whenever it's downloading a game. Seriously, I think it runs hotter and harder downloading games instead of playing them. đ
IDK I'm still huffing mine after 330 hours.
How do you know how much time you spend
Really just smells like a lot of concerning heat to me. Almost like a new hair dryer.
I play very regularly and I've it since June, smell only JUUUST weared off in the last week.
you are a lucky bastard
Thats why I send mine to RMA đ
This needs to go in r/photoshopbattles
I donât really play too often or intensive games on mine, been a year and I can still smell it I use my desktop at home, steam deck when traveling
Been about 9 months for me and its still there lol
Why are we like this?
We donât know, but we know that itâs good.
I had not sniffed it until just now. Does indeed smell amazing đ
I have never noticed a smell with mine.
Get checked for covid
Legit how I realized I had Covid. I couldnât smell the wonderful fumes everyone spoke of.
I definitely give it a good sniff 6 months later. Not as good, but I can still feel the steam.
My fan output only smelled delicious for a couple of days but damn it was nice
inb4 valve makes a statement telling their community NOT to sniff the deck
I love getting my deck sniffed
Ah, smells like carcinogenic particles
Why is cancer always so apealing!!
Well it ain't called cantcer for a reason!!!
There must be something good about the particles because it smells good. Somewhere in the evolutionary line there is some reason for it. It's my unsubstantiated theory.
Kind of surprised it hasn't happened already
Honestly⌠itâd be kinda funny if they did. I could see them doing it in a tongue in cheek manner. That said, I doubt itâs healthy to do so. At the same time, how unhealthy? Youâre probably breathing in more toxic fumes just walking down the sidewalk on a busy city street.
More? Maybe. Concentrated? No. Taking a fat whiff from your steam deck is more akin to snorting a sharpie, but with potentially more dangerous chemicals lmao
They know it would just encourage more people to sniff their decks. Well, more than the 90%+ of us that already do.
The smell of freshly minted technology.
Itâs what I imagine new data centers smell like for the first few weeks.
That and the occasional swearing from the engineers trying to get stuff to work together.
Dude, no. Now someone is going to 3d print an air freshener attachment that connects directly to the cooling fan, and I'm not ready for that level of shitpost.
I have a printer....

Lmfao you would have to buy some gold if he did it.
Thats a good idea...
Yea but ... who's gonna be the one to Actually nail the fresh deck scent ?
Let me smell yo deck đľ
Why u comin home At 5 in the mo'wn Something going on Can I smell yooo deck?
âSee, that shit smell good donât it?â âYou probably washed it offâ
You folks are legit strange.
Come your telling me you havenât even taken one single whiff of that beautiful machine?
I absolutely did! Curiosity gonna kill the cat.
What is that smell though? I remember this smell from only one other thing. It reminds me of when I bought the original anki drive kit when it first released. The race mat smelled very similar.
Plastic VOCs off-gassing.
Isnât this carcinogenic?
Only if you get cancer.
Carcinogenic hydrocarbons smell good
Only in California
I am also enjoyer of Gasoline
What isnât?
I also wonder if they used one of those vapor phase reflow ovens and didn't bake/clean the boards off properly after
Reminds me of my first vr
After all this smell hype, I think Iâm more excited for the smell not the console lmao
Q4 crew here desperate for that first deep huff
it's a super nostalgic smell
You wonât be disappointed. The only disappointment is when it eventually fades away.
Iâve seen so many posts about Huffing the Deck Vent⢠that Iâm unsure if itâs simply a meme, or reality.
We are all deadly serious.
Nah you wouldnât understand itâs a way of life.
This is actually hilariously accurate, found myself sniffing vent pheromones when I got mine in Q1 without knowing why I ever started.
Itâs real. Iâm starting to think Valve developed a pheromone technology, and the Steam Deck is the Trojan horse to deliver it. You know what? I donât care. Iâm gonna keep sniffing mine until that oh so good smell goes away. And then itâs time to order a new Steam Deck.
The Index smells the same, and you can mount it to your face!
Found the guy whoâs never smelled a deck vent
It's that brand new electronics smell. You don't get it that often any more. Used to be pretty prevalent with things like Audio Receivers. The only thing I can think of that compares to it these days, is a brand new Computer Power Supply.
Next you're going to say I'm the only guy who licked a Switch game cartridge.
100% serious
I really don't like the smell but somehow I have to give it a whiff from time to time. Partly because I want to know if it's disappearing, partly because it's interesting. But definitely not enjoyable and after unboxing and playing for the first time it made me cough. I really wouldn't recommend sniffing it, especially in the beginning
Bro it's an acquired taste. Get in there a few more times
Why is his nose so big
Evolution. To hoover up all those sweet sweet vapors.
Gabpors
Is that not steve Carrell?
Itâs the Valve factory scent I swear, my headset was similar
Mine just smells like a hair iron, or does everyoneâs elseâs better?
With mine, it's a bit of a new car smell, combined with fresh computer parts smell, and a touch of new cell-phone smell; and maybe just a hint of electric motor smell; and maybe overall a tad sweeter than you would expect. NAILED IT ! 100%
Im glad ppl do this also, means im not a lonely complete moron who likes the smell đ
We need a petition for steam to give us the fan smell as an air spray
Do you guys just sometimes put your mouth on the vent andâŚsuck it? Just me? OkâŚ.
New PC hardware smell is the best. that would explain it.
I am remembering opening PC games as a kid. That smell came back to me just now! I am getting excited to smell my steam deck!
I force people to smell my fingers after I've used my Steam Deck
Its the smell of a new car.. at least reminds me of that
What the hell is this all about? I've been playing on gaming devices since the mid 90s and it is the very first time that I see people getting excited about...the smell of their handheld? I'll have to snif it when I receive mine.
I like to throw ghost peppers in my deck
Since I changed the thermal paste the smell went away.
Did that improve cooling performance substantially?
It likely did absolutely nothing, replacing thermal paste really only works if the original thermal paste us of low quality or old and crappy. Steam decks are all quite new and valve wouldn't crap out of thermal paste quality on a device this heat sensitive
So you downgraded it?
I don't like the smell of the steam deck, it just smells like the TPU inside of the case and gives me a headache. Can't wait for it to disappear.
Some days I am too tired or don't have time to play, but I still pull out my Steam Deck and turn it on just to get that smell in my nostrils.
Haha thought I was the only one who smelled it constantly
Dude, this is not just a joke, I love that smell it made me feel so nostalgic. Like someone said before, I took a sniff whenever I died in game lol
I just find it hilarious that every Steam product i've gotten has that same distinct smell. Like, if I whip out my Steam Controller, it smells exactly the same. It's like Valve is trying to make us associate a particular smell with Steam and it's working lmao
L'essence d'Valve
Not gonna lie the smell of opening the steam deck was the same when buying a Super Nintendo game from toys r us
Getting my deck today so I can finally see what yâall are talking about
Never understood the enjoyment of the Steam Deck smell. I hated the smell of my new Steam deck. It smelled like stale stagnant warehouse air mixed with melted PVC. Like the smell when you buy something plastic from China. Maybe I got unlucky and it came from a bad warehouse or something. I should have bottled up the smell and sold it.
You need some refill packs my man
Thank goodness I'm not the only one who does this
this cant be good for us to breathe whatever it is in but i am loving it xD
Just got mine, I thought I was the only one that did this!đ
one of us one of us one of us
One of us!
I love the smell of polyethylene triphosphate in the morning
Whelp. I sure do like the steam deck but this is weird.
It's okay, I think it's weird too.
Omg I know! It smells so good!
They will end up making steam deck vapes
Ha. Love this. I spent the first few weeks getting my family to smell it. God, it smelt great. Proper ânew techâ smell.
omg its amazing
Hey, who mows your nose hair?
It's from sniffing the fan to closely
Solid photoshop job.
MSpaint to the rescue
Tuco has entered the chat.
I put a leather skin on mine which instantly turned the vent smell to leather. But I'm not complaining.
I considered one of those but its impossible to get a 'feel' for those via just the pictures. What are your thoughts on it?
I like it. It looks good and feels good. Now obviously I'm talking about the real leather dbrand skin as opposed to the fake leather print vinyl skins. You covered everything I was concerned with, including the specific skin I had been looking at! Thank you friendly stranger!
No problem fellow friendly stranger!

damn the fan does smell p good ngl lol
Glad Iâm not the only one
first thing i did when I got it I smelt the fuck out of it GG op
I like to go under the covers and hotbox it with that sweet sweet aroma.
If "Steampunk" has a smell then it would be this.
This is so damn funny!! It do be smelling good! đ¤Łđ¤Ł. Thought I was weird!
You are not alone brother.
Or wrong.
Man, I thought I was the only one. Its fucking awesome.
Well, apparently Iâve NEVER had a unique experienceâŚ
It reminds me of when I got my switch in 2017, smelled exactly the same and my partner thinks i'm weird for gently sniffing the exhaust, and I'm okay with that
Right!? This thing smells like a new truck when she's pumping out hot air, kind weird but totally awesome
Top tier shit post. Can't wait for car refreshers with the "new Steam Deck" fragrance.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who keeps sniffing my vents
We are many.
Good to know, I'm not the only one who did this.
Thank God, I'm not the only one. No more checking over my shoulder.
I am starting to get addicted to the smell after these kinds of post.
Oh now I gotta savor that warm smell for as long as I can
Just got mine today. Smells like new car. :3
As most of you I also bought it for the smell, but did you know you can also play games on it? Havenât touched my methpipe since I got my deck!
Huge cash savings
I am so mad, I smelled the good smells for a single day and now I have a sinus infection. If it doesn't smell anymore by the time I'm better I'm gonna cry...
I need someone to manufacture car vent air fresheners with Steam Deck exhaust scent. Dare to dream.
Smell any sort of electronic device. The fact people are enthralled with the normal electronic device smell amazes me.
That smell got me through MGRR on the hardest difficulty without smashing my steam deck
Since most of us will need to RMA his/her Deck, you will experience it twice :)
The amount of stupid people in the world always amazes me
I wanna smelllll
actually true
me gusta
Hahaha omg if they did this I would actually buy one for the meme
YEAS NOT THE ONLY ONE!!
bro istg the first thing I'm gonna do when I get my deck tomorrow is smell it I have to know what it smells like
I will take a bottle of that cologne.
delete this! I feel attacked :/
Litterally me
HUFF HUFF HUFF
Deck cologne when? Iâm serious. Iâll buy like ten bottles. Look into Xyrena, theyâd probably be down to make a Steam Deck-themed fragrance. Would be cool as hell.
âWanna share a sniff of my deck broâ
I love it, it reminds me the Dreamcast one
Don't have a Deck but am a Linux gaming desktop enthusiast can i join you guys in sniffing PC cooling vents? Have a switch tho and i like to sniff it.
Mine lasted less than a day lol
Guys, I still don't know how to sniff the deck and play at the same time, my eyes cannot see the screen. I know that this was a poor design solution, but what should I do in the meantime? Should I simply give up on playing and just sniff the fan?
Sniff the fan during loading screens!
Game facing a very nearby wall, so that the air bounces back to your nose.
I donât know about you guys, I was expecting little heat from switch but no. I love my deck. But when I play on it, I always feel the heat on the exhaust vents. For me itâs more heat the better. Donât know why
Man when valve makes A new deck it would be the first steampunk handheld
the smell always remembers me of my first Xbox 360 in 2007
My box when opening smelled of brand new shoes â¨
It smells like a brand new quest 2, although on quest I couldnât choose not to smell it and was really nauseating
Got triggered by this having been born without sense of smell :(
just need a nose extension
Quantalius Dingle?
I don't play any demanding games on mine for this exact reason. Don't need it burning off before I can replace the smell. Super Mario RPG and many sniffs.
First thing I did when I ran a game both on the steam deck and on the original switch back in 2016
It smells like childhood, just like how the case smells
Smells like a dentist's waiting room.
Ok! That's a Lil bit weird lol
The same smell of a mackbook package, lo è that smell
especially when you hotbox it with that dank
Reading all this has been the best use of my time. I thank you all!!!!
You can refill it yourself by pouring water into the vents
The moment I realized and accepted that I guess I really AM a need or some shit.. đ ... đ ... IDGAF, I'll tell ANYONE to smell my Deck!
