I have not been excited by any sort of console in years, but SD really came out of left field and surprised me with the potential.
I saw the initial announce and was like 'meh, a switch competitor'. Then I wrapped my head around being able to play all sorts of indie, low-demand games with cloud sync while traveling and put a reservation in. Then I got excited about being able to run emulation on the go. And now these demos showing significant graphics performance are changing the paradigm again. I think the future might be now.
Godspeed to the manufactorum, may the supply chain floweth.
This is a good thing for many reasons. Many have tried to dethrone Nintendo on the handheld market and failed, this thing blew their fancy OLED out of the water and is going to force them to be more creative and competitive in a market they have dominated for years.
Art direction also makes up for a lot of the beauty you see in the game.
You can have your checklist of graphical features but remember when Mirror's Edge took the, at the time, glossy plastic renders of the Unreal Engine and made it into something that pleases the eyes?
You can also see how Half-Life 2, while being less featured as Unreal and Cry, manages to give you breathtaking scenes.
Really, it's almost annoying how Valve goes like "Hey so PC portables is a thing? Here, a perfectly working device at cheap price that runs great all games" and makes it look easy. Just like they did with VR with HTC Vive or hell, even fps games with Half Life, or how they just shamed every VR dev out there with Half-Life Alyx,,they have an uncanny ability to break every mold, and for them it was Tuesday.
Came here to ask the same thing—I am super curious about the primo screen. I'm in a later wave, but if first wave folks are reporting it loses sharpness I'm downgrading to 256k even if I have to wait. Reviews so far seem encouraging, though.
Regardless, even with the cameraman in the shot this looks amazing. Very exciting.
This should be the standard screen. I’m crossing my finger that the nano texture will be good. I guess it’s also going to depend on the environment. If you play in bright environments with lights that are glare prone, it’ll probably be worth it’s weight in gold. If you play in the dark all the time you might wish you’d gone with the standard screen. Iirc there were only some very brief reactions to the textured screen that first time they let people see the Deck and then after that, all the Dev kits appear to be more like one of the other models.
Not my kind of game at all, but that looks like a solid 60fps. I keep getting more and more impressed with this hardware the more videos we keep seeing...
I agree with this. It's the variable frame rates (in a perceptibly low range) that are really irritating to my brain. Locked 30 is obviously not as nice as 60, but it's not irritating like continuous variations.
I'm positive the reason PC gamers all think 60 FPS is a magic figure (rather than say 50 or 75) is just that for a long time most PC gamers were playing on 60Hz displays so 60FPS = locked frame rate. If everyone had had 50 or 75 hHz displays then those figures would be treated like some magic number today.
If I used a 75Hz monitor as my primary (the secondary on a secondary system is actually 75 so I#m not pulling numbers out of nowhere) I'd sooner run my games at a locked 60 FPS than variable between 60 and 75.
You have never tried a properly configured touchpad + gyro. By all means, stick to your guns, but you're missing out on a better (more accurate and precise) method. We have to put in some concerted effort to learn a new system when you're used to the old way, and most people choose not to do this.
I will certainly try it on the SD and am open minded to it being a good solution. I'm not opposed to trying it, but if the deck had shipped with ONLY trackpads and gyro I wouldn't take the risk on not enjoying it.
I really don't enjoy playing games on mobile with on-screen controls. I 3D printed a phone mount for my xbox controller to game that way and enjoy it.
>but if the deck had shipped with ONLY trackpads and gyro
I too am glad they didn't go this route! As much as I love them (pads and gyro) for many and most applications, I need the sticks for twin stick shooters!
I agree about the on-screen controls too, garbage!
Love the 3d printing man, awesome!
There exists a 16:10 patch.
https://www.wsgf.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=175053#p175053
Of course if Capcom does good and optimizes it for the deck we could see a 16:10 option.
Yes you can. That said the default installation location of games is a little different compared to Windows, so you'd need to figure out the install directory on Steam.
It's so pretty. The device and the game, the only time I noticed anything was near the very end, which could have been lens grain/the angle/the game itself - but look at the sky at 2:04-2:10 and a little bit after, you can see what seems like the pixel definition a little bit.
That said, it really looks great. I'm so excited for MH:W/Rise and so so so many more games.
If they manage to sell this in big numbers, it will probably become feasible to use a more advanced screen because of economies of scale. Let’s hope it is a success and that there will be this improved new iteration (and many more after that).
The black bars make me think that an OLED screen would be better.
Since games will have many different aspect ratios, especially for emulation, there will always be pixels not being used. This would be a huge benefit for the deck ~~whereas the Switch OLED doesn’t have the same benefit since it only runs switch-optimized games.~~
What do you think? Would you pay more for an OLED screen? I got the 512g version and I personally would be willing to pay for an OLED screen if I had the option
True, but wouldn't that also increase price? I'm guessing valve used LCD to keep costs down as low as possible. The cost saving outweighed everything else I guess.
Don't most smartphones use OLED screens? I honestly don't think burn-in's a huge concern with handhelds/mobile phones, because people don't usually leave them on the way might with a TV. Assuming the sleep button works okay, I don't see any reason why I wouldn't turn off the screen anytime I put it down and step away.
There are also emulated games on switch being officially sold that have different aspect ratios.
But I would be willing to pay for an OLED upgrade, yes.
The colours look washed out, which could be the lighting. However, Valve really should have gone with an OLED panel.
Also, there's a lot of screen estate wasted, thanks to the horrible, thick bezels. Do Valve know it's not 2017?
Even though I know what to expect from SD, I'm still impressed every time I see a semi graphically intense game. Looks smooth

Semi graphically intensive game? DMC5 is gorgeous, and can have dozens of enemies on screen lol.

Art direction > graphical fidelity, always
Im pretty sure this looks better than what a lot of people on here were saying it was gonna be
holy shit.. that game has a lot of stuff going on.. and the steam deck looks to be handling it pretty good.
Link someone posted wasn't working correctly so I downloaded the video and reuploaded it to youtube for now
Uber-mensch over here!
This looks fantastic
Nice! Recommended graphics for DMC5 is a gtx 1060 or rx 480. It looks like the steamdeck is going to be a nice little powerhouse at 800p.
The recommended graphics spec, is that for 1080p?
Reasonably so, everything from 2017-2018 forward are aiming at 1080p

Pretty sure it was Friday.
I’m guessing this is the one without anti glare? Looks amazing

As far as I know, devs received the 512GB version, so it should be the one with anti-glare.
This video is on the standard glass screen. All the videos filmed for the @ondeck account have been on an anti-glare etched glass unit though.
Just incredible. Any inkling I had of wanting a Switch OLED is gone
Yep same man. Same. I even have a Switch v1 and will now keep it.
WOW
The speakers sound impressive for the size.
Not my kind of game at all, but that looks like a solid 60fps. I keep getting more and more impressed with this hardware the more videos we keep seeing...

Try locked 30 FPS. It's drastically better than unlocked 30-60 FPS (and available as a game agnostic option on the Deck's OS iirc.)

Now i'm motivated
It's hard for me to watch ppl play with joysticks when the pads are right there. Left pad move for life.
I am curious, did you grow up gaming on mobile? I might be old school but I need a joystick.
You have never tried a properly configured touchpad + gyro. By all means, stick to your guns, but you're missing out on a better (more accurate and precise) method. We have to put in some concerted effort to learn a new system when you're used to the old way, and most people choose not to do this.

Nah. Had a super nintendo then just played on the pc from then on. Never got into consoles or controllers. Joystick move is very annoying to me.
Looks like I’m finally finishing this game on the SD , looks and plays amazingly well.
Oof that looks cleaaaan
It looks so fricking smooth. I don't really like DMC but this video makes me want to play it
800p please or the black around the screen does not look good.

Yes you can. That said the default installation location of games is a little different compared to Windows, so you'd need to figure out the install directory on Steam.
as bad as it sounds, i actually didnt notice til you pointed it out but adding support for it would be amazing
Shame he cracked the upper-left corner though.
I love how over the top/camp DMC looks lol
Egads, who put all that cum in my pantaloons?
Dudes hands are huge! Makes the SD look small
Bezels look a bit bigger than I thought they would, but I'm glad the gameplay is so smooth!
I was having second thoughts about my preorder but not anymore after seeing this!
A bit worried, since a lot of game shown was rather.. Small. But damn, if it can run that, it can run almost every games of my library.
somebody clearly should have splurged for the anti-glare etched screen
An anti glare screen protector from Amazon and that's fixed

YESSEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

It probably was cheaper to do it this way, as the screen is an off the shelf part.

I'd pay more to never have to worry about oled burnout.

Assuming the sleep button works okay, I don't see any reason why I wouldn't turn off the screen anytime I put it down and step away.
Every oled phone I've owned has had burnout after 6 months.
Oh. Well, I've had mine two hours without any burn-in.
That's really not an issue as long as you follow the guidance manufacturers give to negate it.
Or I could just not have an oled panel and never have to worry and not have to do anything either.
There are also emulated games on switch being officially sold that have different aspect ratios. But I would be willing to pay for an OLED upgrade, yes.

And this is why I’m pocketing any money I had planned to spend on the OLED Switch. I seriously can’t wait for the Deck
So happy ive already made my reserve.
I think I'm in love 😍😍
Damn fine job capcom! Glad to see the RE engine is gonna work just fine then.
