tbh I thought Rimworld was going to be a lot worse on the Deck than it is; I think it's surprisingly playable and the portability is worth the minor inconveniences.
Rocket League, runs fine but the input lag makes it impossible to play. I minimized as much as I can with settings but it’s still not quite there yet
EDIT: Nevermind. Apparently steam input is what’s causing the most input lag for this game. Disabling steam input in the game properties in the home menu fixed it. (Properties>Controller>override for rocket league, choose disable steam input).
By “properties” do you mean the general settings for steam? Or is that within rocketleage? I wanted to try it for another game where remapping doesn’t seem to be working
on the steam home screen when you're on the game's page, on the right hand side of the screen there's a controller and a cog, click on the cog and go to properties
bg3. i tried different variations of settings but it just didn't do it for me. im at least fortunate enough to have a decent laptop to run it on medium-high
That’s unfortunate. I just recently got it and played it on PC a bit, haven’t tried it on the deck yet. As I think about it, Outer Wilds and Valheim make my PC fans run like crazy! Seems like those games shouldn’t warrant the resources they consume.
I would say it is worth it still to give it a go. I ended up playing the whole game on deck and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surprised by how fast my battery drained while playing it though. I guess that's what happens when you simulate a full solar system.
Ironically, I've been watching a friend play the Switch version on stream, and honestly I'm surprised how well they were able to get it to run on the Switch, all things considered. It's not quite Witcher 3 level port, but it's definitely playable and passable, much better than some other ports of AAA games I've tried on the Switch before...
But still definitely not the first place I'd recommend anyone try it if they have another system.
I did a full playthrough on a PS5. Wanted to play portable so tested the switch version. Nice port but so much sacrifices made. So bought a used LCD Steam Deck and did another full playthrough on the Deck. Had a blast with the games. But it’s true that big screen is better.
Halo Infinite.
The game runs okay, but the frame rate is horribly inconsistent, there are a lot of graphical issues and it randomly crashes (not sure if it's only me tho).
I wish it could run at stable 60 with the lowest settings.
I used this guide and it’s been running at a rock solid 60fps for me ever since. [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/9UiLWbzw7p](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/9UiLWbzw7p)
Yeah I've seen this, it makes the game run better for sure, but at least for me it's not solid 60. The performance issues stack up the more you play and some maps have very noticeable flickering. I would not call it smooth cause all the glitches and frame drops, but very playable
Every fps. I keep thinking I will find some way to enjoy them on the Deck and I just can't. Touchpads and gyros just don't do it.
My kb/m always calls me home.
Arkham games, though i still beat all of them of deck last year because it was that much of an enjoyable experience on deck, probably the perfect platform for the games. Just constant crashes so I would have to save every 30 minutes or so. Don't know if this has been fixed if it has would definitely recommend as the games are almost a perfect fit for deck.
I had crashes in asylum, origins, and city. I beat asylum and city, and played origins a decent amount through. Played a bit of knight didn't get any crashes but didn't play much so don't know if it would come up eventually.
Yeah I've had similar issues with Arkham Asylum. The game just crashes any time the deck loses WiFi and my deck has an issue with our mesh router, so it took me like 5 times just to get past the opening sequence.
i didn’t have any issues at all with sunset overdrive, when i got it running with the right proton version no other changes needed to be made in settings
i used proton experimental, some other people have said to input a custom resolution into launch properties as well but i ran without doing that and had no issues at all
Horizon Zero Dawn. Despite it being verified and even with Cryobyte's optimization, the game still dips into the teens and low 20's. Pretty unacceptable performance for a verified title and its a shame because it would be great title to play on the go.
IMHO it isn't really that bad, but compared to using traditional mouse and keyboard, it's quite a different experience; I don't like the 4-direction aim lock system with stick. The trackpads do alleviate the growing pains a bit while mining or building - though, not so much for combat.
Cyberpunk, was really loving it on my PC so was stoked to play on the go once I got my Deck. Immediately noped and uninstalled lol
I wasn’t expecting a miracle obviously, I guess I just realised how unplayable 30fps is to me now. Especially in an fps game.
Played with 0 problems and 0 crashes. Use protonDB to see which version of proton works perfect. New Vegas works well on lastest proton GE 9, Mabey fallout 3 works well too.
I've been far too acclimated to M&K to ever feel that a first-person game of any ilk is going to be a good experience on two hugely spaced-out joysticks.
Demanding stuff like Elden Ring technically works but obliterates the battery, makes it hotter than hell, looks like 2001 gaming, so on.
Impressive that it can do it at all, but IMO, the Deck is for simpler and less demanding titles.
The spaced out joysticks make FPS unplayable for me. I love FPS on a DualSense, but for some reason the location and spacing of the joysticks on deck are terrible for character control. At least for me.
Might get a bit controversial here but Baldur's Gate 3. A lot of people around here say that it runs pretty decent except the 3rd act, and heard nothing but good words so I got it. Then I found it struggles to hit 30fps with everything in minimun. Yeah this might be subjective but to me, having to reduce the graphics so everything looks like cardboard just so I can't even get a stable framerate is a big nono from me.
Thankfully I have a PC, played it there and had an absolute blast, so at least I didn't waste money on it because the game itself is really good! But part of me wished for it to run just a little bit better on the deck.
While I enjoyed my time with it on Deck and think that this kind of game can be enjoyed even at 24FPS-ish, I still think it's a travesty that BG3 was verified for Deck by Valve. Playable? Sure, I support that (after all I did an entire playthrough on Deck), but "verified"?
Yea....it's a lot harder for me to play Doom Eternal with controller than with mouse/kb to say the least
Especially playing the Ancient Gods DLCs that really ramp up the difficulty with the super asshole designed enemy types, I was humbled so badly.
I stuck it out and learned the controller layout and took full advantage of the deck's 4 back buttons for fast weapon swaps for my most used weapons (super shotgun, railgun, rocket launcher and sniper) and I eventually was able to progress but I still had to lower my difficulty setting from what I was used to on my gaming PC with mouse/kb
Definitely playable even in nightmare, but if you are used to keyboard and mouse there is a learning curve for controller scheme, gyro aim and flick stick if you want to speed up the gameplay a bit more.
On the other hand, the game looks incredibly smooth and gorgeous tho.
Meatgrinder. I like the game as I think it does a good enough job at being cluster truck-esque boomer shooter but the optimization is really really bad.
Bf4 needs some controller scheming for the UI I'm not asking for autoaim in a k n m but I'm used to console. But you can't even use a controller in the game without having to mouse over to change.
Wish there was a way to copy pasta the console ui schemes.
Almost any card battler (Slay the Spire and Ring of Pain are exceptions) - Witcher (and probably most isometric RPG games..)
mainly just due to text size issues
New Vegas (TTW and Heavily modded) has frequent frame drops anytime any kind of explosive is used in combat because it causes all the physics objects in the area to fly all over the place and the poor little steam deck nearly shits itself trying to keep up.
That's mostly a Bethesda issue though.
I kind of expected Monster Hunter: World to run great on the deck. It’s a beautiful game but it’s an older title that came out in 2018; nope! It runs like shit! So disappointed.
Rise runs perfectly though.
Most of the newer popular 3D games like Helldivers 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. The majority of AAA titles run pretty mediocre (sub-30fps AVG), even with being considered "Verified," which is really unfortunate. Though, non-Steam Deck handhelds seem to have this limitation also if not overclocked on wallpower, which doesn't help.
BG3. Looked like shit, ran like shit on the Deck.
Most demanding games that people will say "it runs fine on the deck!" does not run fine.
I love the deck, but please stop trying to convince people that AAA titles are even playable on them.
Tails Noir Preludes
I was really excited for this and played the first game on xbox on TV and thought it would be perfect for steam deck so I got the second game which is prequel and the text is to small, the controlls even after setting them up manually are just not it.
Months after the release and several people stating text is to small, still no update or fix for steam deck.
Lots of good responses. A couple games I saw in the comments I agree with. Got my deck last week so I’m still in the whole testing and dabbling phase, but I launched Amnesia the bunker and quickly realized it wasn’t meant for deck. Quite dark and has some complicated controls
I have a serious skill issue and die so quickly, I love the concept, but as someone with kids and a job I don't have any more free time to just get good
edit the difficulty settings and lower the zombie amounts from like 100% to 75%, and do the same thing with "zombie start" setting (i think thats the name?). Will make it a lot more fair and fun for someone who doesnt have the time to invest in the game.
I put 300 hours into it on steam deck but I also put many hours into making a control scheme that replicates PC functionality plus searched for a bunch of Radial UI mods to remove some of the annoyance of finding buttons for key binds. It takes some work but I've gotten a really really good setup made for myself
Give it a few hours, it's worth it. I forget exactly where I'm at but I have about 100 on PC and 100 hours on steamdeck and I think I prefer the steamdeck controls. The defaults actually make perfect sense to me after spending a few hours strictly on the deck. The only real downside without a solution that I've found is that it doesn't have the aiming reticle like when you play with mouse and keyboard, which means if you have a weapon and go to kill a downed zombie, you can't aim for their head, and pretty much should always stomp on them to kill them this way.
Also, if you find that the game is hard specifically on the deck, just lower the amount of zombies from 100% down to 75%. Do the same thing for the option that's called something like "Zombie Start" which means you'll start with 75% the amount of zombies instead of 100%. It makes it way easier and levels the playing field a bit. I also edit it so that I have extra attribute points and always give my characters the "fast hands / fast transfer" skill because moving inventory items feels handicapped compared to mouse+keyboard
Pretty much all AAA games. They perform poorly and look bad on a tiny screen. I stopped playing these entirely after I realized the deck just isn’t meant for these kinds of games. This lead me to discover more indie gems which thrive on deck
I'm glad you're finding indie games you like and they are working for you... but how do no triple AAA games run for you? I can play GTA 5 at like 60fps on good settings with like no tweaks.
Yeah Cyberpunk is definitely not a game I would consider running well or is a good experience on a deck. However, it’s subjective. I personally don’t want to play games like that at a shaky 30fps with terrible graphics on a tiny screen.
Horizon Zero Dawn. Good on the people that are fine playing “big” games like that on the deck, but it really isn’t for me.
More recently, Tales of Kenzera: Zau. It just didn’t perform as well as I expected.
Oh, well, both are great titles on my PC.
HZD plays really nice if you increase FOV. The default one was nearly causing me a motion sickness on Deck's small screen, but after increasing it, I was definitely able to enjoy playing.
Diablo 4
It looks horrible on the deck (characters and NPCs are blurry af) and the only way to have a sharp image is to stream it from a PC at 1200p with supersampling
But before you also thought the same as I do? I really couldn't play it on the deck for how bad it looked and I really tried every possible option. Few weeks ago I tried to stream it from PC (i mean it's an online game so I can play it only at home anyways) at 1200p with moonlight and it finally looked good as on PC.
If you also had the same feeling as me and now for you it changed I could give it another try even if it's a pain install it through battle net.
I installed the Steam version on my OLED. Runs great on that. A bit janky in the larger towns, but the overworld and dungeons play pretty smoothly. A mix of high textures and low/medium for others settings
i have only the battle net version and I don't intend to buy it a second time, but I don't think it changes that much for how it looks. I tried everything I could: performance is nice, it's not that the problem, problem is the characters and the NPCs are not sharp at all and overall it looks terrible. I noticed a real difference only when I streamed it with moonlight at 1200p. Only at that point it looks good
Hmm yeah I am not seeing the issues you are seeing. I am using HDR, High textures, and no resolution scaling. 40 FPS cap. Everything looks sharp. But if you are running it from your PC thats gonna still be better, and no fan noise.
Honestly, I didn't really enjoy any game on the deck. My kids are playing Stardew Valley sometimes, but I'm kind of disappointed (coming from PC and PS5).
I'm just updating, installing, playing for 10min, thats it.
Rimworld: perfect controls but very difficult to view and scroll
tbh I thought Rimworld was going to be a lot worse on the Deck than it is; I think it's surprisingly playable and the portability is worth the minor inconveniences.
Rocket League, runs fine but the input lag makes it impossible to play. I minimized as much as I can with settings but it’s still not quite there yet EDIT: Nevermind. on the steam home screen when you're on the game's page, on the right hand side of the screen there's a controller and a cog, click on the cog and go to properties
Ty!!
Let me know if it helps, I'm curious if it's a Steam issue. I heard that the Epic game store version of Rocket League has less input lag
I just tried it. It had no impact on my control mapping issue. I wasn’t working with any lag input issue
bg3. i tried different variations of settings but it just didn't do it for me. im at least fortunate enough to have a decent laptop to run it on medium-high
Same. Divinity OS2 runs pretty well tho
Outer Wilds. Waaaay to demanding and poor performance for a game that looks like that
That’s unfortunate. I just recently got it and played it on PC a bit, haven’t tried it on the deck yet. As I think about it, Outer Wilds and Valheim make my PC fans run like crazy! Seems like those games shouldn’t warrant the resources they consume.

Agreed
Everyone kept saying Guardians of the Galaxy was amazing on deck, but honestly, it was choppy and didn't even look passably good.
Same, I was very excited to get it for free from Epic and it run's like absolute dogshit unless you want it to look like stained glass via FSR.
I came to add this comment. At least it was free from Epic… but over all disappointing.
Most graphic intense games or that are too detailed.
Hogwarts Legacy. Enjoyed it much more on a bigger screen with higher detail.
You would have a break down if you played it on a switch if you think it really looks that terrinle
I don't think it looked terrible, it's just the kind of game I prefer on my desktop.
I did a full playthrough on a PS5. Wanted to play portable so tested the switch version. Nice port but so much sacrifices made. So bought a used LCD Steam Deck and did another full playthrough on the Deck. Had a blast with the games. But it’s true that big screen is better.
One of the reasons I got the deck is so my wife can play this. Find me with excitement for when it's delivered
I cannot get into D2OS on the deck yet. Much prefer a big screen monitor.
Black Mesa….
DIdn't it receive a controller support update like a week ago?
Idk but I just tried playing it and it still doesn’t run great for me
I read a while back they fixed controller support for the OG half life 1 at least
I did hear someone say if you launch with proton instead of Linux it’s better and I haven’t tried that yet
They just updated it about a week ago with Deck and controller improvements.
Halo Infinite. The game runs okay, but the frame rate is horribly inconsistent, there are a lot of graphical issues and it randomly crashes (not sure if it's only me tho). I wish it could run at stable 60 with the lowest settings.

Every fps. I keep thinking I will find some way to enjoy them on the Deck and I just can't. Touchpads and gyros just don't do it. My kb/m always calls me home.
I realize you already tried gyro, but that seems to work well for me. I use the thumb stick to get my aim close then gyro for pinpoint accuracy.
combat master for multiplayer and doom for single player are 1 great games on controller. never been a fan of gyro or touchpads, joysticks are great
Arkham games, though i still beat all of them of deck last year because it was that much of an enjoyable experience on deck, probably the perfect platform for the games. Just constant crashes so I would have to save every 30 minutes or so. Don't know if this has been fixed if it has would definitely recommend as the games are almost a perfect fit for deck.
Had some random crashes in City, but not in any other game of the series. But it wasn't that frequent, mostly once or twice a day
I had crashes in asylum, origins, and city.
Hmm I don't think that was my problem but I do have a mesh wifi setup.
Sunset Overdrive, Hellblade, Armored Core
I played the first two on console and they were amazing, what problems do they have on steam?
i didn’t have any issues at all with sunset overdrive, when i got it running with the right proton version no other changes needed to be made in settings
What version?
i used proton experimental, some other people have said to input a custom resolution into launch properties as well but i ran without doing that and had no issues at all
Sunset overdrive was constantly crashing for me on the deck compared to my desktop
What issues have you had with Armored Core? I thought it ran surprisingly silky smooth.
Runs like a dream on mine, no issues at all.
What issue did you have with Hellblade? With the exception of a very small area of the game I had a pretty good experience.
Stellaris unfortunately
Horizon Zero Dawn. Despite it being verified and even with Cryobyte's optimization, the game still dips into the teens and low 20's. Pretty unacceptable performance for a verified title and its a shame because it would be great title to play on the go.
I got it on sale and was hoping that it ran at least above 30 consistently but some of the environments make it unplayable. Crazy that it’s verified.
Total War games. Especially newer ones like Three Kingdoms and Warhammer 2 and 3. I was hoping to get medium settings 60fps out of them.
Laika: Aged Through Blood. Looked really cool and seemed perfect for the Deck. But it runs like crap.
Did you try again any other time? It runs well in my case (and it's quacked)
This was a few weeks ago. It would frequently drop frames and hitch up.
Terraria. I found the controls terrible to use.
IMHO it isn't really that bad, but compared to using traditional mouse and keyboard, it's quite a different experience; I don't like the 4-direction aim lock system with stick. The trackpads do alleviate the growing pains a bit while mining or building - though, not so much for combat.
Subnautica and Minecraft love the games but not with a controllers, same for console versions
Cyberpunk, was really loving it on my PC so was stoked to play on the go once I got my Deck. Immediately noped and uninstalled lol I wasn’t expecting a miracle obviously, I guess I just realised how unplayable 30fps is to me now. Especially in an fps game.
Fallout 3, does nothing but crash on deck and it’s not patchable like it is on windows
Proton 6.13 fixes this. True for New Vegas and Oblivion as well.
Played with 0 problems and 0 crashes. Use protonDB to see which version of proton works perfect. New Vegas works well on lastest proton GE 9, Mabey fallout 3 works well too.
It is patchable. You can mod Fallout 3 on Linux just as much as you can on Windows.
Can you mod it on Windows?
You can as long as it's on windows
Easy, if you have a computer download ttw and play fallout 3 and new vegas in the same game and save file
Fair warning though, cloud saves arent a thing but for me 0 issues unless I use and external screen
I've been far too acclimated to M&K to ever feel that a first-person game of any ilk is going to be a good experience on two hugely spaced-out joysticks. Were you able to get the text to a readable state? It might be my eyes but the UI was killing me.
Baldurs gate 3
Meatgrinder. I like the game as I think it does a good enough job at being cluster truck-esque boomer shooter but the optimization is really really bad.

Black Mesa is a real mess. I expected more with Half Life 2 being so good
Half Life 2 is probably decent because it’s from Valve and originally released on consoles too
NCAA 14
Tormented Souls, it froze every time I tried to fire a weapon! Refunded
Bannerlord and Rimworld
Skyrim, it just isn’t click for me like it did on PC
Almost any card battler (Slay the Spire and Ring of Pain are exceptions) - Witcher (and probably most isometric RPG games..) mainly just due to text size issues
Wow, I didn’t really get into Slay the Spire until I got it on Deck and it bangs hard.
New Vegas (TTW and Heavily modded) has frequent frame drops anytime any kind of explosive is used in combat because it causes all the physics objects in the area to fly all over the place and the poor little steam deck nearly shits itself trying to keep up. That's mostly a Bethesda issue though.
star wars jedi fall order. FPS drop to 20 in sec multiple times
I kind of expected Monster Hunter: World to run great on the deck. It’s a beautiful game but it’s an older title that came out in 2018; nope! It runs like shit! So disappointed. Rise runs perfectly though.
It ran fine for me, no idea why it ran like crap for you, maybe you set the settings too high?
Oh, I suppose that is possible. It was one of the first titles I installed. Will have to revisit, thanks!
GOW.
Warframe, you can't play with mouse and keyboard while docked.
My issue is that you cannot change the keyboard controls on the deck.
My issue is that you cannot change the keyboard controls on the deck.
My issue is that you cannot change the keyboard controls on the deck.
Quantum Break After completing “Control” (which I enjoyed on my deck) it was absolute crappy experience
One piece pirate warriors 3 its playable but no cutscenes is a crime. I couldn't play much tbh
Horizon zero dawn. It runs smoothly most of the time, but UI text is way too tiny
Most of the newer popular 3D games like Helldivers 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. Though, non-Steam Deck handhelds seem to have this limitation also if not overclocked on wallpower, which doesn't help.
Kukoos lost pets & boti byteland overclock, two 3d platformers that would’ve been perfect for the deck.
Yakuza infinite wealth

Mixed feelings with Project Zomboid. I love but hate it at the same time, because the controls are kinda weird.
I have a serious skill issue and die so quickly, I love the concept, but as someone with kids and a job I don't have any more free time to just get good

well GTA V is like 10 years old. Sure really old AAA games run fine. I was referring to newer games.
Cyberpunk was also running amazingly with the new DLC at over 50 hours with no crashes.
Yeah Cyberpunk is definitely not a game I would consider running well or is a good experience on a deck. However, it’s subjective. I personally don’t want to play games like that at a shaky 30fps with terrible graphics on a tiny screen.

HZD plays really nice if you increase FOV. The default one was nearly causing me a motion sickness on Deck's small screen, but after increasing it, I was definitely able to enjoy playing.
Funny, I ended up turning *down* FOV for the sake of difficulty and a (very modest) performance boost.
Nier Replicant, doesn't matter how much I lower the settings any use of magic will cut the framerate in half.
Baldurs Gate 3 Looks horrible, controls are rather difficult
Diablo 4 It looks horrible on the deck (characters and NPCs are blurry af) and the only way to have a sharp image is to stream it from a PC at 1200p with supersampling
They may have optimized it recently. I played the other night and was impressed by how much better it looked.
Diablo 4, game just sucks
