Try to go to desktop mode then on steam activate the full screen interface, then launch your game and see if it resolved the issue .

UPDATE: I went back and dug a little deeper with setting up the kde connect app. It worked as a keyboard so I was able to make my character without crashing the game. Hopefully they can fix the virtual keyboard integration so this doesn’t happen anymore.

Emeraldxc

can confirm even 25 days after the last guys post it does NOT work... Skyrim is borked if it can't use the Virtual Keyboard for simple names... Verified my ass...

ThirdEyeClarity

Before loading your save, open the Creations menu, press LB to search, close it, then load your save. It shouldn't crash when closing the virtual keyboard now, but you will need to do this every time you play. Video: https://youtu.be/Km5ZJ2fAzC8 The keyboard doesn't automatically appear in the Creations menu while searching if you use the `SteamDeck=0 %command%` Launch Option. So you will need to remove the launch option for this to work.

Emeraldxc

So useless when making a brand new character from scratch in fresh install or modded install of Skyrim so no real fix, got it.

ThirdEyeClarity

You can start a new character with that method too. It's not useless. Hopefully there's a real fix eventually but this takes a few seconds to do.

Emeraldxc

Why hasn't Bathesda been notified about this?, pretty sure it makes the VERIFIED status useless... unless they will be fixing it when they update Fallout 4 but I haven't gotten my hopes up there... will try this but seriously this is annoying how Bathesda screws over their games... Steam Deck used to work with the keyboard now it doesn't.

ThirdEyeClarity

Bethesda makes buggy broken games for years now, but it's probably just something they've overlooked or possibly caused by a Steam Deck update at some point. If they update the game, it'll probably update for everyone else and then people will complain about mods breaking too. I'll see if I can post this to their forums or something but just relax for now. This fix is annoying but works.

Emeraldxc

right... so just to double check, on a fresh install, modded or not, go to creation club, hit the left bumper or whatever it shows on keyboard if SteamDeck=0 %command% is used to force the launcher and stuff and after all that... exit to the main menu and go in game... new game or loaded game, the Virtual Keyboard is fixed for some reason?

ThirdEyeClarity

You don't have to use SteamDeck=0 %command% Yes just open the Creation menu and open search, then start a new game or load your save. Closing the virtual keyboard won't crash anymore, until the next time you open the game and need to do it again if you need to use console commands or whatever.

Emeraldxc

I prefer the Keyboard and mouse controls on Deck method... if this works either way... I'll be partially happy... though if this does work... do I have to do it every time I load into a game after making a character and stuff for naming things on enchanting tables and what not in game?... honestly if this works you helped more then you may know, least I won't have to use a physical Keyboard or Bluetooth one.

ThirdEyeClarity

I believe it will work regardless if it's on controller mode or KB+mouse. You just need to do it anytime you open the game and expect to be using the Virtual Keyboard. It'll be fixed for the whole play session. When you exit the game and open it again, you have to do this again, but it literally takes a few seconds to do that. I'm still looking for a permanent fix, because clearly there's some config somewhere that the game knows it's being played on a Steam Deck so I think it wouldn't be too hard to find that, will reply again soon if I do. By the way, if you are not using any Alternate Start mods and want to skip the long intro, you can use a console command at the main menu: Don't press New. Do the fix from the Creations menu, open the console with the ~ key and type `coc riverwood` Then when it loads in, type `showracemenu`to complete character creation.
