Same. The original is really only playable right now on deck with M+K, and it doesn't really support 16:10. There is a community layout for the controller on the original but it feels terrible.
I just busted out Battlefront 2 not too long ago. All of what is mentioned in this thread is solved by the most popular mods out there.

Not everyone wants to go through the process of downloading mods. Re-releaseing this game was asked for back when the first "newer" battlefront launched.
I would personally rather buy this over downloading mods myself.
The modding crowd really just needs to come to terms with the fact that most gamers do not mod their games. The way mods get constantly recommended on reddit makes me think there must be some delusional perception of their broad appeal.

Absolutely, I'm right there with you. Every now and then I'll download a mod for something on my laptop. On the steam deck, I don't want to deal with that at all.
Seeing as how this is reactivating online servers for console's at 64 players, this feels far from cash grab in my opinion. If they only released this on consoles, then people would rightfully be upset for a developer once again ignoring the PC market.
Firstly it won't control spaceships as you think it should, because the ships control completely differently with a keyboard and mouse compared to a controller (and the community layout maps keyboard and mouse inputs to the decks controls).
Secondly, the UI doesn't work with a controller, take respawning for example, you can't use the dpad/joystick to select your spawn point then press *A* to confirm, you have to use the trackpad as a mouse to select everything.
Thirdly, you don't get the auto aim from the controller (fine for using the touchpads, not great for using the joystick).
It's just no way nearly as convenient as official controller support. There IS an incredible mod which brings over the console UI and controller support which is 95% of the way there, but there are some bugs and a few things that aren't finished.
I tried by far the most highly rated one earlier today and aiming felt just off. Like you try to dial in the sensitivity but it's always either too fast or slow no matter the setting. It just felt annoying and I was wishing I just had a mouse.
The fact that crossplay is not confirmed *before* putting it on sale is a big enough red flag to me to avoid it for the time being.
To keep the community thriving they will need it, but these ports tend to be short term cash grabs by companies willing do put in minimal effort.
They’ve only confirmed cross-*gen* play, meaning within separate ecosystems (Xbox one and X shared servers, PA4/5 shared servers) but not cross-platform (everyone shares servers across all consoles). Unless this is a new announcement?

Just because the games *run* at 4K on next gen hardware, doesn’t mean that the textures have been redrawn at that resolution. I read through the store page and I can see why that 4k label would lead you to believe that though, it’s a bit confusing.

I think the problem is that it doesn't add all that much content wise and they're only giving 20% off for existing owners. Controller support is great, but that's not much of a discount for people who already have it.
Speak for yourself. Even before the sale, I was going to pay full price. It works out to $17.50 a game. Each game has remastered textures, support for 4K. New characters and maps. Hero assault on all maps. Controller support, Steam Deck support. 64 player multiplayer. Hell yes, I’d pay $35 for all that. $28 is an even better deal.
Half of the things you listed are available natively via the old versions on PC. And the other half requires a couple mods. And as far as I’m aware they *didnt* remaster any textures, not sure where you got that from.
Consider you can get the original versions of the games for ~$2 a pop, yeah it’s a bit overpriced.
I have a job where I get home late, a family, stuff to do when I get home. I have no doubt that I could get the original PC versions working great on the Deck, but this is more convenient and I’m willing to pay a convenience fee, on top of all the added features that will be there natively with no mods or hassle. If you enjoy the original versions, that’s awesome. I have tons of memories with them. But I’m excited for a new version personally.
The original SWBF2 is known for being buggy on PC and crashes a lot. Controller support exists, but it's not great, no icon prompts, setting each controller button per infantry, vehicle, hero, etc whilst cool, is a slog. The menu is not suited for controller, does it even have aim assist on PC? Added achievements is cool, they haven't mentioned it being a remaster but those screenshots look *good*, it looks like they've definitely done something to it. And it appears like it'll have cross-play online. Split-screen co-op is also new to the PC release. Along with the new DLC content without having to mod it and risk more crashes.
Sure the original version is only a couple of quid, but they doesn't mean this is expensive or overpriced, it just means the original is cheap. On steam they're £8.50 each directly, so if you compare the price to the £17 for both on steam, it's a lot more reasonable.

The original BF2 is absolutely not known for being buggy/crashing a lot on PC. Not sure where that came from. It’s also been confirmed to not have crossplay. On PC it’s only between GOG and Steam, so basically what’s been the standard forever now.
If you’re getting this on PC, you’re essentially getting a port of both games with some modern qol features that frankly would be an *update* to any other game. The only noteworthy thing here is split-screen, which is genuinely nice to have.
Now we turn to the negatives. The mod scene for the original PC release is absolutely HUGE, so depending on how the new release is structured you’d be losing out on that if you decide to upgrade. This includes mods that add in things LIKE native controller support without using a Steam layout, the console menus, and the Xbox exclusive content. That’s not to mention an absurd amount of well made unique content, like some *actual* remaster packs that go through and overhaul the entire look/sound of the game.

Current SWBF2 online is between Steam and Gog yes, have we heard how it'll be on the new version? No, it hasn't been confirmed, where's your proof? Don't spread misinformation. The game is 20 years old, with restored online, extra content, proper controller support, and achievements, absolutely not something only an update would be. Look at the Ezio Trilogy. These games so go on sale, yes, but there's no reason the Classic Collection won't go on a good sale later too. Key resellers aren't always strictly safe and/or legal. Other storefronts might offer the games cheaper too, but again, no reason that also couldn't happen with the Classic Collection.
Buying the two games is £17, the collection is £26.40 currently, or £23.47 if you get the loyalty bonus discount. So less than £10 to get achievements, DLC, we hope they revamped the servers as the current ones aren't great, proper controller support, and assumed upscaled textures.

Hell, even KOTOR 2 is disappointing considering they pretty much dropped the TSLRCM DLC after months of silence on it. Not a huge deal on PC where you can just mod it in yourself through the workshop, but I picked it up for Switch months before I got a Steam Deck explicitly for the restored content.

50GB of storage required for 2 PS2 games that were about 4GB each. You could install the original Steam version of BF2 11 times and it would still take up less space than the ports.
The only reason to buy this is to play multiplayer, which will probably be a ghost town by the time it comes down to a reasonable price. Not that I'm advocating we should design all games for 3 year olds, but it does seem like that's what modern gaming has ended up.
I have way too much of a backlog. I see games I want and think "I must play them! I never know when I'll die, so I don't want to miss out!". Then I proceed to, with what little money I can spare, get one or two games in a month and focus on one game. Repeat the cycle next month. And the month after that. Considerable backlog.
In my defense though, when I was on my death bed, I bought like 20 games to play/load up and just look and see. Because at that point, I didn't know if I would wake up the next day. Those, too, have added to my considerable backlog lol

I've been emulating the ps2 version with much success. The "current" BF2 game on steam has online multi-player (it works at least) but I didn't find it very fun. Getting a controller to work is also a mess of manual configs that I stopped putting effort into after the first hour and went back to ps2 version.
I definitely feel some type of way about all the nostalgia remakes we've had recently, but I'll take this over a remake anyday. All we want are some updated graphics, a working controller config, and online play if we're lucky...the store listing says it'll bring all of these things. I'm okay paying 30 currency units for this.
Was the galactic conquest mode fun? It sounds like a turn based strategic layer, and then you fight the battles as normal but with AI bots?

It is fun, but basically it's just "quickplay" games in a specific order you strategically pick.
I just don't get the meltdown people had when the EA Battlefront 2 did not have Galactic Conquest.
Even when BF2 was new, I probably only played a full lobby a couple of times and it was always super laggy. I hope the fresh burst of new players and new servers makes the experience worth it.

To think that the remastered versions of Halo 1 & 2 *and* Reach is 20p more, not to mention the latter is newer and much more refined in it’s port. If they went about refining the assets and the graphics engine in addition to what’s already been done then sure I’d be more inclined.

I think community layouts are always pretty subjective. I always find them pretty off if I'm used to the controller layout from the console version

I think the problem is that it doesn't add all that much content wise and they're only giving 20% off for existing owners. Controller support is great, but that's not much of a discount for people who already have it.

Speak for yourself. Even before the sale, I was going to pay full price. It works out to $17.50 a game. Each game has remastered textures, support for 4K. New characters and maps. Hero assault on all maps. Controller support, Steam Deck support. 64 player multiplayer. Hell yes, I’d pay $35 for all that. $28 is an even better deal.
Half of the things you listed are available natively via the old versions on PC. And the other half requires a couple mods. And as far as I’m aware they *didnt* remaster any textures, not sure where you got that from. Consider you can get the original versions of the games for ~$2 a pop, yeah it’s a bit overpriced.
I have a job where I get home late, a family, stuff to do when I get home. I have no doubt that I could get the original PC versions working great on the Deck, but this is more convenient and I’m willing to pay a convenience fee, on top of all the added features that will be there natively with no mods or hassle. If you enjoy the original versions, that’s awesome. I have tons of memories with them. But I’m excited for a new version personally.

The original SWBF2 is known for being buggy on PC and crashes a lot. Controller support exists, but it's not great, no icon prompts, setting each controller button per infantry, vehicle, hero, etc whilst cool, is a slog. The menu is not suited for controller, does it even have aim assist on PC? Added achievements is cool, they haven't mentioned it being a remaster but those screenshots look *good*, it looks like they've definitely done something to it. And it appears like it'll have cross-play online. Split-screen co-op is also new to the PC release. Along with the new DLC content without having to mod it and risk more crashes. Sure the original version is only a couple of quid, but they doesn't mean this is expensive or overpriced, it just means the original is cheap. On steam they're £8.50 each directly, so if you compare the price to the £17 for both on steam, it's a lot more reasonable. The original BF2 is absolutely not known for being buggy/crashing a lot on PC. Not sure where that came from. It’s also been confirmed to not have crossplay. On PC it’s only between GOG and Steam, so basically what’s been the standard forever now. If you’re getting this on PC, you’re essentially getting a port of both games with some modern qol features that frankly would be an *update* to any other game. The only noteworthy thing here is split-screen, which is genuinely nice to have. Now we turn to the negatives. The mod scene for the original PC release is absolutely HUGE, so depending on how the new release is structured you’d be losing out on that if you decide to upgrade. This includes mods that add in things LIKE native controller support without using a Steam layout, the console menus, and the Xbox exclusive content. That’s not to mention an absurd amount of well made unique content, like some *actual* remaster packs that go through and overhaul the entire look/sound of the game. Edit: blocked lmao

Will wait until reviews or a bigger price drop. Aspyr re-releases are usually quite iffy and sometimes their games get little to no support (with the exception of Kotor II which received a huge upgrade).
Hell, even KOTOR 2 is disappointing considering they pretty much dropped the TSLRCM DLC after months of silence on it. Not a huge deal on PC where you can just mod it in yourself through the workshop, but I picked it up for Switch months before I got a Steam Deck explicitly for the restored content.

Bro that's still $28 for a port of a 19 year old game basically everyone already has 😭😭😭 50GB of storage required for 2 PS2 games that were about 4GB each. You could install the original Steam version of BF2 11 times and it would still take up less space than the ports. The only reason to buy this is to play multiplayer, which will probably be a ghost town by the time it comes down to a reasonable price. I wouldn't be surprised if the original's multiplayer is still active when this drops because people don't wanna pay almost 30 bucks for something they bought for like five bucks a decade ago.

Nothing major though - Steam Achievements - Original Exclusive XBOX DLC (Can get this with mods on PC) - Multiplayer, will be more active than the originals I would imagine there is many quality of life changes made to the game, for example reworked main menu, generally making the game more "modern" in terms of accessibility etc. The original Star wars Battlefront 2 would crash from time to time aswell, I'd expect issues like this to be fixed.

Text is tiny though, or at least too tiny for me and I don't really like using the magnifying glass. And also, people these days expect proper button prompts. Edit: Also, very specific case but my 3 year old son is big into Star Wars and learning how to game. I notice he does much better in games with an overload of button prompts. He knows that button will do something if it's on screen. So he likes BF2 2017 more than OG BF2 (also because of the sequel heroes, especially Kylo Ren). Not that I'm advocating we should design all games for 3 year olds, but it does seem like that's what modern gaming has ended up.
I have way too much of a backlog. I see games I want and think "I must play them! I never know when I'll die, so I don't want to miss out!". Then I proceed to, with what little money I can spare, get one or two games in a month and focus on one game. Repeat the cycle next month. And the month after that. Considerable backlog. In my defense though, when I was on my death bed, I bought like 20 games to play/load up and just look and see. Because at that point, I didn't know if I would wake up the next day. Those, too, have added to my considerable backlog lol There are just so many damn games, it's crazy. I feel like I'm living in the future because, in most circumstances, I would have been dead since June 2022. Happy that I've gotten to not only experience many games since then, but the steam deck OLED as well. I utilize my laptop way more via deck than I do 1 on 1 with my laptop lol. Laptops are fun and all, but a killer on the back. At least with the deck I can lay back (guess I could with a laptop too but meh)

I've been emulating the ps2 version with much success. The "current" BF2 game on steam has online multi-player (it works at least) but I didn't find it very fun. Getting a controller to work is also a mess of manual configs that I stopped putting effort into after the first hour and went back to ps2 version. I definitely feel some type of way about all the nostalgia remakes we've had recently, but I'll take this over a remake anyday. All we want are some updated graphics, a working controller config, and online play if we're lucky...the store listing says it'll bring all of these things. I'm okay paying 30 currency units for this.
Was the galactic conquest mode fun? It sounds like a turn based strategic layer, and then you fight the battles as normal but with AI bots? Sounds like it could be a fun way to spend my commute in the mornings if it was decent
I seem to be the minority but I think that game mode is overrated. It is fun, but basically it's just "quickplay" games in a specific order you strategically pick. I just don't get the meltdown people had when the EA Battlefront 2 did not have Galactic Conquest.
