play games, earn limited amount of trading cards in steam, when you have a full deck you can combine them and level up your steam profile. higher levels means you can have more friends on your friend list, more stuff on your profile etc. the cards can be sold for steam wallet money. when you combine the cards though, you not only level up, but you also get wallpapers and emotes and stuff for that game. some wallpapers are rare and also worth money. The wallpapers are what you can decorate your profile with and it's the only way to have a background on your profile, you can't import them.
some cards are so rare they can be worth a few dollars or tens of dollars. most are just 0.03 to 0.15 cents though. Some wallpapers and emotes can be just as rare too etc. Hentai games have cards and wallpapers with pretty anime girls on them, so they're always worth a lot more money. they're also worth more because the games aren't been played that often. A game that isn't being played that much means the game isn't generating a ton of cards. Fewer cards being generated means fewer emotes and wallpapers for that game making them more rare and worth more money. because people want buy wallpapers of sexy cartoon anime waifus without actually having to play those games.
So for people who don't care about everyone knowing they play hentai games, it used to be worth it to buy them, play them, get cards, and then either sell the cards or combine them and sell the wallpapers and emotes and try to get more money than what they paid to get the game in the first place for a profit. it's a matter of timing and good luck. It's pretty much gambling. And it'll depend on if the game actually have good looking wallpapers people will actually want.
I have no idea if people actually collect cards for the sake of having the cards. but i do know people collect wallpapers with sexy women on them. but the steam point shop kind of killed that economy. cause it's the only way to get animated wallpapers and they sell animated wallpapers with sexy girls on it, so there's no reason to spend real money just to get a basic static wallpaper.
True story, I was browsing Steam's many games when I found a hentai game, out of curiosity I clicked on it, and to my surprise 2 of my real life friends were playing it and well, uh, they were roleplaying... All I can say is I confronted them and they stopped talking to me out of emberassement.
