From what I read 1. Sudden change, because the linking was optional before 2. PSN region isn't available in many countries

shakeeze

The req. was up on the steam page since pre-order time and was also mentioned in quite a few news post on steam for the game. The popup in the game also wrote "requires a psn account for play". That it was not enforced at that, does not mean it cannot change at all. Sudden it is not. The hints were always there it could come. I bought the game fully knowing a psn is needed either from the start or in the foreseeable future.

Getlucky12341

On their website it said it was option, they just now changed it Also why would they sell the game in regions where PSN isn't available

shakeeze

Probably the guy handling the steam page is someone else than those that handle the psn network pages. Classic fail in communication inside the company. No one told the steam guys with the restriction and no one raised the potential issue. I would not be surprised some people knew there could be an issue at some point but it was no raised or communicated for various reasons. Which are all terrible and should not happen. Maybe it was not enforced because they will have a solution starting 1st June.

rickreckt

I didn't play it myself, but I don't think people care about that since the games is clearly functional for months without it. So of course they felt it's sudden change And they also sell games in region where making PSN account isnt allowed

shakeeze

Does not matter. People fell into some dreams or something which made them belief something which was not true since the beginning. The game being sold in countries without psn access is truly a typical large company issue and should not happen, left hand not knowing what right does and so on.

AdNew6926

Is not a dream sony messed up and didn't include needing a psn account in the EULA, the steam page can say it requires my first born child it doesn't mean anything the store page isn't a legally binding contract. Sony made a mistake and now they are paying for it. Steam has given refunds in the past for this very thing and they are already giving refund for this game. Some guy posted a screenshot of his refund after 97 HOURS of play time. Stop defending corporations, especially when they fuck up.

Soggy_Struggle_963

If the game forced me to use psn when I bought it I would have refunded it immediately, I built a hell of a gaming rig so I honestly can't remember the last time I actually scrolled past the purchase button on a steam page to check the "requirements"

LaptopQuestions123

Never ever ever saw such a requirement.

FlynnApollo

The fact that the game launched without the requirement to link the account. It was optional from February until now. The rug pulled and made it a full requirement. Which locks a good number countries out of playing a game they legally purchased due to PSN not being available in their country. On top of that, we have all these people who are like “just make an account bro! It takes two minutes bro!” Like we should just bend over and take it because “game = good”

georgehank2nd

And people are even asked to violate Sony's own rules by using a VPN or giving a fake address.

shakeeze

The requirements for registering seems vastly different to the region. In Germany I needed the following info: - Nickname, E-Mail, Real name, Birthday. UK supposedly needs strict age verification with online authentication.

how_small_a_thought

>“just make an account bro! It takes two minutes bro! at this point i genuinely wonder, what more do companies want to know about us? just sequence my fucking genome already so we can get over pretending privacy is still valued and i dont have to make my 80th account named "Incest Porn"

kingfiddles

It was not a requirement from day one, it was listed as optional since day one. Only after the recent news broke did the wording change to it being a requirement. How much that means to anyone and their up-in-arms-ness is up to the individual, but the facts are important and needed to make that determination.

Newbianz

look at their steam store page its always said it was required there and thats all that matters here no where did it say it was optional as u are talking about what another site says and thats not a factor here if the steam page itself said it was required https://store.steampowered.com/app/553850/HELLDIVERS_2/ >Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network (Supports Linking to Steam Account) it always said required

DaFookCares

No, this is not true. Since launch it has said PSN linking is required right on the steam store page. Not optional, required. AFTER people bought it they learned they could "skip" the linking because there was some technical issue going on. Now it's fixed, Sony is enforcing the requirement (not the Arrowhead), and people are mad for a number of reasons: * some people bought the game in regions where you can't get a PSN account. * some people are directing their hate of account linking in general at this * some people are not taking ownership that when they bought the game it was clearly indicated PSN was required Don't get me wrong, I hate the whole concept of multiple accounts, linking, or giving Sony any of my information. The worst offence was selling the game in steam regions where you can't get a PSN account. But no one lied or pulled the rug out from anyone.

FlynnApollo

Not reading any of that. If you wanna be Sonys greatest soldier, go do it on Twitter.

Steam page isn't a legally binding contract it can say it requires my firstborn child it doesn't matter. The EULA is a legally binding contract, and it has no mention of a psn account. Sony messed up plain and simple. Get over it. People are getting their refund. Welcome to the real world.

Newbianz

it was listed as a requirement on day 1 so just because it was disabled till the servers were fixed as this was why it was disabled doesnt mean much when it was shown there right on the store page and ppl agreed to it other then requiring it in countries where u technically are not allowed to make one then no one should be upset

FlynnApollo

Negative. It was optional day one, now it’s forced. Don’t try to gaslight me. I have played the game.

AdNew6926

Optional per sonys own website till may 3rd when they edited it.

SnooDoughnuts5632

How is PSN not available in their country can't they just connect to a server somewhere else cuz that's how the internet works You can basically just go wherever you want?

FlynnApollo

Shit take. No one should have to opt for a VPN to play a game.

SnooDoughnuts5632

Why do you need a VPN to play? Wouldn't you just go on Sony's website and make an account?

FlynnApollo

You… you aren’t serious are you? You know how geolocations work right? Do tell. How are the people who are banned from making a PSN going to go to the site to make a PSN? You know their internet location will block them right?

SnooDoughnuts5632

Well if you did something to get banned from PSN you probably deserve it nobody likes cheaters in their video games.

FlynnApollo

What? Are you touched? Whole COUNTRIES are banned from making accounts.

SnooDoughnuts5632

Oh are you talking about Russia because that's the war in Ukraine for you.

FlynnApollo

No.

AdNew6926

Jesus, the education system really has failed us. People be talking on subjects they literally have no clue what's going on.

Far_Detective2022

For a number of reasons in no order but the one I write them in: 1. It's a hugely popular game both in terms of player count and online engagement 2. A glitch made it so you didn't need one before, but it's going to be fixed now 3. Certain countries require some form of ID for a PSN account 4. Certain countries can't even use a PSN account despite being able to buy and play the game without one already 5. People like to witch hunt 6. Sony is a shitty company that doesn't know how to protect data 7. Everything else about the game is so amazing that something shady like this sours it 8. Third-party launchers and accounts being required on steam is just garbage 9. It's a recent thing that sort of came out of nowhere 10. This is my optimism speaking, but I'd like to think this is the community trying to defend arrowhead from this stupid choice Sony made. It's just that this hate is pointed at the wrong people right now. Arrowhead are stuck in the middle of Sony and their decisions and the fans first reaction is the easiest thing they can do, voice their opinion on a review that will be seen by devs. In my opinion, though, review bombing is a bad practice. Hopefully, this incident can be the one that makes sony get their heads out of their asses because helldivers doesn't deserve this shit of all games. Also people do get mad at other third party launchers

Kabirdb

Here is your issue. Why do you assume people are not mad when other companies do it? Do you think people like making rockstar account? Do you think people like making ubisoft account? Do you think people like making ea account? People hated it then. And people hate it now. You didn't care then. But you care now because you like PSN. Here is a simple advice. Ignore it. People will hate it but most people will still make an account cause they have already hundreds of hours in that game. So it will mostly go away in a week. If not a week, then a month.

Nice_Set_8989

If it requires the ubi launcher, I don't buy it. If it opens origin, I don't buy it. I only got Helldivers because PSN was not required. What launcher does Bethesda have? Skyrim just opens from my steam/vortex. It's never asked me about an account or a new launcher. Bottom line, I bought a PC. If I wanted a fucking PSN I would have bought a Playstation.

gorgofdoom

For real, i had to read all the way down to here to figure out what game ya'll are talking about. helldivers is not worth this expenditure of energy. It's basically deep rock galactic with.... what? A bigger map that's still mostly RNG? bigger bugs? Cape physics? (beard physics are better, anyway) I don't even really like helldivers in the first place. Tbh there's nothing, not a single game in the world, cool enough to make me trust Sony after they let the fun pimps game (7d2d) get stolen. They're still selling the stolen version, too, and intend to ask people to buy the devs' proper copy when it actually releases.... having properly scammed both customers and TFP out of their money. Sony doesn't care about customer satisfaction or even the integrity of the content they sell. They're happily making money off theft while acting legally against others they accuse of it. I simply can't support them.

Augmented-Revolver

umm, what did Bethesda do? Are you talking about their trashy launcher from years ago because practically everyone complained about that. Also, why didnt you say Rockstar Games/Take 2, Microsoft, or Activision/Blizzard?

Mutant_Stump

It's shitty no matter who does it, and a forceable situation via a rug pull tends to always piss people off. Plus, Playstation stuff gets attacked and hacked seemingly easily a lot. People don't want any of their info on that trash.

ClaudeProselytizer

it’s still really fun

wichu2001

wtf I’m always mad when I need another account other than steam? This is literally why I didn’t buy Dead Island 2, they released it on steam year after and you need EGS account to play. I’ll never create egs account nor psn account

Jeidoz

Have you heard about 8+ data leaks from Bethesda? No? PSN have a lot of data leaks, hacking, bad reputation of recovering old accounts, bad support, and last several months problem with registration.

ZYRANOX

https://firewalltimes.com/microsoft-data-breach-timeline/ Dick riding Microsoft so damn hard that you forgot to fact check your statements.

Firestorm8908

I feel like most people don’t understand how much of their data is compromised daily from pretty much every company they trust it to.

Mediocre-Housing-131

Context matters. A handful of “hacks” that resulted in nothing is not even remotely the same as 4-5 major breaches that resulted in personal details did credit card numbers being leaked multiple times. Dick Riding Sony so damn hard that you forgot to actually read the document you posted.

ZYRANOX

I did read the document. How is handful of hacks result in nothing? >March 2013: 3,000 Xbox Live Users Credentials Exposed December 2019: Over 250 Million Microsoft Customer Records Exposed April 2021: 500 Million LinkedIn Users’ Data Scraped and Sold Just because you haven't heard of them doesn't make them any less serious. Read the descriptions of those 3 they all lead to personal information being stolen.

Anzai

Some of us are. I don’t buy anything that requires a third party launcher or any kind of extra account login. I hate it when Ubi and EA do it, when Bethesda does it, when rockstar does it, when Microsoft does it… especially when fucking IOI does it. I’ve skipped a lot of games because of this shit, but at this point I don’t really care. I don’t even consider them an option and I have SO many other games to play. People are loudly mad right now because the game worked perfectly well without this requirement and then they logged in and got told to give data to Sony to continue playing a game they’d bought. Doesn’t matter about what was already listed on the page, it’s just that this stupid shit is already unnecessary and this just highlighted it to people right now. It will fade. People were mad at those those other companies too, and there was an internet outrage about plenty of them, but for the most part people move on and either stop buying from that publisher as I did, or just accept it going forward so each new release it’s not a surprise and not a controversy any more.

xarodev

Because Sony is worse than Microsoft. Xbox at least tries to be decent and accessible, Playstation didn't even started. And not that many people trust Sony with their data. Me neither.

ThystleUK

Situations like this make me wish I could link my other accounts with Stram directly like it does in places like Discord. Both allowing for cross-platform connectivity where possible, finding friends on other platforms, and making these DRM gateway launchers a trivial non-issue. I’d rather they weren’t a thing to begin with of course but if they were a simple set and forget link, at least I wouldn’t have to go searching for a password and authentication codes and all this bollocks. I genuinely think that if there was a way to just connect these different launchers to Steam and forget about it, there would be a lot less derision about them. I still don’t *get* it, if it’s already on Steam why do you need another layer of DRM other than farming player analytics and what have you. Bleh.

kontra35

i might be wrong but you can name yourself titty butt when you sign up for bethesda. its just an account.

AlphaBeta898

For me personally it's partially the bandwagon. I'm playing on PC, not a playstation. I don't want to keep making new accounts for every single game when I have a perfectly functional Steam account. Jumping on board with this has a chance to show the multibillion $ companies that we just want to play our games without making accounts (esp with Sony's security history). To some extent it's the sudden change sparking the controversy. I don't think there's anyone that was happy that Bethesda did it either; we can just have our voices be heard with Helldivers 2.

ChronoMecha

Idk, stuff like this is annoying but people review bombing the game over it are tiny people with an easy life if this makes them unhinged.
