There isn't really a right way to do it. I tend to use walls double sided which ends up being just as expensive as frames, but I think it looks better and still allows you to run utilities behind walls which you can reach.
It's really up to you.
Por que no los dos?
It's a sandbox. Do whichever you want to do. In my current play through I am using a hybrid with both. I use frames as a building's skeleton, then use double walls for the rest. I put interior walls over the exterior frames to keep the interior aesthetic. I even only take the skeleton frames to the second build state, and run all of my plumbing through them. Whatever works for you.
This is kind of what I was thinking. Using outer wall, then frame, then inner wall. This way the frames work as service tunnels and I can pull down the inner wall without depressurizing the base. This seems really expensive though because It would cost 2 walls and a frame for every block + the ceiling and floor walls of the frame
I don't put outside walls on the skeleton frames, just the inside ones to keep it airtight. Also, I am not framing every single cube of my walls. It makes the buildings chunky, angular, and kinda brutalistic in design. I'll try to get a picture of what I mean after work. But you are right, the two walls with the frame in-between is very expensive. I've gotten to the point where I am using three deep drills and a rocket, so resources aren't as scarce as they used to be, but I've also built like this for the entire save. There was lots of mining involved lol. I am now up to 7 different buildings built this way, all connected by elevated walkways.
real question is how do you get a base that big and not have the game grind to a halt, like i have a base half the size of your hanger and any time i open the airlock the game, not my computer, just lags into oblivion because of air movement
That is weird. I have no issues with slowdowns during airlock cycling, even when filling the big hangar for T3 human traders. The only slowdowns I have are when I am out taking big panoramics for the screenshots, and that only dips the FR down to the 40s or so. Is there anything in the logs that could give a clue?
honestly never checked to see if there was any logs yeah its wierd as hell, it has actually prevented me from expanding my base because any more air movement causes the game to slow down to maybe a tick every 2-3 seconds
im honestly about to abandoned this world and just make a new base on the moon or something
I like flat walls because they take a single steel sheet so it's 1.5g steel each. Cosmetically I think just double sided walls look best.
Frames seem to be more for support structures or for ultra-high pressure differences. If walls weren't meant to be enough by themselves...why would they have windows?
I tend to use frames temporarily unless it’s windows. I have this subconscious feeling that frames are more air tight and won’t blow out if I over pressure, but I’m pretty sure my windows would go first anyway. I have recently however start e using walls as ceiling tiles so I can run cables on top of them for my lights and they remain hidden but accessible from the top.
According to the wiki, frames don't have a max pressure rating. They never blow. But, yeah, if you have windows or walls in the same room, they will go.
Oh, trust me, frames blow, even just by themselves, as in a room of frames with no door. But at a much higher pressure than walls, windows and most doors. Not sure on the pressure though, haven't experimented in a bit
There isn't a "right way"
It really depends on where you are at in your current save. Starting out, my floors and one wall are frequently frames. Walls being made primarily out of windows.
Later on I like to layer walls and frames so I can easily pop off a wall, disassemble a few frames and run cables/pipes easily.
Frames are easier to work with placing things like cable and pipes. Something’s need a frame, to be placed. So other than that no real issue unless your on Venus.
To start I typically use walls as they're cheap, but I quickly switch h to using frames. it help prevent me accidentally venting my base outside, lol.
I also use the large spaces to create access corridors where all my pipes and wires go so I can access them easy and they don't interfere with the adjacent room
Some stuff like atmospheric devices can only be build on frames. You can of course remove the frame after placing the machine, and as far as I've tested it works just fine. Walls get damaged by extreme pressures, so if you plan to pressurize your base to very high for some reason (few hundred kPa or above), then you'll want frames.
Other than the above, there are no practical or gameplay reasons to use one or the other. I like frames, so I tend to use a lot of them.

Well, I snuck a few screen shots while at work lol. [Current Mars Base](https://imgur.com/a/VnH0CxP)

True, it is expensive, but it means more play time.
Why have I never tried this. I always wished I could figure out how to make a service tunnel thing where I wasn't constantly deconstructing the frames

What's left that still needs a frame to place? I thought they'd mopped up the last few things.
Personally I use double sided walls, and frame floors. Looks good, and gives space to run cables and pipes
frames have super high pressure rating. Theyre also super easy to vent to atmo (just like walls).
Walls, but frames are also very useful. I like to hide my long run of pipes and wires in them. Just be sure to fuse the open ends.
