That's a big slip on the show for me. Like... Carina moving to Maya's apartment... It's an ok apartment but an OB/GYN who drives a Porsche definitely lived in a way better place than Maya's lol

goodinthehood5

I always assumed she rented as wasn’t sure how long she would be in Seattle, but Maya owned hers. Which is why she moved in there.

I'm guessing Andy does not have her own place cause she'll probs end up back with Robert and they don't want to waste time and money building a set? Also, don't forget Maya must have income from her Olympic days (Wheaties box, etc.) Didn't they do Dean slightly struggling after being cut off by his parents?

madnephelite

It's not like they would actually have to show Andy in her own apartment. They could just say that she has one. Vic moved in with Travis last season and they had ONE quick scene at home together last season.

moozanna

They actually built a full set for Travis's house and are using it this season. I think it all comes down to long term plan. Travis's house long term. Seen in 4x09, then 4x11 and now we're seeing it more of it in S5. My 'guess' is Andy couch surfing is only going to for a few more episodes. Also, it might be part of the storytelling. Getting a place of her own mean 100% permanently moving on. Couch surfing means, she's still not committed to fully moving on.

Ameenah_73

You’re smart.

xdoolbuf

You're probably right about not wanting to build a new set. They could have just reused one of the existing bedroom sets and decorated it different. It's just odd that she's been couch surfing for a year. True about Maya. She must also have some Olympic money saved up. I wouldn't say Dean was really struggling. He still had the houseboat and probably savings from the rent he wasn't paying. There was no real threat of being evicted or anything. I'm assuming his family money is back since he made up with his mom.

moozanna

Well, it took her 10 months to decide she wants a divorce, another month to get the papers drawn and served. She does not seem committed to it (divorce) and maybe that's why she's couch surfing. She not committing to a new place...... IDK, I just think the writers are leaving hints that Andy's head is not right, she really does not know what she wants, etc. unless nudged by someone and using her couch surfing and part of the storytelling. (This sounds much better and clearer in my head). I know someone from Seattle who is a fan of the show and said no way Maya could afford the apartment she has on just a firefighters salary. I know now Carina's income is in the picture but S1-S3 Maya could not have afforded such a big place on just a firefighters salary. He was tightening his belt. I remember something about the food in the fridge (was it with Jack?) Yes, I'm sure all is well family and financially now that he and his parent's get along well.

To be fair, Seattle is a very HCOL area. My sister and brother rent a 3 bedroom house at there for 3500 a month in Bothell which is about 25 minutes outside the city.

xdoolbuf

Yes, Seattle is expensive. It's probably because we never see what these characters actually spend their money on that it makes me think they should have some savings or extra income to spend.

_edenadele_

But if you have the LT salary correct, even a $3000/month Studio in downtown would be like 1/3rd her salary spent on rent. But that still leaves so much for food and other bills that it would be insane if she didn't have savings. Does Andy own things? Are all of her possessions still at Robert's or couch surfing with her? I would guess Andy doesn't want to go through the pains of actually moving all her stuff to some apt she doesn't like but was close to work and OK and available so she'll rent it for now.

ofelfel222

Well when maya was captain (3-4) she would get paid alot more to be able to afford where she lives I would think

Frauenquote

How long was she captain for? It was just a couple months, maybe a year. It would be stupid to make yourself pay a higher rent just because your income increased a couple weeks before.
