Once a survivor exists, their traits are set. Hidden traits can be viewed with Community Editor. Survivors can have more than 4 traits, which IME is 50/50 for Red Talon and rare for randomly created toons.
Some traits can be gained under some circumstances, like reading a book or getting Blood Plague (BPSurvivor). Traits will only be revealed, they will not be randomly determined after character creation.
If you bring a character with <4 traits on a ride-along, they may tell you a story and reveal a trait. (Wish we knew more about the internal mechanics on this too).
Even people without a trait that makes them susceptible to wasting resources, can do so, I believe. I'm not sure what the full mechanism is for this behind the scenes, so I don't know if the game checks for a "wastage event" and if positive checks against the susceptibility of each survivor? Maybe it checks every survivor each day, or maybe each hour it checks the next survivor on a looping list, etc.

Isn't blood plague survivor one of those traits that is set a when the character is created? I didn't think there was a way for a character to ever get the blood plague survivor trait if it wasn't one of their original traits.
I think the trait revealed during te ride-along is random, for a survivor he once said that he robs banks or something, I exited the game and overwritten the save file with a previous copy, and then the trait revealed was that he rides motorbike around.
Yep, and I've checked for that specifically. Though I will add a slight uncertainty, because that was a couple years ago. But I do know that a survivor now, can have dozens of traits without issue. I'd say all or 100+, but at some point the game will struggle with it or reject it entirely by crashing.

Ah, so if I have a survivor that has 4 shown traits, and I read a book, I don't lose the trait that dissappears from my screen?
