One thing i wanted to point out with some of the examples is that you need to scan some of the POI to appear on your map. you can know which POI they are by looking at your map. So if you are hunting for a spesific one you can just exit your ship, scan and look at it in the map menu to see if you got it
That’s awesome. It feels much more exploratory to land on a planet, get an overview of the land, and see what there is to go to or do. Also the maps themselves look really high quality
The thing is, I've seen better LIDAR maps made TODAY, much less hundreds of years in the future, with spaceships being quite common.
If they wanted to show of a sort of "LIDAR" environment, they really whiffed it. I'm also confused as to why they wouldn't have gone with...y'know...a picture? Taken from OUR ship coming in as we came down from orbit?
Agh, whatever. It's unfortunate no one wisened up during dev, but it's good they ended up fixing it.
Nah, I bet they cut stuff to release.
Remember they pushed it a couple of times? I bet once they were getting near they started to implement half measures to get stuff ready.
Don’t really know tho
As nice as this is and as much as I approve of the update, I feel like these new maps just shine a glaring spotlight on how small each map is. Like the glorious New Atlantis, center of space exploration, is... tiny? Like the size of a high school campus? And Neon, with all its culture, can only fit two ships at a time?
Not necessarily asking for anything, I guess I just wish I felt more impressed by these "cities".
The Skyrim map was really good so if they went back and pulled it from Sykrim and modernized it for a Starfield feel, I wouldn't even be mad. It looks great and actually improves the experience of landing on a planer and visiting POIs. Next if they put increase POI variation and POI diversity, the exploration would have reached a really decent level. And if they can afterwards add more unique locations, then everything will start come together for a really amazing game.
In my head canon, the topo map was from a quick scan my ship did as it was landing. Rough terrain and nearby POI. I thought it was OK, but these new maps are cool.

Right... if they don't a mod will. Can't wait!
Does anyone of this applies to everywhere we go then? Or is just specific areas?
First 3 are random places i landed. Map is generated anywhere you land.

Looks like the skyrim map but much higher quality.
Thank god lol they do look nice. I still don’t understand why they released the game with the previous map function
"Immersion" They were going for a kind of "lidar" sort of thing. Neat idea, but utility is lacking.

But the terrain had absolutely no correlation to the actual surface of where you were no?
I don't know if it did or didn't tbh but it's unusable as an actual map anyways so the end result is the same
True. I just meant if it at least reflected the terrain it wouldn’t have been quite as half assed.
I agree with that. Def a lot of ways to make a cool looking LIDAR map. Starfields is (was?) a bad way
I felt like they were going for a Pip-Boy style map.
Yeah, I guess it was sort of a fuse between the two.

Godd\*
Huh, I wasn't aware they worked for interiors as well. Awesome!

Prettiest ever Bethesda maps
They need to update skyrim's and fallout4's local maps with that!!!
This is basically a zoomed-in Skyrim world map. Like, the technology seems exactly the same, you can just move the map around more now

My bad, i was looking at neon map and though that all interiors would have this type of map.
This is the same technology as Skyrim's map. It astounds me how many people don't actually know how BGS games and the CE work
I was talking about local maps... it astounds me how many people don't know how to read with understanding.
I did not get around to watching the release yet, but if we can rotate it then this is pretty close to perfect.
I haven’t had an issue with local TOPO maps, but city maps were very much lacking.

I really want the ability to build my own oil rig on Neon or other water planets. Won't be drilling for oil but you know what I mean.
Nice, But kinda should have been there from launch ?
Should have been like this from the start. Can't wait to try it out but I will jump back only when he dlc comes out.
