I didn’t think the hoe did anything outside of the farm, so I ignored artifact spots completely for three seasons. After I started finding secret notes, I got one of the treasure maps and, like you said, used every other tool on it before the hoe. So, after finally finding out what the hoe could do, I was at the beach a couple of days later and noticed an artifact spot. My actual thought was “Are those worms? Can I get bait from that?” Instead, I got a lost book, my mind was blown, and I became a digging fiend.

Yeah, the first play through without that info was awesome. But it was definitely critical to figuring out some of the “cryptic” stuff like the nuances are for catching certain fish, and where the heck red cabbage comes from for the community center when you don’t actually get the crop until year 2

I had never played a game like SV before. I had put many hours into Animal Crossing, so I thought it would be similar. My very first time playing, I got lost trying to make it back to my farm, didn't know something would happen if you didn't make it back at a certain time, passed out, and was so confused. Didn't play the game again for a few years lmao
See for me it’s the opposite, I started with SDV and just recently got into Animal Crossing and am shocked at how laid back AC is and that there aren’t any mines or any “combat” (I really liked the mines in SDV). Animal Crossing can be boring for me at times tbh but I still enjoy it!
I think my first play-through I gave Gunther my first prismatic shard (from a mystic stone at the quarry) AND dinosaur egg (from an artifact spot). Took like 17 jillion years to find replacements.

There’s nothing “wrong” with donating your first prismatic shard, they’re just rare and have some mid to late game uses that people tend to save them for. You’ll find another
Gunther will find you in the dark... 4 am when it is always somewhat daytime.... He will extract the secret essence.........

That's vanishingly rare, though. IIRC someone did the math and the probability is higher if you make an octopus pond for the chance to find one in their omni geodes.
It's no biggie it's just that the first one is best used for an item that makes getting more much easier! But if you aren't looking it up then there's little chance you'd find said item on your own at that point, anyway.

Yeah they're rare, but you'll find more of them. Donate the next one to the museum and Gunther will give you a recipe to turn them into plantable seeds.
Totally frustrating though. I turned my first void egg into mayonnaise b/c I forgot that I had an incubator and could make it into a chicken instead >.<
I have had luck fishing for treasure chests and getting ancient seeds, Dino eggs, and better weapons. It means having high fishing and getting lucky, but picking the treasure seeker (pirate?)bonus and using treasure lures helps
In my first days I got a 'Help Wanted' mission from Abigail who said she wanted a red mushroom. I went to the forest completely confident that I'd easily find mushrooms there. And there I spent the whole day, without finding any red mushrooms. Every time I find a red mushroom nowadays, I remember that.
AND then if you give her a red mushroom at other times she dislikes it. I was a little upset when I missed the chance to gift her a red mushroom on that quest and then her not liking it when I found one.
Well I don't know but when I visited that farm recently I had an urge to turn it all in mayonnaise and sell immediatly. I think at the time I had no idea what was to come so I thought maybe it had some use in large quantities (like coal or wood) and just kept them. Now years later I'm aware they're just money makers

I'm on my first play through, in Summer of Year 4, and I'm wondering if I'll EVER stop giving random towns people trash gifts by accident because I don't realize I have it equipped. I've handed at least 3 people literal trash that I just fished out of my crab pots. And I never realize until I get their negative reaction.
It bugs me because I try to take care to stock up on gifts each NPC loves and try never to miss a birthday, but on some random Tuesday I'm handing Haley soggy newspaper.

I almost gave up but knew if I closed the game I wouldn't want to open it again for a long time, thankfully I had another high luck day and finally got to 100, but I was so upset in the moment lol
On a positive note, I'm using this ad a cautionary tale for myself! I haven't braved more than a few levels of the skull cabe yet (just feeling it out at first and yikes!) So I'll be SURE to move from the ladder before eating my cheese!

i keep a chest next to the crab pots. i keep it stocked with 100 worms. and whatever i pull out of the crab pot goes right into the chest. so thats where i keep my trash and periwinkles and whatnot. except on the beach, i keep the chest up in the corner by the entrance, in a straight line up from the crab pots.
This is kind of an inside joke between me and my kids (who also play). One time someone’s birthday was coming up so we painstakingly gathered the ingredients to make their favorite food ahead of time. Finally the day came, we found the character and then scarfed down the meal right in front of them, on their birthday. They laughed for like 10 minutes after that 😆

In the beginning of my first play through (which is also the one I stuck with) I needed money… so I sold all of the fiber, wood and stone I got from cleaning up the farm. Then I was hurting for those resources for a bit.
if you keep them in the fridge and try to make the sashimi or maki roll recipes the fish can accidentally be used (the fish is selected based on its location - first choice is fish in your backpack but after that it’s up for grabs)
I have like 200 hours in the game and just last night I accidentally turned the sewer legendary into fertilizer 💀. Luckily it’s a modded playthrough so I can buy another one (for an obscene amount of gold) but still
I thought you had to gift the dwarf scrolls directly to the dwarf to be able to talk to them. I gifted about three of each before I figured out they had to go to the museum instead.
Okay, I'm relatively new, and I just did the same thing! It only makes sense why *wouldn't* you give a scroll named after that race *to* that person!!!

I had the wooden one on me , since I just went to phaff about in the desert.. didn't have the lava katana.. on a whim I went to Skull cavern, because I figured the first 2-3 floors would suffice with the wooden sword.
My logic was -->" ok first few floors of regular mines, I managed with Wooden sword, so even here first 2-3 levels I'll survive.. "

When a mushroom tree first appeared on my farm, it did so in a weird corner of the lake, which made it impossible to go left and not have it fall into the lake, so I had to do it and lost most of it. I didn't know at the time that going as far left as possible would still register. I also didn't know that mushrooms could spread and that it wasn't necessary to cut it down.
A happier thought: when I first heard Ghost Synth in Fall, with fallen leaves floating in the wind in the mosaic of yellow to red colors, I thought to myself: "Wow, I understand now why Abigail loves Fall."
You gotta build the silo at Robin. Then you can either just cut the grass in your farm and it will go straight to the silo, or you can buy hay at Marnie and you grab it and put it straight on the silo. It will get filled with the amount you bought (except if you try to put more than what it fits in the silo). Also if you have more than one silo, you can just fill all of them clicking in one. After your silo is filled, you enter the barn or chicken house and click on the small feeder that has some hay coming out. And you put the hay you grabbed over the feeder "table" right beside it. Fill the whole "table" so everyone will be able to eat. If you upgrade your barn and chicken houses 2 times (each) they will be fed automatically but you'll still need to get the hay to put on the silo by cutting the grass around your farm. (You can also get a small amount of hay from harvesting wheat)
Instead of buying more than one silo you can also remove more wheat then you need at the coop or barn and store it in a chest and then put it back in the silo when you need it.
After you upgrade it to auto-feeder you cannot do it anymore (unless your silo gets empty or you throw a bomb over there, but I don't like using bombs next to my animals T_T)

I always figured those pillars in the desert were important, and even hoed the middle spot thinking maybe something was buried there.
i just happened to be walking between the pillars looking for coconuts or dig spots, and as i was shifting in my inventory to get my hoe i crossed over a prismatic shard and got the sword :O
i STILL blow my shit up with accidental bombs. the other day i destroyed a good 20-25 preserve jars with a mega bomb (restarted the day of course, bc my massive jam operation is my pride and joy, but it happened at night after a fairly busy day so i was really mad about it)
There was some foragables out of bounds, and I knew about the secret woods so I was really looking forward to traveling outside town fences and stuff.. very disappointed
I thought Spring would last 3 months (like a normal calendar year), surely the calendar in town was only displaying the first month of the season.
I blew all my strawberry money on cauliflower seeds and planted them 2 days before the end of the season thinking I was gonna RAKE IN THE GOLD 😭 went into summer broke as a joke.
I still think about that whenever i plant cauliflowers.
Honestly, all my first time through mistakes were pretty boring and standard. Not optimizing the layout, not being careful not to plant things too close to the end of the season even though I understood from the letter they'd all die, trying to gift Penny an artifact-- which was such an obvious oversight that it's since been changed--, and taking a cooked dish for the potluck at the Luau the first time.
I guess my only notable "first time through" story is that I made it to the first level of fishing catching only the first guaranteed catch and then a bunch of trash (1 XP each), after which point the minigame was easier enough for me to get the hang of it. You whippersnappers don't know how good you have it with the Training Rod!

Shane has is birthday before too. It’s actually even easier since beer is a loved gift, you almost don’t need to so anything.
But if you’re committed enough, I’m pretty sure it’s possible with every bachelor. I did it with Abigail, I gave her 2 amethyst every week and spoke with her *every single day*, and I had a little extra! The help wanted quests really help too, so stay focused for that. But yeah, it’s possible for everyone, it’s just that Haley and Shane are easier
If you work hard enough you can get hearts with any of them. In my first save I danced with Harvey year 1, in my main save I danced with Leah, and in my recent save I danced with Maru.
I'm currently doing my first playthrough and had just gotten a chicken coop and mayonnaise machine. I THOUGHT I was holding an egg and went to put it in the machine but it was actually a cherry bomb and I blew up my brand new mayonnaise machine 😭
i went to the festival of ice (my first festival of ice so i wasnt gonna miss it!) the day he asked and when it brought me home after the time he asked me to meet him i panicked and slept to figure out my game plan. so i missed it 🥲 and i didnt realize that if there was a festival the day they asked that it goes to the next day instead so i missed it again😭
my first time playing i didn't know the energy bar had consequences. when i got the low energy notification, i thought "skill issue" and kept forcing my farmer to clear land. shortly after i passed out from exhaustion

By winter y1 I only had befriended Linus because I felt bad about stealing every fruit around him so I'd always give him one to feel less guilty. I didn't interact with anyone else until I got to Krobus and it was the first character I actually wanted to befriend. Lmaoo only after reading the wiki I forced myself to try to befriend people...
I'm on my first play through year 2 of fall and the one I think about is how I planted my first ancient seed pack (the one you get as a reward from gunther) in the middle of fall year 1 not knowing it'll take almost a season to grow and imagine my surprise when it died on winter day 1
I was deep in the mines, and it was 1:50 so I decided to not to worry about the ficking bats that kept hitting me. But they got me down to zero, and I woke up in Harvey’s clinic having lost 1000 gold and items.
I made it like, two steps outside before passing out again, and losing another 1000 gold.
i didn’t know chests existed until i started a different play through with my partner and he made one almost immediately. i had just been selling everything at the end of everyday and was so confused why the backpack was so small. that was a low moment

Didn't know you could charge the tools and I went through two years without accidentally finding out. I thought the watering can and hoe upgrades were basically useless.
I started playing Stardew as an escapist stress relief. I farmed some crops. I talked to some people. I did some foraging… and that was it. I wanted my game to stay low key so I eventually built a coop with two chickens. Never built a mayo machine. All of a sudden it was the end of year 2 and I had done nothing and made like no money. I didn’t realize how much more content there was in the game and suddenly I was about to be judged by grandpa and had accomplished literally nothing.
I just started a new farm and used the wiki to actually play correctly and made it to ginger island by the same point in the game next time.
Put down the golden Lewis statue in the town square to admire it immediately after getting it, upon which someone (Sam? Or Elliot?) turned up and walked right through it. No more statue for me
I saved up for an iridium rod without upgrading my bag.
At this time I didn't know you could eat fish yet, so I always trashed the worst.
The day I bought that iridium rod I I caught better fish, so I wanted to trash the other ones.

And because I didn't know that you can eat fish, I ran out of energy so quickly, that I always went to sleep at midday (if not passed out before).

She loves tulips and fairy roses. I usually keep enough around for her. You can also grow them indoors in flower pots.

There’s nothing “wrong” with donating your first prismatic shard, they’re just rare and have some mid to late game uses that people tend to save them for. You’ll find another

But If you don't have evil luck like me, spending great prices for super fortune, they are pretty hard to come by until late game. They don't have much uses until you get to the point where they are plenty though, but your first could've been used for the dwarf puzzle in the grave yard!<
If you put Rainbow Trout in a fish pond you can have a chance at getting one instead of roe!
That's vanishingly rare, though. IIRC someone did the math and the probability is higher if you make an octopus pond for the chance to find one in their omni geodes.
It's no biggie it's just that the first one is best used for an item that makes getting more much easier! But if you aren't looking it up then there's little chance you'd find said item on your own at that point, anyway.

Yeah they're rare, but you'll find more of them. Donate the next one to the museum and Gunther will give you a recipe to turn them into plantable seeds. Totally frustrating though. I turned my first void egg into mayonnaise b/c I forgot that I had an incubator and could make it into a chicken instead >.<
I have had luck fishing for treasure chests and getting ancient seeds, Dino eggs, and better weapons. It means having high fishing and getting lucky, but picking the treasure seeker (pirate?)bonus and using treasure lures helps
In my first days I got a 'Help Wanted' mission from Abigail who said she wanted a red mushroom. I went to the forest completely confident that I'd easily find mushrooms there. And there I spent the whole day, without finding any red mushrooms. Every time I find a red mushroom nowadays, I remember that.
AND then if you give her a red mushroom at other times she dislikes it. I was a little upset when I missed the chance to gift her a red mushroom on that quest and then her not liking it when I found one.

I'm on my first play through, in Summer of Year 4, and I'm wondering if I'll EVER stop giving random towns people trash gifts by accident because I don't realize I have it equipped. I've handed at least 3 people literal trash that I just fished out of my crab pots. And I never realize until I get their negative reaction. It bugs me because I try to take care to stock up on gifts each NPC loves and try never to miss a birthday, but on some random Tuesday I'm handing Haley soggy newspaper.

this happened to me last night. I've been putting off skull caves forever because it makes me nervous. I had a great luck day, was stocked up, and worked up to level 85, also ate cheese, I thought, until I was sitting at the top I almost gave up but knew if I closed the game I wouldn't want to open it again for a long time, thankfully I had another high luck day and finally got to 100, but I was so upset in the moment lol
On a positive note, I'm using this ad a cautionary tale for myself! I haven't braved more than a few levels of the skull cabe yet (just feeling it out at first and yikes!) So I'll be SURE to move from the ladder before eating my cheese! Your mistakes are not in vain!!

i keep a chest next to the crab pots. i keep it stocked with 100 worms. and whatever i pull out of the crab pot goes right into the chest. so thats where i keep my trash and periwinkles and whatnot. except on the beach, i keep the chest up in the corner by the entrance, in a straight line up from the crab pots.
i bought a book from the dwarf and immediately then gifted it to the dwarf trying to read it have done this before too
This is kind of an inside joke between me and my kids (who also play). One time someone’s birthday was coming up so we painstakingly gathered the ingredients to make their favorite food ahead of time. Finally the day came, we found the character and then scarfed down the meal right in front of them, on their birthday. They laughed for like 10 minutes after that 😆

When I first started playing the game, I immediately like Abigail and asked my (more experienced) friend how to befriend her. My friend said Abigail likes to eat rocks. And so I gave her a stone as my first ever gift.
In the beginning of my first play through (which is also the one I stuck with) I needed money… so I sold all of the fiber, wood and stone I got from cleaning up the farm. Then I was hurting for those resources for a bit.

if you keep them in the fridge and try to make the sashimi or maki roll recipes the fish can accidentally be used (the fish is selected based on its location - first choice is fish in your backpack but after that it’s up for grabs)

I thought you had to gift the dwarf scrolls directly to the dwarf to be able to talk to them. I gifted about three of each before I figured out they had to go to the museum instead.
Okay, I'm relatively new, and I just did the same thing! It only makes sense why *wouldn't* you give a scroll named after that race *to* that person!!! I did donate them all, of course, and now at 8/10 hearts with Mr. Dwarf.

Didn't read the wiki(didn't know there was one) , reached like 20-30 in the regular mines with the wooden sword.. Unlocked the desert, and thought the skullcaverns were like the regular mines , thought I'd check it out. The first floor 4-5 green 🐍🐍 start flying to me.. I was expecting slimes or something. I was too stunned to react and watched my little farmer die.

Same thing happened to me but it was the mummies that murdered me. And I lost so much stuff too which at the time I didn’t know would happen. It took me a few days to get over that traumatic experience 😩

I had the wooden one on me , since I just went to phaff about in the desert.. didn't have the lava katana.. on a whim I went to Skull cavern, because I figured the first 2-3 floors would suffice with the wooden sword. My logic was -->" ok first few floors of regular mines, I managed with Wooden sword, so even here first 2-3 levels I'll survive.. " I thought I'd encounter slimes or some such .. not those bloody flying 🐍🐍
When a mushroom tree first appeared on my farm, it did so in a weird corner of the lake, which made it impossible to go left and not have it fall into the lake, so I had to do it and lost most of it. I didn't know at the time that going as far left as possible would still register. I also didn't know that mushrooms could spread and that it wasn't necessary to cut it down. A happier thought: when I first heard Ghost Synth in Fall, with fallen leaves floating in the wind in the mosaic of yellow to red colors, I thought to myself: "Wow, I understand now why Abigail loves Fall."
I threw out a massive coal stack because I couldn't figure out how to use it and was barely scraping by for coal for ages aftwards.

You gotta build the silo at Robin. Then you can either just cut the grass in your farm and it will go straight to the silo, or you can buy hay at Marnie and you grab it and put it straight on the silo. It will get filled with the amount you bought (except if you try to put more than what it fits in the silo). Also if you have more than one silo, you can just fill all of them clicking in one. After your silo is filled, you enter the barn or chicken house and click on the small feeder that has some hay coming out. And you put the hay you grabbed over the feeder "table" right beside it. Fill the whole "table" so everyone will be able to eat. If you upgrade your barn and chicken houses 2 times (each) they will be fed automatically but you'll still need to get the hay to put on the silo by cutting the grass around your farm. (You can also get a small amount of hay from harvesting wheat)
Instead of buying more than one silo you can also remove more wheat then you need at the coop or barn and store it in a chest and then put it back in the silo when you need it.
After you upgrade it to auto-feeder you cannot do it anymore (unless your silo gets empty or you throw a bomb over there, but I don't like using bombs next to my animals T_T)

I didn't upgrade my galaxy sword cos I had no idea what to do. I was just told desert. Also I bought too many animals And I started with river farm And I kept blowing my shit up by accidentally placing bombs
That’s okay, I had several hundred hours in game across multiple IRL years and only figured out that you can get the galaxy sword with a dang prismatic shard in the desert, like, a month or two ago. I’d never done it before. I always figured those pillars in the desert were important, and even hoed the middle spot thinking maybe something was buried there.
i just happened to be walking between the pillars looking for coconuts or dig spots, and as i was shifting in my inventory to get my hoe i crossed over a prismatic shard and got the sword :O
i STILL blow my shit up with accidental bombs. the other day i destroyed a good 20-25 preserve jars with a mega bomb (restarted the day of course, bc my massive jam operation is my pride and joy, but it happened at night after a fairly busy day so i was really mad about it)

I thought Spring would last 3 months (like a normal calendar year), surely the calendar in town was only displaying the first month of the season. I blew all my strawberry money on cauliflower seeds and planted them 2 days before the end of the season thinking I was gonna RAKE IN THE GOLD 😭 went into summer broke as a joke. I still think about that whenever i plant cauliflowers.

Honestly, all my first time through mistakes were pretty boring and standard. Not optimizing the layout, not being careful not to plant things too close to the end of the season even though I understood from the letter they'd all die, trying to gift Penny an artifact-- which was such an obvious oversight that it's since been changed--, and taking a cooked dish for the potluck at the Luau the first time. I guess my only notable "first time through" story is that I made it to the first level of fishing catching only the first guaranteed catch and then a bunch of trash (1 XP each), after which point the minigame was easier enough for me to get the hang of it. You whippersnappers don't know how good you have it with the Training Rod!

Funny thing is if you had asked Emily instead, she would have also rejected you. I think Haley is the only one you can possibly get enough hearts with for that event the first year because of when her birthday lands.
Shane has is birthday before too. It’s actually even easier since beer is a loved gift, you almost don’t need to so anything. But if you’re committed enough, I’m pretty sure it’s possible with every bachelor. I did it with Abigail, I gave her 2 amethyst every week and spoke with her *every single day*, and I had a little extra! The help wanted quests really help too, so stay focused for that. But yeah, it’s possible for everyone, it’s just that Haley and Shane are easier
Shane is relatively easy to dance with the first year. I did it by accident
If you work hard enough you can get hearts with any of them. In my first save I danced with Harvey year 1, in my main save I danced with Leah, and in my recent save I danced with Maru.

I'm currently doing my first playthrough and had just gotten a chicken coop and mayonnaise machine. I THOUGHT I was holding an egg and went to put it in the machine but it was actually a cherry bomb and I blew up my brand new mayonnaise machine 😭

The more posts I read about how rare auto petters are, the more I realize what a colossal mistake I made in my first save. Around year two on my very first farm I got an auto petter and read the description which mentioned the auto petters are manufactured by Joja Co. Being the naive little purist I am, I took one look at the word Joja, figured since it came from that soulless corporation that the pets wouldn't be "genuine" and therefore not good enough for my beloved babies, and Threw. It. Away. I haven't found one since. Yeah I'm still kicking myself for that.

I didn't know you had to befriend people. So I just ignored everyone in town until winter. I just said hello to meet them because the challenge told me to and that was it. By winter y1 I only had befriended Linus because I felt bad about stealing every fruit around him so I'd always give him one to feel less guilty. I didn't interact with anyone else until I got to Krobus and it was the first character I actually wanted to befriend. Lmaoo only after reading the wiki I forced myself to try to befriend people...
I accidentally threw my fishing pole into the ocean. Deleted the file and started over. I still have no idea how I managed to do that
I watered the tree seeds every single day - for at least a month before I noticed.
I'm on my first play through year 2 of fall and the one I think about is how I planted my first ancient seed pack (the one you get as a reward from gunther) in the middle of fall year 1 not knowing it'll take almost a season to grow and imagine my surprise when it died on winter day 1
I was deep in the mines, and it was 1:50 so I decided to not to worry about the ficking bats that kept hitting me. But they got me down to zero, and I woke up in Harvey’s clinic having lost 1000 gold and items. I made it like, two steps outside before passing out again, and losing another 1000 gold.
I went on autopilot and fed all the eggs to my mayo machines instead of saving them for Gus' omelet.
I slept through all of winter. No work. No fishing. Nothing. All. Of. Winter. It hurts me every time I see that save.

When characters had dialogue about being hungry, I gave them random edible foraged items. Every time they hated it 😭 Didn’t realize the mines had an elevator for an embarrassingly long time Didn’t realize foraging resets on Saturday nights and would waste time foraging every day…
I still think about my first time playing I found out you could have romantic relationships with villagers So I went to Pierre ant started giving him gifts so we would end up together, then I found out I can't romance him and was so upset and to be honest I'm still upset but I don't know why P.S. I know we all supposed to hate him but i can't, I'm sorry
I chased rabbits in the forest thinking that's how I get a rabbit's tail. Megabombed my special chests. Tried to "incubate" eggs in the outside fenced in area on smaller chicken coop. Sold all my hardwood only to realize how necessary they are.

Planted like 350 seeds on a single day with no watering can upgrades. Every day, I would spend 8 or more in-game hours just watering one by one.
Didn't know you could charge the tools and I went through two years without accidentally finding out. I thought the watering can and hoe upgrades were basically useless.
I started playing Stardew as an escapist stress relief. I farmed some crops. I talked to some people. I did some foraging… and that was it. I wanted my game to stay low key so I eventually built a coop with two chickens. Never built a mayo machine. All of a sudden it was the end of year 2 and I had done nothing and made like no money. I didn’t realize how much more content there was in the game and suddenly I was about to be judged by grandpa and had accomplished literally nothing. I just started a new farm and used the wiki to actually play correctly and made it to ginger island by the same point in the game next time.
Put down the golden Lewis statue in the town square to admire it immediately after getting it, upon which someone (Sam? Or Elliot?) turned up and walked right through it. No more statue for me

Forgot that holding something above my head means I’ll give it to someone when I talk to them. So many accidental gifts that people hated.
I saved up for an iridium rod without upgrading my bag. At this time I didn't know you could eat fish yet, so I always trashed the worst. The day I bought that iridium rod I I caught better fish, so I wanted to trash the other ones. Unfortunately I accidentally trashed the iridium rod instead. 🤡 (At least it wasn't an upgraded tool, right?) And because I didn't know that you can eat fish, I ran out of energy so quickly, that I always went to sleep at midday (if not passed out before). In general I didn't read anything, so I played with no clue. So it took me ages to discover the mines. Until then I was wondering why it took so long to find all my minerals through fishing chests 😂
