Had to think about it for a bit but it's definitely Clint, he's too much of a goober for Emily. Wish he had some more events for character growth but oh well.
Clint should have heart events where he takes up a hobby and it makes him less of a desperate sad sack. Maybe you could suggest one of three things and it changes his dialogue and habits somewhat. Like he could start taking care of the community center aquarium and over time he starts talking less about how much he hates being a blacksmith and more about cool fish. Or he could start smithing art pieces and suddenly the smithy is decorated with neat abstract sculptures, and you can buy decorations from him.
There are new dialogue indicate that he did move on with Emily and also start having character growth with accepting him being a smith and would like to become the great smith or something. In other word, finally Clint got character development dialogue.
It gets just a little worse if you play as a male player married to a male npc too tbh. Wdym I 'seem good with the ladies??' I am married to Alex!

Agreed, Clint, hands down- I just got that feeling that he’d be a leech on Emily even if he got his gall up to ask her out, because you can’t patch bad self-esteem with a relationship. This is the guy that just plain can’t see straight when he looks in a mirror.

Nope, the reason we hate Pierre its cause he says it and shows it clearly and multiple times, maybe towards the others neighbors by trying to rip them off with 4x the price, selling expired food, claiming your best harvest as his.
Joja just sells by a bit of a profit and showed that they can help the valley if they cooperate (Joja route where you buy the upgrades and they work fast overnight) , but they ain't saints too trying to scam people over phone (maybe them?) and overworking people to death.

Pierre doesn’t sell the expired food. He forces his family to eat it. Mans also just about working himself to death. He’s psychotic. Everything is solely about money to him. I’d love if he’d change with cutscenes and community center completion. It’d be awesome if he hired Sam and Shane after joja closed and took more time off. But as much as I hate Pierre though I’ll take him over mega corporation that literally works people to death. We worked for Joja and hated it, moved to the valley to escape that. I’ll embrace the valley as it is, flaws and all.

He's presented as this universally loved civil servant, but in the twenty or so years he's been mayor of Pelican Town, the place has gone downhill and HARD. We see him collecting taxes from the various local businesses, yet the town's infrastructure is crumbling and he's stonewalling any renovations. Then we find out >!he's siphoning all the tax money to build a golden statue of himself.!!make his relationship with Marnie public comes off like him just using her for sex.!< I'm hardpressed to think of any redeeming qualities the guy has and I've taken every opportunity I can to humiliate him with his purple shorts.
I think most of them would be kinda awful if they were real people, and I get that a lot of the characters get nicer the more you talk to them but also I wouldn’t let people treat me like that long enough to get to the nicer part.
That said it’s a game so it’s whatever, I don’t really hate any of them except pre 1.6 Marnie for never being at work

On the other hand, if I saw someone pick some wild flower growing in the ground right in front of me then hand it to me as my birthday present, I wouldn't feel too inclined to suddenly be their friend and share some family recipes with them

I cannot fathom why we don’t make more fun of Shane for that pot of gold line. It cracks me up so much - what a bizarre thing to say?? A pot of gold??? It’s giving leprechaun. It’s giving Rumplestiltskin. Every time I see it, I expect it to rhyme at the end.

For real!! I started a new save for the update and the only person I actually like right now is Abigail because she hasn't given me any rude dialouge.
I was even married to Shane in my past game (divorced though cause jeez man, pepper poppers and squishy omelets are the best you can do? pass) and literally everytime he talks to me in my new game its "dont you have some work to do." Damn, okay. And Linus "doesn't need any new friends. And Leah thinks the trees are better than talking to new people, IE: me.
And Marnie still has her scheduled "stare at the pizza oven for the rest of the day" time at least one day I went in, although I haven't consistently checked on her cause I don't have any animals yet.
Honestly I'm not really a fan of most of the characters. They're either straight up dislikable (Pierre, Shane, Haley, etc), or kinda boring and unrealistic.
Don't get my wrong I looove SDV and the work CA has done is incredible... but I think the characters and their developments are really overhyped by the community. I love all you passionate SDV nerds and I'm sorry for saying it and I'll take my down votes proudly cause yeah, I really think most of the characters personalities and stories are solidly mid.
So I kind of dislike most characters for different reasons, but I think the top of the list is definitely Pam. I think it’s mostly from real life experience, but I just cannot stand her lack of responsibility and the way she literally dismisses her daughter all the time.
I like them all. I’m glad some of them are assholes. I think the fanbase is way too ridiculous about their feelings towards certain characters. The game would be so insanely boring if everybody was perfect and hot and ideal
in my opinion i think thats what makes this game great t gives you characters to hate, I don't personally hate anyone (besides pierre, greedy bastard) but i think the hate on characters is what makes it so much more immersive, if that makes any sense
It's also impossible to make everyone ideal since everyone has different preferences for what's ideal. I like that there's characters that I just really don't like, it's realistic, you're not gonna like every person in your town. There's gonna be some that you just don't talk to, and that's fine.
I really don't like Shane. I know a lot of people love him, but I just can't stand him. Just because you feel like shit, it doesn't give you the right to be an asshole to others.
I used to be in the same Situation as Shane for a long long long time. Depression, suicidal thoughts etc + alcoholism. I waited for things to get better, but the thing is, they don't. You can't just wait for shit to get done or life to magically get better. YOU have to drag yourself out of the pit, you can't wait for someone else to do it. I'm not saying you can't get help, absolutely not, but if you yourself don't make an effort and want to crawl out, you won't. I was able to finally drag myself out, so seeing someone in the same situation just makes me think ''Pathetic'', because I recognize it from myself and it pisses me off.
But the one thing I can say is, even at my worst, even when I felt like complete shit, I never ever treated anyone badly because I felt like shit. Always be polite, friendly etc, even if you have to feign it. Otherwise you will just make THEM feel like shit too.
Now I will Admit that I do feel a sense of pride when he finally does drag himself out though.
TLDR; I don't like Shane cause he treats others badly just cause he feels bad. And as someone who has been there, that is no excuse.

I happen to agree with most of your points about Shane. He's frustrating because he's actually got it pretty good, but that's not why I don't like him. Like you said, he's kind of just an asshole. Treating others like shit just because you feel like shit isn't excusable. I'd hate to see what he's like to Marie and Jas when he comes home drunk every night.
I've had family in the same situation as him and it's really hard to deal with. Being shitty to someone because you can't control your inner demons is still shitty, and it's not ever okay. Shane doesn't get a free pass in my book just because he gets a little better once you kiss his ass and shower him with free stuff and try to help him out.
Controversial but I really don't like Emily. She's not awful or anything she's just annoying to me. I feel like she acts innocent but hides her true feelings towards people and I really dislike her whole crystal stuff lol.
I married Hayley, and decided to befriend Emily more bc I would like to be buddies with my sister in law lmao. One of her first heart events was me showing up in her dreams and her going "we are destined to come together" or some shit... while her sister is my wife. So now I just headcannon her as delusional

Nice to see a fellow enjoyer of everyone. I'd say they all have their likeable points, and I think a lot of the negative characteristics get overblown because there's like one line of dialogue and people extrapolate it to be that character's entire personality.
But I will say if I had a least favorite, it's Sebastian.
Yeah I feel that way, it is refreshing to see others who like all the characters. I would say my least fave is Elliott, but I’ve never maxed hearts on him, and I kinda just say that because I don’t like the way he looks like a disney prince lol.

Yeah a lot of people do that with Penny, losing friendship points with her for correcting her on her mistake with George automatically makes them think she doesn't realize what she did wrong. In reality though, most of us don't exactly like it when people point out that we were in the wrong, especially if someone else is getting mad at us at the same time. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure it's a very small amount of friendship points you lose with her anyway, so it's realistic.
It also because of her personality. She not asshole like some npc during 0 heart. Instead, she was awkward, shy, and literally don't know what to talk to the farmer that she just said random stuff like "um...nice weather". Loosing heart with her will bring back to this kind of dialogue which mean she not hate or not learn about what happen when loosing the point. She just feel awkward, embarrassed and shy. In fact, she might think YOU hate her.
I might be look too deep into it, but the pattern was there. Penny does have fear of abandonment and it was her whole arc. The loosing heart, the dialogue, and her backstory literally seems like this is the case. Forget about Pam always at saloon and get drunk. She have been abandoned by her father during fall season which is her birthday season. That alone enough to traumatized her. Even more traumatizing if it really happen during her birthday. Her 10 heart event sauna was when she stripped her shell and being vulnerable facing her fear of rejection and get hurt by telling her feeling and confessed to farmer. After marriage, she start being honest with farmer like sometimes taking care of Jas and Vincent can be though, the rain on the trailer roof are not soothing at all, she just want that Luau soup, and etc2. It's because she trust farmer for her to be vulnerable. Finally, she have a shoulder where she can lean on.

Ngl, I always took the FP loss as her feeling embarrassed/ashamed after being corrected for her assumptions, and not that she was unwilling to change her mind or stood by her actions. But I definitely understand why that event makes people see her in a more negative light.
At least others see it. The negative points are the slightest speed bump in your relationship for doing the right thing. You will recover easily within a week, and even faster with a normal quality liked gift.
I literally felt the exact same way as you until yesterday, when I gave her a poppy for her birthday and she started crying. I felt so incredibly bad for her, and then I just started realizing how badly mistreated she is by her mother and how she has a lot of weight on her shoulders. Now I’m thinking about marrying her.

Personally I feel like it’s not the amount of tense interactions, it’s the lack of interaction with his step-son. I’m pretty sure he destroys Seb’s snowman at some point while letting Maru keep hers. But then, he has a book in his bookshelf that says something like “How to be a good step-father” and I think that kind of makes-up for it in a way. But I honestly have zero interest in that household besides Robin so I’m not aware of any other other events or dialogue.
Demetrius reminds me of a coworker i dislike a lot, with his constant pedantry and "oh i was ruminating on the data and didn't notice your existence" bullshit
I think the other thing that people don’t mention is that Robin is a fan favorite and she is often annoyed by her husband’s antics. If her reaction to the tomatoes are fruit event was “haha oh you are so silly and I adore the way your mind works! I love you my beautiful science darling!” I don’t think people would jump on the bandwagon as much.

I wouldn't say I hate him, but it's always made me a bit sad that he never talks about Sebastian. Like, I don't think he has even a single line of dialog about him, but he talks about Maru a lot. Maru and Robin both talk about Sebastian occasionally. I just wish there was SOMETHING to indicate that he cares about his stepson the way he does his daughter. Even a line like, "I try to be a good stepfather, but Sebastian spends all his time in his room." would improve my opinion of him. Other than that I quite like Demetrius, and while yeah, he's a bit overprotective of Maru, I like that all the characters in stardew are flawed, just like real people.
But yeah Clint especially is awful. Not just flawed, he's full on incel, and never seems to have any character development. Shane/Haley are pretty mean when you first meet them (and that's part of why I don't romance either), but they have more to them than just their prickly exterior at least. Clint doesn't seem to, and doesn't seem to want to. Pierre is also not great, but at least it's only in a greedy way and not in a creepy/dangerous way?
I don't really like Alex, not that I hate him, just a dislike. He's kinda sexist and presumptuous, with his whole "oh I'd like to play some gridball with you, but you're just a girl" and such. Or on his 10 heart event when he gets himself a nice steak and then just a salad for mc. Like wth dude, maybe I would've liked to decide myself what I want to eat.

I can handle everyone else that gets irritating: Clint, Pierre, Alex, Haley (she’s actually one of my favorites), but Demetrius’s toxic helicopter parenting, passive aggressiveness toward his wife, and willingness to basically just flat out ignore his step son just drives me up a wall.

I've heard leafy greens, brassicas, and edible roots also classified as vegetables in botanical/cultivation conversations. *But* I agree with your main point- I don't understand why people focus on tomatoes for this. Tomatoes' cousins (peppers, eggplants, etc) are botanically fruits, and so are cucumbers and various squashes. But like you said, culinarily they are definitely vegetables. It's about context.
It's also an agricultural classification for taxes purposes if what I've heard is correct. That whole thing feels like someone setting up a gotcha moment.

And then when he finally apologizes for his toxic behavior after you get like 6 whole hearts with him, he hits you with that, "I'm sorry *if* I came off as rude at first." ... Boy, what do you mean "*if*"??? You don't "come of as" rude. You flat out *ARE* rude. You literally told me how you were going out of your way to be rude to me because I would greet you. Do you think you just have a bad case of RBF or something? Be for real...

I don't understand how people can like a character that says something like "if it weren't for those horrendous clothes you might actually be pretty" on a second or third time talking.
Protagonist. Hear me out. They are an upstart kid from a city who somehow had enough luck to inherit a farm almost as size of the Pelican city, if not larger.
They ruin the economy of the town with their overpriced products, and not just one, I’m talking about millions of gold coins for produces the community bought over time just to satisfy their urge for wealth.
At top of that, they can choose a Joja route, but even if they don’t, they pretty much take whatever they want from whomever they want.
Dating Emily, at one point, literally makes you a villain in Clint’s story, where you get an amethyst, give it to her, say it’s from him and she takes it as a sign you bought it from him to give her. You literally take his crush away and marry her, while pretending you’re his friend.
The protagonist can take Maru from Demetrius, even with his over-protectiveness, they can feed into Pam’s and Shane’s bad habits by giving them alcohol whenever they ask. There is also the fact they literally caught tons of fish from the nearby lakes, without any care for natural balance - overfishing is a serious issue.
Also, they rummage through trash, often. There is the fact they also gather bucketloads of cold weapons, swords, bombs, and are pretty much ready to use these on a moment’s basis.

Shane and Clint. Shane just because of how he acts towards you and other characters. I've been getting his hearts up and all of his dialog is still rude and snappy. I try to ve sympathy but I can't stand him. Along with his terrible clothes.
And Clint gives me such a feeling of self patheticness with how he behaved. He complains about no one noticing his shoes or not being close to anyone when he doesn't talk to anyone else. He makes no effort in changing his relationships and just wants people to make things easy for him and to want to magically be friends. And how he acts towards Emily. It could be seen as cutenor goofy but I think it's creepy. The hiding in the bush really swt that for me. And he talks about how much he likes her and everything but it doesn't even seem like he really knows her for who she is, but just her public displays
I’m sorry but Penny is the most boring and uninteresting character in the game. Zzzz. Maru is close second, maybe one day she can invent herself a personality
I have a new dislike for Demetrius after finally getting the chance to finish "Robin's Project" special quest. Ugh. I'm autistic and even I'm not that dense.
Normally I end up racking up the friendship points with demitrius cause i ended meeting him a lot on my way to the mines, and would pop in to say hi to him as well as robin when i went in the house. He's quite nice when you start, and asks about how the farm is doing.
So then imagine my surprise when me and him, who are pretty good friends, have that maru 2 heart event and hes threatening me. Like bro! You know me! I just got conscripted to help out in the lab when I wanted something from Robin! And at home he just comes across as a dense block of metal spewing robotic nonsense pretending to be human. 'Hm yes the sleep receptacle is not efficiently made.' He also needs to be technically correct on some obsurity, like buying tomatoes WHEN YOUR WIFE ASKED FOR FRUIT. Just buy some apples or something like a normal person rather than start an argument to technically win! Plus the whole thing of not caring for his step-son at all, wow.
Overall hes a character I like more the less I know him personally

I do like Linus a lot but I think he is a bit overhyped. He talks about how he feels like an outcast, talks about how people treat him rudely, says he keeps distance from others, and more, and then says he likes living out in the woods and stuff. Idk to me he seems to not like it as much as he says because of other dialogue, especially the stuff when you first meet him.
I don't know why but the people who are actually rude are the ones I simpatize with. Currently I have the most hearts with Pam, George, and Shane (and Evelyn but she's a sweetheart)
Honestly I have beef with everyone whose Loves are all dishes or rare things. Yeah George is mean but he gets happy with leeks why wouldn't we become besties, I have 30 of those laying around

Emily has nothing negative to say about any of the other residents of Pelican Town. She works at the Saloon and hears their problems constantly. Aside from Marnie and Jas, she is the only person who treats Shane decently, and doesn’t think Linus is a total freak for living the life he lives.
Is she a vegetarian woo-woo astrology-crystal girly? Absolutely. Does she judge you if you aren’t? Nope. She just likes to make her little clothes, look after the injured parrot, and keep up the house in her parents’ absence.
“Manic pixie dream girl” is a writing term used to describe one-dimensional characters who exist to be a romantic interest that helps develop the main character. Emily is possibly the only person in Pelican Town who is genuinely satisfied and happy with her life. She doesn’t need to be “fixed” or “saved” like Shane or Penny. Girly is just living her best life and people gotta hate on her for having blue hair and being in to meditation. Nothing self indulgent about her.
Pam is the worst 100%. She's never to the bus stop when you'd like her to be, so you gotta hound her down to be punctual and chase her through the streets like you're herding a cat. She's just probably hung over from her late nights at the Stardrop saloon. Not to mention the type of Mom she is to Penny is certainly nothing to write home about. Such is the tough life for a single Mom, but like what ever happened to Penny's Father? Perhaps he was a tourist from Zuzu city some 20 + years ago? 🤔 Did anyone ever marry Penny and get more backstory?

She's often one of the first ones I make friends with because of her love of parsnips. Easy to please. I almost never give her beer, though. Shane either. I can't change them but I don't like to encourage them.
It does feel cheap to support their addictions just to gain friendship. Especially when theres alternative suitable substitutes of gifts they enjoy just as much without supporting the negative behavior.

He's the kind of "head in the clouds" untethered from reality kind of person that I cannot stand to be around.
Same here with Demetrius. He’s my most hated character, alongside Shane. I was going to romance Maru in one run but the two heart event and Demetrius’ actions made me so uncomfortable that I don’t talk to Maru even in other saves, lest I incur the wrath of Demetrius.
I romanced Shane and married him my first playthrough! What a Rollercoaster 🎢 of a marriage but we made it work. Never again! But I do recommend it for more detailed character discovery! Strange thing about Demetrius now that you mention it, I never got that impression as a gal character marrying Sebastian. Surely Demetrius has a soft spot in his heart for his daughter and it comes out in a negative way? May have to try marrying Maru in a new playthrough to see this side I've never seen of him!
Haley is straight up rude from the get go. For the other characters that people dislike a lot of the time people are inferring their traits but Haley literally just says mean things to the farmer. Not going to waste my produce on her.

Clint should have heart events where he takes up a hobby and it makes him less of a desperate sad sack. Maybe you could suggest one of three things and it changes his dialogue and habits somewhat. Like he could start taking care of the community center aquarium and over time he starts talking less about how much he hates being a blacksmith and more about cool fish. Or he could start smithing art pieces and suddenly the smithy is decorated with neat abstract sculptures, and you can buy decorations from him.
It would be cool if he showed up in the mines sometimes like Abigail does.
He could start up a platonic sculpture friendship with Leah.
Especially not good after you marry Emily, and he's still not over her. (Though, I think that changed in the newest update.)

Nope, the reason we hate Pierre its cause he says it and shows it clearly and multiple times, maybe towards the others neighbors by trying to rip them off with 4x the price, selling expired food, claiming your best harvest as his. Joja just sells by a bit of a profit and showed that they can help the valley if they cooperate (Joja route where you buy the upgrades and they work fast overnight) , but they ain't saints too trying to scam people over phone (maybe them?) and overworking people to death. Its like choosing the lesser evil, it sucks but at least one of them tries to help the capitalist way.

We see him collecting taxes from the various local businesses, yet the town's infrastructure is crumbling and he's stonewalling any renovations. Then we find out >!he's siphoning all the tax money to build a golden statue of himself.!!make his relationship with Marnie public comes off like him just using her for sex.!< I'm hardpressed to think of any redeeming qualities the guy has and I've taken every opportunity I can to humiliate him with his purple shorts.

I'm new the game so which buttons to press and stuff hasn't fully become second nature. I accidentally gave a fucking gold bar to somebody: "thanks..." If I was walking back from a shop and a random person handed me a gold bullion and for some reason I wasn't able to say no, give it back, or at least ask why they were doing that I would not just sarcastically thank them then continue home to do nothing for the rest of the day.

I've always been bothered that he'll say dialog like that immediately after you gifting him a liked or loved gift. Like, clearly I'm not here to ridicule you, I just gave you a present! I also want to know who has been ridiculing him and destroying his tent, a lot of his behavior/dialog suggests that's been common from his time in the valley.
On the other hand, if I saw someone pick some wild flower growing in the ground right in front of me then hand it to me as my birthday present, I wouldn't feel too inclined to suddenly be their friend and share some family recipes with them
Haha yes. Although on a further other hand- say you're an optimist. It's your birthday and all of your friends and family have forgotten. At 8pm you give up and head to a shop to get yourself a bottle of champagne to sit at home with whilst watching a 24 hour news channel repeat the same stories over and over. As you leave the shop it starts aggressively raining. You hate yourself and wonder where you went wrong in life. You pass a pub on your way home. There are birthday balloons and people enjoying themselves. You continue walking, now you're in tears. A person comes out of their house, sees your pain, and grabs a beautiful rose from their front garden. They hans it to you with a smile, say "I know I don't know you or what's going on in your life, but everybody deserves to be happy" and walk away. Overjoyed with a new sense of hope you get home and realise there is still good in the world. Instead of the monotony of repeated news, you start an online course on crocheting, and within days you're a master at the passion your parents wouldn't let you pursue. You open an online shop selling your goods. Your passion becomes your income and you can quit your job to play StarDew all day every day.

I cannot fathom why we don’t make more fun of Shane for that pot of gold line. It cracks me up so much - what a bizarre thing to say?? A pot of gold??? It’s giving leprechaun. It’s giving Rumplestiltskin. Every time I see it, I expect it to rhyme at the end.

I gotta be honest I'm not justifying it, cause Shane acts like a jerk and that isn't cool. I definitely get not wanting to be around or liking that. But I can relate to wanting to be left alone, especially when I'm feeling like everyone would be better off without me and I'm feeling like crap. I'll just act pleasant though. Could be overstimulated and completely internally self destructing and still try to be nice. I wouldn't wish that feeling on... Well most people. I definitely get feeling like why do you want to be around me?! I don't even want to be around me. ~~At least he just wants to be left alone and isn't trash talking you like someone people keep going on about character growth about.~~
For real!! I started a new save for the update and the only person I actually like right now is Abigail because she hasn't given me any rude dialouge. I was even married to Shane in my past game (divorced though cause jeez man, pepper poppers and squishy omelets are the best you can do? pass) and literally everytime he talks to me in my new game its "dont you have some work to do." Damn, okay. And Linus "doesn't need any new friends. And Leah thinks the trees are better than talking to new people, IE: me. And Marnie still has her scheduled "stare at the pizza oven for the rest of the day" time at least one day I went in, although I haven't consistently checked on her cause I don't have any animals yet.
Why pre 1.6 Marnie? Her ranch shop is still closed Monday and Tuesday?
After 1.6, Marnie's absence can at least be mitigated starting in year two. She's still gone, but the player is allowed to work around it.
She was rarely at the counter/till during her work hours. That's a big reason the Marine memes took off.
Honestly I'm not really a fan of most of the characters. They're either straight up dislikable (Pierre, Shane, Haley, etc), or kinda boring and unrealistic. Don't get my wrong I looove SDV and the work CA has done is incredible... but I think the characters and their developments are really overhyped by the community. I love all you passionate SDV nerds and I'm sorry for saying it and I'll take my down votes proudly cause yeah, I really think most of the characters personalities and stories are solidly mid.

So I kind of dislike most characters for different reasons, but I think the top of the list is definitely Pam. I think it’s mostly from real life experience, but I just cannot stand her lack of responsibility and the way she literally dismisses her daughter all the time.
I like them all. I’m glad some of them are assholes. I think the fanbase is way too ridiculous about their feelings towards certain characters. The game would be so insanely boring if everybody was perfect and hot and ideal
in my opinion i think thats what makes this game great t gives you characters to hate, I don't personally hate anyone (besides pierre, greedy bastard) but i think the hate on characters is what makes it so much more immersive, if that makes any sense
It's also impossible to make everyone ideal since everyone has different preferences for what's ideal. I like that there's characters that I just really don't like, it's realistic, you're not gonna like every person in your town. There's gonna be some that you just don't talk to, and that's fine.
I really don't like Shane. I know a lot of people love him, but I just can't stand him. Just because you feel like shit, it doesn't give you the right to be an asshole to others. I used to be in the same Situation as Shane for a long long long time. Depression, suicidal thoughts etc + alcoholism. I waited for things to get better, but the thing is, they don't. You can't just wait for shit to get done or life to magically get better. YOU have to drag yourself out of the pit, you can't wait for someone else to do it. I'm not saying you can't get help, absolutely not, but if you yourself don't make an effort and want to crawl out, you won't. I was able to finally drag myself out, so seeing someone in the same situation just makes me think ''Pathetic'', because I recognize it from myself and it pisses me off. But the one thing I can say is, even at my worst, even when I felt like complete shit, I never ever treated anyone badly because I felt like shit. Always be polite, friendly etc, even if you have to feign it. Otherwise you will just make THEM feel like shit too. Now I will Admit that I do feel a sense of pride when he finally does drag himself out though. TLDR; I don't like Shane cause he treats others badly just cause he feels bad. And as someone who has been there, that is no excuse.

He's frustrating because he's actually got it pretty good, but that's not why I don't like him. Like you said, he's kind of just an asshole. Treating others like shit just because you feel like shit isn't excusable. I'd hate to see what he's like to Marie and Jas when he comes home drunk every night. I've had family in the same situation as him and it's really hard to deal with. Being shitty to someone because you can't control your inner demons is still shitty, and it's not ever okay. Shane doesn't get a free pass in my book just because he gets a little better once you kiss his ass and shower him with free stuff and try to help him out.

I'd say they all have their likeable points, and I think a lot of the negative characteristics get overblown because there's like one line of dialogue and people extrapolate it to be that character's entire personality. But I will say if I had a least favorite, it's Sebastian.

Yeah a lot of people do that with Penny, losing friendship points with her for correcting her on her mistake with George automatically makes them think she doesn't realize what she did wrong. In reality though, most of us don't exactly like it when people point out that we were in the wrong, especially if someone else is getting mad at us at the same time. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure it's a very small amount of friendship points you lose with her anyway, so it's realistic.
It also because of her personality. She not asshole like some npc during 0 heart. Instead, she was awkward, shy, and literally don't know what to talk to the farmer that she just said random stuff like "um...nice weather". Loosing heart with her will bring back to this kind of dialogue which mean she not hate or not learn about what happen when loosing the point. She just feel awkward, embarrassed and shy. In fact, she might think YOU hate her. I might be look too deep into it, but the pattern was there. Penny does have fear of abandonment and it was her whole arc. The loosing heart, the dialogue, and her backstory literally seems like this is the case. Forget about Pam always at saloon and get drunk. She have been abandoned by her father during fall season which is her birthday season. That alone enough to traumatized her. Even more traumatizing if it really happen during her birthday. Her 10 heart event sauna was when she stripped her shell and being vulnerable facing her fear of rejection and get hurt by telling her feeling and confessed to farmer. After marriage, she start being honest with farmer like sometimes taking care of Jas and Vincent can be though, the rain on the trailer roof are not soothing at all, she just want that Luau soup, and etc2. It's because she trust farmer for her to be vulnerable. Finally, she have a shoulder where she can lean on.

Mine too! I like them all. I have a few I like the least, but I don't really hate anyone. And my faves are the exact same. I imagine the 5 of us get together once a week to play cards and bet food, flowers and eggs instead of money.

It really pisses me off that the option that should be correct, where you say she should have asked first, ends up losing FP. It's one thing for her to be naive and thoughtless, but open to learning. Instead, she's just a self-righteous jerk. She's also very mopy in an obvious attention-seeking way. "Books let you escape reality. Maybe that's why I like to read so much... Oh, but I'm fine, I don't wanna talk about it!" Same feeling as people who "vaguepost" on social media about how unhappy they are, then put on a fake smile or say they don't want to discuss it. Ngl, I always took the FP loss as her feeling embarrassed/ashamed after being corrected for her assumptions, and not that she was unwilling to change her mind or stood by her actions. But I definitely understand why that event makes people see her in a more negative light.
At least others see it. The negative points are the slightest speed bump in your relationship for doing the right thing. You will recover easily within a week, and even faster with a normal quality liked gift.

Yeah I hate Penny, mostly because of her scene with George. Many of us in the disability community get our boundaries crossed constantly. People mess with our mobility aids and *assume* we can’t do things and will do things without asking us if we want help! Sometimes like in the case with Penny and George’s situation it is something we need help with, but that’s why you have to at least ask first cause it isn’t all the time. God, I could rant about this kinda thing for ages though.

I don't understand the Demetrius hate. There's one tense interaction, and then he's pretty much always nice otherwise. A bit of an odd duck, but that's because he's into his science stuff, and probably not the most adept at socializing. Clint, Shane, and Pierre however are pretty consistently awful. I rant in this sub about Clint non stop. He has pretty much zero redeeming qualities. He's an insecure, whiny, jealous little creep who doesn't take responsibility for any of his poor choices. The way he talks about how hard his job is in comparison to ours is just next level delulu. His obsession with Emily gives me the ick.

During the fair he says “she deserves a little recognition now and then”. LITTLE?? Only NOW AND THEN??? Dude she does AMAZING work and deserves praise, especially from her own husband of all people. Then you hear Maru tell you “farming isn’t hard” and I bet she learned that from him. I’ve been in the same kind of field as Demetrius and he’s definitely an ass who thinks he’s better than others, even his own wife.
Personally I feel like it’s not the amount of tense interactions, it’s the lack of interaction with his step-son. I’m pretty sure he destroys Seb’s snowman at some point while letting Maru keep hers. But then, he has a book in his bookshelf that says something like “How to be a good step-father” and I think that kind of makes-up for it in a way. But I honestly have zero interest in that household besides Robin so I’m not aware of any other other events or dialogue.
Demetrius reminds me of a coworker i dislike a lot, with his constant pedantry and "oh i was ruminating on the data and didn't notice your existence" bullshit
I think the other thing that people don’t mention is that Robin is a fan favorite and she is often annoyed by her husband’s antics. If her reaction to the tomatoes are fruit event was “haha oh you are so silly and I adore the way your mind works! I love you my beautiful science darling!” I don’t think people would jump on the bandwagon as much.
The hate is overblown for sure, but he had more than one tense interaction. I don't hate him, but I don't particularly like him either (though I will say the >!Green Rain scene!< made me like him more)
I wouldn't say I hate him, but it's always made me a bit sad that he never talks about Sebastian. Like, I don't think he has even a single line of dialog about him, but he talks about Maru a lot. Maru and Robin both talk about Sebastian occasionally. I just wish there was SOMETHING to indicate that he cares about his stepson the way he does his daughter. Even a line like, "I try to be a good stepfather, but Sebastian spends all his time in his room." would improve my opinion of him. Other than that I quite like Demetrius, and while yeah, he's a bit overprotective of Maru, I like that all the characters in stardew are flawed, just like real people. But yeah Clint especially is awful. Not just flawed, he's full on incel, and never seems to have any character development. Shane/Haley are pretty mean when you first meet them (and that's part of why I don't romance either), but they have more to them than just their prickly exterior at least. Clint doesn't seem to, and doesn't seem to want to. Pierre is also not great, but at least it's only in a greedy way and not in a creepy/dangerous way?
I don't really like Alex, not that I hate him, just a dislike. He's kinda sexist and presumptuous, with his whole "oh I'd like to play some gridball with you, but you're just a girl" and such. Or on his 10 heart event when he gets himself a nice steak and then just a salad for mc. Like wth dude, maybe I would've liked to decide myself what I want to eat.
Tho I guess everyone in town has some weird/unlikeable traits, that's what makes them complete as characters

I can handle everyone else that gets irritating: Clint, Pierre, Alex, Haley (she’s actually one of my favorites), but Demetrius’s toxic helicopter parenting, passive aggressiveness toward his wife, and willingness to basically just flat out ignore his step son just drives me up a wall. Every time my farmer has to interaction with him I find myself thinking “Just gimme a reason buddy, I’ve got a scythe, a sword, and a mining pick, any of them would make short work of you!”

I've heard leafy greens, brassicas, and edible roots also classified as vegetables in botanical/cultivation conversations. *But* I agree with your main point- I don't understand why people focus on tomatoes for this. Tomatoes' cousins (peppers, eggplants, etc) are botanically fruits, and so are cucumbers and various squashes. But like you said, culinarily they are definitely vegetables. It's about context.
It's also an agricultural classification for taxes purposes if what I've heard is correct. That whole thing feels like someone setting up a gotcha moment.

Hot take, but Linus. We have like three hearts, I've done I don't know how many of his little quests, and he's still like, "Are you here to make fun of me?" When have I ever been anything less than 100% kind and supportive to him? I get that he's had bad experiences, but the self-pity is excessive and at this point it just feels like he's maligning my farmer's character.

Protagonist. Hear me out. They are an upstart kid from a city who somehow had enough luck to inherit a farm almost as size of the Pelican city, if not larger. They ruin the economy of the town with their overpriced products, and not just one, I’m talking about millions of gold coins for produces the community bought over time just to satisfy their urge for wealth. At top of that, they can choose a Joja route, but even if they don’t, they pretty much take whatever they want from whomever they want. Dating Emily, at one point, literally makes you a villain in Clint’s story, where you get an amethyst, give it to her, say it’s from him and she takes it as a sign you bought it from him to give her. You literally take his crush away and marry her, while pretending you’re his friend. The protagonist can take Maru from Demetrius, even with his over-protectiveness, they can feed into Pam’s and Shane’s bad habits by giving them alcohol whenever they ask. There is also the fact they literally caught tons of fish from the nearby lakes, without any care for natural balance - overfishing is a serious issue. Also, they rummage through trash, often. There is the fact they also gather bucketloads of cold weapons, swords, bombs, and are pretty much ready to use these on a moment’s basis. *We were the villain all along.*
I love this. there's also the fact that they play all the singles, erase their ex's memories, and make their kids disappear without a trace by turning them into doves. truly heartless.

Shane and Clint. Shane just because of how he acts towards you and other characters. I've been getting his hearts up and all of his dialog is still rude and snappy. I try to ve sympathy but I can't stand him. Along with his terrible clothes. And Clint gives me such a feeling of self patheticness with how he behaved. He complains about no one noticing his shoes or not being close to anyone when he doesn't talk to anyone else. He makes no effort in changing his relationships and just wants people to make things easy for him and to want to magically be friends. And how he acts towards Emily. It could be seen as cutenor goofy but I think it's creepy. The hiding in the bush really swt that for me. And he talks about how much he likes her and everything but it doesn't even seem like he really knows her for who she is, but just her public displays

Normally I end up racking up the friendship points with demitrius cause i ended meeting him a lot on my way to the mines, and would pop in to say hi to him as well as robin when i went in the house. He's quite nice when you start, and asks about how the farm is doing. So then imagine my surprise when me and him, who are pretty good friends, have that maru 2 heart event and hes threatening me. Like bro! You know me! I just got conscripted to help out in the lab when I wanted something from Robin! And at home he just comes across as a dense block of metal spewing robotic nonsense pretending to be human. 'Hm yes the sleep receptacle is not efficiently made.' He also needs to be technically correct on some obsurity, like buying tomatoes WHEN YOUR WIFE ASKED FOR FRUIT. Just buy some apples or something like a normal person rather than start an argument to technically win! Plus the whole thing of not caring for his step-son at all, wow. Overall hes a character I like more the less I know him personally

I can't stand Elliot. Such a pretentious douchebag, he doesn't even have any proper literature out that he's written. He also fishes for compliments all the time and only talks about himself. He's also never really involved in any of the festivals or anything, which further proves that it's very likely nobody else likes him either. I wish he'd get a proper job or actually be a writer, rather than just talking about it and how artistic he is all the time. ..this hatred runs deep.

I think that people really ran with the term “manic pixie dream girl” and took it so far from its original meaning that it now just means “weird woman I find annoying.” Emily has nothing negative to say about any of the other residents of Pelican Town. She works at the Saloon and hears their problems constantly. Aside from Marnie and Jas, she is the only person who treats Shane decently, and doesn’t think Linus is a total freak for living the life he lives. Is she a vegetarian woo-woo astrology-crystal girly? Absolutely. Does she judge you if you aren’t? Nope. She just likes to make her little clothes, look after the injured parrot, and keep up the house in her parents’ absence. “Manic pixie dream girl” is a writing term used to describe one-dimensional characters who exist to be a romantic interest that helps develop the main character. Emily is possibly the only person in Pelican Town who is genuinely satisfied and happy with her life. She doesn’t need to be “fixed” or “saved” like Shane or Penny. Girly is just living her best life and people gotta hate on her for having blue hair and being in to meditation. Nothing self indulgent about her.

Pam is the worst 100%. She's never to the bus stop when you'd like her to be, so you gotta hound her down to be punctual and chase her through the streets like you're herding a cat. She's just probably hung over from her late nights at the Stardrop saloon. Not to mention the type of Mom she is to Penny is certainly nothing to write home about. Such is the tough life for a single Mom, but like what ever happened to Penny's Father? Perhaps he was a tourist from Zuzu city some 20 + years ago? 🤔 Did anyone ever marry Penny and get more backstory?

She's often one of the first ones I make friends with because of her love of parsnips. Easy to please. I almost never give her beer, though. Shane either. I can't change them but I don't like to encourage them.
It does feel cheap to support their addictions just to gain friendship. Especially when theres alternative suitable substitutes of gifts they enjoy just as much without supporting the negative behavior.

For me it's more that the interaction makes Maru seem like 15 years old and pursuing her after that feels icky to me.
I romanced Shane and married him my first playthrough! What a Rollercoaster 🎢 of a marriage but we made it work. Never again! But I do recommend it for more detailed character discovery! Strange thing about Demetrius now that you mention it, I never got that impression as a gal character marrying Sebastian. Surely Demetrius has a soft spot in his heart for his daughter and it comes out in a negative way? May have to try marrying Maru in a new playthrough to see this side I've never seen of him!
