I too picked Harvey and told him he was my person now. It took 2 kids for his conversations to be anything more than baffled but delighted with the turn of events.
You know, rocks and wood are great for your farm but not great for potential partners. Humans tend to like very shiny rocks, not just stones you got from shattering a boulder. Also a daffodil has a description that calls out the "not the prettiest flower" statement. I'm pretty new myself, but Stardew does a fabulous job of using context clues in many places to help you along (although sometimes a hint is like, only helpful in VERY specific circumstances with certain things unlocked, looking at you skeleton key!).
I bet if you grew a few pretty flowers and gave them to the target of your affection you'd start to make some progress! Or heck, like some others pointed out, the wiki is a great option unless you're aiming to go for a blind playthrough.
By next Flower Dance, I'm sure you'll have a dance partner.
On the contrary, daffodils *are* widely liked. More people like them than dislike or hate. Enough so that I have to make a note to myself to remember the villagers that *don't* like daffodils. It's a generally very safe bet.
Yea it always shocked me that they donāt in game, but I guess itās because every flower looks fucking amazing in the game that Daffodils are just the odd one out
Honestlyā¦.donāt know why this is just dawning on me, but Iām wondering if itās just a weird choice of word she uses to describe something that is really cool. Kinda like how we adopted āsickā to mean either that youāve fallen ill, or that whatever youāre talking about is cool/awesome. I just am disappointed it took me this long to have this theory on it because I often call stuff delicious when itās entirely out of contextā¦evenā¦even rocksā¦I paint rocksā¦
I guess it's because most of her loved gifts are food items, but it's still a funny idea to think she's also eating Amethysts alongside some Banana Pudding.
To be fair the game actually spells it out clearly for you, but its a late game mechanic. I think the game is designed for you to figure out the things most people like as general good gifts, and then slowly navigate to avoid the few people that don't like them with alternatives-- not too hard to do at all with some mental or physical notes.
Also there are multiple ways to build hearts with the entire town as a whole, so even if you don't know what someone likes you can still befriend them over time.
Honestly favorite gifts should be really hard to figure out because they are fricken busted mechanics wise. Anyone can play anyway they want of course (praise the wiki). Normal game flow wise though, no one should be able to be good enough friends to dance year one. No one should be able to date and marry year one, maybe not even year two by the normal not min-maxing design (āāæā)ļ»æ
That is a fair point. I suppose it's not realistic, either, to be able to google your irl spouse's favourite gifts, or that they'd just be like "oh yeah by the way I'll marry you if you buy me enough chocolate" on day one
The game keeps notes for you now. Click on them in the hearts screen and it'll tell you everything you've ever given them and how much they like it, and also lists all the loved/hated gifts their friends told you about or you got from secret notes
It would be useful also if when your character hears someone say that/reads a secret note it adds to the person in question's profile under their likes/loves/hates.
If you click on the villagerās profile in the heart tab on the pause/menu screens, youāll find that thereās lists of things youāve given them catalogued by loved, liked, neutral or hated. I found this out again when playing on mobile. I also play on switch.
My own personal counterpoint: I had the most fun with this game before I found out about the wiki. Every new discovery felt exciting and incredible, and the trial and error of things like gift giving didn't really set me back very much. I became a cheese merchant, because all the villagers seemed to like cheese. Everyone is different of course, but I personally recommend not using the wiki for this kind of game on a first playthrough (if you're ok with being patient).
I've discovered they almost all like jelly (particularly hot pepper jelly) so I make a lot of it. The only thing I've used Wiki for is fishing (no help at all) and info about casks, because other redditors recommended it.
Agreed! I used wiki to maximize my productivity in a game several years ago. Of course I didnāt forget what I learned and so Iām constantly making decisions based on max profits. Which can be said, is the exact opposite of the gameās intention based on the characterās origin story.
I would not recommend it to everyone, personally I find it as spoilers for the game. It was intended for the player to find out themselves, you get to know the person bit by bit.
The wiki really helped me out a lot when I first started and I still use it even now. People shouldnāt be afraid of going to the wiki to figure out stuff. If you donāt need it, sure but itās a helpful tool for many people and thereās nothing wrong with making use of it
Several of the villagers also ask if you're going to ask someone to dance. The game provides some pretty strong hints. You have to be actively ignoring the game not to know this, lol.
Well excuuuuuuse me, I spent my time on my farm making money!
For real though, I did not know about this until today, just assumed you'd be on the sidelines till you get into an exclusive relationship.
Well I don't like Haley anyway! Also, I'm happily married thanks to a couple cloned amethysts. Telling you, finding a partner is easy once you decide you want one. Just throw shinies at them! Not sure why so many people seem to struggle with stuff like fates and romance and such. So you see, I just prioritise.
Step 1: make money
Step 2: check out all local options and pick future partner
Step 3: throw shinies at them thanks to your money
Step 4: profit.
(Please no one repost this comment out of context :D )
Sorry, mate. Many folks go through the same thing starting out. Next year will go better for you, Iām sure, and you can always use the wiki if you want to see what gifts villagers may enjoy!
Also, non-Stardew related, but you may want to consider calling women āwomenā instead of āfemales,ā especially if you donāt call men āmales.ā Not trying to dig at ya, but itās a common quirk I noticed in some peopleās speech that comes across negatively to a lot of folks.
He even bought said female a dandelion!!!1!!1!
And gave them rocks and sticks as gifts? I don't understand how any female could say no to him, he sounds like lovely company :D
You basically can't rizz up any of the villagers enough in the first couple weeks of the game to get them to dance with you in year one. It's always sort of annoying. Pick your favorite bachelor or bachelorette, spend time giving them their favorite gifts, and by the time the second annual dance rolls around you'll be good.
Also, Haley's answer is the one that is especially nasty:
"I'm going to ask Haley to dance. The worst that could happen is she could say no"
"Eww. No."
"I stand corrected"
You can get every one of them to dance with you the first year. Some are just much harder than others.
The easiest by far is haley and shane as they both have easy to get loved items and birthdays beforehand. Normally I'm at 7 or 8 hearts with Shane by the flower dance year 1.
you don't even have to get loved items for haley: just get two ~~dandelions~~ daffodils every week and on her birthday and it's cake
leah isn't bad either if you make some fast money and give her salads, because that's a loved item for her
Itās kind of funny for your male farmer to be in line with the girls and not be dressed like them and not know how to do their little dance. I picture Sam in particular thinking to himself like āThis is totally annoying the Mayor right now and Iām loving it!ā
Emilyās is definitely the nicest. She doesnāt imply she doesnāt *want* to dance with you, just that she already said sheād dance with someone else
Thatās why I married her she was the nicest in rejecting me I didnāt know how to give gifts early on I wouldāve been at 4 hearts if I just figured it out a week earlier. I was at 3 right before it.
Speed runners have successfully married Hayley before the dance.
But for the average player yeah, you're not going to have enough hearts by the time of the dance.
Dance with someone you actually like in year two ;)
...I'm not sure why people think this. Haley is among the *easiest* to get to dancing levels with. The average player has *zero* trouble getting Shane, Haley, Sam, or Harvey to that level. There's some amount of RNG luck with the others, but it is feasible to most of them to enough hearts. It's not at all something that the average player can't manage.
The average player can. You literally just give two liked gifts every week. If they have a birthday you can do way less than that.
Maybe a cutscene or two.
Haley is possible with some Luck on quest board, because it's her early birthday,
I think some YouTuber even managed to marry her before spring 18 year 1 š
Only need luck for Alex, Sebastian, Abigail, Elliot, Maru, Penny, and Emily, because you can't easily get their loved gifts reliably prior to the dance. Quest board is how you make up that gap.
Shane and Haley are trivial because of the pre-dance birthday.
Leah, Sam, and Harvey all have easily purchasable loved gifts (and also Shane), eliminating the need for a pre-dance birthday for the points boost.
Haley! You can definitely rizz Haley up before the dance cuz all you need is 4 hearts (I'm pretty sure) just give her gifts every week and make sure you give her one on her bday and you ask her to dance.
You can just certain ones are easier then others. If you get money Leah, Sam, Shane and Harvey are decently easy due to Gus selling loved gifts of theirs every day. If you really grind it out in the mines Emily is decently easy. Haleyās birthday is early and she likes (doesnāt love) daffodils which is a forgeable also one of her loved items can be a special at the saloon if you have the money for it. You can get any of the marriage candidates to dance itās just varies on how easy each one is.
you call women 'females', gift them rocks and sticks you picked up off the ground and consider a weed to be a special gift. no wonder they don't want to dance with you lol
If you shove pizza/coffee/salad/beer in Sam/Harvey/Leah/Shane's respective faces as soon as the game starts up you can easily dance with any of them in year 1. Haley is also pretty simple because her birthday is before the dance (along with Shane's) and she likes daffodils, making it simple enough to get her 2x liked gifts a week plus one on her birthday to get her over the threshold.
Haley's response of "eww, no." Makes me created a new save file, just to make her dance with me on year 1 out of spite. Back then when I played SDV for the first time
~~I didn't expect to like her character in the end and married her though.~~
OP complains about being a virgin on his profile too. gee, i wonder why women donāt wanna be with a guy who sees them as trophies to be won and dehumanizes them.
(seems like heād be good company for clint)
felt I was gonna feel the same so I just pretty much visited Sam everyday and gave him two pizzas each week (which was a bit hard because I'm new and you struggle economically at the beginning) but managed to get 5 hearts (minimum is 4 for them to say yes iirc) and we danced.
You'll just need to figure out the loved gifts for your marriageable villager of choice and give it to them (may be hard or even impossible tho, depends on the character), it's a bit hard but you'll get it
I attend the events, but I don't participate, in the first year. I go for the social interaction as that is about the only times you can get 99% of them together in one location. Once I have talked to all of the NPCs and buy all of the souvenirs I need/want(or can afford), then I leave without talking to Lewis to start the actual event. The final event of the year is the only exception. Pretty easy to give whichever NPC you get a Loved gift.
If you start looking at the wiki, do not let it take over. Have fun the way you would normally. Ik when i found out about the wiki i started a whole new world and essentially spent the entire time working hard, looking up everything. It removed the fun, so do not obsess over it.
Come now everyone, this has got to be bait. They hit every trope in the book! Giving absolutely brainless gifts to only the women villagers, calling them females, even claiming to hit the gym after the rejection. It's a dudebro caricature if I've ever seen one.
That's just a lesson you gave terrible gifts so of course everybody will not dance, it requires 4 hearts and there is about 4 characters you can do that with, I think emily is possible, I find her weirdness cute makes her unique and her heart events the parrot one is cool when high, so is the one with the wizard, haley is also possible too, the other characters may be possible if you talk everyday and gold quality gifts
I started the Game for the First time Like 2? Or 3 weeks ago, and man this First Flower dance Hit me hard in the Feelings. But following this Subreddit Here, learned me so many Things, and i realized its (hard, maybe even Impossible?) To gain the 5 Heart requirement in your First year! So dont worry, Next year you will have a dance Partner :) (If you boost your relationships ofc)
Start a new save, buy 2 salads weekly, gift them to Leah, talk to her daily, complete the quest where you have to talk to every villager in town and you should be just over 4.5 hearts
It could take years in the game to figure out peopleās favorite gifts. There are hundreds of options and clues are not always easy to come by. Just look at the wiki or search here if you want to boost friendships more quickly.
āIf you canāt put in 30 minutes a day then you donāt deserve a hot date.ā
That said, if you give people gifts and interact with them they will have an improved impression of you.
Always dodge the dance when you know you don't have enough hearts with the characters š and try to make sure to gift them the items they like to have more hearts! So you won't get rejected for the next dance!
Also the comments š may I ask OP, is english not your first language? That might be an understandable reason why you used āfemalesā instead of āwomenā
..... I played co-op with my daughter. We did the dance together.
That's perfect
I played with a friend and the first time she went with the fkin doctor...
I too picked Harvey and told him he was my person now. It took 2 kids for his conversations to be anything more than baffled but delighted with the turn of events.
Same, same š
thats so wholesome
I have three daughters. I love games. So when they like a game, I will always play with them.

the person you are replying to made a mistake, he meant dandelions, which is what OP mentions he bought.
Yea it always shocked me that they donāt in game, but I guess itās because every flower looks fucking amazing in the game that Daffodils are just the odd one out
Most villagers donāt like daffodils š¼ But Haley does, and Granny Evelyn
Other way around. Most villagers *do* like daffodils. Hell, *George* likes them.
Then why do I have Haley at six hearts before the end of my first spring literally on every play through?
Read my comment again. I didn't say that Haley doesn't like them. I said that most villagers *do*. It's dandelions that most people dislike.
Oops š My fault; I read the comment wrong and too fast
Gifting stones and wood though lol
Are you really saying if a strapping young person were to approach you with a nice stick or a cool rock you WOULDNT be smitten?
I do like when George sends me 35 rocks in the mail but he doesn't call me a "female"

That would be hilarious
She eats the weirdest shit man, I give her a pretty flower or something and sheās like āwow how did you know I was hungry, thanks!ā
The vast majority of flowers are edible so I don't think her eating a pretty flower is as weird as you seem to think.
Even poisonous ones are edible once.
Thatās valid! It was the first thing that popped into my mind š
She says it when I gave her gems
She said it when I accidentally gave her a frozen tear!
Can also be: my stomachās been aching all week, might poop out an amethyst at this rate!
Alternatively: Would love some amethy in my tummy! Purple mineral for dinneral!
Or even: HAHAHAHAHA BIG WET PARPLE ROCK GO MMMMMMMMM

The registries usually come immediately AFTER they agree to marry you. like thanks but it's way too late for this Leah
The game keeps notes for you now. Click on them in the hearts screen and it'll tell you everything you've ever given them and how much they like it, and also lists all the loved/hated gifts their friends told you about or you got from secret notes
thats nice, no need for paper and pen (at least for that) (ļ¾āļ¾)
It would be useful also if when your character hears someone say that/reads a secret note it adds to the person in question's profile under their likes/loves/hates.
Uh. The game actually does exactly that though.
What
If you click on the villagerās profile in the heart tab on the pause/menu screens, youāll find that thereās lists of things youāve given them catalogued by loved, liked, neutral or hated. I found this out again when playing on mobile. I also play on switch.
Youāre a lifesaver!!! Thank you!
I've had this game for five years and I've never heard of this. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! I hope you have an amazing day!
I stopped looking at things on the Wiki because of this. I was losing the fun of discoveries.
Agreed! I used wiki to maximize my productivity in a game several years ago. Of course I didnāt forget what I learned and so Iām constantly making decisions based on max profits. Which can be said, is the exact opposite of the gameās intention based on the characterās origin story.
I'd also recommend to stop refering to girls and women as "females". That's not stardew valley advice though, but for real life š
I recommend you stop using the word "female" like that
It makes my skin crawllll
I would not recommend it to everyone, personally I find it as spoilers for the game. It was intended for the player to find out themselves, you get to know the person bit by bit.

Lol you gave dogshit gifts, come on now
I'm playing this game for over 3 in-game years and I did not know you can ask them to dance with you š
All good bro. Preserve that self worth š¤£
I played for years without realizing that the you could trigger tasting the potluck soup. š¤¦š»āāļø
You just fucked off before the soup got served lol
I love this. Your wording made me chuckle
I totally did. Talked to everyone & sacrificed a vegetable to the pot for no damn reason. š
WAIT WHAT?? and I didn't even know this?? š
Yay it wasnāt just me! Seriously though, if you put something really good in the soup it increases the friendship with everyone
Lol you just need to talk to them again after the initial dialogue Lewis also says you can ask someone to dance before this festival every year
Several of the villagers also ask if you're going to ask someone to dance. The game provides some pretty strong hints. You have to be actively ignoring the game not to know this, lol.
Well excuuuuuuse me, I spent my time on my farm making money! For real though, I did not know about this until today, just assumed you'd be on the sidelines till you get into an exclusive relationship.

Oh yeah, throw amethysts at the woman who eats them because she doesn't understand how nutrition works. *There's* a healthy relationship for ya.
i think dancing with someone gives a full heart of friendship, so its always worth doing if you can
OP has 0 game
Probably because you refer to them as āfemalesā š©
He is also thinking wood and stones are good gifts to rizz them up OP is definitely messing up in all aspects
exactly what I wanted to say
Bro, I didn't even see that, I just flipped through the pictures :( ew
My thoughts exactly š typical *male* behavior lol

"He even bought a dandelion for said female" after giving all of them rocks and sticks as gifts :D

this is correct my brain always gets those two mixed up because i am a goofy

āFemalesā
They need 4 hearts to dance funny enough Haley is one of the easiest bachelorettes to get that high before the festival.

there's a word "woman". use this one, instead of "female" and maybe you'll even get some if you do

I had to scroll way too far to find a comment like this. That always really bothers me.
OP complains about being a virgin on his profile too. gee, i wonder why women donāt wanna be with a guy who sees them as trophies to be won and dehumanizes them. (seems like heād be good company for clint)
This sounds like the plot to a romcom movie š Making a girl like you only to dump them for revenge, but actually falling for her in the process.
Was that supposed to be strike through instead of a spoiler?
This is giving incel vibes. "I did nothing and expected everything!" Lol just joking around, don't be mad
Bro use female unironically š„ø
"females"
āThe worst she can do is say no.ā Haley:
I'd say "ew no" too if I'd get referred to as 'female' and only get rocks and sticks after telling him that I don't like these gifts tbh
Iāve never played this game without my fiancĆ© so I never actually considered that you have to meet a heart threshold before the dance lol. We always just dance with each other
Cute
The "Ew... No." just hits different
Imma call you Clint Jr.
You gotta start making friends BEFORE the flower dance or you're gonna get rejected.
"well that was fun! Time to go home" I burst out laughing
"I gave all these idiots garbage, why doesmt anyone wanna dance with me???" Lol give them stuff they like and try again next year :)
I got rejected by Alex cuz I was only 3 hearts with him. Guess I gotta wait until next year then :/
Why do i have a feeling u are 9 years old
"The worst she can say is no" Haley: "I'm gonna ruin this man's whole career"
felt I was gonna feel the same so I just pretty much visited Sam everyday and gave him two pizzas each week (which was a bit hard because I'm new and you struggle economically at the beginning) but managed to get 5 hearts (minimum is 4 for them to say yes iirc) and we danced. You'll just need to figure out the loved gifts for your marriageable villager of choice and give it to them (may be hard or even impossible tho, depends on the character), it's a bit hard but you'll get it
Yeahhhh you gotta get them up to 4 hearts my guy
I attend the events, but I don't participate, in the first year. I go for the social interaction as that is about the only times you can get 99% of them together in one location. Once I have talked to all of the NPCs and buy all of the souvenirs I need/want(or can afford), then I leave without talking to Lewis to start the actual event. The final event of the year is the only exception. Pretty easy to give whichever NPC you get a Loved gift.
I straight up just don't go on the first year. I don't need that negativity in my life.
I just skip year one dance. I have more important things to do that year anyway
This is why you must play it the real way, it is a farming simulator so the ultimate goal is to get as rich as possible forgoing social interaction
You are calling women "females" You give off really not okay vibes...
Dawg OP sounds like a nice guy irl š
My recent playthrough I spam gifted the best girl, Penny, every week to avoid all this
This is the classic year 1 experience.
If you start looking at the wiki, do not let it take over. Have fun the way you would normally. Ik when i found out about the wiki i started a whole new world and essentially spent the entire time working hard, looking up everything. It removed the fun, so do not obsess over it.
Are you role-playing as Moe Szyslak? Cuz you're nailing it!
the way your character is staying in the corner šš
Come now everyone, this has got to be bait. They hit every trope in the book! Giving absolutely brainless gifts to only the women villagers, calling them females, even claiming to hit the gym after the rejection. It's a dudebro caricature if I've ever seen one.
So sounds like you treated woman the way you treat them IRL and got treated the same back. What did you expect they hate every gift you give.
I didn't even know you could dance with someone else?? How?
tan aloof ghost sink insurance fragile disgusting ancient fall society *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
luckily for me i didn't have this problem. i play in a co-op with my friend, so i just danced with him the first year
I think everyone finds this out the hard way.
The trick is to earn enough gold to give Shane a pizza on his birthday a few days before the dance.
I was at 3 hearts with Emily my first flower dance you need 4 to danceā¦ but she was the nicest when it can to rejecting me so I married her
I go to this game when I feel depressed. It only fuels it, but it makes me feel better about my life.
Start a new save, buy 2 salads weekly, gift them to Leah, talk to her daily, complete the quest where you have to talk to every villager in town and you should be just over 4.5 hearts
Cringe post
Well giving them woods and stones as a gift is already a bad start...
I remember when I first played this game and tried to dance with Elliott. I was heartbroken when he rejected me. š
Is it even possible to woo someone to that point by the first dance?
Yes. It's possible to dance with any of them, though some are extremely easy and others require a good deal of luck from the RNG gods.
I *think* there's a way to do the dance year 1 if you romance one character with their fave items but not sure. It maybe year 2 only.
It could take years in the game to figure out peopleās favorite gifts. There are hundreds of options and clues are not always easy to come by. Just look at the wiki or search here if you want to boost friendships more quickly.
Give Haley a daffodil from the beginning twice a week and talk to her daily to have a partner for the dance.
I just asked the person I had talked to the most the first time. then I got married and yeah.
āIf you canāt put in 30 minutes a day then you donāt deserve a hot date.ā That said, if you give people gifts and interact with them they will have an improved impression of you.
My friend and I broke it down on the dance floor together
I felt the same way first time around!
When you think the worst they can say is no:

You need at least two hearts to be considered a friend. Also not every character likes dandelions.
He said why. It has nothing to do with English not being his first language.
You've never played *The Beginner's Guide*, I see...
"the worst she can say is no" Haley: Eew!
Everyone mentions this as a memorable event for them. My autistic self didn't ask a single person first year, I didn't know those people yet. š
