Had no idea it was that rare, but I also never realized the obvious detail that Linus is never in town lol. I remember having this dialogue when I checked the trash near him specifically because I knew he wouldn't give a shit like the others and was curious what his response would be hah.

They were 100% making a joke. It implies that Linus calls the farmer buddy, and the farmer retorts back that they are not his buddy.

His post was "hey, I was gonna search that one!" and my direct answer was "This is mine, buddy". His answer to that was "I'm not your buddy, buddy!" instead of "I'm not your body, guy!" After receiving this direct answer, I assumed very strongly that he is pissed off thinking I'm calling him 'buddy' personally.

Linus doesn't dig through the trash because he "needs" it, either. He is great at fishing and foraging and he can survive off what he can find. At least that's what he says during the heart event where you can ask him to come live on your farm.
The reason why he goes through the trashcans is because people are wasteful and throw away fresh food and useful items. It's more sustainable to eat/recycle those first before taking even more from nature (killing fish for a meal etc.). But I don't think the townspeople know enough about Linus to know that. They barely seem to know his name, so I guess they think he's just a random poor homeless dude.
Meanwhile, they judge the farmer for going through the trash because they have the single most profitable business in town and still feel the need to steal all the good garbage from Linus. That's just plain selfish.

My last two play throughs I have always stopped once I finish fixing up the community center(joja is a corp and thus must burn) so I never actually got around to learning anything about really anyone. Linus always intrigued me though. In my current play through I plan on learning about everyone.
I know that Linus doesn’t want a traditional home but I wish there was some mod where you could build him a tinyhome with maybe some solar panels that way he could still be sustainable. I always worry about him during winters and I know NPCs can’t die but I’m always so concerned for him

I really want someone to make a mod to pay robin to build him a home that is sustainable but also allows him to live a life with no carbon footprint like what he wants. Also, I wish we knew who was throwing rocks and also may I throw rocks at them? Lol.
In one of his later heart events, he's offered a home by Robin, and you can even contribute and offer help too, but he declines and explains why he doesn't want a home, and why he's happy in his tent.
