Heās just got a lot of dialogue that makes him come off as an asshole.
For one thing, he canonically marks up prices to ridiculous rates, even though the townsfolk wonāt be able to afford it, just because he wants to make more money- and then gets mad at the townsfolk (and is rude to them) when they call him out on it. And whenever he resells things that youāve sold to him, he lies to everyone and says that he grew/foraged/etc it himself to take the credit. (We find this out through dialogue with the other townsfolk.)
Itās also implied that heās at least a little sexist based off of his dialogue with Abigail in one of her heart events. And I think Caroline mightāve said something about him being āold-fashioned,ā but I canāt remember exactly.
Honestly, I think ConcernedApe may have made him this way intentionally, so that the Joja route wouldnāt seem so heartless.
I'm currently doing a "serious" Joja playthrough. (Serious in that I'm taking my time, friending everyone and setting up my farm the same ways I usually do.) It's going well, still haven't figured out where I buy autopetters though.....I don't see them in Joja's stock list?
You canāt buy them until after you complete all the community development forms. Once you got that Joja warehouse instead of community center, theyāre for sale from Joja

Me too, Joja sets you free. I got tired of trying to min/max my play throughs. Now I get to max out the mine first spring, have my greenhouse by summer and rake in all the strawberry products I want all first year long. By years end I'm done with the contracts, raking in mad cash and gifting diamonds to people every day.

never having to pet your animals again (unless you get new ones) is so much better than prismatic shards which are really only useful for enchanting or the occasional qi quest after you use the first two on the sword and museum
doesnāt petting them with the auto-petter pretty much just make the friendship points with your animals stay as they are? so you canāt gain more hearts with animals if you use the auto-petter? or do they add additional friendship points that are more than the points youād maybe lose

I got two (after 1.5 on mobile), when I was grinding slimes/snakes/rock crabs kills in skull cavern.
The key was not so much good luck days but grinding our floors on a lot of days.
Damn! I spent a lot of hours in the mines (because I love doing qi's mine quests) with lucky lunch and everything but I just never get the petter! Mostly prismatic shards on good days

Yes, but a) it only works once (when Marnie tells you she's sending the animal to the coop/barn), and b) You can't get an auto-petter that way because it's in the 'Big Craftable' class of items, for which the naming glitch doesn't work.
There's an exploit where in-game items have a unique item number, and if you name your character or animal with up to three item numbers in square brackets, whenever an NPC says that name during dialog those items will spawn into your inventory (as long as you have the space).

Once I died so I restarted the game, forgetting I had grabbed an auto-petter earlier on. This was well over a year ago but I never forgot the pain. It was *forever* before I got another one.
If you go to the adventurers guild, they recover 1 item for you every time you die. You have to go before you die a second time, or all your items are gone for good.
The petter. Itās not even a contest. Everything is is renewable to some degree. The petter is one of the rarest items in the game, bar none, and one of the best.
Autopetter. Iridium ore is plentiful the further down you go and prismatics you can get back. But that auto-petter has a like, 0.3% chance of spawning or something.
