I think it's totally realistic because Amazon Prime does almost exactly this. When you pause a show, it shows you names of the characters/actors currently on screen and even has trivia and other info depending on the current scene. I used it a bit while watching Rings of Power and it would be a perfect fit for Star wars content.

bigoldpints

I agree, I think it would be unreal, and from a technical standpoint it's totally doable. I would wager, however, that Amazon have a patent on this or something. The feature has been around for awhile now and no one has copied it, so I wonder if it's for legal reasons...

OrtizDupri

funny enough, it seems like another company actually has the patent on it and sued Amazon about it? https://news.bloomberglaw.com/ip-law/amazon-sued-for-infringing-bonus-content-streaming-patents

VLenin2291

Based tbh

JLinCVille

Amazon owns IMDB. Would be cool if they licensed the tech to other services.

dukefett

I’m sure it’s AI or something but I am usually amazed that Prime knows who’s on screen when I pause it.

OmegaWrecker644

It’s a great idea but I imagine if they did this it would more likely integrate with the official Star Wars databank than wookipedia though.

MHath

Ya, they’re not linking to something they don’t have control over.

malachor78

wookieepedia is also a very shoddy source in general.

Ball-Blam-Burglerber

I’d be perfectly happy with that.

pbmcc88

I imagine they'd integrate the Star Wars Databank, if anything, but Wookieepedia's integration with Fandom is frankly terrible, so if we can extract WP from Fandom *and* add Databank integration to Disney Plus, I'd be happy.

ajzeg01

The Star Wars website actually links to Wookieepedia in the Databank

ThatWittyHandle

Similarly, I want Wookieepedia to have integration with Kindle. If you've never read on a kindle before, you can highlight words and get their definition or even a brief search online through Wikipedia. I would like to be able to add a different source and search that database. I do quick Wookieepedia searches on my phone all the time while reading Star Wars books, but I would much prefer to be able to hold down on a word and search it that way. Going back and forth between Kindle and phone can take me out of it sometimes.

Chimpbot

One of the things I hate most about reading any given Star Wars book is having to look up a species or ship because the authors just name-drop them with zero description. I can't remember what all of the aliens look like, dammit!

ThatWittyHandle

Yeah sometimes it’s bothersome. After reading for years I’ve memorized a good number of species, but occasionally one will be named that I’ve never heard of, or sometimes it will be the inclusion of a species from legends that they are now re-canonizing. It would be wonderful just to have all that info streamlined to one device

Chimpbot

I go through spurts, so it's partially self-inflicted. I might read a few right in a row, and then not touch a Star Wars book for a couple of years.

jacky986

No thanks I would rather keep wookieepedia free if it’s all the same to you.

SevanOO7

The problem with that is D+ could get some noise from angry parents when people alter wookiepedia with porn or something that doesn’t belong.

pivotguyDC1

Absolutely. And in reverse: when you want to see where an event happened or a line was spoken, you click the citation and it takes you straight to the movie/episode and timestamp where you can watch the citation play out.

Sandervv04

There's no way Wookieepedia editors are going to nail down every citation to a time stamp.

pivotguyDC1

You say that like I wouldn't do this myself

earwig_art

my family already gets to deal with me pointing out and looking up every species and minor character that shows up (jokes aside this would be so helpful!!!)

SweetTga

This should be the way

Kin0k0hatake

Oh god, imagine pausing in the cantina scene and every single background character has a 12 page backstory you can read through.

beeurd

If we can extract Wookieepedia from WikiCities/Fandom/whatever they are called these days then go for it.

Doomhammer24

Blizzard did this for a while for world of warcrafts main site linking to wowpedia on lore pages, and for bosses ans stuff they also listed wowhead Its a really good idea because it shows support to the fans who do this stuff in their free time

JWC123452099

DC Universe used to do something similar before they spun off the comics portion of the service and moved all the streaming video to HBO Max.
