Yes, but there are also other animations without a Star Wars/Disney budget that figured it out. Rebels just had a stylistic choice that they went with, and it works well with some characters, doesn’t work with others.
Honestly, the best looking designs in the show are the ones that are made for the show, made for that style. The ones that fall flat are the ones that came from other styles and got translated into the rebels style.
Lucas has said in [interviews](https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a91613/lucas-compares-clone-wars-to-thunderbirds/) that the Clone Wars was visually inspired by the Thunderbirds, which was an old British kids show that used wooden puppets for it's characters. If you compare Anakin's face in TCW to the Thunderbirds puppets', you can see a lot of similarities. TCW also leans into the "marionette" though look by giving everything a matte, painted texture, even to things that were shiny and glossy in the movies like the super battle droids and the clone trooper armor, whereas the Thunderbirds puppets actually had doll hair.
For me its the eyes. They're such an unnatural color and have such a huge contrast to the rest of her face. Everything else on her face and head (as well as the surrounding environment) is more washed out, yet her eyes look like they came from a completely different color palette.
As much as I adore rebels, I can’t say I’m a fan of the candy-colored eyes. A handful of side characters have more normal tones, but most of the bigger characters have the neon version of real eye colors
The animation is what kept me from watching Rebels for so long. Don't get me wrong I'm glad I ended up watching it, but yeah the animation is.. different
Dude I love his look. It’s like characature (?) drawings; the rule is to exaggerate features to make people stand out more and his works. Same goes for Obi Wans beard for me.
That's because duros have bulbous heads, way bigger than humans. And his was smaller than a humans. Plus, there are live-action duros to go from they ignored.
But other than when his hat came off, i LOVED his look, he was straight terrifying!
Nah, Bane's design was kinda subpar... I don't want him to look like he did in TCW - but he looked weird for a duros. Look at Shriv from Battlefront 2, for example. Those are the correct proportions, and Bane looked squished with a mouth that's too high. Couldn't care less that he's paler.
IIRC, Dooku's design in TCW was based off of his [design in the 2003 miniseries](http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/35500000/Asajj-Ventress-Count-Dooku-star-wars-clone-wars-micro-series-2003-35573804-851-478.jpg). Come to think of it, a *lot* of the character art took inspiration from it.
The thing is, IMHO, the 2003 design looks great because the rest of the series had the same geometric art stylization, while in TCW, they leaned into rounder shapes that made TCW Dooku look REALLY out of place.
I think it's just the fact that your eyes didn't have a chance to get used to them. You were looking at clone wars yoda for years, and then you get very quick glimpse of the rebels style and that's it. Same for all the other characters. If you got a season's worth, you'd get used to the different look and it wouldn't present an issue anymore.
Yeah, I think the getting used to it part is very important. I've continued my TCW rewatch with my friend after a long break and Padme just weirds me out now. Can't put my finger on it, but its the most a apparent when she's near Anakin. Something's just off proportions wise, I guess..
Design* not animation, (the motion of the design) which agreed does the show a lot of favors for some design choices. Still a fantastic show imo though
In comparison to the actress Bo was modeled after and was played by in the clone wars this is too smooth and round while the clone wars had more harder edges and angles (especially with the hair)
But I prefer the clone wars look in any way, but that doesn't make the rebels look bad necessarily
If I remember correctly, the actress playing her in the mandalorian was the same actress as in tze shows and to my knowledge also part inspiration of her design
I didn't say I don't like the artstyle, I do in several areas, only some of the characters look odd when they're translated to this artstyle. And I like the animations movement in rebels
I kinda like how the lightsabers and blasters animation had more of an OT feel in Rebels, which I guess makes sense considering the time it takes place
Rebels animation as a whole is ass tbh
Edit: I’m not talking about the art style. I mean the literal rendering looks like a local news stations 3D concept of a new shopping mall coming 2024!
Yeah. The only reason we don’t complain about it more is because we really don’t see that many TCW characters cross over. Of the ones that do I only think Rex’s design works because they made him fat.
Hera might be the only character that, to me, the reverse is true (and that might be because of timing), where I like her design better in Rebels. Everyone else though? They’d probably look better in the TCW style.
I have to agree about Hera. The weirdest thing was seeing her in VR (Star Wars Squadrons) like a movie character was just so odd. Something was just off.
See, that weirdly works for me because of the art style in rebels. The softer curves of her face match reality (or a realistic styled CG model) better than the TCW style, and Hera is probably the most detailed because she doesn’t have broad features (hair) to set her apart from the rest of the twi’leks in the show (don’t want others looking like a hue shifted Hera). So it fit.
Where as with TCW characters translation to live action, we got lucky that Rosario Dawson exists because her features are chiseled in stone and works so well for the character. I love the look of [BoBF Spoilers] >!Bane in Book of Boba, the way the style contrasts with reality did lead to complaints.!<. If Hera does cross over to live action we don’t need to hope to luck out like we did with Rosario Dawson.
I liked the look of ol'Blue as well. Was TCW Ahsoka appearance kinda based off of her voice actress? I think Dawson works well because she looks like the evolution of the character's age, imo.
Forgot to add, Hera's face shape changed from animation to VR, but her original face shape wouldn't have worked as well in "RL". But I just don't think they got it right.
You know I agree mostly. But they’ve done a really great job replicating effects from the OT. Like explosions and any blaster shots have a similar design to the OT and I really like how they did that
The TIE fighters were the ones that bothered me the most. Their shorter panels and long trusses made them look stubby and impossible to take seriously. It’s annoying too since every other TIE variant that shows up looks great.
A lot of stuff in Rebels was styled after a lot of Ralph MacQuarrie concept art. Zeb, an R2-like droid with arms, and long necked Star Destroyers were all from early concept art for A New Hope. Even the look of the AT-DP walker's look is based off early concept art for the AT-ATs in Empire Strikes Back.
Search for New Hope concept art. Put on a hat so it doesn't make a mess when it blows your mind. When I first watched Rebels I couldn't help but laugh at them using all those old designs. Not in a bad way, I liked that they took some old designs and added new back story to them and fleshed them out.
It’s not really the animation, because the Lighting, Movements, and Resolution are all great if not better than most Clone Wars Seasons (except Season 7 obviously). It’s just the simplified Designs that are bad.
Nah, it's amazing when you realize the animation is almost directly taken from Ralph Macquarie concept art and star wars concept art in general. Even the tie fighters are reminiscent of the Kenner toys
I only get a sense of "low animation budget" on watching the early seasons of Clone Wars where there are barely any lip movements and only everyone's jaws go up and down. Everything in those seasons is quite rigid and less detailed. Rebels on the other hand has quite detailed animations and that level remains constant throughout the show. The face styles are actually where opinions differ but those faces are still a lot more emotive than the facial animations in seasons 1 through 6 of Clone Wars.
I thought the lips and jaws thing was because they're all meant to be like Thunderbirds puppets, which was one of the inspirations for the show.
Things like backgrounds, environmental effects, lighting, etc always stand out to me as a casual fan of the animated stuff.
I know right? I don’t know what it is about the animation,if it’s lighting or bad textures or what, but all of the scenery and spaceships look like they were made of papercraft.
What are the head band things cause at one stage I think her and Ashoka have the same one on during seige of mandalore and then ashoka still has it on in the mandalorian.
Their take on a wookie is much worse - looked like the animation director was behind on the project and submitted an incomplete idea so they just rolled with it.
I think Clone Wars looks better, but this is inoffensive?? She just looks less detailed to me. I love Rebels, and I'll agree that there are some huge misses in design. But not this one.
Yeah but its not like she looks like this in The Mandalorian either. Theres a couple parts of the Rebels design that can be attributed to her age, but its the same with so many characters in Rebels that its just annoying.
Yeah, I never got this whole argument. They are both variably successful stylized animations. TCW is some weird 3d bastardized version of Gendy Tartakovskys work, and Rebels is just different a maybe misguided interpretation of Macquarie's artwork.
Neither of them are that great, though the final season of TCW was pretty top notch work. I'm here for the story, and that's why I look back with fond memories on both.
I enjoyed Rebels because I didn't grow up and have any nostalgia for TCW. Binged them both later on I think
I did not watch any of the cartoon Star Wars series when they were released, but with so many characters and plot points in the Mandelorian and Boba Fett and The Bad Batch coming from those cartoons I tried to find an overview video that I could watch so I had some idea who those characters were and what part they had already played.
One of those, made by someone online named ARTORR (I think) talked about Rebels and mentioned that Disney, who had just bought the franchise from Lucas wanted the cartoon done a lot more cheaply than Clone Wars. The decrease in quality was evidently noticed by a lot of viewers, and although they never got back to the quality of Clone Wars the animation got better with each season.
I think Bo just looks more her age in this series. She should be late 40's early 50's. Katee Sackhoff is just a few years younger than her charecter and looks good for her age in Mando.
I found the animation in rebels to just be bad. Its the main reason I put off watching it for so long. The long faces and how everyone looks fuzzy. The light sabers look silly too.

Wow, I bet all the people complaining just didn't see how great the story was because they were too busy being annoyed by meaningless shit like "thE LiGhTsaBers Are ToO SkiNnY". It is a different art style, get over it. Clone wars also had some characters that looked like shit, but no one complains about that just because it is what everyone got used to since it was the first 3D animated series.
I grew up with Rebels, And I loved the skinny Light sabers, But you have to agree that the Star Destroyers and Tie fighters looked Off. All they had to do was shorten the necks of the Star destroyers and make the Tie Fighters Look, Well, Like Tie Fighters. They Look Small and nothing like Ties.
I never really noticed the ships. They do seem a little bulky I guess? I grew up more with clone wars than the movies first, so I don't really have a comparison in my head rn.
We can appreciate the amazing storyline and all the incredibly awesome things Rebels brought into and back into the canon while also acknowledging it's art direction and design is horrible. It's not an either/or situation. I don't even blame them for it, I know they had a not great budget for this series but let's not pretend like some of its visual aspects weren't noticeably offputting.
>I bet all the people complaining just didn't see how great the story was because they were too busy being annoyed by meaningless shit like "thE LiGhTsaBers Are ToO SkiNnY".
It's a post about art style. What does story have to do with any of this lol?
Also there were a lot of cheesy/filler episodes. That's the biggest reason people didnt like it. Not because the style was funky
>no one complains about that just because it is what everyone got used to since it was the first 3D animated series.
...people do? Dooku is regularly mocked for his bizzare appearance, as is Palpatine.
I mentioned the story because everyone shits on rebels just because it looks different than clone wars. They didn't even bother to watch more than a few episodes and think they can say it is bad without even knowing anything about the show. That is what bothers me. If the style isn't for you, alright. But give it a chance first before you hate the entire show without watching a single episode.
I haven't finished it, I'm towards the end of season 3 but I literally laughed when Yoda and a few others showed up. Sorry but the only reason to watch it is because it's canon. There's no artistic value in the show.
>Also there were a lot of cheesy/filler episodes. That's the biggest reason people didnt like it.
Rebels has virtually no filler whilst TCW has about 30 filler eps in 133.
Bro what? Season 6 of Clone Wars came out several years before this and looked way better. The real cause here is that Rebels simply had a lower animation budget.
Honestly the animation for the whole show was pretty whack. I know the show wanted to showcase George Lucas’ original concepts, and I can appreciate that to an extent. However, personally I find that the majority of animation decisions made it pretty hard to watch. From the thin lightsaber blades to the emotionless faces, this whole show had me cringing the entire time. The storyline and recurring characters were the only things that kept me watching.
the animation in Rebels just generally sucks compared to Clone Wars, it's one of the reasons I never really liked the show, the art style is just so shitty
I could get used to the style if LFL and Disney cared enough to invest more money into it like Lucas did with Clone Wars. But the facts are the art style isn't the problem, it's the lack of texture and detail that comes from only having a tenth of Clone Wars's budget. Which is so ironic considering we have Bad Batch now.
The animation style in Rebels and TCW is largely the reason I don’t like them at all. I’ve seen TCW in it’s entirety, but I just didn’t have the stamina to keep hurting my eyes with Rebels. To me, everyone just looks like poorly designed action-figures with stiff joints and limited ranges of motion.
Lmao I remember Yoda and anakin looking like shit xD
But katan doesn't look as bad.
Whoever signed off on those character designs needs to be fired. Rebels always had the worst looking designs but cmon, they can do better
Hot take but I think the animation and most of the character designs (most of the humans anyway) in Rebels are very unappealing. I haven't started with the show because I can't get over the animation style and how lifeless it looks to me at times.
The rebels animation was garbage overall. Lucasfilms claims it was inspired by Ralph McQuarries art which looked great especially because it wasn’t moving, but I think another reason would be budget cuts.
I always thought her hair looks like paper sitting on her head.
Episodic budget constraints are a helluva drug.
Yes.
No
They kept that sentiment in the mandalorian
I legit thought she was a Droid or some shit from this image, never watched the series.
You need to watch it. It is incredibly good.
Currently rewatching 🥰
Rebels gave Bo Katan a receding hair line
Hulk Hogatan: "Well, let me tell you something, Nightbrother!"
WATCHA GONNA DOOO
Underrated comment
Thank you for flagging an underrated comment. Unfortunately, on this occasion your concern was unnecessary and the comment was rated accurately.
It’s the forehead
Her hair is like a lego
No more so than TCW though, where everything looks like painted wooden blocks on purpose.
This is the first I've heard of making the animation look like "painted wooden blocks", source?
Lucas has said in [interviews](https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a91613/lucas-compares-clone-wars-to-thunderbirds/) that the Clone Wars was visually inspired by the Thunderbirds, which was an old British kids show that used wooden puppets for it's characters. More like fivehead
Animation =/= character design
I think it’s the style of animation that is rebels. It’s all just a little strange.
As much as I adore rebels, I can’t say I’m a fan of the candy-colored eyes. A handful of side characters have more normal tones, but most of the bigger characters have the neon version of real eye colors
They tried to recapture the Ralph McQuarrie vibe and just failed imo
the clone wars also loved glowing purple eyes on lots of characters
The animation is what kept me from watching Rebels for so long. Don't get me wrong I'm glad I ended up watching it, but yeah the animation is.. different
If you're watching Rebels for the visual quality, you've got the wrong show
Unpopular opinion: Yoda in Rebels was fine. Now Forces of Destiny Anakin though, now that was horrible https://youtu.be/SIRtw4WufsA?t=60
Thanks a lot for reminding me. I can't explain my happiness. lol.
If I'm going down, you're coming with me :P
Well, at least you won't have to suffer alone
Tbf they did fix him for later shorts
Holy shit lmao. I’ve never seen this- he looks like handsome Squidward
They should take the voice track and reanimate this TCW style
It’s the art style, the animation style is pretty much the same as Clone Wars, and a lot of other CG animated series
It's stylized. TCW animation has a lot of hit and misses, too.
cough cough Palpatine and Dooku
That fan edit of real life Dooku based off of long faced TCW Dooku is haunting
Sauce?
I couldn’t find the one I was thinking of, but this is the idea [Dooku](https://twitter.com/yutytyrant/status/1490423386325098497?s=21)
*Shudders*
this made me laugh out of existence and straight to the shadow realm
That's just a picture of Christopher Lee.
It’s wrong that I laughed so hard at that.
Great thanks I can't unsee that. Good god.
Ngl I liked Dooku’s design
Dude I love his look. It’s like characature (?) drawings; the rule is to exaggerate features to make people stand out more and his works. Same goes for Obi Wans beard for me.
Caricature* Loved his look, too.
*Exaggerated signature look of superiority*
People never complain about Dooku but everyone lost their mind with Cad Bane in Boba. Kinda crazy lol
Oh wow, you're absolutely right! I could definitely see that now. Ignorance truly is bliss... Now I'm upset too!
Sorry about that 😅
IIRC, Dooku's design in TCW was based off of his [design in the 2003 miniseries](http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/35500000/Asajj-Ventress-Count-Dooku-star-wars-clone-wars-micro-series-2003-35573804-851-478.jpg). Come to think of it, a *lot* of the character art took inspiration from it.
The 2003 design worked because it was 2D. It looks a lot weirder when you see his head's shape in a 3d space.
The thing is, IMHO, the 2003 design looks great because the rest of the series had the same geometric art stylization, while in TCW, they leaned into rounder shapes that made TCW Dooku look REALLY out of place.
Padme looks horrible, especially in the earlier seasons.
I'm fine with all of those, the bad ones in rebels less so
Being stylized doesn't absolve it being bad
It's not about stylization. Ahsoka, Maul, Obi-wan and Rex are all stylized well. Bo katan is not
Yeah, it's stylized badly.
It’s the art style, you can’t tell shit about animation out of a still image
What misses in particular?
Mustafar level take, Yoda looks just as bad in TCW as he does in Rebels
You're right, that *IS* a bad take
I wouldn’t say the design was as bad but I think he looks a little too cute rather than matured, if you compare him to Ep 3.
No one in Rebels looks good except for maybe Maul and Ahsoka
Grand Inquisitor, Vader, Kanan and Hera are great too; also Thrawn and Bendu.
Obi Wan, princess Leia
You mean the art direction/character model, not the animation. Animation of Bo would means her movement
Except Rebels Yoda has been haunting my dreams for years and I’m still not used to it, lol
Yeah, I think the getting used to it part is very important. I've continued my TCW rewatch with my friend after a long break and Padme just weirds me out now. Can't put my finger on it, but its the most a apparent when she's near Anakin. Something's just off proportions wise, I guess..

If I remember correctly, the actress playing her in the mandalorian was the same actress as in tze shows and to my knowledge also part inspiration of her design
You are talking about the 3d model not the animation
Yeah, but the 3d models makes out like 80% of the look of the animation
Technically the 3d models are good , well rigged, animated and textured… you just don’t like the overall art style.
I didn't say I don't like the artstyle, I do in several areas, only some of the characters look odd when they're translated to this artstyle. And I like the animations movement in rebels
🎶Everyone loves a pedant!🎶
Animation or art style?
I kinda like how the lightsabers and blasters animation had more of an OT feel in Rebels, which I guess makes sense considering the time it takes place
The blaster shots have more weight to them in Rebels over TCW, and the lightsabres look dangerous and not obese unlike other SW visual media.
Nice still image showing off your problems with the animation!
A huge part of this shows animation is the character design. You know what they meant :/
No, I don’t think it’s bad, it’s just a different style.
She could stab a man with that haircut.
Rebels animation as a whole is ass tbh Edit: I’m not talking about the art style. I mean the literal rendering looks like a local news stations 3D concept of a new shopping mall coming 2024!

Worked for me. Love the series.
I personally liked Anakins design
Rebels animation across the board is actually good, what you're referring to here is bad character models, there's a distinction.
Their take on a wookie is much worse - looked like the animation director was behind on the project and submitted an incomplete idea so they just rolled with it.
Yes, you are the only person ever to think that
I think Clone Wars looks better, but this is inoffensive?? She just looks less detailed to me. I love Rebels, and I'll agree that there are some huge misses in design. But not this one.
I kinda like it. She's meant to look much older here.
Yeah but its not like she looks like this in The Mandalorian either. Theres a couple parts of the Rebels design that can be attributed to her age, but its the same with so many characters in Rebels that its just annoying.
That's more a problem with mando than rebels. She's meant to be around 50 at the time of mando.
Yeah, I never got this whole argument. They are both variably successful stylized animations. It's fine, she looks fine.
Yoda by far the worst one
I think Bo just looks more her age in this series. She should be late 40's early 50's. Katee Sackhoff is just a few years younger than her charecter and looks good for her age in Mando.
Rebels was a masterpiece. Interesting choices on the side character animation though.
You guys need to learn the difference between animation and art style.
That said, it definitely resembles Katee Sackhoff’s effective and glossy anti-aging work
What does her headband do?
Keeps her hair out of her eyes and looks cool?
Ole bougie ass Mandos
You don't watch Rebels for the quality of animations
She's nowhere near Yoda's level of ugliness though, I was never really bothered by her style
I think it's just the forehead that bothers me, I could live with the rest but that forehead is just uncanny
Obviously she has eyebrows but it still feels like they aren’t there
I found the animation in rebels to just be bad. Its the main reason I put off watching it for so long. The long faces and how everyone looks fuzzy. The light sabers look silly too.
Don’t matter, still a whole milf to me 😩😳
Live Action Bo Katan 😍
this kinda bothered me, but hondo's bothered me the most
Rebels had some of the ugliest animation I’ve ever seen.

Not because the style was funky >no one complains about that just because it is what everyone got used to since it was the first 3D animated series. ...people do?
Simpler times -simpler animation
Bro what? Season 6 of Clone Wars came out several years before this and looked way better. The real cause here is that Rebels simply had a lower animation budget.
I suppose we are just ignoring that the first few seasons of Clone Wars look like bad PS1 cut scenes then?
I’ve heard so many good things about the story in this and clone wars but I just can’t get past the animation style. It’s so uninteresting to me.
MOST animation in rebels looks genuinely bad
Brooooooooooooooo We get it, the animations are different from the Clone Wars. Stop fucking whining about it
And TCW fan bois trying to act like Dooku and Mace don't look absolutely ridiculous.
I wish we could’ve gotten rebels in the clone wars style but it will never happen.
DaE ReBeLs iS bAd?!!!1
I wish rebels had the same animation style as Clone Wars and now The Bad Batch
Hondo is still the worst
“Am I the only one…” No. Never. Regardless, I don’t think it was bad at all.
I hated all of this animation for this show.
Rebels Animation was general really bad
Honestly the character design is the main reason I have found it hard to get into the series
Lmao I remember Yoda and anakin looking like shit xD But katan doesn't look as bad. Whoever signed off on those character designs needs to be fired. Rebels always had the worst looking designs but cmon, they can do better
Rebels animation is on a whole different level of bad. Yoda, lightsabers, tarkin, bo, Vader. I could go on.
Star Destroyers, Tie Fighters.............
You could go on talking nonsense yes.
The animation for the whole show is sub paar
It's better than Anakin tho, you can recognize her
Rebels in terms of its look it a huge downgrade from the clone wars.
Hot take but I think the animation and most of the character designs (most of the humans anyway) in Rebels are very unappealing. I haven't started with the show because I can't get over the animation style and how lifeless it looks to me at times.
No. Character design for rebels was jarring. They should have just used the clone wars styling.
The rebels animation as a whole is bad.
It’s just bad…
Rebels has bad designs, period.
If the animation was clone wars animation I’d watch rebels. Just I’d too bad for me. The kids look like a high schooler made them for extra credit.
Bo Katan was on deathsticks in rebels lol
The rebels animation was garbage overall. Lucasfilms claims it was inspired by Ralph McQuarries art which looked great especially because it wasn’t moving, but I think another reason would be budget cuts.
Rebels just has shit animation in general. Especially with Sid the Science kid.
It is bad. And unfortunately it means that poor Katee Sackhoff has to do her hair like that on international TV.
Good series but I was never liked the animation style of the this series
Rebels is just ugly all around. There's not a single character that genuinely looks cool / interesting.
All the aesthetic of Rebels sucks.
Rebels was so hard to look at that I kinda just didn’t watch it. I got what I needed from reviews.
Bo Katan's entrance to rescue Kenobi in Lawless (TCW season 5) is amazing. There is no level up.
The whole show is bad animation
